Creativity comes to

life…

Step into the elegant and spacious surroundings of ‘Kalamkaar,’ the furnishing showroom based in Lahore, and experience aesthetically well-defined furniture.

B

elieving in the philosophy of, ‘Kalamkaar, Furniture as Art,’ a team of dedicated workers have locally designed furniture which is a reflection of Pakistani values and traditions and also takes it influences from the major civilisations of the world. The designer who is responsible for creating this furniture empire is Qais Rehman. Under the dynamic leadership of Qais Rehman the CEO of Kalamkaar furnishers and textiles, the team has popularised the theme of ‘Made in Pakistan, ‘at home and abroad and made it a brand which is known to the clientele for its uniqueness, diversity and extraordinary craftsmanship. While talking to SUNDAY PLUS, QAIS REHMAN talks about his vision of making Kalamkaar a brand of international standards and efforts to maintain an industry, which can contribute economically and creatively to the development of the country. S+: You have been in the industry since 20 years. How has been the journey? Qais Rehman: Recently, Kalamkaarcelebrated its 20th Anniversary and it has been an interesting ride. I remember

we started from a small level and now we have showrooms across Pakistan and abroad. We have showrooms in Dubai, Karachi, Lahore, Los Angeles, New Jersey, Toronto, UK, Italy and Croatia. Also, we are exporting to African, Asian and European countries. S+: Tell us about the plantation project? Qais Rehman: After coming into the furniture field, we have realised the importance of trees in the conservation of our environment. We have started a small programme which is providing mini trees to the people and up till now we have distributed one lac trees locally. S+: Tell us about your furnishing project in Turkey… Qais Rehman:This was a joint project between a British interior designer and Kalamkaar and the location was a beach resort in Ankara, Turkey. We did the interior in collaboration with the British designer and it proved it be an exciting experience. Also we are involved in numerous home décor projects of Pakistan. S+: Your memorable projects… Qais Rehman: There are so many… However, I have enjoyed working on

residential ones. S+: Can you recall how or why you became a designer? Qais Rehman: It all started in 1991 when my friends and I opened a garage with an aim to promote ‘Made in Pakistan’ concept on revolutionary basis. We set our manufacturing unit in Lahore and started selling furniture in Karachi. At that time, the idea was to introduce the crafts of Lahore in Karachi and internationally also. Today we have showrooms in all the major parts of the world and we are getting better day by day. Initially, I started designing fabrics with my sister but my interest has always been in furniture designing which has a great potential to produce great returns economically and creatively. S+: What were the challenges did you face when you started? Qais Rehman: We had our share of ups and downs. I remember we started from Karachi, so operationally

22 Sunday Plus January 29, 2012

it was very challenging. Also we had technical issues in project designing and development. Overall, it has been a smooth journey and we have a successful clientele. S+: What is your philosophy behind ‘Kalamkaar’? Qais Rehman: A designing based on local craft but making it more contemporary. S+: Did you take any particular training in this regard and did you have an inspirational teacher? Qais Rehman: I didn’t take any formal training in this regard but always had this knack of ‘creating something.’ When I entered the field, I learnt the art of furnishing from the scratch and the rest is history. Also my sister was a pioneering designer and it was her guidance which has helped me in this venture. S+: What would you say are your main influences when designing a piece? Qais Rehman: Our inspirations are diverse and drawn from our surround-

ings, and rich cultural history of Pakistan. Also we have a small workshop where we keep on designing new things with local materials and crafts. Kalamkaar, reflects ethnic diversity of Pakistan beginning from Lahore, Hala, Multan and Harappa civilisations etc. Rich in history with an array of diverse arts and crafts our designers have always felt the potential this enormous resource offered. Also we felt the great skills of local craftsman and what they could achieve with proper design guidance and creativity can create a piece which is a true reflection of ‘Kalamkaar.’ S+: What comes first; the materials or the design idea? Qais Rehman: There is no rule. It keeps changing all the time. S+: How do you choose your materials (selection of wood etc.) and the making process? Qais Rehman:We have to be very careful with the material and need to have a seasoned wood because a lot of our production is exported. Mainly, we use rose wood and rely on handwork in the making process. We use simple

material and low technology for the creation of something beautiful and this has given us edge in the market. S+: Which part of the process excites you the most? Qais Rehman: It is always exciting to see the outcome of your efforts in the form of ‘complete product’ whereas the experimental stage of the product also offers exhilarating prospects. Qais Rehman: Our innovative and distinctive designs have made it a renowned brand internationally.

