Historical Churches Echoed with Prays 90 Years Later Fener Greek Patriarch Bartholomeos came to Fethiye, visited Kayaköy and prayed at the historical churches. The Bishop Alexander Karloutsos from New York, France Metropolitan Bishop Emmanuel Adamakis and Istanbul Islands Metropolitan Bishop Haralombos Sofroniadis also came to Kayaköy. Bartholomeos came to Kayaköy under wide security precautions and visited the historical Greek houses. The Patriarch checked over the churches and chapels at the alleys of Kayaköy and received information from the authorities about the buildings.

HE PRAYS FOR MOTHER MARY AND ANGELS

Bartholomeus first visited the Upper Church and prayed for the Mother Mary and angels. He entered in the historical chapels one by one and his visit ended at the Lower Church. Barho-

lomeos said prayers here as well and accepted holiday-makers asking to take photos with him.

'I HOPE A LOT OF TOURISTS WILLCOME” Barholomeus explained they came to Muğla for a trip for 2 days with his friends and remembered his ancestors during his Kayaköy trip. Bartholomeos wished health and peace to the people living in this region and said, “I had been in Kayaköy

Association Helps Storks Storks nesting on the mosque at Fethiye Esenköy Gökalan for nearly 10 years could not make a nest this time. Karaçulha Cultural Association President Emin Kızıl and Karaçulha Fire Department helped the two storks who had been trying to make a nest for 34 days. When the materials carried to the top of the mosque for the storks kept flying and falling around, citizens reported this to the association and the municipality. The nest which was made from a fruit case by Karaçulha Cultural Association President Emin Kızıl was put at the top of the mosque. Storks will fly their nestlings from here. Association President Emin Kızıl said they were happy to help storks and explained, “Changing natural conditions affect the lives of animals badly. Tourism in 12 Month is the Goal

The projects carried out by Fethiye Chamber of Commerce and Industry laid the foundations of 12 month tourism in Fethiye. The administration of the Chamber with the presidency of Akif Arıcan that have been working very hard to increase the service quality of the Chamber and develop our town economically and socially carry out projects to extend the tourism season in Fethiye. The

Chamber President Akif Arıcan pointed out, “When we consider the opportunities in our town, tourism lasts not for 3-4 months but for 12 months. We should work hard together for this. As the Chamber, we are ready to do what we should do in this platform.” While the tourism season has been shortening every year, the projects to extend tourism season carry on. The shortened tourism season

causes unemployment, recess in economic life and problems in social life in our town so the Chamber of Commerce and Industry carries out projects to enliven the economic life, extend the tourism season, and prevent unemployment. The Chamber aims at offering different alternatives to holiday-makers except the sea-sun-sand tourism in our region. As a variety of alternative

tourism, walking tracks have been introduced at fairs by the Chamber and projects to extend tourism season are considered in the first place. The 12 month tourism goal first introduces the walking tracks, cycling roads, the cable car project which is planned to be made a tender and enable 12 month season for paragliding even in cloudy weather and winter months, two tracks to be opened at 1200 and 850 m in June and training tracks to be opened at 300 and 600 m to make Babadağ

an attraction centre. The Chamber Board also works very hard to open a Faculty of Management as part of Muğla University to bring significant contributions to our town economically and socially. Courses opened in cooperation with the Turkey Employment Agency to prevent unemployment have become a hope to cover the needs of qualified staff for the administrations. The Chamber President Akif Arıcan maintained they worked very hard to enliven the economic life of our town

and carried out the substructure projects to extend tourism season from 3-4 months to 12 months. Arıcan stated despite the high touristic potential of our region, tourism season lasted very short and it affected the economic and social life of our town badly: “When we consider the opportunities of our town, tourism lasts not for 3-4 months but for 12 months. We should work hard to carry it out. As the Chamber, we are ready to do everything we should do at this platform.”

The Tender of the Shopping Centre Made

The tender of the shopping centre which is one of the municipality projects which is aimed to be carried out in Fethiye and got the most votes at the poll has been carried out. Eroğlu Construction Building and Real Estate Developing Industry and Commerce Limited Company has become the only firm that has attended the tender of the shopping centre to be built in build operate transfer model. The shopping centre is estimated to be completed and opened in a year. The project for the shopping and living centre had been completed in the place of the wholesale market. The shopping centre mostly seen in big cities will be

built for all purposes. As one of the most significant projects in Fethiye so far, the shopping and living centre will not only be a shopping centre but also be a living area. The project has been chosen among 109 projects nationwide and will also have an amphitheatre, movie theatres and concert halls. With the moving of the wholesale market, the demolition works have started at the area. No participations had been made concerning the project at the first two tenders. Eroğlu Construction Building and Real Estate Developing Industry and Commerce Limited Company atten-

ded the third tender and took over the project with build operate transfer model for 30 years and the Municipality is to gain 1.250.000.00 TL annually every year. After the tender has been finalized and the contract has been signed, the annual tender cost of the shopping centre is to be paid to the Municipality. So the contractor company has to complete the project and open it as soon as possible. “We Are True to Our Words” Fethiye Mayor Behçet Saatçi gave information to the press members after the tender: “One firm has demanded the project. We are checking the file. We

have not confirmed the tender yet. There is a waiting period and we will consider it in that period. We will make assessments according to the process. It is going to be built with build operate transfer model for 30 years. The income to our municipality is 1.250.000TL. This project is also going to bring great contribution to the construction sector in Fethiye.” The Mayor answered the questions about the reactions of the opposition parties against the shopping centre project: “You keep making us repeat the same things. We are carrying out a significant project for Fethiye as a municipality. If there is a penalty, we will pay it. We are true in our words.”

