Uth Records as a concept, is based on the acknowledgment that our country has an abundance of musical talent, but due to a dearth of avenues, such talent usually receives little recognition or opportunity to break into the industry, thereby stifling the potential a new generation of music can bring.
hus the vision behind Uth Records is: To first find talent through tapping into the demos of aspiring musicians; then select specific artists through the review of these demos by professional industry producers; to work closely with selected artists to arrange, compose and record their respective original compositions as guided by the producers, in a professional recording studio talent with some of Pakistan’s most gifted musicians. Each selected artist’s journey is recorded and then showcased on the Uth Records television show itself across multiple channels and on social media networks. This youth based music reality television show was launched by Ufone, showcased in the first three episode are three aspiring musicians named; Jumbo Jutt, Usman Riaz and Y&J band. These immaculate young musicians have captivated the viewers and critics off guard; their presence has been heart felt by music buffs all around,hence, hoping for some more budding talents from Uth Records in their up-coming episodes. The Uth Records television show is being directed by acclaimed director Zeeshan Parwez and Louis J Pinto (Gumby) and Omran ‘Momo’ Shafique as Uth Records’ Producers.
Jumbo Jutt:
Formed in 2009, Jumbo Jutt’s young line up includes Mohammad Ali Suhail on vocals and lead guitar, Syed Saad Shams on bass guitar, Adeel Hussain on the drums and Omar Kapadia on rhythm guitar. The band also won underground competition Lipton Battle of the Bands. For these young, self-taught musicians, it is a dream fulfilled to be recording their music professionally with the producers of Uth Records. Speaking for the band, vocalist and lead guitarist of Jumbo Jutt , says “The right pieces seem to be falling into place. It’s just the right mix of hands on and letting us do what we do. They’ve [The Uth Records Team] been very helpful and constantly trying to cater to what we want the song to turn out like and gave their honest advice when we needed it.”
Usman Riaz:
Hailing from a musical family background, Usman Riaz passion for music was inspired primarily by his grandmother within the classical genre. A vocalist and ‘percussive guitarist’ also inspired by the piano, Usman Riaz has performed live for audiences at events such as Celesta International Cultural Arts Festival held in Lucknow, an event for Calvin Klien at Port Grand and on a diversity of television and radio shows. Speaking about his experience at Uth Records, Usman Riaz says “My experience has been wonderful. I am very grateful that all these established artists have selected me to write a piece with them. It was a very eye opening experience where I got to see how they work and the best part is that I had complete freedom.”
The Y&J band:
A contemporary folk music dup from Peshawar, having initially formed the band in 2008, Yasir Rehman and Jawad Iqbal added a third musician to the Y&J band in 2010, Abdul Wali Orakzai, with Yasir on the traditional instrument, the Rubaab, Jawad on rhythm guitar and Wali as lead vocalist. The band has enjoyed developing compositions and structures with the Uth Records and team and to this end, Yasir, Jawad and Wali have said “It was our first experience working with such great artists of Pakistan. They are highly talented and really hard working. In fact recording was a tough procedure as they pushed us to strive for perfection which transformed our simple melody into something exceptional”. International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup 2011 has started; people from all over the world are in the groove and being loyal to their teams. Apart from horrid news concerning ban of three top-notch players and the stripping of Pakistan from its hosting rights, Pakistani’s as nation has other outlets in cricket to be proud off. total number of six international cricketers of Pakistani origin are playing as prominent players for different countries; which include Canada, South Africa and Netherlands. County cricket has widely been regarded as the ‘training school’, where potential international and local players can improve upon their weaknesses and work on areas which they lack. Major countries like England, South Africa, and Australia are pioneers in County Cricket, the new entrée in this list is India (Indian Premier League IPL) whose major attraction is not skill but entertainment. It is seen that many players due to less opportunities and no recognition in Pakistan look for other avenues to showcase their talent. Rizwan Cheema, a Pakistani national
is Canada’s most destructive batsman. His approach to opening the batting is reminiscent of Shahid Afridi’s impetuous early years; jarring dismissals in the first few balls, otherwise fireworks galore. His job is to get Canada off to a flier allowing the rest to not worry too much about the run-rate, absolutely fearless, with a desire to dominate top-level bowlers. The other player on this list is Khurram Chohan, who has established himself as Canada’s fist-choice opening bowler. He bowls at a nippy medium-pace and in his younger years played first-class cricket in Pakistan. Chohan, born in Lahore, Punjab, is an attacking bowler, more concerned with taking wickets than keeping a lid on proceedings. He can bat a bit too, though Canada tends to keep him much lower in

