This portfolio is a collection of architectural works which are the result of my thoughts on design, experimenting in diverse ways and realizing in the world. In the first chapter, I start by thinking of the very reason why human beings started to create things to make my own definition of design. I then focus on my architectural projects. My general design method is made clear and it is repeatedly manifested for the projects that follow for the architecture of the happiness. With specific sites and programs, I tried to solve every possible story from varied perspective. I would like to thank my teacher in Korea, close friends around the world and professors at GSD, Harvard who helped me greatly in varied ways to develop and organize my thoughts and would love to thank my parents and God for supporting me unconditionally.

Design
design : Design is a process of finding and setting up logics in a seemingly chaotic nature to achieve a specific intention. Humans have continued designing from small objects to the larger built environment, with varying design typologies or styles from history to survive and to live better in existing environmental, cultural, user-specific conditions. Specifically, architectural designing is keen on setting up logics in spatial organization, ways of segmentation or integration, a direction of light, an assemblage of material, formal structure, etc. In other words, it is about constantly discovering spatial possibilities while progressing. Ontological aspects of architecture are undeniable, and it has an enormous impact on life in or of a city and on a local economy.
Nature
Nature is not about green. It is more about existing conditions without any external intervention. It could be wild life green untouched by human but it could also include seemingly man-made creation such as an architecture or a city before additional modification. In a superficial sense, it may appear complex and chaotic but it holds certain degree of rules and systems. True chaosmos exists in all nature.
Human creation and Nature
Seemingly chaotic nature is symbolized as haphazardly shaped plaster board. Orthogonal grids within the haphazard shape describes the human effort in search of logics within nature or design to make changes to given conditions. It derives from, and is part of, the nature, but this orthogonal system inherently holds the possibility of generating a different, new, nature; a new system. Diagonal lines (new nature, new system) are produced by these precedented systems (nature, grids and grids in haphazard shape) followed by the endless creation of newer nature, system, and designs.

Thus, creation occurs from interactions of at least two varied systems (VARIED SYSTEMS AND CREATION 1). It is reactant of those varied systems and has function of giving ideal relationship among varied systems. One of the most premitive design or systems that human created from nature is stone tools intended to achieve specific goals, to interact(survive) better in nature(existing conditions). Characteristics of human creation as such can be expressed through actions that can happen with rules between two architectures, each of which has varied logics.

The architectural structure developed in this sense, possibly between two buildings within an urban environment, acts as a mediator for the ideal relationship between the two. This portfolio consists of architectural design works with diverse approaches toward giving different but quintessential relationships among varied systems and design processes to discover spatial possibilities in a given condition.

01 Design Fundamentals _Hidden Room Academic / Experimental Work _2019.09 _Program: Pavilion _Location: Experimental
This project shows another relationship between two varied systems. The ideal relationship for two varied systems (four standard rooms versus one hidden room) this project intended to achieve is set through showing the subtle differences existing within two different logics by hiding the fifth room, the anomaly. Accomplished architectural design for this project does not act as a mediator to act between two varied systems. Instead, it holds these two varied systems together as if there is one system only by having all rooms in an irregular shape with four sides. However, this does not mean that one system overtakes the other. Difference between the two systems is that four rooms are connected as a loop while the path to the fifth room from the fourth is deliberately concealed and not connected to any other rooms. A visitor is likely to go around and around the loop, endlessly seeking access to the courtyard, which is the only source of light to the four normal rooms. However, it can only be reached after arriving the hidden fifth room.

Even when the visitor reaches the fifth room, confronted by a huge glass wall to the exterior. With all the irregular shaped rooms that he went through in a loop, he is likely to lose his sense of direction. The exterior space may be conceived of as the courtyard that he has been looking for. This leads the visitor to exit the building. In this sense, the courtyard becomes another hidden room, that can only be accessed through the door hiding behind the staircase landing in the fifth room.

These two images illustrate how visitors are intrigued by the middle courtyard while they are in the four rooms and how they exit the building believing they are going to the courtyard or without knowing the way to the courtyard.

Affected Block Plan
This project displays how a foreign gesture(system1) could have an effect on a typical, even imaginary, urban context(system2) for its structure in varying degrees. Typical residential blocks have been intruded by an anomalous triangular-shaped block, the foreign system. The character of each block is interrupted and reshaped. They no longer stay monotonous, and rather develop their own diverse landscape. This differentiates the atmosphere and sets certain environmental features for each block. The newly characterized blocks attract more specific types of users by providing a living environment tailored to more variety of people.

The intrusion of the triangular-shaped block even affects the design at the architectural scale, particularly. On the triangular-shaped block, where houses are arranged following the sides of the triangle. Relationships between houses become the most dramatic at the vertices of the triangle, where the original triple-decker home is placed with other houses at a tighter angle. At the most acute vertex, three triple-deckers are affected by this urban intrusion. One intersection creates an opening to the courtyard. At another intersection two houses merge and the circulation inside diverges. This new relationship provides new function to serve the neighbors such as restaurants, laundromats, shops and etc.

