T

he pandemic has not only changed the way we work – with virtual meetings and Zoom calls now the norm – but also the way we live. Having spent much of the past two years at home has forced us to re-evaluate our needs. There’s a stronger focus on wellbeing – physical and mental – and a greater appreciation for experiences rather than material items. This is also reflected in current décor trends that are bringing a minimalist approach to home décor.

Leading design experts in the Cape region offer an insight into current design trends

Bathrooms have been elevated into spas and relaxation areas, and greater emphasis has been placed on curating welcoming and calming spaces. Those who are not afraid to play with colour have opted to personalise their homes with vibrant tones and biophilic patterns. Some of the Cape’s leading design experts agree that home owners want clean lines and functional design that allows them to add a personal touch; be it with a textured tile or an industrial-style wine display.

VERSATILE TILING Stephan Morgan of Decobella says home owners are using tiles to introduce colour into their homes. The ubiquitous subway tile has evolved in recent years, says Morgan, and nine sizes and various colours and textures are now available. “I think the popularity of this tile is mainly due to its versatility of use in small spaces and an assortment of options in texture, colour, finish and patterns.” It’s possible to personalise a splashback by mixing hues or tiling in non-conventional designs such as herringbone or vertical. “For those not convinced, add textures inspired by handcraft artistry or even actual handmade encaustic subways to create the popular Zellige (a handcrafted tile from Morocco) look.”

BIOPHILIC DESIGN When it comes to surfaces, nature is a dominant theme, says the team from Interslab. “People are looking to slow down, and de-stress and we can do this with biophilic design. So textured finishes and earthy tones are being requested in surfaces.” To attain the clean, crisp look, many home owners are using large-scale slabs for walls, floors, cupboard cladding, CAPE TOWN DÉCOR GUIDE l JUNE 2022

splashbacks and large-scale islands. “High-quality engineered quartz, like Caesarstone, is still the most requested countertop material as it comes with a lifetime warranty. It is durable and increases the value of your home,” says the Interslab team. “Apart from that, we have many queries for ultra-thin porcelain surfaces, as this is incredibly versatile for cladding and can be used outdoors and near heat like fireplaces.”

WINE AS ART Collections and displays have become design features, notes Lauren Snyman of the Wine Room, saying that wine is being displayed as “artwork”. She explains: “We are seeing many more clients opting for slim wine displays integrated into their living areas as part 8

of their overall design décor, rather than keeping cellars as separate spaces in their homes.” These are often hybrid serving areas where wine and spirits are stored, served, and celebrated together. Wood is no longer the only material of choice. There is a definite shift towards using metal wine displays in gold, silver and contemporary industrial colours such as black or charcoal grey. High-tech, cellar-graded frameless sealed glass with slimline seals ensure a sleek aesthetic for climate-controlled spaces.

BRAAI TIME A perennial in Cape Town, with its hot summers and occasional balmy winter’s evening, is the outdoor fire pit. These fire pits not only provide a source of heat and a place to cook, but they are the centrepiece of the entertainment area.

Signi Fires

Signi Fires

ENERGY-EFFICIENT FIREPLACES The move towards minimalism is evident in fireplaces as well, says the team from Signi Fires. “Suspended or hanging firepits are extremely popular now, as the clean lines complement modern design trends. It is both a functional piece that provides warmth and memories for families in their homes and a piece of art that accentuates the space.” While white and black are mainstays in fireplaces, home owners are also considering colour options. While design is important, energy efficiency is essential, says the Signi Fires team. Fireplaces that comply with the European energy-efficiency requirements are in demand, as well as any solution that provides efficient and effective heating. “Closed combustion wood fireplaces

are still the most popular freestanding fireplaces, but gas has become increasingly popular over the last few years, especially in the built-in segment.” Biofuel or ethanol fireplaces, popular in Europe, do well in Cape Town too. They offer an eco-friendly and versatile option for those looking for an easy-to-use fireplace that can move from room to room as needed. Whether it’s a lazy Sunday afternoon around the braai with friends, or a Saturday evening sampling some of your finest whiskey, these design experts will ensure that these features of your home are in step with the latest décor trends. Q With thanks to Decobella, Interslab, Signi Fires, The Wine Room

And when the weather does not allow for outdoor brazing, Capetonians move inside to their braai room, which may be located on the side of the house, or a designated indoor room. Gas braais are commonly used in braai rooms as they emit less smoke and are easier to clean.

ESTATE LIVING

LIVING

H

omes in residential estates in the Western Cape continue to be in high demand, especially since the pandemic, as quality of life has become a top priority for homeowners, says Dr Andrew Golding, CE of Pam Golding Properties. “Buyers are willing to pay a premium for a home in a sought-after estate.”