As a result of the projects started with bringing Muğla University and industrialists together, growing products in good quality and making use of new technologies, one of the 3 technoparks to be opened in Muğla is being opened in our town with the initiatives of Fethiye Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The Chamber President Akif Arıcan has been making great efforts to open this technopark in Fethiye in one year because of the fact that the university in Muğla is far from our town, which prevents information sharing despite the high commercial potential of our town. The technoparks are defined as a

Taxi Stations Phone Number

system enabling big and small companies that have proven themselves in their area and created a satisfactory environment for inventors so that they can be successful to come together at this nice living area, providing cooperation between industrial and public institutions and the university and have been open in several regions since 2001. It is indicated that the technopark which makes the university and industry meet and conveys technology and information into the business life will bring great contribution in solving several agricultural production and tourism problems in our town. Researches will be made in

order to increase the quality and productions of the demanded products for export. In this aspect, companies who do not spend money to Ar-Ge will have significant advantages. While the land survey for technopark carries on, the area next to Hal Birliği in Karaçulha is planned. Technoparks will be opened in Muğla, Bodrum and Fethiye in the presidency of Muğla Governor Fatih Şahin and the secretariat of Muğla University. The Chamber President Akif Arıcan, the staff from Muğla University and the Survey Engineer Ercan Çınaroğlu paid a visit to Fethiye District Governor Ekrem Çalık and conveyed information. The Cham-

ber President Akif Arıcan who is also at the founding board of the technopark project stated the opening of the technopark which was to enable the information to meet the industry would be very important for our town and facilities should have done their duties to open Fethiye Technopark as soon as possible. Fethiye District Governor Ekrem Çalık maintained Muğla and university was far from Fethiye so the technopark would bring great opportunities when we considered this. Çalık said the technopark would bring a lot of innovations in our town and make the information and technology meet the business world.

Your Crazy Horoscope For two weeks starting 29th April By Very Mystic Blodweudd Well: I went to see the Governor and demanded to consult with a lawyer. He arranged for an interview with a local chap who gets paid by The Prison Service and he seemed very nice. I told him that they were going to deport me which can't be legal as I'm a British citizen. At first he agreed with me but after looking through my file he said that the police had searched my belongings and found my Indian passport so are deporting me as an illegal immigrant. I told him that the Indian passport is a forgery and that they must have found my British or Dutch

passport. Well, it seems the police didn't and they insist that the Indian one is genuine. I told him that it's a stitch-up just because the police station had burned down after the riot. Aquarius: Aquarians often have a short temper. If you are such a person I suggest that you stay out of pubs to avoid conflicts. Double Aquarian marriages are not advised and Aquarian ladies should try not to have Aquarian babies. Pisces: You lot are a bit extreme so very difficult to predict. Justin Bieber and Barbie [Doll] are very similar but they are nothing like Fats

Domino. You could be promoted but you could be sacked, you could meet a tall dark stranger or a little bald dwarf. Taurus: You poor people are in for a miserable week. It might be a good idea to stay in bed this coming week and don't answer the phone either. The following week should be better and you can risk going out and looking for a new job. Gemini: “Moan o'er December, cry before June”. I think it's worth remembering that as you try to better yourself against all odds. Try to see yourself as others do and you might reach the

conclusion that you're wasting your time. Don't be downhearted though, take to drink perhaps? Drugs? There are many happy drunks and addicts. Cancer: A lot of Cancer people are bored so this week could be your chance to overcome boredom. Try running down the street naked and shouting something ridiculous like “Scargill for president”. Leo: Men really must get to grips with tidying the tool shed and women the cupboard under the sink. I know I'm wasting my time telling teenagers what to tidy so just go out and enjoy yourselves kids. Virgo: It is estimated that some ten percent of Virgos are in fact virgins, and remaining 90 percent are not. Of the ninety percent one third are extremely notvirgins.

Libra: I was doing my astral projection last Friday night smoking my hubble-bubble when I saw a white horse gallop across your constellation. That could mean either that you will have your Lloyds Bank credit card stopped or you could be trampled by a white horse. Bunny: Be wary of someone offering a helping hand. The good news though was that they let me change my name so that the Turkish police and the Greek Intelligence Service couldn't victimise me again. Of course I can't reveal my new name here in case the Holiday Company's mafia black-list me. So, here I am back on the Turkish Riviera looking for a job. I think the best job I had here was as a rep' so I'll try that again. I'll have to put a few kilos on of course because most companies only make the uniforms in the larger sizes.

Dear British Residents,

Important changes to consular registration British Consular Services in Turkey would like to inform you that our LOCATE online consular registration system will be closed down on 14 May. The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) is committed to providing British nationals with a modern and efficient consular service and this decision is part of a programme of work to transform our crisis response. Until now the FCO has been encouraging British nationals to register their details with the FCO 'just in case' of an emergency. In February 2013 there were approximately 43,000 Locate registrants, representing 1% of British Nationals resident overseas and a fraction of British travellers. Despite technical upgrades and marketing efforts, the level of registration remains extremely low. As people do not sign up in large numbers LOCATE does not provide an accurate picture of numbers of British nationals in crisis-affected countries and is an ineffective crisis response tool. Following the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan in 2011, the FCO contacted all 3000 LOCATE registrants in the country. None required our assistance. Here in Turkey only 365 have registered out of an estimated 40.000 of British nationals in Turkey. Travellers and residents in Turkey will no longer be able to preregister on a 'just in case' basis. I would like to reassure you that British nationals will continue to receive the same level of consular support while in Turkey and will still be able to log their details with the FCO if they are affected by a crisis and need help. Depending on the nature of a crisis, we may open a telephone hotline and a new +44 SMS service. For the latest travel and security news British nationals should: - Read our travel advice for Turkey and subscribe to receive updates via email. We will communicate all travel and security information via our travel advice, so this is the best way for British nationals to stay informed. https://www.gov.uk/foreign-traveladvice/turkey - Follow updated Turkey travel advice on Twitter (www.twitter.com/ukinturkey ) and Facebook (www.facebook.com/ukinturkey) As we are prone to natural disasters(like earthquakes) here in Turkey British nationals are also encouraged to read some new FCO guidance on precautions to take if they are travelling to or resident in areas where a crisis may occur: https://www.gov.uk/how-to-deal-with-a-crisisoverseas We appreciate that technology may fail in some crises and in these cases we can revert to pushing out information via more traditional means, for example warden networks, local radio stations, using posters on community notice boards. NASA sees distant planets that seem ideal for life