Within the region filled with luxury shops, it is likely to feel exclusiveness even from the street. The aim of this project is to make the region feel less exclusive by creating space that people can move around in freely. The farm can sustain itself from high land value by having the production and consumption of crops at the same place through facilities such as the farm, market, restaurants, etc. The logic of the division of the path was adopted to accommodate such places more effectively, lessening the urban separation in the city.

In order not to have a huge solid wall to act as a barricade, each triangular facade was divided and twisted so as to have a certain degree of revelation and communication. Without getting inside the structure, people can still look into the building and feel the lowered exclusiveness which is extremely widespread in the surrounding area. Such narrowed pieces that make up the facades also provide shadows that change their shapes over time.

While working as a good communicator with locals here, the building can also be used to collect fine dust in the air. Using rainwater to flow from the top of the roof following the surface of the triangles, it can truly give the fresh scent of greeneries within the busy city center. This project starts from a search for an alternative living space to the existing order of the apartment, which often fails to make the natural order of human life lively enough. Apartment housing is good at airtight packing private lives within lunch boxes with mono privacy level and stacking them efficiently. Therefore, it is likely to wonder if it is ever possible to create a space that could generate joyful events within a city while maintaining the structural and mechanical efficiency that modern apartment housing requires. The design process focuses on apartments for one person which are growing in number in recent years. It is assumable that people living by themselves are more likely to feel alone and in need of good natural interactions with others than people who live with friends or family. This project focuses on providing space for natural interactions in the city and also space for varied individuals who might not always be satisfied with lunch box space when they want to do some special activities of their own, like raising a giraffe.
The smallest volume that people need is figured and made it into unit space. Varied privacy levels are then assigned to each area. Three to four people share a kitchen, a dining room and some facilities like laundry, so each person can have a slightly larger private space. Each unit is stacked randomly allowing some voids between the units on a grid and core system for structural and mechanical efficiency. This provides a diverse flow of users, views and spaces and encouraging natural interaction among residents.

As it shares structural and mechanical efficiency through the grid and core system and helps people interact in a very casual way, this type of architecture can be constructed in any part of the world, growing or shrinking in varying sizes and shapes. Moreover, it can also be proliferated rapidly and densely for it already sustains the concept of having vacant spaces within.
04 Abiogenesis, Beyond the Boundaries Academic Work _Architectural Design Studio 7 _2013. 03 _Program: Residential _Location: Suji, Yongin, Korea _Top Prize, Graduation project
This project started with a call from a younger version of myself asking for something that suits my hometown more than indiscriminate boxes that development companies have built in the region. In-depth research on the region and its socio-geographical merits was inevitable to further develop what to design and how to design it. It was concluded that the site is best for raising children because it is close to nature and has easy access to multiple commuting routes. An optimal place for raising children is one where kids are encouraged to interact with neighbors and are exposed to nature and to diverse inter-exterior spatial experiences. To provide such a place, the process of how dandelion seeds disperse and settle in ground was adopted. Interacting with other seeds and with the surrounding environment, each seed grows in varying shapes and heights. If this process in nature is applied to the design process, it can produce a field of enclosed areas (flowers) blending well into one another and into the environment, keeping its territory and creating diverse spaces. In other words, though it shares some concepts with the project Apart from Apartments such as privacy level, diverse spaces and active interactions among residents, it sets aside the grid and core system. The degree of freedom of possible forms and organizations is maximized for a place for kids. As in previous projects, two systems -- the dandelion seeds and their given conditions -- come together, and a new system emerges from them.

Not all the creation through interactions among varied systems become the shape of slab, wall, and roofs. Some end up as a pattern for the landscape or outdoor furniture. Others can even turn up as tunnels that only children can hang out in. Small openings that usually lead below their homes can encourage them to explore wonderous spaces. On top of that, shared kitchen and space for storage are provided to accommodate residents' needs properly. These communal areas can be used as a place for gathering and sharing lives.

Baby tunnels can even help them go to their friends' houses. Children can play freely all across the complex. They will have greater family bonds and learn to boost up their ability to interact with others.

Apart from the tunnels, many architectural gestures conducive to child behaviors have been included. Smaller spaces under the stairs are good example. Children can have their own territories where, like the tunnels, adults cannot get in.

This project deals with providing a localized place for a mixed-use building. With small houses of the old district of Chungmuro, Seoul, three folds of the ground incorporate the region's minute urban structures of old houses and hilly roads to maximize the usage of the built environment.

While developing massing studies, the central idea was to create a place more connected to the flow of people in the region. To achieve this in small footprint, three floors act as ground levels even though only one of them, the typical ground level, meets the street. Part of the typical ground level sinks under to provide the second ground level. And small middle garden on the second floor provides the third ground level and offers a differentiated place for people who work there. Our design decisions created varied spaces with varied characteristics for diverse people.

We selected design alterations to offer a quiet facade for the busy street. The façade for the building that existed before was red brick, a common material used in the region. We chose cement block to offer a sense of modernity while sustaining the character of the old district.
