Tufted Duck (Aythya fuligula)

Hanzhuo Sun hanzhuosun@hotmail.com Hsun10@sheffield.ac.uk 07476936699 G169C 4 Malinda Street, Sheffield, UK S37LS An International student studied Landscape Architecture in University of Sheffield with landscape architecture with ecology. I am well organized and hard-working and always keen to learn new skills. Passionate about the universe we live in and the landscape that surrounds us. I chose to take specialist modules in ecology in my second and third years as I have a strong involvement in integrating nature with design. I have a real taste for the outdoor environment and when I am not exploring it through study, I like to enjoy it in my spare time

Project 1 Sustainble Housing Project

Distictive bird, the female is entirely chocolate-brown, while the male is black with white flanks and a long tuft at the back of the head. Feeding: waterweed, plant seeds and aquatic invertebrates. The Blackburn meadows have large area of weeds and aquantic plants around two lakes and one seasonal pond, and more marsh area will be proposed on site for tufted duck living habitat.

Habitat creation suggestion - Keep existing aquntaic plants around the lake - Extend marshes area for tufted duck to conceal nest - Construct 2 birds hide near the lake, and keep people away from the habitat.

Some Tufted Duck may migrate from northern part of UK, Iceland.

Potencial population growth The Old moor wildlife reserve was an important reserve for tufted duck, during the autumn the Old moor are meet large movements of migrating birds from scotland, Iceland and cold Arctic, Tufted duck is one of the species within this large group. The Blackburn Meadows is located in the central of England, and also in the potencial route of migratory birds. The blackburn Meadow Nature Reserve could be the potencial resident habitat or the temporary refuge for receiving the duck both from cold Arctic and Old moor in the future.

Project 2 Intergrated urban design project Female choose marshes area or lake with plenty of vegetation to conceal the nest

They prefer shallow water ranging from 3 to 5 m deep, with tall thick wetland vegetation, eg. Reeds.

During the winter they can be found generally in larger bodies of open water

Suastainable housing project The Summerfield One Sheffield October 2016 This third year project looked at creating a sustainable housing development inspired by a chosen case study and past precedents. It provides the opportunity to explore different approaches to the sustainable development of a housing site, socially ecologically and economically. The site is the former location of Gordon Lamb Saab showroom, located in the Porter Valley. Ecclesall Road borders this site to the immediate north, Napier Street to the south, Summerfield Road to the east and Pear Street to the west.

Housing Type

To involve local authorities and residents in developing the community in which can leads to the appropriate and relevant needs and wishes of local condition, the consultation and participation can engender a responsibility and pride in where people live.

STRATEGIES Vegetation - The trees along the riverside are mainly design for providing an aesthetic view and as natural shelter for protecting privacy of residents, it also contains ecological functions, such as plant water tolerant Swale plants in order to purify and reduce stormwater risks. The fruit trees could to be planted in a productive landscape with seasonal interests, also create privacy and a sense of ownership. The trees planted in the central area are designed for shade and seasonal color.

- Mix of 28 units of terraced houses and 6 units flat, meet the housing need from different age and social groups, at the same time enrich the diversity of the community. - Place new terraced houses in south-north direction aims to face more sunlight depending on the current sunlight range.

Circulation - A fluent pedestrian and bicycle route is proposing around the community, - A five meter wide emergency vehicle route could allow various type of vehicles access in special situation. - Shared car park is placed on the corner of southwest.

Ownership To create a housing community that could provide a variety of spaces both for individual activities and communal spaces. - To create extensive protected shared communal space, and Provide space for gentle, passive activities, bringing hobbies and community events outside and provide chances for corporation, exploration and sharing. - Open view back garden as personalized space for residents. - Encourage public transport lifestyles and cycle through place enough cycle parking space and cycle route around the housing area.

The ‘Triangle’ shape stands for the enclosure, protected living environment in order to not only create a strong sense of community, but also to encourage positive social activities.

Intergrated urban design project New Island site Nottingham

Design concept: The new vision for the island site is to create a highly active space providing daily free programming with various rhythms. Two axes converge from the train station and wider residential area at new island site serves the long-term patronage and short term stay of the crowd. Everyone can find a comfortable place to matching their mood and melody in the heart. Movementl Strategy

May 2017 This project worked to remediate the issue related tp the reclaimed brownfield site located in the centeral area of Nottingham and develop it into a new urban businesses and a residential community that has its own distinctive identity and character.

The proposed change will increase the richness of the place and also supports the development of the local economy at the same time. One third area will be proposed as commercial and office area. The central public green area served educational and residential area with a variety of recreational uses and meet the needs of all kinds of people. Spatial Strategy

The existing city link road will be reserved as main vehicle route cross the whole site. A pedestrian grid aims to provide the high permaebility site and connects the new island site to surrounding context. The cycling path proposed along the retention pond and separate with a pedestrian path with different landscape experience.

Masterplan

The new island retention pond walk is an emotional landscape. It offers a variety of rich and rhythmic spaces. Diversifying from formal style landscape to the natural form of the water side of resting, breathing, playing life. The characteristics of each style phase are represented by textures, functions, spaces, and selection of plant species. The contrasting ground paving aims to create different features between pedestrian route and cycling path.

Formal Phase

The formal pond edge area will provide a resting and meeting for functions during the lunch break or leisure time and served for commercial & office groups, as well as acting as a bright mirror to provide clam and peace for visitors.

Middle Phase

Cross pond bridge provides outlook line for passing and calm, overlooking both the still water and natural pond view. Alternatively, the middle pond area as the widest span area in the whole long retention pond, giving opportunities for feeling standing on the top of the water.

Natural Phase Detailed design area Natural pond area provides an enclosed and intimate space, with scented and textured plants climbing on the grassy slope to create a sense of involvement and vitality. The cross pond stepping steps and water edge platform increase sensory involvement in the environment, proving restorative private spaces.

Habitat Creation Project: BlackBurn Meadows Natural Reserve November 2016 This project was developed detailed design proposals for the new Blackburn Meadows Visitor Centre, and its associated landscape (Equivalent to Landscape Institute Work Stage D) I was asked to develop a new masterplan, showing details of a revised layout, paying specific attention to ecology, biodiversity vegetation and visitor center design.I also deeded to develop detailed and technical design proposals for habitat and biodiversity features, these technical details should be tailored to encourage three appropriate target species. I chose the Tufted Duck, Orange Tip, Lesser spotted woodpecker. Blackburn Meadows Nature Reserve, when it was created, was Europe’s largest habitat creation project, creating wetland habitats on the site of a former waste-water treatment works. However, in recent years it has largely been abandoned, and only the most basic maintenance is being carried out.

The new visitor center of the Blackburn Meadow Nature Reserve is located on the southern part of the site, the visitor center location selection are considering the distance to Magna center, car park and centricity. The whole building is surrounded by natural environment, it includes different vegetation types, such as wetland planting, deciduous woodland, wildflower meadows, etc. It proposed to attract wildlife in the nature reserve to the visitor center by creating different wildlife habitat around the building. Also, the natural water play pond with stepping stones and wildflowers extension deck could provide more chance for visitors to contact with nature. Inside of the visitor center is mainly about recreational and educational uses, various forms of science education could stimulate interest in nature discovery. Also, the visitors could get 360-degree view from the visitor center.

Foreign Field Trip, Reykjavik September 2016 Part of the September semester involved a field trip to our chosen destination of Rekijavik. Part of the work for this required us to look at a particular aspect of the city. I chose the 'The journey of water' and produced a digital portfolio of drawings inspired by this.

Journey of water in Reykjavik