NASA's planet-hunting telescope has discovered two planets that seem like ideal places for some sort of life to flourish. And they are just the right size and in just the right place. One is warm, the other chilly. The distant duo are the best candidates for habitable planets that astronomers have found so far, said William Borucki, the chief scientist for NASA's Kepler telescope. And it has got astronomers thinking that similar planets that are just about right for life -"Goldilocks planets" -- might be common in the universe. The discoveries, published online Thursday in the journal Science, mark a milestone in the search for planets where life could exist. In the four years that Kepler has been trailing Earth's orbit, the telescope has found 122 exoplanets planets outside our solar system. In the past, those planets haven't fit all the criteria that would make them right for life of any kind from microbes to man. Many planets aren't in the habitable zone - where it's not too hot and not too cold for liquid water. And until now, the few found in that ideal zone, were just too big. Those are likely to be gas balls like Neptune and that's not suitable for life. Similarly, any Earth-size planets weren't in the right place near their stars, Borucki said. In the Goldilocks game of looking for other planets like ours, the new discoveries, called Kepler-62-e and Kepler-62-f are just right. And they are fraternal twins. They circle the same star, an orange dwarf, and are next to each other -- closer together than Earth and its neighbor Mars. The planets are slightly wider than Earth, but not too big. Kepler-62-e is a bit balmy, like a Hawaiian world and Kepler-62-f is a bit frosty, more Alaskan, Borucki said. The pair is 1,200 lightyears away; a light-year is almost 6 trillion miles (nearly 10 trillion kilometers). "This is the first one where I'm thinking 'Huh, Kepler-62f really might have life on it'," said study co-author David Charbonneau of Harvard.

"This is a very important barrier that's been crossed. Why wouldn't it have life?" To make it warm enough for life the planet would need greenhouse gas trapping its star's heat because the star only gives off one-fifth the energy of our sun, but that's something that is likely to happen, Borucki said. Both planets are tantalizing. The dozens of researchers who co-authored the study disagree on which one is better suited to life. Lisa Kaltenegger of the Max Planck Institute of Astronomy in Germany likes Kepler-62-e more because it's closer to the star and is warmer. She said it is probably "like Washington in May." That planet is so close it may need clouds to cool off and it's more likely to be an all-water world, unlike any other in our solar system, Kaltenegger said. Astronomers cannot confirm that either planet has water, but based on other research, it's a good assumption, she said.

The planets circle a star that is 7 billion years old about 2.5 billion years older than our sun. Kepler spots the planets as they go between Earth and their star ever so slightly, reducing the light from the star. "If there's life at all on those planets, it must be very advanced" evolutionarily because the planets are so old, said Borucki. On a watery planet, oceans are prime spots for life, including flying fish that could evolve into birds, Borucki said. And on the rocky planet, with a heavier gravity than Earth, life might look a tad different, he said. In another study also published by some of the same authors in Astrophysical Journal, the astronomers found a different set of planets that are slightly bigger, but probably not gas giants, and circle a star that more resembles our sun. One of those planets is on edge of the habitable zone maybe in, maybe out - and could be considered a potential third good place for

a habitable zone, said Thomas Barclay of NASA's Ames Research Center, which runs the Kepler telescope. All told, researchers announced seven new exoplanets on Thursday, upping the grand total found so far by Kepler and Earthbound telescopes to about 850, according to NASA. Pennsylvania State University professor James Kasting called the findings "a big discovery." Kasting and Sara Seager of MIT, who weren't part of the research, pointed out that Kepler's job is to look at one distant corner of the sky and to find what fraction of stars seemed to have the right sized planets in the habitable zone. "This is HUGE," Seager wrote in an email. "Do you realize that as soon as Kepler could find close-toEarth-size planets in the habitable zone of sun-like stars, Kepler found it. Goldilocks planets must be everywhere." Resource: Today's Zaman

Papa Bartholemew Returns to Kayakoy

His Holiness Barthol e m e w, E c u m e n i c a l Patriach of Constantinople paid an unofficial and unannounced return to Kayakoy on the evening of 10th April. Accompanied by a retinue of friends and fellow Metropolitans of the Greek Orthodox Church he walked the steep rocky path up to the church Taksiarkis where he offered prayers. The small group, accompanied by members of the press then walked through the ruins of the

deserted village down to the lower church Katopanaia and said a prayer at the ossuary where bones of the long dead Christian villagers still lie ninety years after the departure of their families and friends as part of the population exchange agreed by treaty in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1923. Nearby the ossuary stands an orange tree now nearing blossom but badly damaged by the recent storms and from which His Holiness pluc-

ked a small sprig. Still holding the sprig he then walked to the Antik restaurant and surprised all by browsing through the boutique in which local seamstress Rahsan Ertalay displays her wares. His Holiness had previously visited Kayakoy some ten years earlier and had conducted a service of consecration in the lower church and had resided overnight in Kinali village.

Parachute Pilot Flies a Dog in Nepal

After the closing of paragliding season in Fethiye, 28 year old paragliding pilot Hakan Akdere went to Nepal and made his Australian client Yohan Mori and his dog Tw i k s e e e n j o y t h e paragliding. The jump at Pokhara of Nepal was carried out from the 1600 high Sarangkot Hill at the foothills of Himalaya on March 20. After the closing of paragliding season in Fethiye, 28 year old paragliding pilot Hakan Akdere went to Nepal and accepted the flight offer of Australian

Yohan Mori with his dog. 1.5 year old “Irish wolfhound” which was found in the forest area in the foothills of Himalayas and domesticated while it was a puppy enjoyed paragliding with its owner Yohan Mori and pilot Hakan Akdere. THE FEAR OF THE DOG NOT LAST LONG The flight over Pewa Lake of Pokhara lasted nearly 20 minutes. Twiksee was very scared of flying at the first minutes of the flight but then it started watching the sky and the view.

Twiksee was roped up with special equipments to the parachute against the danger of falling and its owner hugged it. 'ON CONDITION NOT TO PUT ANIMALS IN DANGER' Hakan Akdere told the details on his return to Turkey and said it was quite an experience to fly a dog. Akdere explained he accepted the offers of his clients on condition not to put animals in danger and the flight was quite safe both for his client and his dog.

