HONEY…I SHRUNK THE BASESTATION Sundance Focuses Multiprocessor Design and Multiprocessing Technology onto GSMA’s Mobile’s Green Manifesto. Reduces Telecom Infrastructure Footprint, Energy Consumption and CO2 Emissions – Improves Performance and Economics. London, UK – 2 December 2010 – Sundance, the leading supplier and manufacturer of advanced digital signal processing and reconfigurable FPGA systems today announced availability of its modular EVP6472-903 Dual WiMax RF Module multiprocessing solution. The energy smart EVP6472-903 feature two multicore DSPs with twelve TMS320C64x+™ processor cores clocked at 500MHz for telecom demanding real time processing. The product development is aligned to the trend and commitment made by the worldwide mobile communications industry to boost economic performance, improve efficiencies and increase the use of green technology. By employing multiprocessor technology, Operators and OEMs can improve performance, lower costs, reduce their infrastructure size and lower their carbon footprint. “Multiprocessing has always delivered on performance, cost and scalability”, said Flemming Christensen, managing director of Sundance Multiprocessor Technology Ltd. “However its energy credentials have often been overlooked and we are addressing this through our product announcement. As the industry continues to invest in infrastructure deployment it requires lower energy consumption - both directly, and indirectly through reductions in space cooling and a/c. Multiprocessing is low risk technology that provides a unique set of features and benefits and this, coupled with the inherent energy efficiencies of multiprocessing architectures, mean they are becoming an increasingly important solution within Green IT.” The EVP6472-903 features Dual 500MHz C6472 DSPs and Virtex-5 FXT FPGA. It incorporates 2 Maxim Wimax (IEEE802.16-2004) Transceivers that operate at 2.3 – 2.7 GHz. The transceivers integrate a power amplifier driver, receive/transmit mixer, low-noise amplifier, receive/transmit filters, synthesizer, VCO, receive gain control, and transmit power control. Each RF transceiver is coupled with a Mixed-Signal Front End chip from Analog Devices that integrates two 12-bit ADCs (80MSPS) as well as two 12-bit DACs (200MSPS using interpolation), to provide analog and digital conversions and ensure a sufficient level of precision for Wimax applications. Clocking circuits enable the board to run the transceivers and the converters from internal 40MHz VC-TCXO, an external input, a PLL or the FPGA on the base module. The EVP6472-903 is supported by Windows 7 and Linux system environments and free Xilinx ISE Webpack software can be downloaded to target the Virtex-5 FPGA. TI’s Code Composer Studio 4.0 supports design for the C6472 multicore DSPs and a Firmware Control Module permits simple

and unrestricted access to all control registers from a user friendly CLanguage API. Christensen added, “we are better enabling Operators and OEMs to increase the performance and density of their infrastructure processing and at the same time use less direct and in-direct energy. It’s because of this, and the inherent energy efficiencies of multiprocessing architectures, that they are becoming an increasingly important solution with Green IT.” Further details and pricing information for the EVP6472-903 are available from http://www.evp6472.com/ or by contacting your local Sundance Sales Office. PRESS RELEASE December 2008

SUNDANCE EXPANDS IP PORTFOLIO WITH IMAGING CORES FROM CADRE CODESIGN Sundance

Combines

DSP

FPGA

Multiprocessing Modules With JPEG IP From Cadre Codesign To Deliver Low Cost, High Performance Imaging Solutions to the Medical Imaging, Security and Machine Vision Markets.

London, UK and Montreal, Canada - 15 December 2008

– Sundance,

the leading supplier and manufacturer of advanced digital signal processing and reconfigurable FPGA systems, announced today that is has extended its partnership with Cadre Codesign, a specialist provider of IP and embedded FPGA design solutions, to deliver Cadre’s CT-JPEG04 core across a range of it’s modular DSP FPGA multiprocessor hardware solutions. Based on the JPEG ISO/IEC IS 110918-1 standard image-compression algorithm, the core compresses images of 1280 x 1024 pixels resolution at a rate of 500 frames/sec and can sustain an input of one 8 bit pixel every 660MHz. This level of performance makes the solution ideally suited to applications where images are either analyzed on the fly or stored for later reference and analysis. The Cadre Codesign core significantly outperforms standard off-the shelf JPEG cores that can typically sustain inputs of 4MB (64K x 64K images) frames at 30 frames per second and generate outputs of 122 MB/sec.

