FESTIVAL GUIDE

The O2, 25-27 April

Welcome

WELCOME FROM ROBERT REDFORD

WELCOME FROM SUNDANCE INSTITUTE

It is our pleasure to bring the best of Sundance to London again this year and we welcome the opportunity to share independent stories and voices with audiences at The O2. Sundance has always been – and always will be – about the individual artists whose works inspire a fresh perspective on the world, or a new approach to the inevitable ups and downs of life. I hope this is what you will find at Sundance London, and I thank you for joining us.

Thank you for joining us for Sundance London 2014! We are so happy to be here and to share a program that is rich with creativity, originality, and new voices. Centered around the latest work by filmmakers and musicians from both sides of the pond, Sundance London also presents panel discussions and events that explore and celebrate the craft of independent storytelling.

Have fun.

Sundance London is one of the many programs offered by Sundance Institute, a non profit organization founded by Robert Redford in 1981. Driven by a mission to discover and serve independent artists and audiences, the Institute has provided creative, financial, and strategic support to thousands of filmmakers and theatre artists in the U.S. and around the world. We have introduced audiences to the best American independent film though our annual Sundance Film Festival, Next Fest, Film Forward, and of course, through Sundance London. The Institute is active year-round and around the world and we invite you to join our community of people who value and champion artistic freedom and innovation.

ROBERT REDFORD President & Founder Sundance Institute

We would like to thank our co-hosts for this event, The O2 and Sundance Enterprises, as well as our colleagues at BAFTA, BFI, BFI NET.WORK, The BRITDOC Foundation, Film London and Sheffield DocFest for joining us as collaborators and for welcoming us to London. And most of all, we thank you for attending. Whether you join us for a single film or for the entire weekend, we hope you will be inspired by what you experience here.

WELCOME FROM THE O2 Hello and welcome to the third Sundance London. I am delighted to welcome back one of the film industry’s most prestigious events to The O2. It’s a huge privilege to host such a compelling array of films and music, which provides Londoners with access to some of the freshest talent around. As well as taking over Cineworld, Sundance London will also be hosting an exciting music programme in The O2’s newest venue, Brooklyn Bowl. Once again there is something for everyone interested in film and music at this year’s event. Impressively, 23 films will make their world, international, European or UK premieres here, while ten will be produced by females and seven by first time filmmakers. Complementing the film programme is an exciting music agenda that will include Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker, and former Orange Juice frontman Edwyn Collins on one of the music panel discussions, while the Festival Hub at Brooklyn Bowl will feature a number of live music performances. I am certain this is going to be the best Sundance London yet… Once again it has been a genuine pleasure to work with the Sundance Institute and I’d like to pay tribute to the teams on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as our fantastic volunteers, who have ensured that every facet of the festival is of the highest quality. I hope you enjoy what the team have put together for you this year and we look forward to seeing you again. Thanks for coming. Enjoy.

THE CASE AGAINST 8

FRIDAY 25 APRIL 9:15PM • SUNDAY 27 APRIL 12:15PM

SATURDAY 26 APRIL 5:30 PM • SUNDAY 27 APRIL 12:00 PM

Blue Ruin premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where it screened in the Directors’ Fortnight and went on to win the FIPRESCI International Critics Prize. Filmmaker Jeremy Saulnier attended the 2013 Sundance Film Festival as the cinematographer for Matthew Porterfield’s I Used to Be Darker, which screened in the NEXT program. A peaceful vagrant finds his quiet life upended by dreadful news and sets off for his childhood home to carry out an act of vengeance. Since he is only an amateur assassin, he winds up in a brutal fight to protect his estranged family. With his second feature film, writer/director Jeremy Saulnier creates a classic American revenge story, crackling with sudden violence and black humor. The film maintains an impressive edge-of-your-seat pace through the script’s surprising twists and turns and the efficient work of editor Julia Bloch. Beyond the thrills, Saulnier grounds the film’s humanity in the captivating eyes of lead actor Macon Blair, which never lose the burning intensity of righteous duty and overpowering fear.