12

TYPES OF ESTATES The Western Cape abounds with estates offering an array of amenities. From the ultra-luxurious lifestyle in estates such as Val de Vie and Pearl Valley to eco estates like Lake Michelle in Noordhoek, the Western Cape has plenty to offer, says Golding. Other estates include boutique estates, mountain estates such as Stonehurst Estate overlooking the Constantia Valley, golf estates like Arabella Country Estate near Hermanus, country estates in the Winelands and beach estates such as Atlantic Beach near Melkbosstrand. DESIGN THEMES What stands out for designers curating homes in these estates is the clever design and finishes of the joinery, as well as the wall coverings that lay the base for

the homes’ décor, says Cheryl Herweg of Changing Spaces Interior Design. While the homes often have to comply with architectural guidelines, home owners make the most of interesting materials, textures and design elements to create standout estate homes. To give her clients their personal stamp, Herweg carefully intertwines what works architecturally and what they love to live with and see in their homes. “There is a lot of fluted detail in wall cladding, joinery and kitchens, which is rather beautiful and will be around for a long time,” says Herweg. Brass and marble are used often in luxurious interiors, and rattan, wicker, and plants are used extensively. Custom-printed or textured wallpaper is trendy, easily transforming a space to give it character.

“PEOPLE WANT THEIR HOME OFFICE TO BE COMFORTABLE AND AN AESTHETICALLY PLEASING SPACE.” – CHERYL HERWEG OF CHANGING SPACES INTERIOR DESIGN

VARIED OFFERING Estates offer security, a variety of amenities – from gyms and recreational facilities to schools – as well as an enviable lifestyle that makes them ideal for families and those seeking lock-upand-go living in beautiful surroundings. “Depending on the location and the client’s brief and style, I like to incorporate the surroundings in the way of the colour palette, textures and patterns,” says Herweg. “The finishes on many estate homes reflect what is happening outside, and materials like stone, marble, slate, and natural materials work as well internally,” she adds.

HOME ENTERTAINMENT Lockdown restrictions reminded home owners of the importance of living in a home that caters to a family’s needs. They want to know that they will be able to walk their dogs or play with their children at the nearby park in a controlled environment. Herweg says that with more people spending time at home, fully equipped outdoor kitchens have become far more practical than just being an outdoor braai. “Here we see wood braai, gas braai and pizza ovens in an outdoor kitchen space with prep bowls for water and undercounter fridges for beverages.” Another trend is fully kitted playrooms or entertainment spaces for teenagers where they can socialise with friends, adds Herweg. 14

"IT IS THE FASTEST-GROWING LUXURY PROPERTY TREND IN THE COUNTRY." – DR ANDREW GOLDING, PAM GOLDING PROPERTIES

WORK REMOTELY Many companies have adopted a hybridworking model, which means that more people can work remotely. Herweg says there is still a huge demand for the home office. “People want their home office to be comfortable and an aesthetically pleasing space.” This shift has resulted in renewed semigration from cities to areas traditionally considered holiday or weekend destinations, says Golding. Lifestyle estates in these parts of the Western Cape have become particularly popular with buyers moving from Gauteng or other regions. “It’s not surprising that Lightstone reports that the value of properties in estates is higher than any other property type and is rising more rapidly,” says Golding. “It is the fastest-growing luxury property trend in the country, and many of the top estates – favoured for their superlative lifestyle and amenities offered – are in the Western Cape.” Q

THE COOL CARAVAN PARK

The Grand Daddy Boutique Hotel’s Rooftop Airstream Trailer Park is the talk of the town

C

ape Town’s iconic city-centre hotel, The Grand Daddy Boutique Hotel’s Rooftop Airstream Trailer Park, is a unique accommodation offering. The ideal retreat for design enthusiasts, the trailer park is one of the Mother City’s best stays, offering an intimate experience of SA’s design capital. Dane van Heteren, the general manager of The Grand Daddy Boutique Hotel, shares more about the hotel: “As a heritage building, we have been operating for over 120 years. So much more than just a hotel, The Grand Daddy is a local landmark that bustles with an energy that is quintessentially Cape Town.”

18

The designer Rooftop Airstream Trailer Park is a one-of-its-kind, says van Heteren. As part of the 2021 Decorex Cape Town Design Trail, Decorex Africa and 100% Design South Africa partnered with the legendary hotel on an exciting refurbishment and interior design project where some of South Africa’s top interior designers revamped the Airstream trailers. “Our seven authentic Airstream trailers each have their own individual décor theme and collectively reflect a typically South African road trip. Authentic Airstream trailers are incredible works of craftsmanship and their classic shape is unforgettably iconic,” adds van Heteren.

ne for the ardent nature-loving traveller, the Karoo Dorps trailer celebrates the rich flora and fauna of the vast Karoo landscapes setting the mood for an urban escape. Cheryl Herweg, interior designer and CEO of Changing Spaces Interior Design, the firm that refurbished the interiors of the original Airstream trailer, shares her approach: “Working with the theme of Karoo Dorps, we conceptualised the interiors with a nod to the beautiful Karoo. We did not want it to be too contrived, and therefore came up with a design that is fun, quirky and interesting yet still very warm and welcoming as well as practical.” Herweg used custom-printed wallpaper by Cara Saven Wall Design as a key element in the design. She says: “The

wallpaper reflects the Karoo flora and fauna on one side of the trailer, which is a snapshot in time in the Karoo. We opted for a black and white colour palette, with a few coloured aspects like the aloes, etc., to maintain a contemporary feel. “On the rest of the walls, we used a highly textured wallpaper to add depth. For an element of fun, the back of the toilet door has a quirky wallpaper of a cheeky ostrich head peeping around the door.” Inspired by scenes of the Karoo’s flora and fauna, Herweg used a colour palette of varying green and sandy tones, rust, black and white and paired this with lots of different textured and patterned fabrics in the furniture and scatter cushions to add more layers and interest. “The woodwork on the sides of the trailer act as side pedestals to the bed – this was done in a wooden parquet pattern, which is strikingly beautiful and different. Quirky accessories keep the mood light and fun, while the old photos of the Karoo on the wall above the built-in seating add a sense of history too,” shares Herweg. Whether you’re a local or not, stepping inside this trailer will transport you to the Karoo and make you long for a visit.