Provided with a ModelSim

evaluation model the core will be initially available on Sundance’s Digital Video Infrastructure Platform (DVIP) that offers developers a complete, integrated solution for digital video development. Built on Sundance’s modular and infinitely-scalable multiprocessing concept, the DVIP leverages the performance and flexibility of two TI TMS320C6455 digital signal processors (DSP) and a TMS320DM642 DSP-based digital media processor. The 1GHz C6455 DSPs allow multiple processors to be connected via a Serial Rapid I/O (SRIO) interface and the DVIP incorporates Xilinx Virtex-4 FX60 FPGAs that are the implementation target for Cadre’s CT-JPEG04 core. The modular architecture of the DVIP allows customers to increase the processing performance in the field and add one of more than 40 additional variant modules that support the Sundance TIM (Texas Instruments Module) standard. As this standard is open-domain, it is also possible to integrate proprietary solutions. Design support is provided via 3L’s Diamond multiprocessor tool-suite that provides a highly automated development flow from concept through to applications running in multiprocessor hardware and Code Composer Studio from TI. Pierre Popovic, Cadre Codesign’s president commented, “a key issue facing developers

who

use

conventional

systems

is

storage

of

the

524

MB/sec

(monochrome) or 1.535 GB/sec (color) outputs generated by today’s high

performance cameras, and this is compounded by Bus technology that struggles to sustain more than 250 MB per second. By marrying our CT-JPEG04 core with FPGA technology we provide an optimal compression solution that overcomes the bus bottleneck and storage problem.” The agreement with Cadre broadens the Sundance offer to application developers targeting high-end video and imaging systems and is another addition to the IP ecosystem that supports Sundance’s multiprocessing platforms. “As we continue to increase the number of application optimized multiprocessor modules, we’ve aligned with IP providers to support their roll-out to particular customer segments and application groups,” said Flemming Christensen, managing director of Sundance Multiprocessor Technology Ltd. “By strengthening our partnership Cadre, we

can

offer

greater

choice

to customers developing video and imaging

applications, whether they are in the military, research or enterprise space.” Available from your local Sundance sales office, prices are subject to module configuration and FPGA type. For more information email enquiries@sundance.com or visit www.sundance.com.

exhibited at the Embedded Systems Conference, Hynes Convention Center, Boston MA 28th – 29th October 2008. Radio Giga’s XTP capabilities are driven by the Sundance commitment to modular design that integrates cutting edge multiprocessing technologies and backwards compatibility with already deployed architectures.

In its headline configuration

Radio Giga features multiple Virtex 4 and Virtex 5 Xilinx FPGAs, Dual C Series TI DSP engines with 260MBytes/s Serial RapidIO (SRIO) communication links, Power PC processor cores and 6 channels of low power GHz e2v ADC.

Being 1U

compliant, Radio Giga delivers incredible rack real-estate efficiencies and offers both Gigabit Ethernet and USB interconnect. “Feedback from the design community tells us that Ragio Giga is their signal processing Nirvana’, said Flemming Christensen, managing director of Sundance Multiprocessor Technology Ltd. ‘It was expressly designed to deliver optimal performance into the high end comms market and its ‘X’…TP factor allows designers to switch between current and next generation technologies on a common platform. This delivers huge benefits in terms of verification, IP reuse and design migration.” To support I/Q demodulation and to get the digitizing accuracy needed for Radio Giga, Sundance selected dual 1Gsps ADC from e2v.

Its integrated demultiplexer

and easy interleaving are user friendly and easy to use, and its low power characteristics were consistent with Radio Giga’s small energy footprint. 6 channels of GHz e2v ADC are available on Radio Giga for maximum bandwidth. “The selection of e2v high speed data converters by Sundance is further recognition of the high level of performance needed for next generation applications,” said Andrew Benn, product marketing manager at e2v. “This choice underscores e2v’s commitment to excellent electrical performance and low power consumption (700mW/channel) without compromising on integration and flexibility via the 3-wire serial programming interface.”