Severe Storm Damages Administrations

The severe storm blowing in Fethiye Centrum and villages had a strong effect especially in Kayaköy on April 7, Sunday. The high wind blew a terrace roof in Levissi Garden in Kayaköy. As there were no customers at that time, no one injured or died. Parked cars have been damaged by the falling pieces from the roof. Hakan who has been the manager of Levissi Garden since 2006 said, “We were dealing with our

customers as usual on Sunday. When the wind started blowing, we took our customers to inside, but at that moment the wind got higher and blew our roof terrace away so our customers panicked a lot. Cars in the restaurant park have been damaged. Our only consolation is there is no loss of life. The audio systems, light systems, tables, chairs and service sets on our terrace have become unusable now and our loss is above 20 thousand

TL.” Ms. Meltem who was at the restaurant that day explained, “We were sitting at the terrace. The wind started blowing too much so we went inside. Everything happened at that moment. The wind got higher and blew the roof away. We were inside thankfully; otherwise there would be losses of life. Cars in the car park were damaged but it is vital that there is no loss of life. I hope Hakan will get better soon.”

How to Make Your Own Cat Food With multinational companies like Purina mass producing cheap cat food in places like China, where controls are limited even for products meant for human consumption, many people are beginning to go back to the basics for their pets. If you would like to surprise your kitty with a wonderful treat, or even transition entirely to homemade kitty food, consider these guidelines, recipes, books and websites as a starting point. Ingredients to Avoid As tasty as a chocolatecovered mouse may sound, this is definitely a no-no for kitty. Chocolate, in general aggravates the tummies of many of our animal companions, not just cats. Some other ingredients to avoid in homemade cat food include: Garlic Onions Raisins Raw Egg whites Tomatoes Grapes While the above ingredients must be avoided, any regular cat food diet must also include a number of ingredients, but especially animal protein. You may be okay being vegan, but your cat certainly will not thrive on a diet of tempeh and tofu! Your cat is a carnivore and there is no way around this evolutionary fact. Cats need between 60% and 80% meat protein in order to acquire enough essential amino acids such as taurine, arginine, lysine and cysteine. Not getting enough taurine, for example, will make your kitty blind. The Essentials Animal Protein: The protein in your cat's diet should come from chicken (or other poultry), beef, pork, rabbit, fish or liver. Liver is especially important because it is chock-full of Vitamin A and cats cannot produce this vitamin on their own. Variety is important, so you should not just feed your cat liver or straight fish on a daily basis. The other essential ingredients include: Animal Fats: Not only does animal fat make food tastier, this essential ingredients is also mandatory for healthy skin and fur, as

well the circulatory and urinary systems. Kittens need about 35% fat while adult cats thrive on a diet of about 30% fat. Calcium to Phosphorus Ratio (Ca:P): The ratio between calcium and phosphorus should be 1 part calcium to to 1.3 parts phosphorus. The easiest way to accomplish this ratio is to add calcium supplements. Commercial cat food usually uses bone meal. If you choose to use bone meal only use a product meant for human consumption, not one intended for gardening. Water: Homemade cat food will ideally be 10% to 30% water weight. Carbs: All good recipes for felines should contain less than 10% carbs. Basic Cat Food from Ecolife: A guide to Green living 1/4 teaspoon olive oil or salmon oil 2.7 grams of feline vitamin/mineral supplement 30 grams of potato, cooked without skin 50 grams of carbs (choose one: cooked pasta, white rice, barley, oatmeal, peas) 83 grams of cooked animal protein (whole meat chicken, lamb, rabbit, beef, pork, tuna, salmon) Mix all of the ingredients together (a blender works really well for this purpose) and store the food in the fridge until needed. ———– Tuna Patties from Healthy Recipes for Pets 1 can tuna 1/2 cup boiled rice 1/4 cup pureed liver 2-3 sprigs parsley chopped Drain the tuna and mix e v e r y t h i n g t o g e t h e r. Make 6-7 balls and then pat them into patties. Store in the fridge and

serve to your cat. This is one cat treat recipe that your feline friend won't be finicky about. ———– Rabbit Stew from the book Natural Cat Care by Christopher Day: This meal is also good enough for human consumption. So get out two plates, for kitty and you. Rabbit meat (wild or domestic), boned and cut into small pieces A little olive oil A few springs of parsley, rosemary, marjoram and thyme Vegetable stock (unsalted, so best home prepared) Sweet potato, carrot, celery, leek, turnip, peas Sautee the rabbit chunks in the olive oil. Sprinkle with herbs. Add the stock water and bring to a boil. Cover with lid and place in a mediumlow oven until cooked through. Add the chopped vegetable and peas and return to the oven for a another 45 minutes. Let cool, then give to kitty. ———– Salmon Delight from LovetoKnowCats 1 can salmon (or fresh salmon) 1 tablespoon cooked, mashed broccoli 1/4 cup whole wheat bread crumbs 1 teaspoon brewer's yeast Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Stir together and serve. Keep any leftovers refrigerated, and discard after three days. ———– Sardine Treat also from Loveto Know Cats 1 can sardines in oil 2 tablespoons of grated carrot 1/3 cup cooked oatmeal Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Mash ingredients together and serve. Store leftovers in the refrigerator, and discard after three days. Bon Appetite!

Tourism Season to be Extended with Lycian Way

14 Healthy Reasons to Eat Kiw

Fethiye Chamber of Commerce and Industry has organized the Lycian Ways project for the second time and the success is almost near. In previous meetings, the information about destinations had been given and several suggestions had been made. At the second meeting, tourism administrators and guides were given information and their suggestions were asked. Attendants were given leaflets about walking tracks in Fethiye. The brochure presents information about walking tracks, alternative roads and events as well as

routes, cycling tracks, culture roads, adventure roads, jeep safari, bird observation and many other titles. Tourism administrators, The Ministry of Culture and Tourism Cultural Values General Assistant Director Serhat Akcan, Ece Yiğit from Foreign Affairs and European Union Chamber Presidency, Kate Claw who discovered the Lycian Way attended the meeting and gave information about the project. Fethiye Chamber of Commerce and Industry General Secretary Füsun Şahin stated they worked hard

for Fethiye walking tracks and alternative tourism events as the Chamber so that they could extend tourism season to the whole year and said, “We are doing as best as we can to extend tourism season and find new suggestions as a Chamber.” Ece Yiğit said, “Our Ministry receives demands about cultural roads and routes. If we carry out these projects, it becomes difficult to sustain them for us. They must be sustained in a local aspect. Walking routes are also in the branded culture options of Fethiye. Culture indust-

ries spread very fast in the whole world. As Turkey, we should take our place as well. Everyone should work hard to do this.” British Kate Claw who had discovered the Lycian Way explained, “I have travelled through the villages, beaches, mountains in Turkey regularly. I have accommodated in tents, caves and barns. I have walked on the historical Lycian Way in 1988 for the first time. The hospitality of Turkish people was perfect.”