the order than his abilities merit. Hamza Tariq is a tidy wicket-keeper and a hard-hitting lower-order batsman. He was included in the World Cup squad essentially as cover behind the stumps for Ashish Bagai, who has persistent knee trouble. Tariq comes from the Under-19 team, though even there his opportunities were limited as he was back-up wicket-keeper to Rustam Bhatti. Imran Tahir an attacking legspinner, who is not afraid to toss the ball up and get hit for some runs, is considered the missing link in the South African bowling attack. The Pakistani-born bowler only became eligible to play for South Africa on New Year’s Day 2011 and was immediately drafted into their oneday side to play India. He was kept hidden for some time, with the indication that he would be used to catch batsmen unawares when he was eventually used. Tahir has played first-class cricket for 15 years, in his native Pakistan, at four English counties and two South Africa franchises.
Born in Lahore, Adeel Raja is an offspinner in the Graeme Swann mould. He finds prodigious turn and has excellent control, but his career hit the buffers after he failed a random drugs test. Raja was banned for two years in 2007 after testing positive for finasteride - a masking agent that can be used more innocently for combating hair loss. Mudassar Bukhari is a burly, hard-hitting all-rounder who can boast Test batsmen Taufeeq Umar and Mohammad Hafeez among his 33 ODI victims. Primarily a nagging medium-fast bowler he has been used as a pinch-hitter in club cricket though tends to bat down the order for Netherlands. These Pakistani players all started with county cricket playing for countries they are currently playing for and it’s the first time all of them are playing first class cricket i.e. International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup 2011, except for Raja who is a veteran of two World Cups. With the current status of these players and their teams it can be gauged that
Canada and Netherlands both are struggling to keep their ends up, as they have fallen flat on their faces giving one too many loosing strikes, while South Africa is enjoying third position giving the top two deserving slots to Australia and Pakistan. Imran Tahir is turning out to be a high end bowler for South Africa taking four wickets in 9 overs giving 38 runs only against England. The buzz on Netherlands in ICC World Cup 2011 is that their new and less experienced players are failing to face the tough and experienced players of their counterpart teams. The 17th ICC cricket world cup (2011) match initially went in Canada’s court, but with Pakistan’s bowling gears the in-experienced side had to give in to Pakistan’s power paced bowlers. With many important matches approaching in the coming weeks and cricket having the reputation of springing surprises and being an unpredictable game; teams and fans have to wait and see the verdict of the quarter-final hopefuls.