With an operating frequency of 1GHz and 2MB on-chip level 2 cache each, the dual C6455 TI GHz DSPs deliver the highest fixed point processing power in the C6000 family.

Design support is available from TI’s Code Composer StudioTM and 3L’s

Diamond multiprocessor tool suite, and Radio Giga’s hardware conforms to the Texas Instruments Module (TIM) standard. “TI is committed to providing the highest levels of performance available to help innovative customers achieve the needed functionality for processing intensive applications,” said Primo Castro, product line manager, TI. “By taking advantage of TI’s high performance programmable DSPs, Radio Giga is able to provide a user configurable technology platform to help differentiate their solutions for advanced communications devices.” In addition to dual C6455 TI GHz DSPs, Radio Giga features the most powerful FPGAs from Xilinx. Already used as the environment of choice for High Speed Direct IF by some of the world’s leading electronics companies, the SMT8121 delivers 1Gsps sustained performance and features high performance, low power FPGAs and DSPs connected to multi-channel high speed data converters from e2v.

The SMT8121 is a modular system comprising e2v’s

AT84AD001BCTD Dual 8-bit 1Gsps ADC, multiple Xilinx Virtex II Pro and Virtex 4 FPGAs, TI C64 DSP and DAC technology from Fujitsu. Used for multi-carrier/ multi-standard cellular systems, high direct-IF infrastructures, radar systems and test equipment the SMT8121 provides two input and two output channels each sampling at 1Gsps.

“In the SMT8121 we have a platform that is geared to supporting an array of next generation communications services and roadmap applications for the hand-set manufactures and cellular base-station providers”, said Flemming Christensen, managing director of Sundance Multiprocessor Technology Ltd. “The SMT8121 supports the drive for a Software Defined Radio platform that can handle Direct IF, and its low power and high performance mean it is a practical solution in environments that range from the boardroom to the battlefield.

With plans now confirmed for

airlines to offer mobile communication services we are also seeing

interest from the developers of advanced in-flight communications systems.”

With the SMT8121 focused on applications where fast sampling speed (up to 2Gsps), flat spectral output , high input analog bandwidth and very low power consumption are key factors, the dual channel ADC data converter from e2v technologies was selected by Sundance developers. The e2v solution not only met the GHz performance and low power specification needed for the SMT8121, but also provided a user-friendly serial programming (3-wire) interface for rapid design and set-up over a range of target markets including aerospace, defense and satellite.

“Our fast GHz ADC technology has provided a benchmark for design flexibility, ease-of-use and performance for numerous applications including software radio, test equipment and communications” said Andrew Benn, Product Marketing Manager at e2v. “e2v continues to provide technology

leadership with higher performance and greater

design flexibility with the Quad 8-bit 5Gsps ADC. The investment made by Sundance in our ADC technology is testament not only to the technical performance of our solutions but also the cost advantage we provide in very high performance systems.”

The SMT8121 is fully supported and supplied with the 3L Diamond design environment that allows the user to easily and efficiently implement algorithms on any of the available DSPs, FPGAs and PowerPCs. Hostside software interface to the PC is included and the solution is supported by TI’s Code Composer Studio. Available immediately from Sundance, the SMT8121 provides maximum flexibility and field upgradability to a range of FPGA and DSP parts. The SMT8121 maintains the legacy tradition of Sundance’s forward and backwards compatibility.

PRESS RELEASE

NEW IMAGE PROCESSING DEVELOPMENT PLATFORM EMPOWERS SYSTEM DESIGNERS

18/10/2006

London – England A new FPGA and DSP co-design platform for developing image processing equipment, the SMT339, has been launched by Sundance Multiprocessor Systems.

At the core of the new board are the lightning fast

Texas Instruments (TI) TMS320DM642 DSP-based digital media processor and Xilinx Virtex-4 FX-60 FPGA. TI’s TMS320DM642 processor has been specially designed to optimise image processing performance with a stunning capability of 5760MIPS at a clock rate of 720MHz. The Xilinx Virtex-4 FX-60 FPGA boasts 622Mbps to 10.3125Gbps serial transceivers for high-speed serial input/output.

