MERCED COLLEGE SERVING THE MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY
M
anufacturing is a huge part of our region’s economic vitality, and Merced College intends to play a key role in providing workforce training programs to support our manufacturing industries.
Not only does Merced College offer programs for skills needed in the manufacturing industry, the college’s Workplace Learning Resource Center (WpLRC), has actively worked with manufacturing companies to meet their employee skills needs in our region. The WpLRC, located in the college’s Business Resource Center in downtown Merced, provides local employers and citizens of the greater Merced area with customized training, leadership, and workforce development programs. These programs are functional in context to the job and provide skill enhancement that employees can apply immediately to their job after training. The WpLRC has used statewide collaboration, shared resources, and funding to establish reputable and meaningful services to regional clients. Additionally, the WpLRC has developed and maintained strategic partnerships with businesses and industry leaders, and continues to provide training services in a variety of manufacturing workforce needs. In 2011, the WpLRC began to focus specifically on manufacturing industry needs, working with employers to identify skills gaps in their workforce while providing short-term trainings for incumbent workers. Currently, the “Now is the T.I.M.E” project (Training of Incumbent Manufacturing Employees) is being implemented through June 2014 to: • Meet employer demand for a skilled and prepared workforce; • Provide diverse career pathways for incumbent workers; and • Leverage resources to maximize project impact and value in the region. The T.I.M.E. project builds upon Merced College’s highly successful Training and Education to Advanced Manufacturing (T.E.A.M) and Manufacturers Are Keeping Employees (M.A.K.E) projects funded through 2010-2012 Responsive Training Fund grants. Through the grant activities, the Merced County Department of Workforce Investment and Merced College surveyed area employers to gauge their level of interest in receiving manufacturing industry training. The results were very positive with a high interest in welding, electrical, and programmable logic controller training, among others, for their incumbent workers. To date, the WpLRC has served
15 companies in the region and trained over 600 participants in these maintenance mechanic incumbent worker trainings. Continuing into the T.I.M.E. project, the WpLRC is working with employers to identify specific optimal performance requirements for each company and employee group. These requirements are used to develop success strategies or solutions that close the gap between current and desired performance outcomes. Simultaneously, the U.S. Department of Labor awarded the college’s Industrial Technology program with funding through the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) grant to blend technical, scientific and business principles, and prepare versatile individuals for technological management, production supervision, and related leadership positions. Through the TAACCCT grant, Industrial Technology faculty and staff revamped their course offerings in diesel technology, industrial automation (mechatronics), and welding so that students complete their training faster and with better knowledge and preparation to enter the workforce and meet employer expectations of a skilled employee. The skills students learn in these programs are essential to landing highwage, high-demand careers in the manufacturing industry. And thanks to the TAACCCT grant, as well as Community College Chancellor’s Office grants and successful industry partnerships, Merced College Industrial Technology programs are equipped with the most up-to-date technology to keep up with changing trends in the manufacturing industry. Merced College is continuously looking at new ways to serve business and residents. We look forward to strengthening our partnerships with manufacturing employers to provide workforce training needs for entrylevel and incumbent workers. ENCOURAGES STUDENTS TO GET INVOLVED, GET CONNECTED
E
xciting things are happening in the Office of Student Life (OSL) at UC Merced. Focusing on the foundational principles of leadership, service and social justice, OSL supports the academic mission of the university by sponsoring more than 600 dynamic educational, social and skill-development events each year to connect students with the campus, the community and their Bobcat experiences. As a student, if you are looking for ways to get involved, OSL’s nine programmatic areas provide many options. These areas include leadership programs; clubs and organizations; activities and events; civic leadership; student government; women’s programs; fraternity and sorority life; social justice initiatives; and student judicial affairs. During a busy fall semester, thousands of UC Merced students participated in OSL activities. Events included Welcome Week; the ASCEND conference for new and transfer students; the Clubs and Organizations Fair; University Leadership Conference; Campus Activities Board Treats and Beats Carnival; the traditional end-of-fall
StressFest; and the Fire and Ice Winter Formal. But wait, there’s more! The campus’s 170 registered clubs and organizations sponsored through the Office of Student Life are vital to the student experience. As the organizers of hundreds of campus events each year, student clubs encompass a wide variety of interests such as academic/pre-professional; arts; music; dance; community service; faith; fraternities and sororities; cultural issues; and wellness. While students build strong leadership skills and professional networks, they also learn to coordinate events and manage people, budgets and time — tools that will serve them well at UC Merced and beyond. On top of that, they have a great time! In addition to the valuable skills gained through participation, the ideal of giving back through service remains a priority for UC Merced students and the Office of Student Life. Community-service-based programs include the Merced County Project 10%, which features students speaking to middle school students about the benefits of completing high school and attending college; the Lift While You Lead Mentoring Network, which pairs UC Merced student mentors with students in high school for interaction projects and mentoring; community engaged scholarship opportunities; academic classes with defined community-service components; and coordination of the UC Merced Food Pantry, a supplemental food assistance program serving more than 300 students, staff members and community members monthly. Whether involved in these service opportunities or the dozens of others offered throughout the year, UC
Merced students volunteer hundreds of hours in the local community, showing their commitment to service. Getting involved as a student leads to success in the classroom, the boardroom and beyond. To help students capture their student involvement experiences, OSL introduced the CatLife (catlife. ucmerced.edu) student involvement database last fall. CatLife allows students to search for existing registered clubs and organizations, track community service hours, register new clubs, submit event requests, view upcoming event announcements, vote in campus elections, access and manage the Student Involvement Portfolio, track curriculums, register for events, manage club funds and communicate with group members. Spring 2014 will bring many more exciting opportunities as OSL kicks off the year with January Jumpstart events: the MLK day of Service; fraternity and sorority recruitment; The Bobcat Leadership Series and P.A.W.S. (Passion Action Wellness Service) Seminar; the Black History Month Oratorical Contest and more. With graduation just around the corner and post-grad plans already being made, the Senioritis epidemic is upon us with full force. After a long four years (or more) the temptation to ease up on the gas can sometimes be too difficult to ignore. So whether you’re on the brink of graduation, or just ready for the summer, here are some tips for staving off Senioritis.

