Letter of motivation
My understanding of architecture comes from imagination. When I was young, I always imagined what the small house I lived in could be like. It was an old-fashioned welfare house, featuring the layout of the last century. Its living room was separate inside while my room faced the kitchen, causing problems of ventilation and lighting. Hence, I could not help fancying knocking down the walls between my room and dining room. Moving to the previous living room, we would have an oversized living room and a comfortable bedroom. It was from this imagination that I began to observe the surrounding buildings and constantly imagine what these buildings can look like.
This kind of imagination inspired my love for architecture, and also cultivated my subjectivity in architecture studies. Although this subjectivity may be considered a gimmick in a sense, I still like it. The first works in my portfolio is the reconstruction of Buwa village, a place I visited during my tour in 2019. It was destroyed in the earthquake in 2008. It arrested me almost the first time I saw it since it was manifested in countless possible ways in my mind. I was reluctant to see this old village with a long history buried in this way, so in the course design project, I reconstructed it with imagination.
These imaginations kept inspiring me during the whole process of my architectural design: the snow-capped mountains outside the long windows, the garden next to the waiting hall, and the sparkling water reflecting the galaxy. There are even more exaggerated senses: the tall towers jutting out of the loess land, the huge membrane structure like bird feathers, and the galaxy falling from the night sky swept the mountains like a flood. These imaginary images served as the motivation for my design and the moment I hope to move people. `But architecture is not an endless imagination, we need to have enough knowledge to complete these imaginations. These free imaginations also need to be compatible with the needs of users and the environment. Because of the cold climate of Buwa village , in the reconstruction plan

of Buwa village , I first retained the use of local unique rammed earth insulation materials, and modernized the rammed earth wall structure to adapt to modern life while maintaining heat preservation. demand.
In addition, through the research on the local traditional heating method, the fire pond, and the waste of heat in the production of jam during the reorganization of the local industry, I designed a special heat circulation system to solve the problem of heating at night. And the application of the tensile membrane structure and etfe air pillow structure in the Mohan high-speed railway station is also to deal with the energy consumption of the building caused by the local subtropical climate. The tensioned membrane structure adjusts the direct sunlight to the main body of the building, and the three cavities between the four-layer transparent etfe membrane structure took away the heat from the building surface, reducing the need for indoor lighting.
If I continue my study at Edin , it can help me fulfill those imagined scenes better. It is as if my thoughts are like a kite flying in the sky one day while the study of architecture is pulling the line of the kite, combining these imaginations with reality. I am very interested in the Architectural Design Studio A taught by Dr Dorian Wiszniewski at Edin . I hope that through the study of these courses at Edin , this line of control imagination can be made tougher. When I meet the next Buwa village , I can better complete my design in my imagination. Thus, I eagerly hope to join Edin to continue my architectural studies.
