POCKET PARKS

Urban Waterfronts are desirable for many reasons and have become a focal point of development in cities. The Newtown Creek waterfront, which is located between Brooklyn and Queens, has high potential for industrial development as well as opportunities for mixed use and recreation to bring the surrounding neighborhood together. Although industries in Newtown Creek are less active than in the past, the area is still heavily used by industry and can take advantage of being at the waterfront and having water-dependent transportation. New York City has designated the site a ‘Priority Marine Activity Zone’ and suggests supporting industrial and maritime activities within New York City’s Waterfront Revitalization Program (WRP). Due to serious and definite contamination, including crucial oil spills and dumping of raw sewage, Newtown Creek has become one of the most polluted industrial sites in the U.S. Newtown Creek is a designated Superfund site. The Newtown Creek Superfund is essentially dealing with the water body itself, not the land surrounding it. Another important issue about the site is the lack of public access points for the waterfront, which are difficult to find and can be unsafe for users. This project explores sustainable waterfront development in Newtown Creek, focusing on a water purification strategy while enhancing economic and social values of the site. Analyses include evaluation of efforts, needs, and issues of the local communities and organizations concerned with the site. The design is intended to connect neighborhoods to the waterfront, offering safe and pleasant public access, allowing people to celebrate an underused opportunity.

1. LOOKING TOWARDS WATER TAXI TERMINAL AND WATERFRONT PLAZA Extended water taxi system to the Newtown Creek will be the optimal alternative as a new transportation for the local workers and people who travel to Manhattan everyday. Also collected and purified storm water through the site will celebrated with fountain and water fall.

2. OUTDOOR SPACE IN FRONT OF THE REPURPOSED RECREATION CENTER All kinds of outdoor activities can happen her. Canoeing, Skateboarding, Bike riding, Basketball, and climbing. On the roof of the recreation center which is repurposed from existing food cooperation building, generating energy from solar panels and hydroponic urban gardening can happen.

“The Linkage� is located in the City of Nogales, AZ where the I-11 corridor will cross the U.S./Mexico border. The site is comprised of the two ports of entry and the area between the two ports. The team has identified the creation of a link between the two ports as the highest priority. The link will incorporate a visa-less recreation area that will connect both ports, the U.S. and Mexico and provide a safe space for interaction between people and nature. The area will also create a pedestrian crossing connection that is currently missing at the Mariposa Port of Entry.

Finally, the team has rerouted the freight train to the Mariposa Port of Entry where the facilities and the infrastructure is most suited for it and has kept the rail at the DeConcini port for a passenger train that will further strengthen the link between the people of Ambos Nogales. The biggest challenge was how we overcome and use extreme slope of the site. All sources of form are from Natural system. Creating wetlands at the low points of the site to collect the storm water. For locating pedestrian trail system and observation towers, analyse the relatively flat areas.

AMPHITEATER AND WALKING PATH WITHIN WETLAND Created wetland became gathering place for travellers across the border and local residents. It has amphitheater and various walking trails.


VIEWING WETLAND SYSTEM LOOKING TOWARDS PEDESTRIAN PROMENADE There are various pedestrian connections. First one is main promenade by the vegetated land berms as buffer between truck route. Second one is over bridge to the new conference center by the border and the others are diverse trails to the wetland.

Hierarchy of roads and programs

The main roads are 10-10meters wide with 2-5 story mixed-use buildings along them. Some buildings are located near to intersections are corner stores and the others are offices. The density of buildings is less and lower in areas further from the main roads.

New grids During the exploration map, the site, I found interesting point of edges. To make interesting and playful edges, I set a couple of factors which affect the new residential area. A new grid was established from the surrounding context rather than the existing road system.

Possible activity zone I abstracted the spatial pattern from the surrounding area to develop new activity zones for open space along the perimeter edge. This move created visual access to this site as well as defined the boundary for the built environment. 6m two-way road,+bike+pedestrian 3m one-way road,+bike+pedestrian 3m one-way road,+pedestrian 3m,1.8m wide_Only pedestrian

Network system

Locate all civic buildings(Library, Recreation center, Movie theater) in 120m buffer from 10-12 roads intersections. Also for each intersections of the other roads, set the function as a corner store.

“Adventure Come True” is a mysterious playground for not only children and but also adults. This garden is located right next to the Children’s Museum and gives users a contemporary labyrinth. It is not shaped as a formal labyrinth and requires way-finding to users. It offers different scenes with six different zones and diverse plant palettes, hard scape materials, changes in ground level, and structures. Each zone’s design starts with a different feeling, like ‘Calm’ and ‘Enjoy’, but interpretation of the areas is up to the users. It is meant to sometimes squeeze you through a narrow path and bring you to a point. Are you ready to start an adventure come true?

Location called “Trojmezi(Three Borders)”is the undeveloped area with total area over 110ha on the border of Praha 10,11 and 15, surrounded on all sides estate Chodov Sporilov, Zabehlice, Garden City, Hostivar and baskets. Three Borders lies in the natural park Hostivar - Zabehilce. The diverse ecosystems found in Trojmezi include meadow fields, forest and riparian zone by the wash. The experts stated that tehre are relatively few invasive plant species found in the site. Thus it is important to keep Trojmezi as a semi-natural park with most of domestic species. It is the last piece of nature, sandwiched between high-rises on all sides. For residents of surrounding neighborhoods, It is only few possibility of interacting with nature.

We divide the Korea’s present urban housing into three different types; flat-type apartment housing, tower-type apartment housing and hill terraced housing. In order to meet the needs of many different people according to their lifestyle and values, we tried to strengthen the strength and make up for the weakness of these three types of urban housing. We mixed and arranged flat-type and tower-type apartment considering climate factors (Shadow nearby building, public space / reducing solar energy harvesting / wind turbulence ) To cover poor security of terraced houses, this type of house located on the upper part of flat-type apartment.
