JHYE RICHARDSON ON REHAB, ROHIT AND RITUALS
You have had a recent shoulder injury from a fielding mishap in Dubai. What’s the rehabilitation been like and how is it coming along? Shoulder is coming along really well now. I think the public misconception throughout the whole injury has been that my shoulder is going to still cause me problems and be a major issue moving forward. Throughout the world cup, and moving forward to the ashes, my shoulder has been progressing really well and we are yet to take a major step back. I think the fact that we were working against such tight time-frames made it seem a lot worse than it was.
...BASTMEN SIMILAR TO THIS CAN JUST FLICK A SWITCH AND BECOME REALLY UNPREDICTABLE. THEY’RE THE ONES YOU HAVE TO BE REALLY CAREFUL OF.
I am running in relaxed, balanced and trying to flow through the crease as best I can. I get asked this question a lot and it has a lot to do with being explosive and having fast twitch muscle fibres as well as a locked front leg at the crease.
KISS stands for Keep it simple stupid. Cricket is such a mental game, and your thoughts and emotions can often get the better of you. This leads you to try way too many things and usually bowl well below of what you are capable of. It allows me to remember that simplicity is key.
Your fastest recorded bowling speed? My fastest ball has been in the Big Bash League clocked at 149kph.
Your frame probably isn’t built in the traditional mould of most fast bowlers. Where does your speed come from?
We’ve noticed writing on some the toes of some of your adidas cricket shoes. What do write on them and what’s the story behind this?
It all comes from rhythm for me. Often I try and run in as fast as I can, or push through the crease as hard as I can and the reality is that the ball comes out at the same speed compared to when
I’ve written ‘stand tall’ or KISS on my shoes before. Stand tall is just a simple cue for me to remember be tall through the crease, and not feeling like I’m trying to bowl too fast.
Which batsman do you find the most challenging to bowl to and why? I often find batsmen similar to Rohit Sharma difficult to bowl to because it could be the first over of the game and he will block you and see you off until the next over, and you feel like the next over you’re still in the game and then all of a sudden you’ve gone for 15. It’s like batsmen similar to this can just flick a switch and become really unpredictable. They’re the ones you have to be really careful of.

10
You have had a fairly metaphoric rise within cricket the past year. What’s your favourite experience to date? My favourite experience has definitely been my Test debut. It was a pure sense of excitement, fear and pride all at the same time. A very close second to this would definitely be beating India, in India. That doesn’t happen very often and to be a part of the team to do that was really special. I’ve been to India a few times and I don’t think I’ve ever heard a cricket stadium so silent after the last ball was bowled. Favourite country to tour? Favourite country definitely would have to be South Africa or England. So far you seem to have had the better of your battles with Virat Kohli. How do you go about bowling to the world’s #1 batsman and is there anything in particular that you attribute to your success against him? Virat Kohli is an unbelievable batsman, I think I was just lucky to be bowling at those particular times in the game to get him out. Obviously we have plans to get him out but they don’t always work. I thrived off the challenge. I knew it was always going to be a tough ask to bowl someone like him, but it got me fired up and I reckon he got fired up and wanted to get into the contest as well.
QUICK FIRE QUESTIONS:
Favourite sport outside of cricket? AFL.
Favourite pre game snack? Usually a toastie from the WACA salad bar!
What do you do to relax? Video games. Your best match figures? 8/47.
How do you like to spend your time away from cricket when you are on a break? I love music and video games. I find it relaxing to lose a couple of hours in trying to finish or beat a game, whilst still having that competitive edge when versing mates online.
Best pump up song? Anything that is super loud! If you weren’t playing cricket, what would you be doing? Probably something that is outdoors. Do you have any pets? My golden retriever, Nala.
Most exciting game you have played in? Winning in the last over batting with Pat Cummins verses India in a T20. Poster on your wall as a kid was? The test team of the Century. Person you most want to bowl out? AB Devilliers.
Coffee or tea? Coffee.

I HAD A BALL HIT BACK AT ME WHICH HIT ME IN THE ANKLE AND BROKE MY LEG. I STRUGGLED NOT BEING ALLOWED TO DO ANYTHING.
SEAN ABBOTT Talented with both ball and bat, Sean Abbot has seen his fair share cricketing ups and downs. Down to earth and hard working, Sean is a man who has taken on some of the best players in the world. We are lucky enough to get some time to talk about his thoughts on his cricket, IPL, injuries and what he loves.
Did you play other sports growing up and at what age did you make a decision to go with cricket as a career? I played rugby league growing up. My uncle played for the Parramatta Eels and my Grandfather has been involved with the club for about 30 years. I played a handful of underage rep games for the Eels but quit when I was 16. What’s been the best memory to date in cricket for you?
There’s been many great memories so far. I’d say probably making my ODI and T20 debuts for Australia against Pakistan in Dubai and Abu Dhabi a few years ago. What’s your fastest recorded bowling speed? Unsure actually. Don’t watch my games back much but I’ve looked up and seen 144 km/h a couple times. Would love to see that more often!
What’s the most serious injury that you have had and how hard was it to come back from? I had a ball hit back at me which hit me in the ankle and broke my leg. I struggled not being allowed to do anything or walk around for a few months. Once I came back it took quite a while for my body to trust my ankle and my leg to be able to put the force required through it to be able to bowl at 100%.