Election Day 2008: Californians passed Proposition 8, a measure that repealed the right of same-sex couples to marry. This documentary takes us behind the scenes of the high-profile trial that overturned the controversial constitutional amendment. The case first made headlines with the shocking alliance of lead attorneys Ted Olson and David Boies, political foes who last faced off on opposing sides in Bush v. Gore. The plaintiffs are two loving gay couples who find their families at the center of the same-sex marriage controversy.

Directors: BEN COTNER RYAN WHITE

Filmmakers Ben Cotner and Ryan White gain unparalleled access to the key players in the controversy and provide fly-on-the-wall coverage of a trial the public was never allowed to see. Shot over five years, this extraordinary film offers unprecedented insight into the US system and the often mysterious process of taking a case to the Supreme Court. Chronicling one of America’s most significant civil rights battles, The Case Against 8 puts the viewer in the driver’s seat of history in the making. SATURDAY 26 APRIL 8:45 PM • SUNDAY 27 APRIL 2:30 PM

FRIDAY 25 APRIL 6:30 PM • SATURDAY 26 APRIL 5:45 PM • SUNDAY 27 APRIL 11:30 AM

On August 12, 1990, in the badlands of South Dakota, paleontologist Peter Larson and his team from the Black Hills Institute unearthed the largest, most complete Tyrannosaurus Rex ever found. It was the find of a lifetime – the world’s greatest dinosaur discovery. They named their dinosaur Sue. Two years later, when the FBI and the National Guard showed up, battle lines were drawn over ownership of Sue. The U.S. government, world-class museums, Native American tribes, and competing paleontologists became the Goliath to Larson’s David as he and his team fought to keep their dinosaur and wrestled with intimidation tactics that threatened their freedom as well.

Dinosaur 13 chronicles an unprecedented saga in American history and details the fierce battle to possess a 65-million-year-old treasure. With consummate skill, filmmaker Todd Miller excavates layer after layer, exposing human emotion in a dramatic tale that is as complex as it is fascinating.

Drunktown’s Finest is Sydney Freeland’s feature film debut and her response to a news story that characterized her hometown of Gallup, New Mexico, as “Drunktown, USA.” Nizhoni was adopted and raised as a Christian by a white family, transsexual Felixxia dreams of becoming a model, and Sickboy is headed to basic training so he can take care of his soon-to-be-born child. We observe the Navajo Nation from the inside out through the eyes of these three unlikely characters. At first our preconceptions are reinforced, but slowly, as each of their lives unfolds, we confront the reality of living in this community, and we see these three aspiring to leave their town behind. Shot against a mesmerizing New Mexico landscape, Drunktown’s Finest portrays such a strong underlying tradition of acceptance and family that we start to wonder whether the outside world these characters crave is truly the answer.

