For more than 92 years, Summit School has been dedicated to realizing our founder Louise Futrell's vision of “a dream school where everybody could be a somebody." Your support is vital to our culture of philanthropy, where parents, grandparents, alums, faculty and staff, former parents, friends, and community members unite to help all students develop their full potential. Your generosity sustains both the immediate and enduring programs that inspire our students to embrace curiosity with confidence that is built on a foundation of competence. Summit students refine the skills, acquire the knowledge, and achieve the understandings they need to shape their futures.
Your commitment to Summit is a profound expression of philanthropy–literally “love” for the Summit community. Thanks to your dedication, lifelong learning is a reality for every child, every day. We are deeply grateful for your support!
Thank you.
Michael Ebeling, Head of School
Schools like Summit exist because of the enduring stewardship of our community. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I extend my heartfelt gratitude for your support during the 2023-2024 school year.
The Summit School community consistently rises to the occasion, supporting Every Eagle, Every Day, through all of our crucial fundraising efforts. Your generosity paves the way for Summit to build strong educational foundations, fostering endless exploration and curious minds.
As many of you are aware, tuition only covers a portion of the cost of a Summit education. The balance is supplemented through an annual draw from our endowment and contributions to The Summit Fund and other fundraising initiatives. I am genuinely inspired by the Summit community's generosity. This spirit of giving has been a hallmark of Summit for more than nine decades, and our ongoing philanthropic efforts will ensure a sustainable future for our cherished school. Thank you for the many ways you have and continue to support Summit School—today and into the future.

Gifts to Summit School come in many forms— and thanks to the family of the late Anne Kesler Shields ’47, the school recently added 9 new incredible works of art to the permanent art collection currently displayed throughout campus.
In an effort to preserve her mother’s artistic and historical legacy, Carolyn Shields ’80 has been thoughtfully gifting her mother’s works of art to local institutions meaningful to the Shields family, including Salem Academy, Wake Forest University, and Summit School.
Carolyn contacted Summit’s development office last summer expressing her interest in adding to Summit’s existing collection of Shields’ works already on view throughout Summit’s campus.
In addition to gifting works by Shields, the family donated pieces by other artists which enabled Summit to complete its collection of art by The Five Winston-Salem Printmakers—Martha Dunigan, Virginia Ingram, Sue Moore ’41, Ann Carter Pollard, and Anne Kesler Shields ’47.
Nine pieces were framed and installed on the first floor of the Arts and Technology building. One optical art (op art) piece was framed and hung in the lower school art studio to enhance the experience of students who study this style. In addition, two pieces of op art were framed and installed in the Lower School Library on either side of the portrait of former head of school, Doug Lewis, completed by Shields in 1988.
While a student at Summit, Anne Kesler Shields was quoted in the school newspaper as saying, “I hope to be an artist when I grow up.”
We are grateful to Dr. Howard Shields, Carolyn Shields ’80, John Shields ’87, and Burton Shields ’82 for their generous gift. In addition, we thank Barbour Strickland ’67 for the generous donation of time and talent; Strickland framed and installed the newly acquired pieces.
Patrons FOR TOMORROW
The Patrons for Tomorrow Society is an integral component of Summit School’s philanthropy program established to recognize those who include Summit School in their estate plans. Planned gifts from our Patrons support the school’s long-term strategic planning initiatives, enhanced programs, capital improvements, and help sustain Summit’s financial stability for current students and for generations of students to come.
Elisabeth and Peter Lovett ’85, proud parents of Caroline ’22 and Will ’25, are one of eight families who added Summit School to their philanthropic legacy plans and joined the Patrons for Tomorrow Society during the most recent fiscal year. Their family’s commitment to Summit over many years is evident in their leadership and support.
“We are proud that we are able to support Summit with a planned gift. Safeguarding the future of Summit is important because of everything that the school has given to our family. Knowing that we will play a small role in the future success of the school and its place in our community is rewarding,” said Elisabeth Lovett.
We are grateful for the Lovetts and for more than 100 additional families—alums, parents, grandparents, faculty, and staff, who have prioritized Summit in their estate plans.
The Lovetts stated, “Our hope is that our planned gift will help ensure that Summit is able to provide future students with the stellar educational, experiential, entrepreneurial, and emotional development opportunities that it has given to the generations of students who came before.”
Planned giving can help you realize important tax benefits while making a significant contribution to the school. We welcome you to join the Patrons for Tomorrow Society, ensuring Summit School remains strong for generations to come.