Finding time to work out can be a challenge, but making fitness a priority is worth the sacrifice. The therapeutic benefits of a good run or hard gym session are immeasurable and can help release some of the anxiety and stress that come with a busy schedule and hard classes. According to the Mayo Clinic, regular physical activity will not only help you sleep better, but will actually give you more energy throughout the day. That energy could help you be more alert during class or power you through a study or homework session. In fact, research from Purdue University found that “Students who worked out at Purdue’s gym at least once a week were more likely to earn a higher grade point average than students who visited less or not at all.” So be sure to get that cardio in, it just might help you ace that exam.

While classes and exams can be time consuming, getting a job or internship while in school has a number of benefits. An internship in your field of study is a great way to apply classroom concepts in a real work environment and the experience will help prepare you for the work force after graduation. If an internship isn’t an option, look for job openings at your school’s website. On campus positions generally have flexible hours so you will be able to work around your class. While an on campus job might not directly relate to your field of study, it will not only provide a source of extra income, but also will help you gain practical work skills and prepare you to handle work related responsibilities.
Work
Get involved in clubs and organizations within your major. Being around like-minded people who have some of the same goals you have will help you stay the senior year course. Adding consistency and routine to your schedule by going to weekly meetings will also help you stay focused on academics and not on distractions. AddiProfessional tionally, professional clubs can also help build your resume by creating opportunities for you to network with other students as well as professionals in your field. These opportunities and connections could become invaluable to you after graduation, so be sure to take advantage of them.

Fighting Senioritis is hard. Students put in a lot of work and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, burned out, or just lazy. It is important to remember that as seniors you have worked your entire college career to get to graduation, and graduation is almost here — almost. START-UP CULTURE ON CAMPUS