FRIDAY 25 APRIL 9:00 PM • SATURDAY 26 APRIL 2:15 PM • SUNDAY 27 APRIL 5:15 PM

FRIDAY 25 APRIL 6:30 PM • SUNDAY 27 APRIL 11:45 AM

No individual better embodies African music of the 1970s and ’80s – and its pivotal role in postcolonial political activism – than Fela Kuti. After taking his native Nigeria by storm, the pioneering musician’s confrontational Afrobeat sound spread throughout the continent and beyond, even as it made determined enemies of the repressive Nigerian military regime. As a result of continued persecution, increasingly unorthodox behavior and, eventually, complications due to HIV, Kuti’s final years saw his musical output and influence wane. Within the past decade, a resurgence of interest in his work has posthumously repopularized Kuti, culminating in the massively successful Broadway show FELA!, written by Jim Lewis and directed by Tony Award winner Bill T. Jones. Academy Award–winning director Alex Gibney interweaves the show’s skilful staging with period interviews and hypnotic performances to recapture the essence of the man, his music, and his enduring cultural and political relevance. In conjunction with the screening of this film, Sundance London is proud to feature a live music performance from one of the members of Fela Kuti’s band Egypt 80 - Dele Sosimo and his Afrobeat Orchestra. Frank is a comedy about a young wannabe musician, Jon, who discovers he’s bitten off more than he can chew when he joins a band of eccentric pop musicians led by the enigmatic Frank and his terrifying sidekick, Clara. Frank’s uniqueness lies in the fact that he makes music for the joy of creating… and because he wears a giant fake head. After a rocky start, Jon ingratiates himself with the band members but as his influence waxes, creative tensions mount, and the band’s entire raison d’être is called into question. Already a presence at the Cannes, Berlin, and Toronto film festivals, director Lenny Abrahamson makes his Sundance debut with a captivating offering featuring a phenomenal cast, as you’ve never seen them before. The ensemble creates lasting images and sounds for a film that playfully examines the nature of art and artists. Frank possesses such creative audacity and thought – provoking observations – propelled by a barrage of wit, performance and, of course, song – that you are bound to emerge feeling as if you have seen and heard something completely original.

Oscar Grant was a 22-year-old Bay Area resident who loved his friends, was generous to strangers, and had a hard time telling the truth to the mother of his beautiful daughter. He was scared and courageous and charming and raw, and as human as the community he was part of. That community paid attention to him, shouted on his behalf, and filmed him with their cell phones when Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Police officers, who were strong, intimidated, and acting in the way they thought they were supposed to behave around people like Oscar, shot him in cold blood at the Fruitvale subway stop on New Year’s Day in 2009. Director Ryan Coogler makes an extraordinary directorial debut with this soulful account of the real-life event that horrified the nation. Featuring radiant performances by Melonie Diaz and Michael B. Jordan as Grant, a young man whose eyes were an open window into his soul, Fruitvale offers a barometer reading on the state of humanity in American society today.

Hits is a comedy about a paranoid municipal worker named Dave, his The Voice-obsessed 19-year-old daughter, a wannabe teenage rapper who has an unrequited crush on the daughter, and their neighbors in a small, workingclass town in upstate New York. Dave finds fame when videos of his rants at City Hall go viral, and hordes of appallingly well-meaning hipsters from Brooklyn descend on their town to make sure Dave’s rights aren’t trampled by “the man.” A writer, comedian, and actor perhaps best known for his work on Mr. Show and Arrested Development, David Cross makes his directorial debut with a sharpwitted satire that pokes fun at the absurd nature of fame in the Internet age. Featuring an impressive collection of some of the funniest comedians around, Hits unabashedly skewers contemporary culture into a delicious shish kebab of laughs.

KUMIKO, THE TREASURE HUNTER FRIDAY 25 APRIL 6:15 PM • SATURDAY 26 APRIL 12:00 PM • SUNDAY 27 APRIL 8:30 PM Kumiko lives in a cramped apartment in Tokyo with her pet rabbit, Bunzo. She works as an office lady, robotically preparing tea for her nitpicky boss. But on her own time, she obsessively watches a well-known American film on a weathered VHS tape. Eventually she maps out where a briefcase of castaway loot is buried within the fictional film. Then, convinced that her destiny depends on finding the money, she heads to the US and the harsh Minnesota winter to search for it. Inspired by an urban legend about a Japanese woman who took a similar journey, filmmaker brothers David and Nathan Zellner tackle their most ambitious project to date. Their love for lonely eccentrics remains, and Rinko Kikuchi gives a fascinating performance as the introspective, withdrawn Kumiko, whose increasing discomfort in the world leads her to retreat ever further into isolation. Shot with breathtaking precision, the film soars to transcendence as it reveals the beauty in the quest for reality, even if that reality is just your own. Winner of the U. S. SATURDAY 26 APRIL 11:45 AM • SUNDAY 27 APRIL 8:15 PM

