From the Desk of Ambassador Dear Readers, On the happy occasion of the 65th Republic Day of India, let me extend my heartiest greetings and best wishes to everyone. It gives me great pleasure to see the current issue of India Digest which focuses on India’s bilateral cultural and commercial relationship with Cambodia. Both our countries share a long historical link and today our bilateral political and economic relationship is stronger than before. In the last one year, there have been a large numbers of cultural and commercial events that have taken place. We have had visits by many business delegations and many Indian companies have started investing in Cambodia. Our bilateral trade has been increasing rapidly. We successfully held a Food and Dance Festival and there were visits by many Indian cultural troupes to Cambodia. This issue would provide an overview of many of the events of the past one year as well as give you your favorite sections on religion and history. I would also request feedback from our readers as to how we can better design and put more articles into the India Digest.

The Embassy of India with active support of Indian Association Cambodia (IAC) and Indian Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia (ICC) organized Indian Cultural Night in Phnom Penh on December 28, 2013 at Chaktomuk Theatre. A group of nine dancers led by Ms. Nandita Behera performed Odissi Classical Dance, a traditional style of classical dance which originated in the temples of Orissa, an eastern state of India, in which body movements capture the poses etched on ancient temple walls, and Abhinaya or stylized mime, utilizing symbolic hand gestures and facial expressions to convey a story or theme. She combines a fascinating blend of devotional expression, graceful movements, and cap tivating postures right out of Odissi’s legendary heritage. The theme included vibrant rhythmic items of classical dance pieces starting with an invocation to the Lord, followed by a combination of semi classical numbers presenting different emotions and end the performance with Vande Mataram
which is a salutation to Mother India. Ms. Nandita Behera, who is a disciple of Padmabhusan Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra and Guru Gangadhar Pradhan, is an Odissi dance instructor and founder of the Odissi Dance Circle in Cerritos, California. She has been teaching Odissi in California for the past twenty years. She was awarded Sringaramanai by Sur Singar Samsad Bom bay and is also a recipient of the National Scholarship for Dance in India. THE PANDAVAS IN HASTINAPUR As already mentioned, Dhrishtadyumna had secretly followed the Pandavas and his sister. He had also heard the conversation between Kunti and her sons as well as that between Krishna and Kunti. So, he had come to know that his sister had become a bride of the royal house of Hastinapur.
