BALDWIN CITY MAIN STREET FARMERS AND CRAFT MARKET

READERS, Welcome to the spring/summer 2022 issue of Baldwin City Living. Another season has come and gone, and with that another issue highlighting this evergrowing town is here. With each issue, I am inspired by the initiatives and goals Baldwin City community members set forth and fulfill. I’m honored to work with community leaders who support the arts, new businesses, local farmers and crafters. And as the cold weather fades away, event organizers have also found ways to bring us together this summer with outdoor movie and music nights, barbecue contests, baseball tours, new restaurant openings, mural walks and more. A special thanks to Lori Trojan, Jeannette Blackmar, Paul Dorathy, Mark Dodge, Corey Venable, Baldwin City Recreation Commission, and all of the businesses and leaders in Baldwin City that help make this magazine possible. BEER COMPANY Microbrewery owner talks turning dream into reality, shares plans Story by Bob Luder | Photos courtesy Baldwin City Beer Company

C

hances are, Baldwin City residents had their curiosity piqued while driving past the corner of Sixth and High streets last fall. Why was that big white tent sitting in the middle of the parking lot of a closed antiques bazaar? There must have been something of interest happening underneath because it seemed as though crowds gathering inside the big top grew by the day, certainly weekend to weekend. Turns out, it was Cory Venable getting a jump-start on his dream. Venable, who had worked in insurance, and his wife, Jenni, envisioned the Baldwin City Beer Company while home-brewing beer from a one-barrel system in their home as a diversion from the

Covid-19 lockdown. When Antiques on the Prairie, an antiques consignment store that had been at the location since 2000, closed last July, a suitable building became available, and Venable knew the time was right to move ahead with his vision. Only, the pandemic had other ideas. Venable expected construction to begin toward the end of last summer, but supply and labor issues forced what seemed like a never-ending series of delays. However, nothing could stop Venable from getting a running start on his new business. He took advantage of the large parking lot out front and pitched his tent. After installing TVs, space heaters, and tables, he sold commercial beer—no microbrews just yet—and kept locals entertained throughout the fall.

Baldwin City Living Magazine | 2022 Spring/Summer

7 NE W IN TOWN “The intent was to have the tent for the Maple Leaf Festival (typically in October),” Venable says. “But, we kept it up after Maple Leaf and through November ... as just a regular bar. It grew into a really popular spot downtown.” The tent has finally come down, and a permanent Baldwin City Beer Company is now in the works. Venable says he sees a silver lining in all the delays because he’s been working with a welder friend of his to expand what he originally envisioned as a threebarrel brewing system into a seven-barrel brew house. The 7,800-square-foot building, which already comes with a built-in commercial kitchen, gives him plenty of space. Venable plans a large outdoor patio with a pair of garage doors that can be opened in good weather to lead into the expansive indoor area. The west side of the building will be an event space that can be rented out for parties and receptions. When not in use, it can be used as overflow seating in addition to the approximately 100 permanent seats. Venable says there will be a lot of glass dividers so that patrons can see into the brewing facility from the front bar and event space. “It’s a very versatile space,” he says. “Overall, I think we’ll be able to seat 150 to 200 people.” Venable plans to start out brewing five “base” beers—an imperial pale ale, wheat, cream ale, stout and pale ale.

“THE PLAN IS TO EXPAND UP TO 10 BEERS WITHIN THE FIRST YEAR,” HE SAYS. “WE’LL START MAKING MORE SEASONAL [BEERS], LIKE OKTOBERFEST’S. EVEN THOUGH I’VE BEEN BREWING BEER FOR OVER A YEAR NOW, I PLAN TO BRING IN A BREWMASTER AND WORK ALONGSIDE.” –Cory Venable

“The plan is to expand up to 10 beers within the first year,” he says. “We’ll start making more seasonal [beers], like Oktoberfest’s. Even though I’ve been brewing beer for over a year now, I plan to bring in a brewmaster and work alongside.” In addition to beer, Baldwin City Beer Company will offer pub food such as house pretzels, onion rings, and chicken wings; the menu’s centerpiece, though, will be barbecue, including pulled pork brisket, burnt ends and ribs. The opening of a new brewery speaks to the growth the town has seen since being deemed a part of Kansas Main Street community. “The addition of a new brewery in Baldwin City is a representation of everything that is evolving in our downtown

They will not just create great craft beers but promise epic barbeque as well. The brewery will also provide an event space, live music and more that will attract locals, students and visitors.” Venable says he’s especially excited about the Sixth and High location on the eastern edge of the downtown square. “There’s significant traffic through there,” he says. “The town remembers that building from when it was originally the C&D Super Foods grocery store. There’s a familiarity about it.” Venable also notes he expects to bring in visitors from surrounding areas such as Kansas City, Lawrence and Topeka.