Qais Rehman: I can’t predict as they keep on changing rapidly. S+: How has the Pakistani furniture industry has changed in the last 50 years? Qais Rehman: It is a small industry but a vibrant one, lot of people are working on different ideas. S+: Have your practices changed to keep up with new technologies? Qais Rehman: No, we are still following the old methods of working. S+: What are the benefits of becoming a furniture artist? Chester Bernard:

E

Up &Rising

stablished in 2003, Chester Bernard is a shirt company that boasts of the largest collection of shirts in Pakistan under one roof. It began with a simple vision; to manufacture the most luxurious shirts, hand-crafted to perfection. In 2005, the Chester Bernard flagship store opened on Zamzama Boulevard in Karachi and recently opened its second store on M.M. Alam Road in Lahore. Chester Bernard exhibits all the characteristics of perfect craftsmanship and quality, providing luxury that lasts a lifetime. The Chester Bernard Brand exemplifies passion for design. Every element, every detail can become a work of art. There is an incredible allure hidden in the small details of the shirts and this one of a kind item pays homage to the world of art. Faraz Salehjee and Taimur Khan, founders, tell us about their brand.

1. How long have u been in the industry? April 2005 onwards till date.

2. Did you always know this is what you

wanted to do? No, not at all! I’ve always been drawn towards items which are unique in conception, design and finish. This happened by pure chance; an opportunity knocked and I held it by its horns. And that was the first day Chester Bernard had the opportunity of coming into my life.

3. How easy/hard has it been breaking into

Faraz Salehjee Taimur Khan

the industry? What are some of the problems/ hurdles you’ve faced? Other than the initial capital investment, it wasn’t hard at all! I was very fortunate. The genre of clothing we do doesn’t have a lot of competition, so at the time we began we were the first choice in men’s contemporary shirts. Once the market realised the depth of our creativity and consistency of our quality, we have never looked back. We have grown purely, by word of mouth! This form of advertising was slowrather than other conventional forms of advertising and therefore took us longer to achieve the market penetration we wanted.

4. Do you feel the industry welcomes new

comers? The industry is quick on the uptake of quality- if you have quality, you’re accepted instantaneously!

5. What inspired you to take the leap and join

the industry? I took the leap because our brand wassure to offer what was available in the market. It is difficult to attain creativity and quality simultaneously. It is only a pedigree brand which can do this. That’s why we celebrate the laurels which we have earned till date.

6. What advice would you give to others trying

Hold exhibitions, keep on holding them till the market dictates that you open a store of your own. Treat your consumers well, kill the competition and motivate, motivate, and motivate.

7. What styles/themes do you work with the

most? My style has always been contemporary and I’ve always been way ahead as far as fashion trends and themes are concerned. We have been consistent with this approach for the last few years.

8. Do you have a particular style or do you

prefer experimenting with everything? I prefer experimenting. Our style is constant with change. People always know that we will offer them something new in each quarter.

9. Who do you look up to in the industry?

Look up to I don’t know! However I do appreciate every one in this industry. Each designer has in his or her own way added to the dynamics of this industry and they must be appreciated for it!

10. Looking back, do you wish you had done

anything different when it comes to your career? No! There is not a single thing that I would do different. I have loved every bit of every day and every stitch of every shirt which has been produced by Chester Bernard.

11. What comes next?

Both, product and network expansion.

12. What are your hopes from 2012?

Designers should understand that quality has to match creativity for the longevity of their brands.

13. What is in for 2012?

The world is becoming bolder and more distinctive. So we are also becoming more creative.