Tlos Antique Town Visited at Lycian Trip This Time

Lycia Art and Literature Group visited Tlos this time for their trip to history. The theatre, rock tombs and other historical places at Tlos Antique Town in Yaka Village of Kayaköy were told by the

guide Birol Ganioğlu. Documentaries were shot at the trip full of historical and mythological information. The trip went in a picnic atmosphere and after the history of the antique theatre was told,

an essay of Nurcan Gökmen was read while the poet Emine Çakır shared one of her poems. Beside the historical places, the 35 people group had a break at Yaka Park and enjoyed resting

at this natural environment which is visited by many tourists. The next trip of the group will be carried out to Xhantos which is one of the significant towns of Lycian Civilization.

People are attracted to kiwifruit because of its brilliant green color and exotic taste. But, the real uniqueness of kiwi fruit comes from its health benefits. Read the kiwi's fourteen health benefits, interesting facts, and how to use this amazing powerfood. 14 Health Benefits 1. Helps Your Digestions with Enzymes Raw kiwi contains actinidain, a protein-dissolving enzyme that can help digest a meal much like the papain in papaya or bromelain in pineapple. 2. Helps Manage Blood Pressure Kiwi's high level of potassium helps keep our electrolytes in balance by counteracting the effects of sodium. 3. Protects from DNA Damage A study by Collins, Horska and Hotten showed that the unique combination of antioxidants in Kiwi fruit helps protect the cell DNA from oxidative damage. Some experts conclude this can help prevent cancer. 4. Boosts Your Immunity Kiwi's high vitamin C content along with other antioxidant compounds has been proven to boost the immune system. 5. Smart Carb for Weight Loss Kiwi's low glycemic index and high fiber content means it will not create a strong insulin rush like other fruit with high sugar contents — so the body will not respond by storing fat. 6. Improves Digestive Health Kiwis are a great source of f i b e r. T h i s p r e v e n t s constipation and other intestinal problems. 7. Helps Clean Out Toxins The fuzzy fiber of Kiwi helps bind and move toxins from your intestinal tract. 8. Helps Fight Heart Disease Eating 2-3 kiwis a day has been shown to reduce the potential of blood clotting by 18% and reduce triglycerides by 15%. Many individuals take aspirin to reduce blood clotting, but this causes many side effects including inflammation and intestinal bleeding. Kiwi fruit has the same anti-clotting benefits with no side effects, just additional health benefits!

9. Suitable For Diabetics Kiwi is in the 'low' category for glycemic index, meaning it does not raise your blood sugar quickly. It has a glycemic load of 4 which means it is safe for diabetics. 10. Protects Against Macular Degeneration and Other Eye Problems Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss in older adults. A study on over 110,000 men and women showed that eating 3 or more serving of fruit per day decreased macular degeneration by 36%. This is thought to be associated with the kiwi's high levels of lutein and zeaxanthin — both of which are natural chemicals found in the human eye. Although both fruits and vegetables were studied, this same effect was not shown for vegetables. 11. Create Alkaline Balance Kiwi is in the 'most alkaline' category for fruits, meaning it has a rich supply of minerals to replace the excess of acidic foods most individuals consume. A few of the benefits of a properly acid/alkaline balanced body are: youthful skin, deeper sleep, abundant physical energy, fewer colds, less arthritis, and reduced osteoporosis. 12. Great for the Skin Kiwis are a good source of vitamin E, an antioxidant known to protect skin from degeneration. 13. Exotic Taste and Look for Food Variety Kiwis look and taste great. Kids often love them because they are so different from most fruits. For nutritional balance it is always good to eat a variety of foods. Each food has its own unique qualities and powers. The trouble with most people's diet is that we eat such a limited number of foods. It increases our chances of not getting enough of important nutrients. 14. Naturally Organic Kiwi fruit is on the list of foods that are generally safe from a lot of pesticide residues. For 2012 it came in with the top 10 safest foods. While it is always good to support organic when you can as a matter of principle, it's also good to know whether there is a big danger if organic is not available or viable for you.

Candidates to be announced in September at the Republican People's Party legislations, we are going to announce our candidates for mayors 6 months before the elections in places where we have no mayors and at the last 3 months before the elections where we have mayors. On the other hand, the candidates for nomination do

Muğla Congressman Nurettin Demir, Provincial Director Mustafa Öztürk, District President Emrah Doğu, Ölüdeniz Mayor Keramettin Yılmaz, Seki Mayor Veli Yıldız and many party representatives attended the meeting of the Republican People's Party. There was a stampede at the meeting due to great attendance and party members looked forward to the future projects to be carried out within the next

days. District President Emrah Doğu said he was very delighted to see this great attendance and the Congressman Nurettin Demir made a speech. Demir maintained they saw the oppressive attitude of the government party especially in Şanlıurfa and there was 4 times more pressure in Muğla than that region: “People are scared. They told us so many things that they check around themselves when talking.

There is discrimination between the ones from the Justice and Development Party and the ones who do not support the Justice and Development Party. Girls are sent to schools with headscarves in the Southeast. We know that Syrians whose number is claimed to be 500 thousand in Fethiye will come to Muğla, so will their 15 thousand containers. It is obvious how Syrians have affected the social life in Şanlıurfa.