“THE TOWN REMEMBERS THAT BUILDING FROM WHEN IT WAS ORIGINALLY THE C&D SUPER FOODS GROCERY STORE. THERE’S A FAMILIARITY ABOUT IT.” –Cory Venable

“I’m not sure you can call Baldwin City a tourist town, but it is. I think we’re going to be able to offer a versatile menu to bring people down. We’ll have live music, standup comedy … there are a lot of unique offerings we can have at the events space,” Venable says. “I know we’re going to get a lot of eyes on us.” Venable says he’s hoping for an early summer opening. “That’ll give us time to get settled before the first big event—the Maple Leaf Festival next fall,” he says. Visit the Baldwin City Beer Company’s Facebook page to stay up to date with its progress and opening day announcements.

Venable’s 7,800 square-foot space includes plans for an outdoor patio with a pair of garage doors to be opened during good weather, an event space for parties and receptions, and overflow seating. Baldwin City Living Magazine | 2022 Spring/Summer

PAUL DORATHY

MARK DODGE

AN ENDURING LEGACY AND A NEW START Baldwin City schools honor retiring superintendent, welcome newcomer to the role

A

fter almost 16 years, Paul Dorathy is retiring as superintendent of Baldwin City schools and passing the baton to incoming hire Mark Dodge. Dorathy’s career in education spans almost 38 years. After first serving as a teacher in Emporia, Dorathy went on to serve in several principal and director positions across Kansas schools before taking his first superintendent position in Southern Lyon County in 1998. Dorathy served in that role for 8 years before becoming superintendent at Baldwin City, where he has been ever since. Dorathy’s passion for the position has been sustained by the people he’s worked with over the years in the community. “The students and the staff, I mean, that’s why I do this job in the first place … because my satisfaction comes when students are able to do well and get the kind of education that they would like to have,” he says.

Ande Parks first joined the board of education at about the same time Dorathy was hired. He notes that Dorathy became a very important presence in the district. “He immediately brought a calm and relatable sense of integrity to the district. He’s a very approachable man, he’s a very caring man, and we’ve been through a lot of difficult things together,” Parks says. “I think through it all, while members of our community might not agree with him or decisions the board makes, I think everyone knows that Paul’s heart is in the right place and that he’s really trying to do what is best for kids in this town.” After his retirement, Dorathy and his wife, Cyndi, plan to spend more time with their 11 grandchildren, as well as pursue a travel goal: they hope to visit every national park in the United States. “I’ve been very lucky to have been the superintendent in this community for this long,” Dorathy says. “I don’t think most

superintendents get the opportunity to stay for 16 years. I think that is an anomaly ... but Cyndi and I just fell in love with this community.” As Dorathy prepares for retirement, he is also helping to facilitate the transition to Dodge, who will take over as superintendent on July 1, 2022. “Mark Dodge is a good man,” Dorathy says. “They hired a good person … and he’ll do a great job here in Baldwin.” Dodge has served in a variety of roles in education throughout his career and most recently was the director of school improvement and communications at Eudora. However, throughout his career, Dodge says that he has always been working toward a goal: to be a superintendent. “If you look back at the career path that I’ve taken, everything that I’ve done along the way is preparing me for this position,” Dodge notes. “It’s just something that’s been a part of me that I’ve wanted to do.” Dodge has family ties in Baldwin City as well as a love for the community, but the passion and dedication of the faculty and staff were important factors that drew him to the district. The selection process for finding the next superintendent for USD 348 was intentional and methodical, says Kelley Bethel-Smith, president of the board of education. The thorough process narrowed the field to a handful of qualified candidates, and Dodge emerged as the frontrunner. “We really wanted to do our best to make the absolute right choice for our district …, and there’s no doubt in my mind that Mark Dodge is the right fit for what we were looking for at this time [and] in this place,” Bethel-Smith says. She explained that Dodge’s visionary, out-of-the-box thinking and his ability to problem solve was just one of the ways he can help USD 348 achieve the goals they have identified. “I’m very excited about the future of this district because all eyes are on the kids and what’s going to serve them best,” BethelSmith says. Dodge is already setting goals, starting with building relationships within the community and learning what it means to be a Baldwin City Bulldog. “From an education standpoint, we want to focus on continuous improvement,” Dodge says. “We want to identify those things that we’re doing well and keep moving that needle, identify those areas that need improvement, and determine what we can do collectively to help move those things forward as a community.” With the support of the board and the community, Dodge can’t wait to get started in his dream role in Baldwin City. “We are so thankful to the Baldwin community. So far, everyone that we’ve come across, and everyone who’s reached out to us, has been so welcoming and so supportive,” Dodge says. “We just can’t wait to get there and roll up our sleeves and be part of the community.”