What our music industry? All is not well with the music industry of Pakistan. Year 2011 was year of decline for the music industry.

F

For years I see it going down and down. I have not listened to one great song coming from Pakistan. By this I mean a song that was created in Pakistan and marketed here as well. This is something that points out the difficult state that art and especially the music is these days. In the near future I do not think there is anything coming up that could boost Pakistani music in a big way. The film industry has already gone down. Film Bol was released in a big way but even then the music of that film could not create big waves. It was the last Pakistani music aired and promoted in a big way. But none of the songs were hits. Apart from that Coke Studio as a brand has created a niche. It was a

very good effort. But as a musician and singer who has created 20 to 25 songs, which have been heard by a population of 180 million Pakistanis, I say even Coke Studio could not do anything for music in Pakistan. It did a lot for the brand image. Rather, I would say it was an advertising module for the media. In fact it was a replica of what was first created outside Pakistan in Europe. Apart from Jugni, Coke Studio was unable to produce a big song. I am a masses artiste and you should be counting the whole population of Pakistan. It was well received by urban population especially the youth. But I don’t see any song of Coke Studio being sung by a cyclist, street vendor or a farmer. What should be done? We need

huge back-up from sponsors as well as media channels. Industrialists who are indigenously Pakistani and made their fortunes in Pakistan should come into music and film making. Otherwise the downslide will continue. I have not released an album for eight years. My new album is almost complete. A few things are left that need to be polished. It was due to my commitments to other things. My interest in music has not faded away. But at the same time it has been reduced to some extent. When it comes to doing shows I am doing that all the year across the world and in Pakistan, when there is peace and space here. At the same time creating music has stopped in Pakistan, especially coming from mainstream artistes. They don’t see any opening here. Giving frequent airings and putting money behind marketing is not easy. They now demand a price for air time, which was not the case in past. There used to be three state enterprises, which were PTV, PTV World and NTM. All the

splus@nation.com.pk

blog

music that they used to air was free of cost. Now you have to buy time on the channel. Only sponsors have that kind of money, to air songs frequently. That is why a lot of major artistes have not released their works. The creativity is still there but they don’t find any avenue or outlet for the music they create. Only a few music channels are airing videos free of cost. These channels have

4 to 5 percent penetration in the masses. People in the age group of 25 to 40 don’t watch these channels. Only youth between 15 to 24 years watch these channels and they are mostly urban. So it is an urban phenomenon. That does not really give you any benefit in the real sense. Pakistani artistes like Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Atif Aslam and even some people from the band scene, have worked in India. They have come up with good music. It was a collaborative effort. I would still take it as Pakistani music because songs were sung by Pakistanis. There were three songs that were hits. First

one was from my movie ‘Virsa’ and sung by Rahat. Though I did not compose it, I as music director selected the song and it went on to become Rahat’s biggest hit ever. You can confirm it from the You Tube hits that it got. People are listening to Indian music. Rahat and Atif are successful in India but they have not released any album in Pakistan for some years. Albums have been released by Ali Zafar, Hadiqa and Rahim Shah. But name one album or song that has received accolades or been hit. My Ucchain Majajan Wali album sold 4.5 million copies in Pakistan alone. Now ask the companies releasing albums about the business. They would not even come to the one hundred thousand mark. Salman Ahmed has released an album. I wish him success. Everybody has the right to create and develop his music. I don’t think Junoon would be able to regroup again. I believe both Salman and Ali Azmat have created their niches in the market. None of us in the last few years has been able to create a big song. But at least our presence is there. Who is responsible for the situation? It is due to government’s policy towards the music and film industry. PTV has started marketing its air time like any other channel. It has also become commercial and does not have time for any

