Through all the uncertainty, South Africans have demonstrated a resilience that deserves recognition, no matter what, we move forward.

CPUT student Manuel Valdina’s Zungueria Lamp clinched second place. Inspired by Angolan street vendors and their resilience, this lamp is a testament to creativity and strength. Gary Wium, a student at Greenside School in Johannesburg, crafted the A-Jar Floor Lamp, evoking childhood nostalgia and the warm glow of a door slightly ajar at night.

During the unbridled landscape of a divided and segregated South Africa, amid oppressive policies, social disparities and apartheid rule, Nico van der Meulen set out on an entrepreneurial journey, a road that would require navigating constraints of time in the humble hope of establishing a legacy in the built environment of South Africa.

The architectural firm was established in 1984 by owner and founder Nico van der Meulen and his wife Santa. Nico grew up on a farm near the border between South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe. He initially studied civil engineering, explored project management and later registered as a professional architect. Looking back through time, having set out on a journey to amalgamate studies, experiences and his passion for making and building, Nico van der Meulen Architects pioneered ingenuity from inception, daring to defy constraints of time and place, with the hope of laying the foundations

for a legacy that would transcend barriers and imbue generations to come with inspiration.

THE FOUNDATIONS

The infancy years were defined by explorations into the unknown and marked by challenges, as the architectural industry and landscape were mirrored by the restless sociopolitical climate. Nico, however, through perseverance and a steadfast commitment to realising dreams and achieving excellence, excelled at carving out a niche environment in the luxury residential market, developing projects and creating buildings that were imbued with functionality and purpose. This philosophy has remained true until this day, as Nico states eloquently: “In architecture, functionality should always be given higher priority than the form, considering we spend our entire lives inhabiting the structures we’ve designed, rather

than admiring their external appearances. Functionalism is our design philosophy and while our facades could have any form and be associated with any style, our buildings will always remain functional.”

During these formative years as Nico van der Meulen Architects, numerous projects of varying scales and complexities formed the basis of the work done by the studio. The early projects were characterised by strong forms and gravity-defying elements and the transposing of Tuscan-styled architecture into a South African context and environment for which it was well-suited and equipped architecturally. At the dawn of democracy, with novelty and renewal at the forefront of cultural activities and the social landscape, the built environment naturally followed suit. The studio’s architectural language later developed into a more Modern approach to space and form-making. Characterised by “flying beams”, >

archways and an abundance of glass, either as openings, walls or extensions, this style of architecture was testament to Nico’s formative years in his practice, and emblematic of his ability to meld luxury with functionality, even amid adversity.

ELEVATION AND EVOLUTION

As South Africa transitioned into and during the early years of democracy, so Nico van der Meulen Architects underwent somewhat of a metamorphosis, developing and evolving into a powerhouse for innovative design and ingenuity in the residential architecture space. With a sophisticated and keen eye and attention to detail and a dedication to craftmanship, the firm steadily expanded into a multicultural and multitalented group of individuals under Nico’s stewardship, exploring and pushing boundaries of design in their pursuit of redefining the concept of luxury living.

Projects such as Kloof Road House and Forest Road developed spatially and aesthetically. With their striking cantilevering structures and the integration and fusion of glass, concrete, steel and bold forms, nestled into a delicate context, these homes developed into sophisticated armatures for life, offering sanctuary and serenity amid the chaos of urban life.

Nico van der Meulen Architects did not rest on its laurels, however, with Nico’s vision to build on the firm’s past successes and further enrich his vision for the future by expanding the service offerings of Nico van der Meulen Architects’ portfolio. This was achieved by offering interior design services through its associate company M Square Lifestyle Design, and later, an enhancement company offering bespoke and tailored furniture, décor and kitchen and wardrobe fit-outs in M Square Lifestyle Necessities. These two companies provided clients with “whole home” solutions, with the combined companies’ services transcending mere buildings and embodying a lifestyle of luxury and refinement.

VISIONARY HORIZONS

Looking back over four decades of architectural excellence, three of which were in a democratic South Africa, the journey for Nico and Nico van der Meulen Architects and its associated companies is far from complete. With the dawn of Contemporary design and architecture, the company continues to go from strength to strength, always pushing the boundaries of what is possible, continually innovating and embracing new and sustainable technologies that would help shape our living environments of tomorrow.

A design language of bold forms and dynamic shapes has become part of Nico van der Meulen’s ethos.

Projects such as S Residence, Mooikloof Heights and Blair Athol stand as testaments to decades of pursuing excellence and forward-thinking. These projects, among the nearly 4000 other buildings and homes that Nico oversaw during his stewardship, not only redefine luxury living, but also underwrite the firm’s commitment to quality, innovation and beauty.

But, perhaps the most exciting aspects of Nico van der Meulen Architects’ future lies in its embrace of collaboration through engagement. The firm has always held in high regard the various specialists, contractors and professionals that form part of the journey of every single project or home that has been built in pursuit of quality and excellence. In the 1990s, homes often mirrored European and colonial in uences, with styles such as Cape Dutch and Victorian very prominent. Cape Dutch architecture, characterised by whitewashed walls, thatched roofs and ornate gables, remained popular. This period also saw the emergence of Mediterranean and Tuscan styles, marked by terracotta roofs, stucco exteriors and rustic nishes, which appealed to home owners seeking a more Mediterranean ambience.

From the early 2000s, there has been a notable shift towards more contemporary and minimalist designs. Architects began incorporating sleek lines, open-plan layouts and industrial materials like concrete and steel. 30 years of better sleep

In 2021 The Foschini Group bought the family-owned bed linen brand Granny Goose. The synergy between Granny Goose and TFG’s @home brand is undeniable, both serving a customer with refined taste and a need for luxury homeware products.

“Only delivering the best quality sleep” has been synonymous with the brand since day one. In the early 1990s, Gaynor McVitty began a small production facility in her home in Constantia, making pure down-filled duvets and pillows. At the time, a pure down duvet or pillow was unheard of in the South African retail context.

Gaynor placed a small mail order advertisement in a magazine – a call to action to cut off a little slip of paper at the bottom, detailing your order, and to send this off to Gaynor with a cheque in the mail. She would then make your duvet or pillow and ship it to your door. That month Gaynor turned a R10 000 investment in an advert into 15 times her original spend.

Granny Goose grew in popularity via word of mouth and soon demand outstripped the capacity to make everyone’s dream duvet or pillow one by one, by hand. Gaynor and her husband began a small factory of 30 staff to meet the demand for these luxury bedding essentials and opened seven Granny Goose stores across South Africa.