Over this past month I have been on many talk shows on TV and radio and I always get questions from viewers and listeners on what one can do to get great hair and skin and what are the best products in the market for them. Perfectil: The first time I heard about this formula was when I was in London. A friend of mine told me about it and she said that it really helped her hair and skin. After research I started recommending it to my own clients and have found that it really does work in most cases. Perfectil is a simple multivitamin that has to be taken once a day after your main meal. Hingol was a place of great rugged beauty in Balochistan even before it became a national park in 1988. It is spread out over an area of 619, 043 hectares, and is home to marsh crocodiles, Olive Ridley turtles, leopards, Persian wild goats, hyenas, spot-billed pelicans and the Houbara bustard. The park has been identified as an area of global significance for its diverse ecosystems, endangered wildlife and importance as a winter habitat for migratory birds. There are two dormant mud volcanoes in the park, as well as an ancient Hindu temple called Hinglaj where Hindus of the area still come for pilgrimage. brar Ahmad is a prominent painter from Karachi who has exhibited his paintings in Lahore after six years. The exhibition was attended by legendary artists Saeed Akhtar, R M Naeem and art lovers from different walks of life. The exhibition showcased, vibrant and colourful palettes of women in different moods and expressions. It was felt through the show that Abrar’s inspiration comes from Bengal Art and Gandhara sculpture which has now become a permanent feature of his artistry. Eight March is a magnificent and vibrant date on the calendar for women around the globe. From last ten decades women’s’ organisations, progress group and scholars are struggling for reorganisation, protection and accomplishing women rights. International Women Day gives us opportunity to pay homage and express our admiration for those who played incredible role in women rights movement. International Women Day acts as focus point showing the importance of bringing together women of all political persuasions, irrespective their social situation to ensure that every woman can fully enjoy all human rights and basic freedoms. Whenever we talk about women interests and welfare, attention goes to feminism or feminist movement. In Pakistan this word takes in numerous ways, mostly conceive as negative impression. Actuality feminist movements address equal opportunities for women as well as equal political, economical and social rights for them. It core intend is to understand the difference between gender inequities and gender variation. Basically the faith in equality among man and woman is called feminism and believer is feminist no matter is he or she. In presents days, when world is swiftly transforming, huge areas are under political turmoil and many regions are facing terrible financial depression. There are dreadful wars, great number of people are victims of terrorism and in many areas natural disasters are examining human nerve and patents. In our own home economic and political uncertainty, floods, constant blasts, poverty, joblessness, shortage of water, gas and electricity make life hell for every body. In this scenario when universally human beings are suffering, question arises, how logical would it be to talk about
women movement and their rights? Taking practical steps for safeguarding women rights is much important than ever before but for this purpose human rights groups, women organisations and specially academics and scholars must keep their minds open and must critically analyse world’s events. Here we must also inquire from ourselves that when establishment of democracy, liberty to civil society, media and freedom of judiciary is claimed then why the rate of crime and brutality against women is increasing shamelessly. According to the report of Human Rights Watch in the last six months of 2010, numbers of crimes against women were 5014. For more than a decade, we are experiencing in our daily lives ‘Globalisation’ that stands for free movement of capital from one region to other and no trade restrictions between countries. Globalisation has badly affected gender equality. Globalisation is not only an economical change but it has given international companies unlimited authority and power to make
local governments weaker and easily violate basic human rights. Women are the main and easy targets. Their main motive and agenda is undermining women and minority rights. But all over the world particularly in Pakistan women movement strongly reacted against this attitude. Pakistan’s founding father, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, said in 1944: No nation can rise to the height of glory unless your women are side by side with you. After the creation of Pakistan movement of women rights was struggling to bring changes in legislation and eliminate anti women laws. Successful example of women struggle is establishment of Muslim personal law in 1948; because of this the share of women in heritance was accepted. Just like this in 1961 Muslim family law ordinance was set up. According to this women were entitled to have legal protection in marriage and divorce. In the era of Ziaul Haq Islamization, movement of women rights had to face critical challenge and such prejudice laws were implemented that women were degraded as human being. But Pakistani women fought bravely again this conspiracy and exposed the injustice being done in the name of Islam. In Pakistan women rights movement was facing problems that the women who were participating in this campaign were from a particular class. The poor labour and farmer women were not the powerful part of this movement. Billions of women were part of working force but unfortunately not recognized as labour. Though today when all of us are going through a tough time. Good thing about this movement is that now it is reaching to common woman of Pakistan. This change is the ray of hope.

All along he had been saying that his policy was not to dismember Pakistan. But after election he took 180 degree turn and adopted a different position. After independence he claimed that he had planning to make Bangladesh since 1968.
he book under review is a first hand account of an army officer who was witness to most of the developments. How things changed the way they did and what caused him and his comrades to rise against the tyrannical rule of Sheikh Mujibur Rehman leading to his death are explained in detail. The book also is an account of the personal life of the author, his falling in love and his close association with the key players in Bangldeshi politics. The book begins with an account of the last days of Ayub era. The Basic Democracy System was the root cause for widespread corruption. His choice to appoint his trusted henchman Monem Khan as governor of East Pakistan. The governor’s son organised armed groups to physically mow down anti-Ayub sentiment among the students of East Pakistan. That was the starting point of anti-Ayub sentiment among the general public as well. The withdrawal of Agartala conspiracy case made Sheikh Mujib a ‘fairy tale’ leader. When the anti-Ayub movement intensified General Yahya Khan took over the power. This was the beginning of the end of the united Pakistan. General Yahya to subdue the anger of Bengalis ordered some steps. Quota for the Bengalis in armed forces was doubled. Orders were issued that whenever any senior post fell vacant Bengali