artiste to air their songs like they used to. To understand the situation let’s compare it with India. The Indian government supports artistes by putting a complete check on piracy. Their cable channels cannot air anything or advertise any product without permission. They have to get the rights. All the cable channels in Pakistan are advertising products, which officially they have no right to do. PEMRA has closed its eye to this fact. Cable channels as well as some other channels air all the Indian songs and films illegally. They are getting software for pennies. Therefore, they are not ready to invest anything in Pakistani music or film industry. It is piracy that is playing havoc with the Pakistan music industry. Internet is there, but its impact is on nearly 10 percent of population. When we talk about cable TV and TV channels we are talking about 60 percent population of Pakistan. Indian music being aired illegally is damaging the local music industry. To top it all if you take the media scenario in Pakistan biggest models and actors are the anchorpersons. Due to political turmoil the atmosphere is so charged up. It has become common to see politicians fighting each other in the talk shows at prime time, which elsewhere in the world is for entertainment programmes. This has led to further cut in the art scene in Pakistan.

My Hair is better than yours!

Sunday Plus January 29, 2012

‘Probably Lahore’s Best Kept Beauty Secret of the city’s finest socialites and most glamorous personalities’, Ruby Hasan, is one of Pakistan’s most travelled and professionally trained skin, hair & beauty experts. She is the founder of SPLITENDS-well regarded as Lahore’s premier beauty destination. She has achieved advanced qualifications & accreditations in hairdressing & coloring from TONI&GUY International, Vidal Sassoon, L’Oreal, Wella, & Schwarzkopf. From the globally acclaimed Morris School of Hairdressing to the prestigious Robert Fielding School of Hair Dressing in London, Ruby has trained under the legendary Charles Fox in skin and make-up at London Esthetique. Ruby is also Pakistan’s only qualified technician and CACI patented therapist trained from the CACI Institute which keeps Hollywood stars such Jennifer Lopez looking young and gorgeous. Ruby has also professionally received the Oxygen facial training, which is the beauty regime of some of the world’s most famous celebrities, including the Queen of Pop, Madonna. So Now that the “Cat is out of the Bag”, Catch Ruby’s weekly buzz on everything that is keeping you and the rest of the female species looking ‘OMG’ beautiful. More woman talk and care about hair loss in a single day, than the entire media and political parties put together on the subject of ‘NRO’ and ‘Memogate” “Why is it happening? What do I do? Must see a doctor” Hair Loss is not a democratic process! The panic that results from this usually gets directed towards either being resigned to fate and being miserable, or that wild instinct to try out anything. Hair does fall, it is a living protein, it has a growth pattern and a life cycle, so postshower hair fall, and the mass in the brush and the drain are probably ‘normal’. A single hair follicle grows its hair strand over a period of four to six years, then it rests for two to four months, after which it loses the old hair and a new hair grows and pushes it out. The new hair grows in at a rate of half an inch per month (approx.) At any given time, 10 percent of the hair is in the resting stage and 90 percent is in the first (growing/ healthy) stage. This is the natural process. A change in this process could be due to a variety of reasons. First you need to study if your hair is falling out from the root and if the quantity is alarming. Next you need to observe is if the hair fall is uniform and causing an overall thinning effect where the scalp is beginning to show; or if this is occurring in patches. A third condition is if the hair is falling due to breakage near the root or along the length. Fourth, and this is not hard and fast, is study your genetic inheritance. If hair is falling throughout the scalp, it’s obviously due to a change in the normal hair cycle. More hair enters the resting stage abnormally due to a shock to the body system. This shock to the body’s system can stress the hair follicle and causes a hair’s life to fall apart. This could be due to

many reasons. Constant pulling of the hair to either tie it up, braid or excessively blow drys may weaken the hair follicle and in some cases even damage it. But the hair loss due to this is mostly in the temple area and only in extreme cases. So what’s the solution? My first advice is don’t panic. Second is, make an appointment with a doctor and sort out the internal issues – the physical ones at least. These would include tests and a diagnosis that will identify the most likely causes for your hair loss. Rule out deeper medical issues like a thyroid problem, a serious deficiency, a medication that is causing this. Pop those vitamins, have iron and calcium in your diet, balance out the chemicals, nourish that root, and don’t let your state of mind come in to your hair. Available treatments in the professional arena: • Neudom Hair Oil - highly concentrated bio-treatment for baldness (androgenetic alopecia) and very popular with those experiencing natural thinning and wanting to preserve their tresses. • Nisim Hair loss shampoo, conditioner and hair scalp extract • L’Oreal Aminexil advanced - with omega-6 nutri complex which acts at the root to stimulate activity. Developed to fight against the hardening of collagen around the follicle and to favour hair growth at the root. • Revivogen - another natural product with revolutionary Scalp Therapy, Bio-Cleansing Shampoo, and Thickening Conditioner developed by dermatologists to target the root cause of hair loss and stimulate hair follicles. Till Next time, Stay Buzzed in!