SUNDAY 26 APRIL 6:00 PM

When a mining disaster tears at the fabric of an Appalachian coal-mining town, the lives of three very different inhabitants become inexplicably tangled in a web of secrets. Amos Jenkins, the sole survivor of the tragedy, unwillingly becomes a focal point of the resulting investigation. As tensions rise over who to blame for the deadly mishap, the teenage son of a top executive at the coal mine goes missing. Diane, the boy’s mother, grows emotionally estranged from her husband, Bill, as they search in vain for their child. Turning to the local church for support, Diane not only finds a comforting friend in Amos but also meets one of her son’s classmates, Owen Briggs, whom she learns was present at the time of his disappearance. Director Sara Colangelo first appeared at the Sundance Film Festival in 2010 with her short film of the same name. In this feature-length expansion, she explores the intricacies of small-town social order to startling effect and illustrates how, in times of tragedy, we find solace in the unlikeliest of places.

Memento is a complex puzzle in which the outcome is known and the enjoyment comes from piecing together the steps leading up to it. Guy Pearce (Ravenous) unleashes a riveting performance as Leonard Shelby, a man driven by the relentless desire to revenge his wife’s brutal murder while battling a rare, untreatable form of memory loss. Although he can recall details of his life before the ‘accident’, he can’t remember what happened 15 minutes ago, where he is, where he’s going, or why. Writer/director Christopher Nolan develops an elaborate tale that challenge the viewers’ expectations. The audience knows only what Leonard can piece together from various photographs, charts, notes, and tattoos, which serve as his memory. The justice of Shelby’s actions remains a fascinating question up to the very last frame. Equally impressive are Carrie-Anne Moss and Joe Pantoliano as the two constants in Leonard’s life who add to the confusion with their equivocal actions. Sundance-discovered films ‘From the Collection’ are presented as a joint celebration of the 30th anniversary of Sundance Film Festival and 25 years of Empire Magazine.

A strange singer with God-given talent drifts through his adopted city of Memphis with its canopy of ancient oak trees, streets of shattered windows, and aura of burning spirituality. Surrounded by beautiful women, legendary musicians, a stone-cold hustler, a righteous preacher, and a wolf pack of kids, the sweet, yet unstable, performer avoids the recording studio, driven by his own form of self-discovery. His journey quickly drags him from love and happiness right to the edge of another dimension. Writer/director Tim Sutton crafts an impressionistic folktale framed around the enigmatic musician/poet Willis Earl Beal and the city of Memphis. Adding a new legend to the city’s rich history, Memphis is an elusive document of mythmaking and the sources that feed those myths. Similar to his first feature, Pavilion, Sutton blurs the lines between fiction and reality, taking the audience to a wholly contemporary dreamlike world, bolstered by Chris Dapkins’ sublime camera and a driving blues soundtrack by Beal.

Donna Stern is a 27-year-old Brooklyn comedian whose unapologetically lewd, warmhearted wit is pretty irresistible with audiences. When she gets heartlessly ‘dumped up with’ by her two-timing boyfriend, Donna plunges into some light stalking and heavy moping. Hitting a serious low point, she performs a dreary set of break-up vengeance and Holocaust jokes and drunkenly falls into bed with a nice young professional named Max – not remotely her type. A few weeks later, condoms be damned, she’s pregnant. Now Donna, incapable of telling anything but the naked truth when she’s on stage, will resort to any means to avoid telling Max the score. As her date with Planned Parenthood draws near, she must confront her doubts and fears like never before. It’s the unlikely, yet winning, combination of scatological humor, raw human honesty, and sweet romance that makes Obvious Child so much fun and so satisfying to watch. Jenny Slate’s wonderfully vulnerable performance keeps Donna’s journey real as she tentatively strips back her sarcastic armor and allows herself to trust – at least for now.