Starting a business is a goal many students have, but you don’t have to wait years after graduation to put your plan into action. Successful corporations such as Google, Facebook and Microsoft were all started by college students and recent graduates. Here are some new and exciting start-ups with ties to a campus near you.
Tin-Bin: Tin-Bin is a promising new software startup from UC Merced. The venture originated as the side project of UCM graduate Tyler Shaddix whose “Simple API for Google Analytics” called OOcharts has generated an enormous user base, including companies such as JP Morgan Chase and Forever 21 . The popularity of OOcharts, an application designed to let users organize their Google analytics, led Shaddix and his partners Jorge Marquez and Jared Calinisan to found Tin-Bin, a company based around the OOcharts product. OOcharts is just the first step though, according to Product Manager Jorge Marquez. Tin-Bin plans on publishing a portfolio of applications in the near future including a legal billing application that is already under construction. To that end, their personnel count has expanded from three to six, and as Marquez, Shaddix and the rest of the team realized, they needed additional man power to continue the business’ growth as they look to expand operations throughout Northern California and the Central Valley. Tin-Bin’s success is due in part to their “new age” business approach where the team works when they can from wherever they are. It’s an unorthodox model, but for a business that started in a living room, that flexibility has produced an impressive result. ////SEE PAGE20

Bounce: Andrew Thompson founded Bounce to solve a problem. A senior at the time attending UC Merced, Thompson realized how hard it was for students to get around the city, especially if they didn’t have a car. This led to the creation of Bounce, a ridesharing service that allowed students to connect with other student drivers. Users in need of local transportation bought tokens from the Bounce website and could redeem those credits in exchange for a ride to a given destination. Where Tin-Bin’s business strategy was laid-back and relaxed, Bounce took a more traditional approach. Thompson and his team created an 11-page business plan, and sought mentorship from UCM Professors S.A. Davis and Mark Harris. Despite all the planning and preparation done to ensure a smooth launch, new ridesharing laws have forced Bounce to change its business model. The service will now transition to a free forum based website where students can post ride wanted ads. Users will conduct their own transactions and Bounce will no longer charge a fee or provide drivers directly thereby reliving them of liabilities and other legal hurdles that made their old structure no longer viable. Bounce’s refreshed service will be operational in the coming months, but the company’s commitment to student service already makes it a success.

People don’t usually associate finances with fun, but CSU Stanislaus graduate Jason Gordo wants to change that. Gordo and business partner Jeff Burrow and the founders of FlexScore, a social software platform designed a program to make managing your money as painless as possible. “We wanted to make it for the average normal person across the country,” said Gordo while describing FlexScore at the Finovate finance technology conference. After creating a FlexScore account, users fill out basic financial information, and FlexScore generates a score between 1- 1,000, the higher your score the better. Your score is meant to serve as a starting point and allows people to not only understand their financial situation, but what steps they can take to improve it. People can also see how their score ranks compared to others of similar age and location as well as income bracket. The system lets users “compete” for the highest score and social tools such as peer ranking and a point system based on individual milestones or “action steps.” This keeps everyone motivated to achieve financial success. FlexScore is still in beta, but if you’re interested in an easier way to keep tabs on your finances you can create a FlexScore account right now for free. FROM BOARDROOM TO THE CLASSROOM Jonae Pistoresi, founder of Merced College’s nationally awarded Customer Service Academy
Jonae Pistoresi is a doer. When she’s not hosting tea parties, pairing wines with great food, or travelling the globe with her family, she’s actively imagining what the next “big thing” is going to be for her students. Of course, that’s how she got to where she is today. Jonae Pistoresi, M.B.A., has always had a passion for people. Born in Binghamton, New York, she grew up with her three younger siblings in Miami. She studied business and marketing at Santa Clara University where she met her husband, Tim, now a senior vice president of wealth management for Swiss banking giant UBS. After graduation and a marketing stint with a South San Jose homebuilder, she followed her sweetheart back to his hometown of Merced and immediately began looking for jobs with ad agencies and marketing powerhouses. She quickly learned, however, that the pace of life in Merced was much different than it had been in the South Bay. She ended up landing at local radio station 104.7 FM, where she would remain the marketing director until having her first child — daughter Katie — in 1988. Even though Pistoresi loved having a family (she later had a son, Nick), her active personality and entrepreneurial spirit kept her mind in overdrive. She soon found herself teaching business courses as an adjunct faculty member at Merced College, where she’s now been teaching for 24 years. Not long after she began teaching her first couple of business classes, Pistoresi started to pay attention to the comments coming from her students — thoughts and complaints of uncomfortable and hostile work environments, infighting, ill-prepared coworkers and untrained managers. Her idea was simple: to launch a module-based program that would both award college credit and prepare employees for the workplace. It was to be called the Customer Service Academy (CSA). Her immediate supervisor couldn’t find the money in the budget. The supervisor’s supervisor couldn’t either. Finally, Pistoresi ended up in the president’s office at Merced College, pleading for any kind of funding to launch the program. Former President of Merced College Benjamin Duran approved Jonae’s request and the CSA was born. It is now a nationally awarded program that is active in one form or another on 75 of California’s 112 community college campuses. And why does she do it? “I love to be entrepreneurial. I love to create new things. Because I’m a business professor, you have to stay current on what’s happening in real life. It forces me to be on top of new things!” Staying on top of human resources trends and best practices has certainly struck a chord with some major employers: the San Diego Chargers, Napa Wine Train, and major local companies like Foster Farms and Hilmar Cheese have all taken advantage of the CSA to train their employees and managers. After all this, you’d think she’d be tired. But instead, she’s busy at work building her next program, the Emerging Leaders Institute, which was inspired by her recent sabbatical at the Disney Institute and is set to officially launch next Fall 2014. “I’m passionate about the things I’m teaching, otherwise I wouldn’t be doing this. I believe it can help make lives better and I want to share that passion with other people,” she said. “Stay real and stay relevant.” #collegelife