I FOUND IPL QUITE DIFFERENT TO BBL MAINLY BECAUSE OF THE ACCESS TO SO MANY INTERNATIONAL PLAYERS. THE CROWDS THERE ARE RIDICULOUS!
14
You have spent some time in the IPL in India. How did you find that experience and is it very different to our BBL?
When touring, we understand that you sometimes have to share rooms. Who is your favourite roommate to tour with?
QUICK FIRE QUESTIONS:
Absolutely loved it. I got picked up for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. They’ve obviously had Virat Kohli, AB De Villiers and Chris Gayle for a number of years and it was awesome being able to train and play with those guys. Was lucky enough to have good mates Nic Maddinson and Mitch Starc at the franchise also. Also had close friend Trent Woodhill as assistant coach and loved working with Dan Vettori who was head coach. I found IPL quite different to BBL mainly because of the access to so many international players. The crowds there are also ridiculous. Couldn’t fit any more people into any of the games at any ground!
I’d have to say Harry Conway. Never too far away from being in stitches with his theatrics and carry on.
Best pump up pre-game song? Anything by Ocean Alley. I prefer the chill vibe pre-game.
How do you like to spend your time away from cricket when you are on a break?
If you weren’t playing cricket, what would you be doing? Absolutely no idea! Dog whisperer?
I play A LOT of golf! But also enjoy spending time by the ocean with my dog Bear. Don’t mind getting out to the farm once a year and clearing the head noise with a few hours on my dirt bike.
Do you have any pets? My Australian Kelpie, Bear.
Which batsman do you find the most challenging to bowl to and why?
The best thing would have to be the lifestyle. To get travel the country and the world playing cricket. Plenty of downtime to enjoy the places we visit or just spending time with friends. The worst thing would have to be spending extended time away from family and friends. I get home sick easily.
Steve Smith. Feel like he’s got so much time and can hit the ball anywhere he wants. Favourite country you have toured?
What is the best thing and least favourite thing about playing cricket for a living?
Favourite pre-game snack? Protein Shake.
Coffee or tea? Coffee. Favourite sport/team outside of cricket? Parramatta Eels. What do you do to relax? Golf or spend time with Bear. Your best match figures? 7 For. Most exciting game you have played in? My ODI and T20 debuts for Australia. Poster on your wall as a kid was? Parramatta Eels team photo.
Definitely the UK! Person you most want to bowl out? Love bowling to David Warner and Steve Smith when they are at Blues training. Incredible batsmen.

SUMMIT EVO Ignite Soccer Ball: If the FFA endorse it, you know it must be good! The SUMMIT EVO Ignite soccer ball is one of the top balls within the range and boy does it perform. Not only does this ball look fantastic with the bright but elegant and modern graphics, but it is highly reliable, for not just training but also as a match quality ball! arena Cobra Ultra Swipe Goggles: After sprinting your way down the pool, coming in to the wall hard, you stick your head out of the water as fast as possible to get a glimpse of the pace clock with your time and would you believe it, you can’t see the damn thing- your goggles have fogged up during the mere 50m you just sprinted, AGAIN! A frustration (to say the very least) EVERY swimmer has, I can guarantee you. However, arena might have just come to our rescue. Having claimed to have created the ultimate game changer, The Cobra Ultra Swipe Anti Fog Goggles! arena have recently released a range of ‘Anti Fog Goggles’, claiming to extend anti fog protection up to ten times longer than regular goggles (can this be real life?). After numerous training sessions using these bad boys, we can confirm that they do, in fact, live up to their name. Not once have I missed a time due to foggy goggles, even after reactivating. Which in itself is quick and easy to do in the middle of a session, simply swipe the inside of the lens whilst underwater a few times to and you’re good to go, easy as that.
OOFOS OOriginal Thongs: The first thing you notice when sliding in to the OO is 1) the general softness 2) the arch support and 3) how lightweight they are, creating the ultimate trio post run. OOFOS claim to provide unparalleled impact absorption, comfort and support while reducing fatigue and recovery. It does take a few wears to get used to the feel, however, once you do, they are pure bliss. OOFOS provide the opportunity for everyone to wear a pair of thongs with the ergonomic footbed; A design which allows for people who can’t normally wear thongs (due to foot issues or needing orthotics) to be able to wear a cool and comfortable slide in summer!
Not only are these goggles tried and true to their name, but come with a long list of benefits (I could go on, but I’ll be brief). For the price $100AUD, which I know is hefty but the list of pros definitely outweigh the cons. The Cobra Ultra Swipe Goggles are super low profile, eliminating the number one enemy in the water... drag. This in itself is a massive plus, the field of vision you get with these goggles is next level, left, right, up, down- you name it, you can see it. Meaning you can keep a good eye on your competition within your peripheries, a major plus (I’m not competitive at all). These goggles really are catering for everyone, they come in both indoor and outdoor styles, with different levels of tint and mirroring, as well as being fully adjustable, fitting both juniors and adults as one size fits all. arena have thought of everything; The Cobra Ultra Anti Fog Goggles are what (swimmers) dreams are made of. Needless to say, I won’t be going back to my old goggles any time soon.