Kayaköy To be introduced to tourism

Arrangements have been started for the renovations in Kayaköy, the former name is Levissi, which attracts attention with the unique view and stone houses abandoned by Greeks to introduce it to tourism. Muğla Governor Fatih Şahin explained ar-

rangements were made to reveal the values which had not yet been turned into commercial products and stated Kayaköy was to be allocated to local and foreign investors for touristic investments by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in this aspect. It was

accepted that the immobile proper-ties in Kayaköy regis-tered in the boun-daries of the 1st Degree Archaeological and Urban Protection Area, the 2 nd Degree Natural Protection Area and the 3rd Degree Archaeological Protection Area will be allocated

to investors for 49 years by the Ministry of Finance for the purpose of using as special accommodation facilities. LOW MAINTENANCE GARDENS

If you are tired of dead heading, watering every single day, weeding and insectising istead of sitting on your veranda and having a cup of tea enjoying your garden, then you might be interested in this topic.

Most of us want to see our gardens green and colourfull. But to maintain a lawn in Fethiye is not very easy.Especially in the middle of summer when its over 35 C. No body wants to do weeding in those hot weathers.Unless you have someone to look after your garden for you. Well if you don't have anyone and you are tired of gardening then you might want to simplify your garden a bit. Instead of a big lawn you can have white stones with a liner underneath (the cheapest option). If you don't like the idea of stones then you can either have a decking where you can have your dining table and chairs or maybe a crazy paving. But these options are a lot more expensive than stones.

They Return with Medals What plants to choose Evergreen, non flowering plants, grasses, herbs and arid plants are usually easy to maintain. Screening; pittosporums, oleanders, viburnums, photinias are evergreen easy maintaining screening plants. Not much watering is necessary,no flowers apart from oleanders so no dead headings. And you don't need to dead head oleanders also. Cyclists thanked Mayor Keramettin Yılmaz for his supports. Cyclists who are the members of Fethiye Cycling and Nature Sports Club have returned from races in Alanya with medals.

The club president Julien Romeo Arama stated they were very happy that all the cyclists from Fethiye ranked at the first 25 from the 6th degree and thanked Ölüdeniz Mayor Keramettin Yıl-

maz for his supports on this success. Mayor Yılmaz stated he was delighted that cyclists from Fethiye returned with medals and said, “Our cyclists do not only represent Fethiye but also repre-

sent the entire Muğla. So their success is significant for the entire region. We will keep supporting them. I hope they will bring great successes in the next races as well.”

Grasses; Festuca glauca, carex, cortaderia and pennisetums are also suitable for low maintenance gardens. You just water them regularly no dead heading,no pruning! They all have nice foliage, especially the red pennisetums are giving a really nice contrast effect in white stones. Arid plants ; All cacties and succulents are suitable for your low maintenance garden.Agaves, aloe vera family, echeverias, opuntias, echinocactus are some of them. You don't even need to water these.Even if you go away for a month in summer time, when you come back home you can find them alive and healthy. Flowering shrubs; Hibiscus, solanums, euryops, durantas are flowering small shrubs. They again don't need dead heading every day and good with the dryness. For the spring and summer season there are a lot of choices of pot plants. Most of them are not very easy to maintain but I can recommend some options for full sun and half shade. Full sun; Pelargoniums, petunias, geraniums, osteospermums do well in full sun. Half shade; Daisies, verbenas, dahlias.

The best of Anatolia's Phrygian sites

Sun Express 29 April - 12 May 2013

Of the many peoples who have inhabited Anatolia in the pre-GrecoRoman period the best known are probably the Hittites whose ancient capital, at Hattuşa, is now one of Turkey's world heritage sites. Not quite so well known are the Phrygians who took over power from them in much of Central Anatolia from the 12th century B.C. onwards. Indo-Europeans who probably first emerged in the Balkans, the Phrygians may have been included amongst the mysterious “Sea Peoples” who are thought to have overwhelmed the Hittites. Alternatively, they may just have stepped into the void created by the collapse of the Hittite Empire. The full story is yet to be told. The Phrygians made their capital at Gordion, near the small modern town of Polatlı, but their influence extended across much of Anatolia. To the east they rubbed up against the Urartians, to the west against the Ly d i a n s i n t o w h o s e kingdom they were eventually absorbed. The independent Phrygian state is thought to have come to an end around 675 B.C. when invading Cimmerians are believed to have destroyed Gordion. In their heyday the Phrygians had their own language (which may have survived into the A.D. seventh century), their own style of dress typified by a floppy Phrygian cap, and their own pantheon of gods and goddesses, amongst whom Kybele, the Mother Goddess, held such importance that the Greeks later identified her with their Artemis. Several famous stories, mostly mythical, are associated with Phrygia. The first concerns King Midas who is said to have prayed that everything he touched would turn to gold, forgetting that this would include his food, his drink, and even his daughter. In despair Midas prayed to be relieved of his gift and

was instructed by the god Dionysius to wash in the Pactolus (Sart Çayı) river. As soon as he did this, the gift passed to the water, thus supposedly explaining the gold that was later found in the river. A second story tells how King Midas was one of the adjudicators at a musical competition between the gods Pan and Apollo. When the king was foolish enough to prefer Pan's pipes to Apollo's lyre, Apollo took his revenge by giving him donkey's ears. From then on the king kept his head covered to conceal his disgrace. Only his barber got to see the shameful ears and eventually, unable to keep the secret any longer, he rushed down to the river, dug a hole and whispered into it that “King Midas has ass's ears.” Of course the reeds that grew up on the spot have been whispering the same story as the wind whistles through them ever since. Finally, Gordion itself was associated with a much later story relating to Alexander the Great who passed through in 333 B.C. by which time the old Phrygia had become a satrapy (province) of Persia. In the old palace he found an oxcart that had originally been brought into town by a peasant named Gordias whom an oracle had decreed should be the next king of Phrygia. The cart was secured with a knot and it was said that whoever eventually untied it would go on to become the ruler of all Asia. No more able to unknot it than anybody else, Alexander solved the problem by slicing through it with his sword. The rest, as they say, is history. For those looking for reminders of the Phrygians the first stop has to be Gordion, but almost equally interesting, if much less visited, is the small town of Midas Şehri, near Afyon. In the surrounding Phrygian Valleys (Frig Vadisi) there are many small reminders of the Phrygians. Finally, it's worth paying a quick