WRITER: Adam Cox For Miriam Barlow, Merced is home. That’s saying a lot, considering where “home” has been in the past – Utah, Washington, New York, and Georgia, where she researched infectious bacteria at the national Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. “Merced,” says Barlow, “has a feeling about it that makes it special. It’s an easy place to feel safe and be individual.” It’s exactly that feeling that drew her to UC Merced some years ago to become a founding faculty member, but it’s the students that keep her here. “UC Merced students really are sweet and happy to be here to learn. With curriculum and courses always changing and expanding, the students here are much more flexible and understanding than other major campuses,” she praised. Turning her attention back to Merced as a place to live, Barlow chats excitedly about the great things Merced has to offer, “A short commute, downtown entertainment, and lots of culture,” she says, “I also have a garden to tend!” Perhaps one of the most interesting things about Dr. Barlow — who earned her Ph. D. from the University of Rochester in 2002 — is how she chooses to teach her courses and encourages her students not to just study the material, but to use it as well. As an expert on the evolution of bacteria and antibiotic resistance, Barlow knows all too well the dangers of germs. She recently offered her students the choice between writing a fairly simple paper, or putting in significantly more work and creating a public outreach campaign to educate the Merced community how to stay healthy and properly use antibiotics. Her class unanimously chose the latter, and they now work in groups to publish a Twitter feed, flyers, YouTube videos, and a Facebook page. They call it Project Protect, and they even raised $2,200 through an Indiegogo campaign to fund the materials they needed. In the future, Barlow plans to roll the project out to more community partners, including local health clinics, the hospital, nursing facilities and child care centers. But all of this is just the beginning, according to Barlow, “Next semester, I’m thinking about doing an art contest. Currently, no good images of antibiotic resistance exist, and this would be a great way of blending artistic creativity with scientific research.” As a founding faculty member in the nation’s newest research university, Barlow understands (and indeed, is attracted to) the unique needs of the population at UCM. “Many of the students are the first in their family to attend college, many worry about money, and a lot of them have a hard time connecting to both the faculty and other students,” she worried aloud. “I’m interested in the success of students – students from any background can succeed!” And with that attitude, she’s made it her personal mission to reach out to students on campus. Just a friendly nod or wave of the hand is sometimes enough to connect with them, she says. #collegelife