The huge processing power of

the FPGA speeds functions such as colour space conversion (CSC) and discrete cosine transforms (DCT), while Fast Fourier Transforms (FFT) and convolution can be implemented without using any of the DSP’s resources. Boosting performance there is 16MB of fast ZBTRAM and 128MB DSP SDRAM. "Sundance DSP is a valued partner of Xilinx and have a strong track record of delivering high performance development platforms.

The SMT339 seems well

positioned to complement the portfolio with a platform that demonstrates the dramatic performance boost that FPGAs bring to a co-processing environment," enthused, Mark Oliver, marketing manager multimedia video and imaging, of Xilinx’s DSP division. Image processing is an essential part of everyday life.

At home, HD TV,

interactive gaming and media streaming is now common. In hospital, scanning equipment is delivering instant and more accurate images for doctors.

In

industry, simulators of all kinds enable complex and often hazardous tasks to be practiced in artificially created worlds.

Security systems from iris scanning to

automatic number plate recognition all depend on image capture, processing and interpretation.

Many applications also rely on the ability to achieve high data

compression rates specified by H.264 and MPEG-4, the natural replacement for the overworked MPEG-2 standard. “In designing the SMT339, we have listened carefully to our customers: system engineers, researchers and scientists interested in imaging systems and optics – working

PRESS RELEASE 01/10/2007

Floating Point FFT IP-Core Lands on Scalable Video Platform from Sundance London – England - 01/10/2007 The

new

Digital

Video

Infrastructure

Platform

(DVIP) from Sundance features from three to eleven fixed-point DSPs, equating to as much as 50000 MIPS (millions instructions per second). Where that is still not sufficient floating-point calculation power for the most demanding real-life application, the DVIP gets a helping hand from closelycoupled Xilinx® Virtex™-4 FX60 FPGAs. The FC100 Floating-point FFT IP-Core implemented in the FPGA is designed using a radix-32 architecture to make it flexible, portable, and use as few external memory resources as possible.

Even then it’s possible to re-

configure its complex data range from 256-point to 1M-point on-the-fly. It is ideally

suited

to

Encoding/Decoding systems. A single IP-Core will process 42 frames of a Video 2D transform each second on single 1024x1024 images and that will take less than 1/2 of the 128 XtremeDSP™ Slices available on a Virtex-4 FX60. The DVIP has three of these FPGAs as standard and up to four more FPGAs can be added. The easiest way to visualize the power of combined fixed-point DSP and an FPGA enabled with the FC100 is a trip down memory lane, as Flemming Christensen, CTO of Sundance Multiprocessor Technology Ltd observes: “I can vividly remember when I was given an Intel 8087 math coprocessor in the early ‘80s to increase the performance of my Workstation PC. It was awesome. The 8087 could do 50000 FLOPS (floating point operations per second) whereas the DVIP can offer 50000 Mega FLOPS and still costs less than my old PC.” The FC100 is available in either VHDL source format or can be supplied as a ‘task’ to integrate into the Xilinx’ “System Generator for DSP” or The MathWork’s “Simulink” tools. It has been verified to the IEEE-754 standard and comes with full simulation and implementation support. A bit-true model for performance evaluation is provided free of charge for evaluation purpose. “Sundance has done an exceptional job integrating high performance DSP functions with Xilinx’ FPGAs. or

High-

Resolution Image Processing for Medical applications. Such video processing applications have become a perfect target for manufacturers like Xilinx who make re-configurable devices (FPGAs). The smallest of the family of DVIPs has no less than three Xilinx Virtex-4 FX60 FPGAs and sports in the region of 15 million spare gates for users to program with their own algorithms. The biggest issue in using these devices was the lack of suitable tools that were designed for software scientists, and not hardware engineers. Another issue was simulation and portability. Simulink HDL Coder and The MathWorks Model-Based Design tools have removed those barriers.