Reservoir Dogs is a gritty crime drama packing hard-boiled dialogue, brutal violence, taut suspense, and nervous humor into a gutsy depiction of a highstakes jewel heist gone awry. Writer/director Quentin Tarantino’s underworld story has six unacquainted professional criminals brought together by veteran thief Joe Cabot to execute an intricately planned diamond robbery. The heist runs into a police ambush, forcing a violent confrontation that leaves one thief bleeding profusely from a gunshot wound. The four surviving thieves regroup at an abandoned warehouse to await instructions. Uneasy speculation about a double-crosser amongst them agitates the wary criminals and provokes harrowing confrontations and fierce dissension. Reservoir Dogs is a furious nuclear reaction of violence and intrigue. Its ensemble cast unites the genre’s established legends with notable rising new talent. Tarantino’s eclectic and outrageous vision is best described as Jim Thompson meets Samuel Beckett – a fusion of pulp drama, black humor and the existentialist void.

Michael Winterbottom’s largely improvised 2010 film, The Trip, took comedians Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon – or semifictionalized versions thereof – on a restaurant tour around northern England. In this witty and incisive follow-up, Winterbottom reunites the pair for a new culinary road trip, retracing the steps of the Romantic poets’ grand tour of Italy and indulging in some sparkling banter and impersonation-offs. Rewhetting our palates from the earlier film, the characters enjoy mouthwatering meals in gorgeous settings from Liguria to Capri while riffing on subjects as varied as Batman’s vocal register, the artistic merits of “Jagged Little Pill,” and, of course, the virtue of sequels. Winterbottom trains his camera to capture the idyllic Italian landscape and the gastronomic treasures being prepared and consumed while keeping the film centered on the crackling chemistry between the two leads. The Trip to Italy effortlessly melds the brilliant comic interplay between Coogan and Brydon into quieter moments of self-reflection, letting audiences into their insightful ruminations on the nuances of friendship and the juggling of family and career. The result is a biting portrait of modern-day masculinity.

THE VOICES

FRIDAY 25 APRIL 7:00 PM • SATURDAY 26 APRIL 9:00 PM

Jerry is a seemingly normal man trying to succeed in his new job at the Milton Bathtub Factory. He lives in a normal apartment – the type you would expect from a young bachelor – with his dog, Bosco, and his cat, Mr. Whiskers. Yet something seems off. As the new guy at work, Jerry is asked to help plan the company picnic, and he meets Fiona, an attractive English girl from accounting. Jerry immediately takes a liking to Fiona and excitedly goes home to tell his pets about her. And surprisingly, they answer. But all this is just the beginning of an insanely bizarre and twisted tale.

The Voices deviously disorients the viewer by severely shifting tones throughout the film. Ryan Reynolds deftly handles the quirky role of Jerry and proves that, whether it be ‘buried’ in a box (as he was in the 2010 film of the same name) or speaking with animals, he doesn’t shy away from unconventional roles. Director Marjane Satrapi, who burst onto the international film scene with Persepolis, makes her Sundance Film Festival debut with an intoxicating trip into a deranged world that is sure to shock and delight.

Principal Cast: Ryan Reynolds Gemma Arterton Anna Kendrick Jacki Weaver

Launched with auspicious beginnings in 1997, Electric Daisy Carnival was first held in Los Angeles, much to the delight of its initial crowd of a few thousand electronic music fans. Since then, it has grown into a global phenomenon. Besides drawing the top talents in electronic and dance music today, EDC is also known for its full-scale carnival rides, over-the-top displays of pyrotechnics, and interactive art installations, not to mention its international community of rabid devotees – in 2013, nearly 350,000 revelers descended upon Las Vegas to experience what is now the world’s largest dancemusic festival. The acclaimed production duo of Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz bring this event to life in brilliant 3-D, going behind the scenes to show what it takes to stage one of the biggest parties in the known universe. They chronicle the unique journeys of individual attendees from all walks of life, all of whom share one common desire – to shed their inhibitions and immerse themselves in this judgment-free celebration of life and music.