is back Bill Clinton’s new book, Back to Work, is very moderate and not especially provocative. Only in a country, whose notionally conservative party has gone so far off the rails would anyone even have bothered to write it. The book presents an argument in favour of the role of government, limited but significant, in managing the country’s economic and social affairs. That the antithesis of this more or less self-evident thesis is not a straw man, but the actual professed philosophy of the modern-day Republican party, should give some idea of how distorted the current American political climate has become.

Title: Back to Work: Why We Need Smart Government for a Strong Economy | Author: Bill Clinton | No of Pages: 208 | Price: Rs. 1,850.00 | Genre: Current Affairs Sunday Plus January 29, 2012

ack to Work, despite its brevity, is really two books. The first section is a sort of forensic handbook for Democrats running for office, advice about how to wage a political campaign against Republican opposition. The second, much longer, section is a policy memorandum advocating a variety of trade, regulatory, energy and fiscal strategies. The first part, as one might expect, is shrewd and convincing. To say that Bill Clinton possesses superb political instincts is like saying that Paul McCartney has a good ear; he is probably the best natural politician of his generation. His skill at framing an argument is without peer and that he generally does so without demagoguery is to his lasting credit. In this case, the fact that he has simple common sense on his side doesn’t hurt either. These pages should be required reading for any Democrat running for office next year. Whether they would be of much interest to anyone not involved in the political game, however, is another question.

And the policy section? It is informed, high-minded, intelligent and persuasive. It is also, for any casual reader, deadly dull. Consider: “Denmark is an especially interesting case. The Danes generate almost 25% of their electricity from wind, have biomass (waste-burning) power plants, and high home efficiency standards, including triple-paned windows… [and so on and on].” I’m sure there must be readers who will find this especially interesting, but I doubt there are many. So why did Clinton write such a book? It’s hard to imagine he had any ideal readership in mind. We can safely propose one motive on general psychological principles: as was said of Theodore Roosevelt at the beginning of the 20th century, Clinton is a man who “wants to be the bride at every wedding and the corpse at every funeral”. He isn’t comfortable in the role of supernumerary; in fact, some observers of his wife’s presidential campaign felt that his counsel, despite its occasional sagacity, also demonstrated a compulsive, competisplus@nation.com.pk

tive aggression that may ultimately have done more harm than good. But it would be excessively cynical to attribute too much weight to that understandable human impulse. There are other, nobler explanations. When addressing the Hamilton Project last year, in the aftermath of the mid-term elections that had proved so cataclysmic for Democrats, Clinton expressed enormous frustration at the failure of the party and its candidates to make a strong, cogent national case. Those who were present had no doubt about his passion or his sincerity. He thought there was a powerful argument to be made and felt deep distress that nobody was making it. He probably also believed – not unreasonably – that no one could make it as well as himself. This book is likely the outgrowth of his frustration. Frustration that was predominantly political, not personal. Perhaps as a consequence, the book is almost devoid of human interest or any hint of the man’s vivid, outsize personality. Other than frequent reminders of the successes of his presidency, the closest we come are absences, those moments when the dog doesn’t bark. His wife is barely mentioned, for example, although it’s possible this represents a species of tact; her position as secretary of state requires that she largely remove herself from partisan politics. But the almost complete absence of Al Gore’s name – even in the passages relating to the environment – strikes this reader, at least, as ungenerous and unseemly. His references to President Obama, while generally positive, are also relatively sparse. His most pointed criticism, which, predictably, has received a great deal of press attention in the US, concerns Obama’s failure to secure a Republican pledge to raise the debt ceiling in exchange for an extension of the Bush tax cuts. But it’s worth noting that, in a public appearance in New York with his daughter earlier this month, Clinton publicly recanted, withdrawing the criticism and confessing he had his facts wrong. In general, as far as Barack Obama is concerned, one might say that the most rivalrous thing about the book is its existence. In many circles, at home and internationally, Clinton enjoys the reputation of being a rock star among politicians. He has now produced a book that may be said to reflect the essential Bill Clinton. splus@nation.com.pk