They have also been incorporated to into 3L’s

Diamond suite of multiprocessor tools, allowing ‘Tasks’ to be placed on combinations of DSPs and FPGAs. “Now, engineers can implement Digital Video applications on the Sundance FPGA/DSP using Simulink Models,” says Ken Karnofsky, marketing director, signal processing and communications, at The MathWorks and continues “The DVIP simplifies hardware implementation by providing a platform that combines Texas Instruments DSPs and Xilinx FPGA processing.” “Our customers have struggled for years with getting FPGAs to be really useful as a processing machine”, says Emmanuel Puillet, FPGA Manager of Sundance Multiprocessor Technology Ltd. “Simulink HDL-Coder combined with DVIP will make porting applications much more predictable as our customers would have simulated and verified the processing using The MathWorks tools before targeting our hardware”

The ‘glue-middleware’ that combines Sundance’s hardware and The MathWorks tools is developed by the long-established Scottish company 3L Ltd. and Hendri Veldman, Software Director, 3L Ltd said: “It took one dedicated FPGA firmware engineers less than 2 days to learn all about The MathWorks’s tools and within the following day we had Simulink HDL-Coder generating applications running on Sundance’s hardware using Diamond FPGA. It was impressive” The DVIP is available now from a starting price of USD25000.00 in single quantities with OEM prices on request. Develop Imaging Systems with the Right Mix of Technology You can harness the combined strengths of DSPs and FPGAs to create a powerful imaging system.

by Justin Wheatley Systems Manager Sundance Multiprocessor Technology Limited justin.wheatley@sundance.com Imaging applications demand quite a range of processes to be performed in a single application. Although you can use multiple DSPs to provide more power and design nearly any function in a large enough FPGA, this is not usually the easiest, cheapest, or most efficient approach. High-level imaging algorithms like object recognition are best suited to the agility of a modern image processing DSP, while FFTs, edge enhancement, or MPEG-4 encoding would be better left to the vast parallel power of a large highspeed FPGA. The obvious answer is to mix the two technologies (as discussed in the article, “The Benefits of FPGA Coprocessing,” from the Third Quarter 2006 issue of the Xcell Journal), but DSP and FPGA designs are quite disparate disciplines, involving very different techniques, skills, tools, and usually people. These differences create obstacles to a fluid codesign process. Thus, the idea of using both technologies together can prove rather unpalatable to a specialist in one of the two fields – and even more so to an expert of neither. Integrating the hardware itself also presents a significant amount of work that you could avoid if you stuck with just one technology. 38

A Tough Act – To Follow Figure 2 shows how the image data flows through the hardware resources when configured for our person-tracking imaging system. Video is captured by the video decoder and fed to the FPGA. The decoder can handle a variety of different input formats from PAL/NTSC CVBS or separate YC. Alternatively, you can input digital video through a daughtercard digital interface module.

SLB Interface

Performance Awaits Your Command Figure 1 illustrates the hardware. The Texas Instruments Module (TIM) form-factor SMT339 is mounted on a carrier that might be PCI, PCI-X, VME, CompactPCI, or even stand-alone. The carrier provides a home and power to the module and usually an interface to a host computer. A variety of analog video formats can be connected to the system through its video decoder. Alternatively, a range of digital video sources may be connected to the appropriate I/O daughtercard. The input sources are routed to the FPGA, which is a 60,000-logic-cell Xilinx® Virtex™-4 FX60 device. The data can be preprocessed here before passing to the DSP. The FPGA has two independent 8-MB banks of ZBTRAM, which are ideal for frame stores for the various pre- and post-processing functions performed on the FPGA. The DSP is a Texas Instruments TMS320DM642 video digital signal processor. You can program it using Texas Instruments’s Code Composer Studio, which is fully software-compatible with the C64x DSP range. Clocked at 720 MHz, it is capable of 5.76 GMACs per second and is linked to the FPGA by three bidirectional video ports, with more ports for control and other data. All of the illustrated interconnections are already implemented in the FPGA, leaving you free to implement the specific functions required for your application. The DSP also comes with 128 MB of fast SDRAM. This 64-bit-wide memory holds the image buffers for the DSP and program/data space. There is an output from the FPGA to a video encoder so that a live image (raw,

part, or fully processed) can be displayed directly on a monitor – which is particularly useful when developing algorithms. Digital output may be obtained from the appropriate I/O daughtercard attached to the Sundance LVDS bus (SLB) interface or from high-speed serial links: connectivity to and from other modules is provided by 16 Xilinx RocketIO™ channels in the form of four Sundance rocket serial links (RSLs), giving the system significant expandability.