As a student in college, I personally know that many of us are constantly pressed for time. With this time crunch, we find ourselves struggling to eat something other than the all too stereotypical Kraft Mac and Cheese and Nissin Top Ramen. While these options may curb our appetite, they are far from anything ‘healthy’ and ‘homemade.’ During my freshman year of college, I quickly discovered that the cafeteria food served on campus would not suffice my almost hourly food cravings. The French fries, the pizza, the pasta, and the cookies just wouldn’t cut it for me! Many times for dinner, you would find me sitting and talking with friends while munching on several bowls of the magically delicious Lucky Charms. Even at 19-years-old, the marshmallows will forever be my favorite part of that cereal. Nevertheless, I knew that I wouldn’t last very long on sugar and carbohydrates. With a suggestion from family members, I made a quick trip to buy my very first Rival Crock-Pot. Although we were not allowed to have these in the dorms, I was not going to allow myself to starve in college while many were gaining their ‘Freshmen 15.’ After searching for meals online and asking my own mother for ideas, I started to master several meals which became personal favorites of friends living in my hall. If you are just learning how to cook or just want simple easy meals, then I’ve got some great recipes for you. I live by the phrase, “Minimal effort with maximum taste.” So many people are often afraid to cook because they are afraid of failure. Even the professionals had to start somewhere. If you’ve ever seen the movie Julie & Julia, think of the way Meryl Streep portrays Julia Child in the kitchen. Right as Streep flips the omelet, she misses the pan, splattering several bits of egg all over the counter. But Julia Child reminds us, “But you can always pick it up, and if you’re alone in the kitchen, who is going

to see?” That’s my exact point. Start out simple, and work your way from there. It is quite all right if your Beef Bourguignon or your chicken parmesan doesn’t turn out. Just make some adjustments to your recipe for the next time. Above, I’ve included two of my go-to meals for any day of the week. Like I said earlier, these recipes truly require minimal effort. You will be quite surprised with the outcome! These meals can all be prepared in the CrockPot (also known as a slow cooker) before you leave for work or school. They will be ready to go by dinnertime! I hope you find that these meals are as easy and delicious as I say they are. Trust me. It would be pretty difficult to mess these up. If you were trying to feed a group of friends, these meals would be perfect for just that. Your friends will honestly want to come back to your house/apartment/ dorm room for another meal. WHEN ASKED ABOUT HOW TO NURTURE SCHOOL SPIRIT, Merced College Athletic Director
Steve Cassady and UC Merced Director of Recreation and Athletics David Dunham both answered, “by winning.” Winning is a no brainer, but there’s more to it than a talented team of student athletes. It’s a balancing act for schools to not just have successful athletic teams, but to also create the best learning environment for students; those enrolled in courses within each school’s athletic department or a student athlete. Cassady was a faculty member in Merced College’s humanities department for 20 years before he was athletic director. Cassady

believes the science behind winning teams is quality level of engagement with students and having those students follow through with matriculation. “Athletes matriculate at a higher rate than the general student,” Cassady says. “State statistics demonstrate that student-athletes at Merced College matriculate at twice the number in half the time as the state averages.” One of the reasons students do better overall is that they must pass to play. “In order to play, they have to have the grades,” Cassady says. Student athletes at Merced College must be enrolled in at least 12 units a semester with a 2.0 grade point average. “From the start, a student athlete’s mission to succeed in sports is relevant to their success,” Cassady says. “Where else in the system is competition actually taught. Where else do they learn drive, focus, and sense of team — along with values and personal growth — we teach those things, “ he adds. With many years as an educator and sports writer, Cassady has known many athletes whose athletic careers began at a community college. One such person is legendary former Superbowl-winning NFL quarterback and former Superbowl-winning Raiders head coach, Tom Flores. Flores is one of two people in the NFL to win both a Superbowl as a player and head coach. “How many stories are out there — where the community college is the transition between nowhere and somewhere?” Cassady says. “Millions.” Dunham, UC Merced’s director of recreation and athletics since July 2005, also believes in successful students and a successful program. Starting out as an office of one, he now has a staff of over 30. With the new UC Merced student athletic center (opened in 2012), services have expanded. The new center has doubled the weight and cardio space and student organizations have access to four multipurpose rooms. The reach of UC Merced’s recreation and athletics program is also community-wide, not just for friends or family members of student athletes. “People tend to rally around athletics,” Dunham says. “We focus ////SEE PAGE40