Beyond the Classroom: Enriching Student Experiences Through the Perkinson Family Travel Fund
The Perkinson Family Travel Fund was established in 2000 in memory of Carl J. Perkinson by Mrs. Carl J. Perkinson, Mrs. Gladys Perkinson Hershey '79, Mr. John Perkinson '74, and Mrs. Elizabeth Perkinson Simmons '71. The purpose of this fund is to help students with demonstrated financial need enrich their educational experiences by participating in school-endorsed trips.
When asked about her interest in supporting Summit, Hershey said “Summit had such a positive impact on us that we wanted to
do the same for the school. We all agreed that one of the opportunities at Summit we enjoyed was the school trips—whether a short trip going to see The Children’s Theatre or a long trip like the 9th Grade Washington, DC trip. These additional experiences provided not only something educational but so many happy memories we share with our classmates—such as the Class of 1979 camping trip to the eastern part of the state where Rosalie Horton ’79 was allowed to pull off Mr. Johnson’s toupee by the campfire—a classic memory from that class. We wanted to help students who may not have the means to participate in these fun experiences.”
Simmons said, "My father was able to go to Russia and behind the Iron Curtain in 1970 and our mother traveled to China in the 1980s; both came back with incredible tales of the differences and commonalities that divide and bring us all together. Learning these lessons at an early age is vitally important."
During the 2023-24 school year, Summit funded more than ten requests for school trips granting aid for the 5th grade enrichment week, the 6th grade trip to Asheville, NC, the 7th grade trip to Charleston, SC, the 8th grade trip to Washington, DC, and the 9th grade trips to both the North Carolina Outer Banks and Costa Rica. We thank the Perkinson family and others who help make travel accessible to all students.
Gifts to Summit’s general endowment fund are always welcome; additionally, a gift of $50,000 or more can establish a permanent, named endowment. Please contact the Development Office at 336-724-5811 or development@summitmail.org if you would like more information.

Creating Opportunities: The Moyer Family’s Vision for Financial Aid at Summit
The Katherine V. Rachel Moyer Class of ’00 Endowment Fund was established in 2013 by Charles E. and Carolyn F. Moyer to honor their daughter, Katherine. The fund provides need based financial aid for students whose families might not otherwise be able to afford a Summit education.
When asked about their interest in supporting Summit, the Moyers said “we were fortunate to be living in a community that included Summit School where a Junior Kindergarten was available. Very young children are driven by curiosity as their ‘knowledge cabinets’ are fairly empty at that age, and Summit teachers bring out the best in each child. The important child development components of self esteem, confidence, acceptance, challenge, expression, worth, and more were solidly addressed at Summit through the elementary years resulting in a very strong foundation. Former teacher Ellen Bonnett was a jewel in how she (and others like her) molded children to be the best they could possibly be.
“What was and still is particularly refreshing is Summit’s approach of bringing ‘real world,’ current technology, and problem-solving concepts to the classroom experience, merging practical experience with important classical learning. As parents, we believe that Katy’s experience at Summit was a critical foundation, providing her with all the tools necessary to successfully navigate adult life with strength. We created the fund to provide support for other students.
“As the fund grows and provides increasing support, it is our hope it finds its way to deserving students and families who might be challenged by the cost of a Summit education
in such a way that fewer sacrifices are necessary for others to obtain the Summit educational foundation.”
During the 2023-24 school year, Summit’s financial aid endowment funds provided approximately $60,000 to support the school’s financial aid program. In total, 21% of the student body receives some form of financial aid, and the average award was $13,200.
We thank the Moyer family and others who help make the cost of a Summit education accessible to a broad range of families. Gifts to Summit’s general endowment fund are always welcome; additionally, a gift of $50,000 or more can establish a permanent, named endowment. Please contact the Development Office at 336-724-5811 or development@summitmail.org if you would like more information.

TRIAD ACADEMY NAMED ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND
A named annual scholarship meets the immediate financial needs of an individual student or students. Unlike endowed scholarships, an annual scholarship is awarded only as long as the donor chooses to contribute to the fund.
The following scholarships are helping students attend the Triad division:
The Kelly/Tegeler Family Scholarship
The Terry Family Scholarship
If you would like more information about how to establish an annual scholarship fund or to give to the Triad Academy Financial Aid Endowment, contact Karen Pranikoff, Director of Admissions and Development for the Triad division at 336-722-2777, ext. 1508 or kpranikoff@summitmail.org.

Over the span of five decades, Loma enhanced the lives, inspired the spirits, and enlarged the possibilities of thousands of students. Loma was energy on fire, expressing a contagious and irrepressible enthusiasm grounded in her love of and belief in every child.