WINTER'S BONE SUNDAY 27 APRIL 3:15 PM Deep in the Ozark Mountains, clans live by a code of conduct that no one dares defy – until an intrepid teenage girl has no other choice. When Ree Dolly’s crystal-meth-making father skips bail and goes missing, her family home is on the line. Unless she finds him, she and her young siblings and disabled mother face destitution. In a heroic quest, Ree traverses the county to confront her kin, break their silent collusion, and bring her father home. With thrilling tension, Winter’s Bone depicts an archetypal rite of passage from adolescence to adulthood. Only this time, the young warrior is a girl. As our heroine braves immoveable obstacles, she redefines the notion of family loyalty and, in the process, discovers her own power. The spare precision of Debra Granik’s direction is effortlessly profound. Stunningly genuine performances and exquisite visual details capture the textures and rhythms of a world where the mythic and the naturalistic intermingle. Sundance-discovered films ‘From the Collection’ are presented as a joint celebration of the 30th anniversary of Sundance Film Festival and 25 years of Empire Magazine.

Watching a shorts programme is an exhilarating cinematic journey rarely experienced outside of a film festival. With many award winners, these programmes feature a diverse selection of films that played at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and that exemplify the uncompromised creativity at work in the short form.

SHORTS WORKSHOP: LONDON SATURDAY 26 APRIL 12:30 PM – 6:00 PM

Recognising the important role shorts have in cinema, storytelling, and culture, Sundance Institute presents Shorts Workshop: London to help empower the next generation of artists. Made a short film or just starting out, this Saturday seminar of Sundanceorganised panels and discussions will offer first-hand advice, insight, and access into the world of story development, production, working with cast and crew, and will help you to get the most out of making and presenting your short film. Experienced filmmakers will talk on stage about the finer points of their craft – how to work with characters and dialogue in a script; how to work with cinematographers, editors and all crew to create a healthy and collaborative experience; working with actors to give what they need to embody the film on screen; and going from working in shorts to various career opportunities. Short Film Programmers from the Sundance Film Festival will discuss how the festival works and how to navigate the festival world at large. GUTS TO GLORY: HOW DO YOU FIND YOUR STORY? SATURDAY 26 APRIL 3:30 PM With case studies from script to screen, this in-depth panel will get down and dirty about the often bumpy ride that it takes to realize your dream of getting your film made. From the spark of an idea, to typing the words FADE IN, to your world premiere at a major festival, filmmakers share stories from the trenches on how they navigated the obstacles, faced the challenges, compromised when they had to, and ultimately beat the odds. Are you ready for the true story? This is a panel for anyone who has made a film (or dreams of making a film) or anyone who just wants to know the real deal.

As well as great films and gigs, Sundance London presents a number of lively panel discussions with luminaries from both sides of the pond.

DOCUMENTARY COLLIDE From last year’s Stories We Tell to the controversial The Act of Killing, the hybrid documentary is going from strength to conventionbusting strength. But British documentary seems to be pushing the boundaries even further in challenging the genres of music, biography, and archive film. Why is this and what does it tell us about the role of artists and musicians in documentary filmmaking?

Dele Sosimi is a rhythm keyboard player who performed with Nigerian Afrobeat creator Fela Kuti and his band Egypt 80 from 1979-1986, and later formed Positive Force with Fela’s son Femi Kuti. Now based in London and playing with his own Afrobeat Orchestra, expect nothing but the funkiest rhythm guitars, fiery percussion, call and response vocals, and blazing horns – faithful to the original blueprint, but also clearly bearing Dele’s own DNA. Dele has performed worldwide, including at London’s Jazz Café and South Bank, Joe Zawinuls’ The Birdland in Vienna, Montreux Jazz Festival, Womad, the Mostly Jazz Festival, and has also led a large contingent of Jazz Musicians in celebrating the musical legacy of Fela Kuti at the 2011 edition of the Copenhagen Jazz Festival. His bi-monthly sessions ‘Afrobeat Vibration’ have also grown to be London’s top underground event, featuring Fela classics and original tracks from the albums Identity and Turbulent Times and the fresh single ‘T.M.I.’ This performance is being presented in conjunction with the Sundance London screening of Finding Fela, which documents the story of Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s life, music, and the political importance of the Afrobeat musical movement and its use as a political forum to oppose the Nigerian dictatorship and advocate for the rights of oppressed people. #SundanceLondon