EADY TO RUN PAT CARROLL TAKES US THROUGH A THREE PART SERIES ON HOW TO GET MARATHON READY. HERE IS PART ONE, ON RUN READINESS.
SETTING THE PACE Pat Carroll is a legend in Australian running. Taking on the best over the few decades, Pat has forgotten more than most people know about running. We are lucky enough to have Pat share some of his knowledge for anyone looking to prepare for a marathon. Like anything you can’t just turn up and hope to do well and in the case of marathons, finish. Running for 42.2kms is never easy, but the following words are designed to make your run easier and faster. Ten Weeks Out If you’re participating for the first time or the 41st time in any Marathon, being aware of what is a realistic pace for yourself and working towards this is the best way to maximise your chances of success.
18
BY STICKING WITH A PACE RUNNER YOU CAN BENEFIT FROM WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT, WHICH AT THE RIGHT TIME CAN HELP SPUR YOU ON WHEN YOU NEED IT MOST Do the maths. The best way to set a pace is to run shorter distances and apply a formula to calculate your pace. Park Run 5k’s are a great opportunity to help estimate your 10km pace by doubling your time and adding 2-3minutes to work towards a half marathon. The same formula can also be applied to predict your Marathon pace from a half marathon training run. A healthy training regime is the key to achieving your pace goal; predicting your Marathon time won’t be as accurate if you haven’t run 21km in training. Slow and steady wins the race. This old adage rings true for runners and the best way to achieve a challenging - yet realistic - goal is to run at an even pace throughout the race. Wearing a GPS running watch will allow you to track your pace in kilometer splits. By tracking your run speed at beginning, middle and end segments, you can try to keep your pace as steady as possible so you won’t fade during the closing stages of the race. Tracking is also useful for race day when nerves, adrenaline and other runners can alter your perceptions of pace.
Buddy up. Running with a friend during training keeps you both accountable and, should you both have a similar goal time for the event, then you can help each other maintain the goal pace on race day. Some marathons provide pace runners for the most popular finishing times for every 10 – 15 minutes. You can rest easy knowing that by following them, you’ll be tracking towards your pace goal. By sticking with a pace runner you can benefit from words of encouragement, which at the right time can help spur you on when you need it most, especially over the testing closing stages. Practice these race day strategies during your training for the next 10 weeks. We will also be delivering parts two and three in coming SG Magazine editions. Pat Carroll has helped hundreds of runners achieve their goals and heads up the Pat Carroll Online and Onland Pacers group. You can also find more at his website: patcarroll.com.au

SOCCER DE
BRAZIL
One of Australia’s best futsal teams has to be Soccer De Brazil. The boys are going from strength to strength and should be on everyones watch list! Last year the SDB boys qualified for the World Football Championships after giving an impressive performance at Craig Foster International. Given the opportunity to compete in the United States, the boys packed their bags and jetted off to the big smoke, where they competed on the world stage with the best of the best. After battling it out on the court Soccer De Brazil were crowned the Copper Division Champions, bringing home the gold medal for Australia! The way the boys train is a unique Brazilian style; with flair, skills and most importantly smiles, boosting the players passion for the game and also their performance. The hard work at training has certainly paid off for the Soccer De Brazil teams and coaches, a job well done! A massive congratulations on their great achievement!

BAULKHAM
HILLS
Earlier in the year, Baulkham Hills Baseball sent their U15 team to the US to compete at the Firecracker Classic Tournament in Los Angeles to play against some of America’s strongest competition! The team not only experienced fantastic match play but also got to see some of Americas best- visiting Hunting Beach Pier and attending a Dodgers game just to name a few. This was a trip the team won’t forget!!
RUSH RUGBY 7S You might not know of Rush Rugby Sevens at the moment but give it a few months and you’ll know exactly who they are, trust us! The team at Rush is equipped with some of the best coaches in the business and it definitely pays off! Having competed at the Uprising Youth 7s on the Fijian Coral Coast earlier in the year, the team is on the locals radar as being one of the best. Putting up a good fight in the first tournament, the team has been invited back on numerous occasions, playing hard and achieving great results. Rush Rugby Sevens have big plans in their sight, this is not a name you want to forget, nor will you after seeing how bright their uniforms are!
BLADES TOUCH TEAM Blades Touch Team has burst on to the scene making quite the impression, not just with their wicked skills on the field but with their bright and bold new jerseys. With the brightest pink in the league- we’re not sure if this was a tactical choice for blinding the opponent or in the name of #fashun. What ever the reason, the team are looking fantastic both on and off the field!