The Unconquered: In Search of the Amazon’s Last Uncontacted Tribes Author: Scott Wallace | No of Pages: 512 | Price: Rs. 1,895 | Genre: History Synopsis: Even today there remain tribes in the far reaches of the Amazon rainforest that have avoided contact with modern civilization. Deliberately hiding from the outside world, they are the unconquered, the last survivors of an ancient culture that predates the arrival of Columbus in the New World. In this gripping first-person account of adventure and survival, author Scott Wallace chronicles an expedition into the Amazon’s uncharted depths, discovering the rainforest’s secrets while moving ever closer to a possible encounter with one such tribe the mysterious flecheiros, or “People of the Arrow,” seldom glimpsed warriors known to repulse all intruders with showers of deadly arrows. On assignment for National Geographic, Wallace joins Brazilian explorer Sydney Possuelo at the head of a thirty-four-man team that ventures deep into the unknown in search of the tribe. Possuelo’s mission is to protect the Arrow People. But the information he needs to do so can only be gleaned by entering a world of permanent twilight beneath the forest canopy.

Soft Power: The Means to Success in World Politics Author: Joseph S. Nye, Jr. | No of Pages: 208 | Price: Rupees. 850 | Genre: Politics Synopsis: Joseph Nye coined the phrase ‘soft power’ to describe a nation’s ability to attract and persuade. Whereas hard power the ability to coerce grows out of a country’s military or economic might, soft power arises from the attractiveness of its culture, political ideals and policies. Hard power remains crucial in a world of states trying to guard their independence and of non-state groups willing to turn to violence. But as a new administration whether Republican or Democrat maps out its foreign policy, Nye emphasizes the importance of husbanding our military power and nurturing our soft power. It is soft power that will help prevent terrorists from recruiting supporters from among the moderate majority. And it is soft power that will help the United States deal with critical global issues that require multilateral cooperation.

Just a few years after Spider-Man 3, there whole superhero franchise got a reboot. In 2012, we’ll see Spider-Man take another form in the shape of British actor Andrew Garfield, who won audiences over with his cute stunt during this year’s Comic Con. Marc Webb‘s version, The Amazing Spider-Man will not include Mary Jane Watson; instead, it will highlight Spider-Man’s first real love, Gwen Stacy, who will be played by Emma Stone.

The Avengers is a crossover movie that will bring together our favorite superheroes including Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow and Hawkeye. This is a comic fan’s dream. We’re going to be seeing all of these superheroes on-screen, at the same time, fighting the forces of evil. More important, we’re going to see these characters interact with each other, which based off the trailer, we can garner that it’ll be very entertaining to watch. We’re excited!

Judd Apatow’s last directorial effort was the 2009 dramady Funny People. The film showed us a new side of Apatow, whose previous films Knocked Up and The 40-YearOld Virgin had been mainly comedies. Although This Is 40 is a spinoff from Knocked Up, the film will follow in the footsteps of Funny People in terms of tone (don’t worry, it’ll still be a comedy). Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl won’t be reprising their characters, instead the film will focus on Paul Rudd‘s and Leslie Mann‘s characters.

The Twisted Tale: Snow White and the Huntsman When the first photos of Kristen Stewart as Snow White were released, we were shocked to see her dressed in armor instead of the iconic blue and yellow dress. The photos showed that Rupert Sanders‘ version of the timeless fairytale would definitely be twisted and dark. The trailer confirmed our suspicions, and made Snow White and the Huntsman our favorite of the two Snow White films being released in 2012.