In this article, I’ll review the SMT339 from Sundance, a powerful, off-the-shelf development system for imaging solutions created to help design teams realize competent imaging applications in a small, flexible, and highly expandable unit. A typical imaging function, such as a tracking system that highlights any person moving in a video image, suitably illustrates the features of the SMT339.

The FPGA pre-processes the incoming video stream using one of the ZBTRAM banks as an image buffer. A slow-moving reference image is maintained by iterating each pixel by one bit per frame towards its value on the current image. The current image is compared with the reference image to calculate a difference image. A great feature of this system, with its large and powerful FPGA, is that it is very easy to experiment with different preprocessors – like spatial filters, edgeenhancement filters, or histogram functions – and see the results immediately on the system’s live output. The calculated difference image, together with the current image, is passed to the DSP for analysis. The DSP performs a detection algorithm on the difference image, extracting the silhouette and looking for the characteristic shape of a person in the moving parts of the image. Various properties of a person detected in the field of view can then be calculated from this, such as: • The coordinates of the corners of a region of interest around the person • The center point (calculated as the mid-point of the region’s corners) • Their center of gravity (based on the center of the area of their silhouette)

• The coordinates of their entire outline (possibly returned in a binary overlay image of the scene) The FPGA then post-processes this information, recombining it with the source image. For example, you could overlay an outline around the person, change their color, or perform other manipulations. The results of the calculations are then available on a live video output (as shown in Figure 3), but they may also be output through the daughtercard or through other interfaces for transfer to, logging, or display on digital video systems. The Software Supporting Role This all sounds great in principle, but any DSP engineer is sure to wonder what sorcery would be required to realize such a cooperative combination in practice. Fortunately, the SMT339 (as with Sundance’s many other modules) is supported by a comprehensive environment of development tools conceived to address this very problem. Besides the many VHDL cores and DSP library modules available, a coherent software model is necessary to simplify the overall application development for these mixed-processor systems. Diamond from 3L Limited provides this model by

Figure 3 – The Sundance SMT339 in a simple system

describing multiprocessor systems as a number of independent tasks that communicate over channels. Whether these tasks are executing on DSPs or FPGAs, Diamond manages the interconnections and programming so that you can concentrate on their application. Diamond uses the FPGAs on Sundance DSP TIMs by automatically adding the engineer’s tasks to the standard Sundance firmware. These tasks are created in VHDL or tools such as Xilinx System Generator, or they can be standard netlist files, allowing you to bring proprietary cores into the system and mix them with standard and user-developed cores. Diamond automatically adds the logic to allow the tasks to communicate with other tasks; it then builds an FPGA bitstream using the standard Xilinx tools. This technique creates a hardware independence that allows you to make major changes to the underlying hardware without having to change any code. It is now possible to expand the hardware by adding DSPs or FPGAs as required, without so much as a recompilation. Repositioning a task on a different DSP reduces to only a tiny change in a single text file. Thus, when more processing power becomes necessary, you can add it at will, and none of the existing development is made redundant. Even if a task needs to be moved from a DSP to an FPGA for acceleration, the surrounding functions are not affected. Conclusion The subtle art of combining the respective strengths of FPGAs and DSPs can be simplified by starting with a scalable system whose delicate integration is already complete. Supported by a comprehensive software environment, such complex hardware can become both adaptable and accessible, allowing its collective power to be finely tuned to the desired application. After the solution is developed, with such a modular approach, you can then create a production system efficiently from offthe-shelf modules. HD Digital Video, Telecom and IP OEMs to Benefit from New Scaleable Twin DSP and FPGA Based Development System