visit to Pessinus, a minor archeological site near Sivrihisar that also dates back to Phrygian times. The most important finds from Gordion, including some magnificent metalwork, are housed in the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in Ankara. Unfortunately most of this will be closed for restoration throughout 2013. Gordion The ancient Phrygian capital of Gordion can be found around the village of Yassıhöyük, southwest of Ankara, where there are two completely separate areas of interest. Most people are drawn like magnets to an enormous tumulus -- the largest of more than 100 in the area -- which was once thought to contain the grave of the famous King Midas. Excavated in 1957, it turned out to contain a wood-lined burial chamber full of grave goods as well as the skeleton of a man of about 60, now thought to have been Midas' father, Gordias. It's astonishing to be able to walk right inside a monument that dates back more than 2,700 years, and afterwards the small museum across the road can come as something of an anticlimax although it does contain some remarkable painted gable ends as well as a pebble-mosaic of a type that can also be seen in Greek Macedonia and that continued to be produced all along the Aegean well into modern times. The actual site of the city of Gordion is roughly two kilometers east of the tumulus. Recent digs have uncovered two citadels, one built on top of the other, as well as several megara, or great halls. A gateway has been re-erected to its original height, giving some idea of what an impressive city this must once been. Midas Şehri Far fewer people make it to the remote site of Midas Şehri, north of

Afyon, although those who do are rewarded by a sight that is, if anything, even more visually striking than the tumulus at Gordion. Here, behind the modern village of Yazılıkaya, a huge monument resembling the facade of a temple is carved into the face of a rock. Known as the Tomb of Midas by those who were determined to find the last resting place of the famous king, it is now believed to have been a shrine to Kybele with a space carved into it for a statue of the goddess. The monument is by far the most striking sight at Midas Şehri. However, there was once a whole Phrygian city dating back to the eighth century BC here, and if you walk round behind the monument you will be able to climb up onto its acropolis and explore many ancient tombs, cisterns, fountains and other structures that have yet to be conclusively identified. Frig Vadisi (Phrygian Valley) You really need a car to explore the valleys that surround Midas Şehri and which contain a number of tombs mainly dating back to the late Phrygian period when Phrygia was absorbed into the Lydian kingdom. Although the posting of signs has been greatly improved recently, it still takes quite lot of time to find everything. The most detailed information on the area was provided by the Dutch archeologist Emilie Haspels in a book called The Highlands of Phrygia, published in 1971. Near the village of Döğer northeast of İhsaniye, for example, you

can visit the Arslan-kaya (Lion Rock), a smaller version of the monument at Midas Şehri, again carved to look like a temple and with a relief of Kybele and two lions inside it. This should not be confused with the Arslantaş (Lion Stone) in the nearby Köhnüş valley where the façade of a tomb is carved with impressive representations of lions. Somewhat confusingly, the nearby Yılantaş (Snake Stone) turns out to be yet another tomb with lions on its façade. Finally, in the village of Kümbet, near Midas Şehri, the Arslan Kaplan Kümbet (Lion and Tiger Tomb) is yet another late Phrygian tomb, this time embellished with carvings of bulls. It probably acquired its name when lion carvings were added to it in Roman times. Pessinus Finally, it's worth paying a quick visit to the ruins of the Phrygian settlement of Pessinus which are scattered about the village of Ballıhisar southeast of Sivrihisar. The Heart of Pessinus was originally a temple to the hermaphroditic god, Agdistis, who was eventually assimilated, somewhat confusingly, into the cult of Kybele as a goddess. Pessinus lived on after the Phrygians to flourish first as a Celtic settlement, then as a Hellenistic one, then finally as a Roman city. Consequently, although the memory of the Phrygians lives on in the ruins of the temple to Kybele most of what is to be seen here now is of a much later date. Resource: Today's Zaman

What to bring back from Antep?

One cannot visit Gaziantep and return emptyhanded, and that is why we've compiled a list of gifts that would be wise to bring back after a trip to this southeastern Turkish city. The list includes copperware, items inlaid with mother of pearl, and of course, some of those famous Antep flavors. 1. In the markets of Gaziantep, you can find all sorts of copper “cezve” (traditional little longhandled pots for making Turkish coffee), pots and pans, samovars and other accessories. All of the items you can find here are handcrafted, and you will often find that as you make your purchases you will hear the sounds of hammers pounding copper and other metals in the background. 2. You can find “kutnu” (a fabric made from cotton or a blend of cotton and silk) almost everywhere. In fact, some of the shops in the historic marketplace in Gaziantep are devoted to this special kind of Ottoman fabric. There are the more classic kutnu colors, like red, yellow and green, as well as dark blues, deep olive green, pomegranate flower red and so on. The most important point in purchasing kutnu is to make sure it was handmade. If threads are not hanging from both edges of the fabric, it was likely handmade. 3. These days, Antep residents are busy researching how they can produce greener pistachios. But we think the most important factor is their taste, and of course that their shells be slightly open, that they be full and that they be salted perfectly. Pistachio growers say it is the soil that these nuts grow in that determines their true taste. But no matter the real reason behind their flavor, you will definitely regret it if you don't purchase pistachios when you visit Gaziantep. The price generally ranges between TL 20-25 per kilo. 4. Gaziantep is also famous for its desserts, with many of its sweets shops expanding and becoming well-known brands. It doesn't matter which one you go into, though, the baklava around here is

always absolutely delicious. Since baklava without syrup on it stays fresher longer, it's a good idea to purchase a few packages to give as gifts. Don't forget to heat lightly before eating. In Gaziantep, people eat baklava warm. Spices galore 5. Sumac, hot pepper, red pepper, black pepper, cumin, mint, oregano and many other spices are abundant in Antep. The streets of Antep offer up the aromas of all these spices and more. We don't know if it's because of the air or the water, but whatever it is, the spices here smell different than in other places. The shop owners trust the quality of their spices so much that they never sell them without first urging customers to taste them. And once you taste them, it's impossible not to buy. Don't forget to get some for the kitchens of your loved ones while getting