Our concept for the Beach House trailer was to design a bright, light and comfortable space. – Vanessa Theron, Beach House Living Studio

Highlighting this beautiful small town, Vanessa Theron – the owner and creative director of Beach House Living Studio – and her team were tasked with reimagining this Airstream trailer. Theron shares her approach to the brief: “As part of the original brief, a journey through SA, we highlighted our wonderful coastal town of Hermanus, which, of course, is the epitome of slow

living at the gorgeous coastline. To fit in with the quirky interior of the hotel, which our company completed in 2016, our concept for the Beach House trailer was to design a bright, light and comfortable space.” To recreate the beachy vibe of the town in the trailer, Theron worked with a play on various textures to add the right amount of detail to create a tranquil space where guests can relax and unwind. “We used a tropical-print wallpaper, a textured rattan-like vinyl headboard, and natural wooden elements such as the cladding, a driftwood mirror and wooden surfboard. This was enhanced with lots of greenery to bring in an element of nature.” Much like a compact beach house, this trailer is a comfy space to retreat to after a long day of being out and about, enjoying the sandy beaches and sunshine.

decided to accent modern glamour within the Gold Rush theme. Opting for a gold and black palette, Townsend comments on her design approach: “I decided to focus on the gold and black, and use luxurious velvets and suedes for the soft furnishings and upholstery. I used paint to create a sexy interior as well as lavishly luxe wallpaper to create a feeling of opulence. The large pattern enlarges the rather compact space.” While the Cape is known for its relaxed aesthetic, the Gold Rush trailer is different and offers those who adore a little decadence of high-end stays a space to indulge without the guilt.

oasting breathtaking views of the wine estates, luscious landscapes and enchanting Cape Dutch-style architecture, and renowned for its delicious food and wine, the Cape Winelands is as alluring to international visitors as it is for locals. Drawing on this beauty, this trailer’s aesthetic incorporates biophilic design with a light colour palette to allow local design and décor items to stand out, says Suné Uys, interior architect at Osmond Lange Architects and Interiors.

Elaborating on the direction, Uys says: “Biophilic design aims to increase connectivity between humans and nature. This concept is applied to the interior design of the Cape Winelands trailer with the addition of living plants and décor elements that feature leaves and plants, such as wall art, custom wallpaper and scatter cushions. The grape leaf motif is repeated in the framed pressed vine leaf artwork and printed leaves on scatter cushions. A more abstract reference to grapes and leaves can be found in the green tones of the feature wall, wall tiles and blinds.” Featuring a light, natural colour palette and layered textures comprising handwoven throws, cushions, woven carpets and baskets, the trailer evokes a cosy and luxurious ambience that is further enhanced by concealed LED light strips for a moody feel when desired. Mostly importantly, this trailer offers guests an opportunity to explore the beautifully crafted décor products. As Uys points out: “All the décor elements were carefully chosen and inspired by the rich colour palette of the region’s fynbos and vineyards. Each décor piece tells a story that originates from its artist or crafter. Most products are local and handmade:

able Mountain is one of the many reasons the Mother City attracts global travellers, whether it’s to experience the expansive city views from the mountain top or savour the majestic sight of the ever-present landmark from wherever you are in town. The mountain was the source of inspiration for owner of Lion and Tyers Design, Nicky Tyers, who was responsible for upgrading the onceshabby Airstream trailer. Sharing her concept, Tyers says: “When Table Mountain was ravaged by enormous fires, the foot of the mountain was burnt to cinders. These fires sparked new beginnings and new growth. The fynbos flourished after a dormant period. During the COVID-19 lockdown, the world was forced into isolation, and people had to think differently. Out of this chaos, they experienced new growth, and eventually

they were resurrected. People realised how important it was to spend time with loved ones and explore nature with sheer gratitude.” Effectively materialising the theme of regrowth, Tyers used a mix of natural materials and elements of nature in the form of graphic cushions and custom-illustrated artwork to create an expression of the regrowth after the Cape Fires. One of the standout features is the custom wallpaper. “It was printed on a stretch fabric, much like a silky cocoon, to envelop the space. The oversized hand illustrations added a sense of magic, highlighting that there are no rules when interpreting ‘Bloomin’ Daisies’.” For those fortunate guests who stay at The Grand Daddy Boutique Hotel’s Rooftop Airstream Trailer Park and, particularly in the Bloomin’ Daisies trailer, the experience of Table Mountain will linger for many years to come.