officers should be posted there on priority basis. Fourth five year plan was presented to reduce the economic disparity between East and West Pakistan. But perhaps this was coming too late as already the political climate was getting hotter. The 1970 election was the first when direct voting was introduced. Elections were also held in tribal areas for the first time. ZA Bhutto’s party won majority seats in West Pakistan and Mujib’s Awami League won most of the seats in East Pakistan. The writer blames both the leaders of being power hungry that led to divisions and failure of talks to hand over power to elected representatives. The decision of the military junta to use bullets hammered the last nail in the coffin. Pakistan army’s operation to crush the political movement is the saddest chapter in the history. The Bengali officers serving in the Pakistani army were perturbed to hear the news. They wanted to know about the safety of
their families back home. They were not trusted for deployment in East Pakistan. The author being major in the army at the time was serving in Quetta. He along with two lieutenants decided to escape. The author gives a detailed account of their journey undetected to Delhi where after some days they too asylum at the foreign office. Here they came in contact with the head of RAW. Later they were shifted to Calcutta where a provisional government of Bangladesh had been set up under the patronage of Indian government. Bengali youth were being trained at Dehradoon and other centres. The dismemberment of Pakistan was all India’s planning. It was not only equipping and training the Mukti Bahani but RAW was also training a separate 100,000 strong Bangladesh Liberation Force to help the Awami League stay in power. The BLF was the same force that was successively named Mujib Bahini and Jatio Rakkhi Bahini later in Bangladesh. The Indian forces attacked East Pakistan and 90,000 Pakistani soldiers were made to surrender. The provisional prime minister
REview and his cabinet returned to independent Bangladesh with ideological bankruptcy. Sheikh Mujib was released. From London instead of going straight to Dhaka he went first to Delhi to meet Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He had become a stooge of the Indians and had gone there to endorse the 30 year treaty of cooperation signed with India. The writer explains in detail the Indian interference in the affairs of Bangladesh and their attempts to create divisions in the Bangladeshi army. How the army chief was pressured conspiracies were hatched are explained in detail. Like minded members of the armed forces formed a secret organisation called Sena Parishad. It monitored every policy decision and action of the government. It also maintained contacts with like minded compatriots among the civil bureaucracy, students, media people and cross section of the people. Sheikh Mujib pro Indian stance, his corrupt inefficient, anarchic law and order situation and economic chaos painted a bleak future for the country. He had already introduced one party rule and his armed groups were making life of Bengalis difficult and miserable. The Sena Parishad thought that revolutionary action had become inevitable to free people from the tyranny of the autocratic regime. The writer and his wife were
abducted by the superintendent of police to be killed. They were saved as the army took action to stop the killing. Later Dalim and eight other officers were compulsorily retired. August 15, 1975 swift military action and the revolution had come. Sheikh Mujib and some members of his family were killed. People flocked to the streets on getting freed from tyrannical dictatorship. Sweets were distributed in every neighbourhood. The Indian myth had broken. Some Indian influenced officers tried to stage a second revolution. To avoid blood bath the author and 13 other officers along with their families decided to leave the country. After they left three days later the popular revolution was initiated under the join leadership of Sena Parishad and Gone Bahini. The evil conspiracy of India was foiled. The traitor officers tried to escape but were killed by the revolutionaries. The author and other officers were given indemnity. He continued to serve Bangladesh at different diplomatic missions across the globe. The book is a must read for young generation that have not seen the events of the dismemberment of Pakistan with their own eyes. The writer had presented first hand knowledge about the different events that happened at the time. There are many interesting incidents that the writer had narrated. The three attempts

Passing references that the economy of Pakistan was doing better than India and that Pak rupee was stronger than India’s and gold was cheaper here in Pakistan point to the fact that we lost what God had bestowed upon us. “At that time greater section of the armed forces and the people of West Pakistan were quiet prepared to accept Sheikh Mujib as PM but on one condition that he must maintain the territorial integrity of Pakistan. Similarly the common people of East Pakistan were also not in favour of dismemberment of Pakistan. But the general public opinion carried no weight then. The fate of Pakistan was distinctly dependent on two leaders only; in West Pakistan it was ZA Bhutto and in East Pakistan Sheikh Mujib. But both these ambitious leaders were blind for power, which was more important to them than the national interest,” Dalim writes. His simple but meaningful comments explain it all. There are lessons to be learnt. We must salvage what is left and work hard to make Pakistan strong and prosperous as was envisioned by Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