some for yourself. 6. Since the weather is so hot and dry here, in the summertime especially, you can dry every kind of fruit and vegetable you want. And in fact, dried vegetables and fruit occupy a very important spot in the food culture of this city, which is why you can find them everywhere. Some of the top sellers in this category are eggplant, squash, grapes and apples. Another note: Grapes are very popular in the city as well with grape vines being everywhere. 7. You can find all sorts of beautiful decorative items for your home in the historic markets here like chests, tables, chairs and trays all inlaid with mother of pearl. Keep in mind that some of the pieces that require more handiwork can be quite expensive. For example, you might pay around TL 2,500 for a coffee table and two chairs. 8. Silverwork is also quite widespread as a craft throughout Gaziantep. Some of the ancient silver pieces dug out from the ancient sites of Karkamış, Dülük and Belkıs have inspired the basis for silverwork in Gaziantep. And in fact, silverwork spread more widely throughout Ana-

tolia with the spread of Islam. Silver trays, teacups and saucers make for some of the most perfect gifts imaginable from Antep. 9. The kilims (flat weave carpets) from Antep aren't so different from those in other Anatolian cities, but if you are someone who loves collecting kilims, you might want to pick up a few pieces from here. There are a whole range of motifs particular to Antep and the region surrounding it that you will find woven into the kilims from this area. 10. As a final note, if you decide to take a look at the museums of Gaziantep, you should also take a look at the shops that are right next to them. There are some great gift ideas bearing special regional motifs that the Bilkent Cultural Enterprise (BKG) has come up with. For example, there are silk scarves and shawls with designs from the Zeugma mosaics, bags with kilim designs on them, miniatures with images from the city and magnets with the image of the “Gypsy Girl,” which has become the most famous symbol of Zeugma itself. Rare Ottoman pottery going under the hammer at Bonhams and 80,000 pounds ($76,000-120,000), according to the auctioneers' website.

Rare samples of 16thcentury İznik pottery from the Ottoman Empire are going under the hammer next week in London at an April 23 Islamic and Indian art sale at Bonhams auction house. Two large İznik bottles dated around 1575, the golden age of the Ottoman Empire, are among the highlights of the sale, with estimated prices of between 50,000

The New Bond Streetbased auction house said in a press release it issued last month that the April 23 sale would mark the return of the two rare bottles to New Bond Street nearly a century after they were sold by antiques dealer Frank Dickinson from his gallery at 104 New Bond Street in January 1919. The buyer was Leonard Daneham Cunliffe, the deputy governor of the Bank of England, who used his collection of antiques to decorate his various homes. When Cunliffe died in 1937, the major part of his vast collection was bequeathed to the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge while the İznik bottles passed to his step-daughter, Ida Copeland. Adorned with bold and colorful floral designs, the bottles were originally purchased as “Rhodian” bottles, wrongly named

after the Greek island of Rhodes. They were recently identified as İznik and dating to circa 1575, the Bonhams press relea-se said.

Alice Bailey, head of Bonhams Islamic Depart-ment, says: "To find one İznik bottle of this type from the second half of the 16th century is very rare, but to come across two splendid examples in the same English collec-tion is astonishing. The market for important İznik ceramics is very strong, particularly among Turkish collec-tors, and these pieces are certainly worthy of a major collection or institution.» Objects ranging from silver mirrors to İznik dishes and Ottoman fountain panels, and from a 16th-century illuminated Qur'an to Ottoman sultans' firmans (edicts) are also among the 438 lots to be sold on Tuesday. Kayaköy set to host festival featuring tours, movie

screenings and local food

Kayaköy, an abandoned Greek village close to Fethiye, is preparing to host a two-week-long program to celebrate the diverse history of the village. Set to kick off on April 27, the 2013 Cultural Connections festival will comprise free and ticketed lectures, guided tours and workshops. The small village just eight kilometers south of Fethiye is effectively a history lesson in the period leading up to the population exchange agreements between the Tu r k i s h a n d G r e e k governments in 1923. The intermingling of populations previous to the population exchanges imparted a richness of culture to the area that can still be found today. Drawing on the area's heritage, the Cultural Connections celebration aims to make connections across cultures and to hearken back to a time of cultural diversity through art, literature and food. The festival will kick off with a guided walk through to ruins of Kayaköy with “Birds Without Wings” author Louis de Bernières. The celebrated novel tells the story of an ill-fated courtship in the fictional village of Eskibahçe. Kayaköy provided the inspiration for the setting while the political rise of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and the battles of World War I and Gallipoli are the background for the plot. At designated stops along the tour, Bernières will read portions of his acclaimed novel conjuring images of the abandoned stone buildings' former inhabitants. Last year Bernières led more than 100 people along the same route, and the positive response from it contributed to the organization of this year's festival. The tour will cost TL 20, the profits of which go to support the Kaya-

köy Village School. After the tour through the Kayaköy ruins, the festival will hold a free showing of “Dedemin İnsanları” (My Grandfather's People). The film, written and directed by special guest Çağan Irmak, depicts the effects of the population exchanges on one family and their social circle. A discussion will be held after the film with Irmak and the producer, Mustafa Oğuz. In order to acquaint visitors with the history of Kayaköy, events celebrating the literature, art, food and history of the village in Fethiye will be held throughout the festival. Most events will be centered around Günay's Garden, a vacation spot-cumfunction hall. Rebecca Keskin, who owns Günay's Garden with her husband, and Jane Akatay have organized the festival with the hopes of sharing their love of Kayaköy and its traditions. With its mixture of Greek and Turkish elements, the festival will cover traditional cuisine through cooking workshops with local, organic food, music through a free open-air concert, and the arts through demonstrations on carpet weaving, ebru (Turkish paper marbling), lace-making, painting, pottery and digital photography. In addition to Bernières and the men behind “Dedemin İnsanları,” the festival will welcome English authors Sofka Zinovieff, author of “The House on Paradise Street,” Victoria Hislop, author of “In the thread,” and Jeremy Seal, whose most recent book will be on his travels canoeing the Büyük Menderes.