Capacity is 700. “You get 300-400 people in there, it’s a competitive event,” Dunham says. The campus’ Midnight Madness event was sold out every year. Doors opened and at 9:30 p.m. and a lined was formed at 4 p.m. Midnight Madness showcased the men’s and women’s basketball teams and staff with half court and 3-point shootouts, and scrimmages. Within 15 minutes of the doors opening, they were at capacity. With their cheer squad, dance team, and Rufus, the bobcat mascot, it was a successful event that fostered school spirit. UC Merced’s program is relatively new. From 2005-2011, the university offered recreational club sport teams. In 2012, they had their first

varsity sports teams, women’s volleyball, men’s basketball and cross country. Currently, UC Merced has four men’s and women’s varsity sports teams. There is more planning in the next three-to-five years surrounding the athletic department and its programs. “We have great support from students. We’re still trying to work on the community knowing we’re here,” Dunham says. For those in the know, family fun is sure to be had at the games, and accessible to any budget. Sports like basketball are $5 per adult, free for twelve and under, $2 for graduate students and those students attending other universities. UC Merced undergraduate students are free. There are snacks and beverages, with soda at $2, and candy bars only $1. “Winning is always nice — that helps with everything,” Dunham says. “But that’s only part of it. Let’s put a good team on the field, have
fun in the stands, and I think everyone enjoys that.” Student athletes have found success at UC Merced as well. The university had their first All American player last year. Aki Chambers was named player of the year and named to the Division 2 All-American chosen from California. Ultimately, it’s not just winning that nurtures school spirit. It’s the chemistry and balancing act of pride in educational services, positive school culture, and supportive institutions and the engagement of a community. Having a community coming to events, rooting for student athletes to succeed in their sports and in the classroom is part of the formula to nurture school spirit and learning culture. AN OPTION FOR CAMPUS LIFE Students getting ready to begin their college careers may soon find themselves pondering how to ingrain themselves in their new communities. College presents opportunities to explore new interests and hobbies and make new friends in the process. One of the more popular ways students assimilate into campus life is by joining a Greek organization. Some students have gotten their first perceptions of Greek organizations from movies such as “Animal House” and “Old School,” but such depictions of Greek life are not entirely accurate. Greek organizations like fraternities and sororities date back hundreds of years, when the organizations were largely social associations formed in European universities. When colleges were founded in North America, many of the traces of student organizations and independence were not incorporated into modern-day learning. Students eventually set off to form their own groups to debate and discuss current events and literature that was not part of their college curriculum. Some met in secrecy, while some schools supported the free thinking of these clubs. One of the first American schools to establish a college society was the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va., where the Phi Beta Kappa Society was founded, setting the precedent
for naming North American college societies after Greek-letter initials. Other societies soon began to form under the basis of literary debates and other educational merits, like the Chi Delta Theta group at Yale. It was not until the Kappa Alpha society, the first general Greek letter fraternity, was formed at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., that the focus of fraternities turned from being merely academic to more socially-oriented. Many fraternities for men, and later sororities for women, began as localized Greek societies unique to particular schools. However, Sigma Phi, another fraternity formed at Union College, became the first Greek organization to es-
tablish a chapter at another college, making it the first national Greek organization. Today many Greek organizations have national reach. Modern-day Greek societies have moved beyond strictly academic pursuits. Many are now used as social, honorary and professional groups that promote a variety of ideals. Greek life encompasses many traditions. Some organizations keep their constitutions secret, while others advertise their goals and traditions in an effort to gain new membership. Original Greek societies based initiation rites on ceremonies borrowed from historical accounts, philosophy and literature. As time

went on, many of these classic rites were abandoned and fraternities created their own ceremonies. Some believe this is when “hazing” was established. There are different ways in which new members are inducted into Greek organizations. Some are given formal invitations initiated by current members. Many others are recruited through campus events and “Greek weeks.” In the past, such weeks were known as “rush,” and some schools still refer to them as such. The word “rush” comes from the period when Greek societies rushed to get to incoming freshmen first, luring them away from other organizations. Some organizations need to keep chapter houses full, while commuter schools may not have such large Greek presences on campus. Either way, fresh recruitment is needed each and every year in order to keep organizations alive. According to information published by StateUniversity.com, a school and university directory, more than 10 percent of all college students are members of a Greek-letter society. In the early 21st century, there were more than 5,500 chapters on 800 campuses throughout the United States and Canada. Generally, Greek organizations can be good places to meet new people and partake in various activities, including sports, parties, community service projects, and academic concentrations. However, fraternities and sororities have long been marred by poor public image due in part to hazing and parties that got out of control. Many schools have attempted to reform Greek organizations to improve Greek life and shift the focus from partying and destructive behaviors to more noble pursuits. New college students may want to learn about Greek organizations on campus. Fraternities and sororities can be a good way to expand social and educational horizons while at school. #collegelife