A report has been issued by Pakistan Education Task Force as part of their March for Education Campaign. It says, for example, the cost of not educating Pakistanis is the equivalent of one flood per year, and there is much more where that came from in the report. The campaign website was launched on the 9th and aims to get a million signatories to a petition urging the government not to further cut the education budget. The site educationemergency. com.pk is operational from March 9 to 31. The aim is to collect one million signatures to increase the education quota in the federal budget this year. Report Highlights a. The economic cost of not educating Pakistan is the equivalent of one flood every year. The only difference is that this is a self-inflicted disaster. b. One in ten of the world’s out of school children is a Pakistani. That is the equivalent of the entire population of Lahore. c. There is a 0 percent chance that the government will reach the millennium development goals by 2015 on education. On the other hand, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are all on their way to achieving the same goals. India’s improvement rate is ten times that of Pakistan, Bangladesh’s is twice that of Pakistan. d. But, despite this gloomy situation, determined efforts can show results in only two years. What is required is an additional spend of Rs 100 billion, a fifty per cent increase over current spend.

What has been overlooked in the discourse on the 18th Amendment is that education has now become a right and no longer a privilege as it was previously. Article 25a sets up a possible scenario where a citizen can take the government to court for not providing them access, or even be the grounds for a suo moto action. f. At current rates of progress, no person alive today will see a Pakistan with universal education as defined in our constitution. Balochistan would see it in 2100 or later. g. Just one year of education for women in Pakistan can help reduce fertility by 10 percent, controlling the other resource emergency this country faces. h. There are twenty-six countries poorer than Pakistan but send more of their children to school, demonstrating the issue is not about finances, but will and articulating demand effectively. It is too easy, and incorrect, to believe that Pakistan is too poor to provide this basic right. i. Pakistan spent 2.5 percent of its budget on schooling in 2005/2006. It now spends just 1.5 percent in the areas that need it most. That is less than
the subsidies given to PIA, PEPCO and Pakistan Steel. Provinces are allocated funds for education but fail to spend the money. j. We presume the public school system is doing poorly because teachers are poorly paid, this is untrue. Public school teachers get paid 2/3rds more than their equivalent private low cost school counterparts, they earn four times that of the average parent of a child in their school. Despite this, on any given day 10-15 percent of teachers will be absent from their duties teaching. k. There is demand for education that is partly being addressed by low cost private schools, even one third of all rural children go to these schools (public schools can cost Rs 150 per month, low cost private schools the same or up to Rs 250). Despite the large presumption of the media, both domestic and international, this gap is not actually being addressed by Madrasahs. Only 6 percent of students go to Madrasahs. l Only 35 percent of school children, aged 6-16, can read a story, while 50 percent cannot read a sentence. Their performance is only

Jam Ingredients l 900g/2lb strawberries,
hulled and washed l 450g/1lb gooseberries, topped and tailed l 1.3kg/3lb warm preserving sugar l 5 tbsp balsamic vinegar
Method 1. Layer the fruit and sugar together in a large china bowl, cover and leave in a cool place for 6-8 hours. 2. Transfer the fruit and sugar to a large preserving pan. Add the balsamic vinegar and heat gently until the sugar has totally dissolved, then bring to the boil. 3. Boil rapidly for 10-12 minutes or until setting point is reached. Remove from the heat and leave to cool for 20-25 minutes. 4. Pour into the clean and warm jars, cover with a wax disc and cellophane top,

was to use these leading European brands to give access of branded cosmetics to the middle and upper middle class of Pakistan, which is the heart of our consumer market. BK: Tell us about the beauty industry in Pakistan. Have you been able to penetrate and make your mark in the beauty industry along with known brands like L’Oreal, Revlon etc? Hassan: Beauty industry of Pakistan is huge but unorganised. It has a good base of user and it has become a part of necessity, but unfortunately, till date beauty in our country is still considered as luxury. Being a 4 year old company and with competition like the ones you have mentioned, I think we have started making our mark. Our business is growing on a healthy rate and our target market has been very loyal to us in terms of repeat purchase. Our range of products for the teenagers as well as for young adults has won many hearts. BK: What is your marketing strategy to lure the gigantic beauty industry of Pakistan? Hassan: As already mentioned, our strategy is simple. Give consumers top of the line brands with exceptional quality at affordable prices. You crack this combination and you have a successful business!