06/11/2006

London – England It is often said ‘two heads are better than one’ when it comes to solving problems. The new SMT362 from Sundance Multiprocessor Technology takes this to heart. At its core are not one but two Texas Instruments TMS320C6455 DSPs and the long awaited Xilinx Virtex-4 FX60 FPGA. A scaleable, modular TIM design, with a huge range of connectivity options, makes the SMT362 the ideal development platform for original equipment manufacturers to design and deliver the next generation of HD based video infrastructure, telecom and IP devices. With an operating frequency of 1GHz and 2MB on-chip level 2 cache each, the TMS320C6455 DSPs have the highest fixed-point processing power in the 'C6000 range. These, combined with the stunning Virtex-4 FPGA FX60, that boasts nearly 60,000 logic cells and 16 RocketIO serial transceivers, allow users of the SMT362 to gain breakthrough performance at the lowest cost. It never takes long for OEMs to explore the processing power limits of a new board. This is not a problem for the SMT362 – it is designed to scale-up the DSP and FPGA capability by simply connecting with additional SMT362s or other TIMs. Massive raw processing power on tap combined with an almost limitless ability to scale-up, are compelling reasons for OEMs to use the SMT362 as a more productive alternative to ASICs and ASSPs. However, Sundance did not stop there; they have integrated 256MB of DDR2-500 SDRAM for each of the DSPs giving developers an even greater ability to implement complex DSP tasks. DSP engineers developing the telecoms backbone to meet growing expectations and demand will benefit from the increased capacity and productivity the SMT362 has to offer. So too will the developers of equipment for heavy users of integrated audio/video in teleconferencing, high definition imaging in the medical world, HDTV broadcasting and so on – the very applications that place great demand on the telecommunications infrastructure. Achieving ‘fast time to market’ is all important in the highly competitive and fast paced telecoms, broadcast and IP product arena. By taking care of the highspeed digital video hardware, Sundance have allowed designers to concentrate on

implementing their own algorithms using the two powerful DSPs and the cuttingedge FPGA. Comprehensive software tools are provided to make algorithm implementation easy so OEMs can quick-start their development of advanced video infrastructures, HDTV, IP and telecoms technology. Software includes TI’s Code Composer Studio Integrated Development Environment (IDE) and 3L's Diamond FPGA. “When Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in 1876 and Edison the Kinetoscope in 1891, they could never have envisaged how the technologies would merge to become the audio visual experience without wires possible today. However, I am sure if they were with us now, they would love to have a piece of kit like the SMT362 to bring their applications alive in double-quick time,” commented Sebastien Maury, DSP system analyst with Sundance Multiprocessor Technology. The SMT362 is the ideal DSP and FPGA platform for developers of digital video products and follows hot on the heels of the SMT339, its analogue-video cousin, launched just a few weeks before. wireless infrastructure applications, making it an ideal component in Sundance’s SMT8096 platform. The SMT350 module in the platform uses two TI ADS5500 14-bit, 25MSPS analogue-to-digital converters, designed for applications demanding low power consumption, the highest speed and highest dynamic performance in a very small space.

The TI analogue-to-digital

converters are then complemented by a Xilinx FPGA and a TI DAC5686 dual 16bit, 500MSPS digital-to-analogue converter, which provides three modes of operation: dual-channel, single-sideband and quadrature modulation. At the software level, developers can custom code their systems to reconfigure the flexible hardware. The system’s SMT310Q PCI carrier was specifically developed to provide access to a TI Module over the PCI bus running at 33 MHz with a 32-bit data bus. Because of the onboard XDS510 compatible JTAG controller, developers can use TI's Code Composer Studio™ integrated development environment and 3L Diamond software development environments to easily complete code generation, debugging and uploading. For more demanding SDR applications, the SMT145 carrier with 64 bits data and 66 MHz PCI interface could be used, while a carrier like the SMT148 can be chosen in support of an embedded system. With the modular approach adopted by Sundance, multi-DSP power could be easily harnessed to provide greater number crunching capability when needed, and Sundance provides software to demonstrate these potential capabilities. Traditional system software development “coding” can be circumvented through the use of MathWorks Simulink, which is fully compatible with the SMT8096. The kit supports Windows® , QNX and Linux environments. “This sophisticated SDR development platform, based on MathWorks MATLAB and Simulink for Model-Based Design and a powerful TI-based DSP chip by Sundance, is an exciting development that MathWorks encourages in the market place," said Amnon Gai, partner marketing manager at the MathWorks. Pricing and Availability The SMT8096 is available now at the single unit price of $8395 (US dollars). Delivery time is between two and four weeks from the purchase order. For purchasing please write to sales@sundance.com or phone (775) 827-3103. ### About Sundance Sundance designs, develops, manufactures and markets high performance signal processing and reconfigurable systems for original equipment manufacturers in the wireless and signal processing markets. Sundance Unveils Floating-Point Library for TI Fixed-Point TMS320™ DSP Family

Mar 28, 2005 Contact: Flemming Christensen Flemming.C@Sundance.com

RENO, NEVADA (March 28, 2005) – Sundance Digital Processing Inc,, a worldwide supplier and manufacturer of advanced digital signal processing (DSP) and reconfigurable computing platforms, today announced the availability of the GDD600, a new and powerful library of floating-point DSP vectors and functions. Offering a broad range of callable functions, the GDD600 library significantly reduces the development time of many DSP applications targeting Texas Instruments' (TI) TMS320 DSP-based platforms. In addition to the hand-coded and optimized functions, the GDD600 includes a data conversion unit that facilitates the conversion of fixed-point and integer formats into floating-point units, as well as the conversion of floating-point units into integer formats. “Encompassing over one hundred different functions and transforms, the GDD600 is remarkably beneficial for DSP applications written in either Ccode or variants of C-code, enabling programmers to encode DSP and image-processing algorithms in an efficient and timely manner,” said Thomas Brooks, C6000 product marketing manager, TI. With the ability to interchange between a fixed-point and a floating-point DSP processor, the GDD600 is a very helpful tool in the development of DSP real-time applications based on a variety of TI floating and fixed-point processors such as the TMS320C64x™ and TMS320C67x™ DSP generations. "DSP applications are often coded modularly, which means the applications are divided into functions that are then called from the application. Most major DSP vendors have spent considerable time developing compilers that streamline these application developments," said Flemming Christensen, general manager, Sundance. "By providing application designers with the powerful GDD600 library of pre-optimized DSP functions, Sundance makes it possible for DSP programmers to maximize the benefits offered by compilers while reducing and simplifying application developments." The GDD600 library comprises over 100 functions and macros that perform common DSP operations like Fast Fourier Transform, Fast Hartley Transform, Discrete Cosine Transform, FIR/IIR filters, coordinate transformations, vector operations, complex number arithmetic operations, pseudo-random numbers generation and data conditioning (spectral windows) operations. These operations are executed on the IEEE-754 floating-point format numbers, which are then implemented on a larger dynamic range that uniformly distributes relative errors, making it unnecessary for developers to scale accumulators, a common practice for fixed-point arithmetic.

The hand-coded and optimized library includes various features such as interruptibility, which is essential for programming asynchronous systems. The GDD600 also has the ability for re-entrance, thus enabling the same code to be shared between tasks and threads. This makes the code useable in multitasking systems. Fast and accurate floating-point math simulation routines also allow the user to benefit from a faster processing floating-point array and scalar data. Pricing for the GDD600 starts at $5,500. Original equipment manufacturers and embedded system designers can give their digital signal processing projects a jump-start thanks to the innovative Sundance SMTPC range of optimised PCs. Sundance Multiprocessor Technology is an internationally renowned supplier of high-performance processor and I/O modules for use in single and multiprocessor DSP equipment. Their equipment is found in demanding applications including imaging, sonar, simulation and industrial control. A range of PCs customised to bring the best out of this world-class technology was seen as essential. “Powerful DSP systems demand robust power supplies, adequate cooling, and space for all the hardware. Off-the-shelf PCs are rarely up to the job. Ordering our cutting-edge DSP hardware with a PC built for the job avoids any risks and saves projects leaders valuable time by providing configured, tested and ready to run systems,” explained Flemming Christensen, Sundance managing director. The SMTPC range of optimised PCs is available in desktop, tower and standard portable platforms depending on need and user preference. Build quality is exceptional and there is even a ruggedised portable version for heavy-duty use in harsh environments. All share the same integration with Sundance’s hardware and are delivered configured to customer order requirements. Though customised for best performance of DSP applications, the PCs are based on well-specified components throughout. They include Intel processors, DDR2400 RAM, S-ATA hard disks, DVD read/writers and come complete with Microsoft Windows XP Professional. Added features include more robust power supplies to ensure stable operation with power hungry processing systems. Multi-fan flow through cooling prevents overheating while a front panel two-channel LCD temperature display with two internal probes gives a visual assurance that all is running well. To help users start their DSP projects immediately, all Sundance hardware and software is preinstalled to guarantee a hundred percent compatibility. This allows the company to provide whole system support.