aldwin City baseball fans will get to embark on the first-ever baseball bus tour this summer. Starting July 22, a charter bus carrying 50 sports fanatics will depart from Baldwin City on an all-inclusive baseball tour around the Midwest. Sports fans will get the opportunity to visit and tour some of baseball’s most iconic fields such as Wrigley Field in Chicago and Field of Dreams in Dyersville, Iowa; they will even get to visit Notre Dame’s football stadium on this seven-day tour. Matt McClure, director of Baldwin City Recreation Commission, organized the trip in 2020, but it was derailed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Hotel reservations, lunches, dinners, stadium tours, baseball games and more all had to be rescheduled for the summer of 2022. McClure says he was able to reopen the baseball tour sign-up in December 2021, and it filled up by early February 2022. Reaching the maximum 50 participants reduced that the cost of the trip from $1675 to $1295 per person. “We are able to offer this trip at a price in which people could not generally do on their own,” McClure says. The charter bus will depart on July 22 and return July 29 “I BELIEVE THIS after seeing seven baseball games and making countless IS A GREAT memories along the way. Games OPPORTUNITY FOR will include a mix of major and THOSE PEOPLE minor league baseball teams, as well as stadium tours during the WHO LOVE SPORTS day and new cities to explore IN GENERAL AND each night. Attendees will get FOR THOSE WHO to see the Milwaukee Brewers LOVE TO TRAVEL.” face off against the Colorado Rockies, the Chicago Cubs vs. –Matt McClure the Cleveland Guardians, and the Cincinnati Reds vs. the Miami Marlins. Breakfasts are included at each hotel, lunches are set on college campuses, and dinners will be an array of traditional ballpark cuisine favorites. Seats at each stadium are secured on the lower levels and toward the infield—making a Ball Park Frank taste that much better. McClure says he first got the idea for the tour from private groups and organizations that were doing similar tours at much higher prices, but he hadn’t heard of anyone in Kansas offering a baseball tour to the public. Knowing this, he looked at the Major League Baseball (MLB) team schedules in fall of 2020 and saw that games lined up to make the trip possible once again. “I believe this is a great opportunity for those people who love sports in general and for those who love to travel,” McClure says. “In addition to seeing five different major league stadiums and two minor league parks, we are visiting three college campuses for lunch stops, [and taking] tours of two historic college football stadiums. Add in the Field of Dreams in Dyersville, Iowa; a tour of Wrigley Field; and the Louisville Slugger Museum in Kentucky, and the value speaks for itself.” McClure hopes to schedule another baseball tour for summer 2024 that will take place on the east or west coast, depending on MLB team schedules. S EAS ONAL Farmers Market, who holds a market on Saturdays. Other partners include the Baldwin City Community Garden, run by the Baldwin City Professional Women’s Group. Chamber of commerce executive director Lori Trojan expresses her excitement for the event. “There is so much here,” Trojan says. “When you line the streets with vendors and music and food, it is a party in Baldwin City and people love it. We love it. And now that Baldwin City is a Main Street community, here we are, bringing all our local businesses, local farmers, and local crafters [together]. [We are] inviting the businesses on the highway to participate all for the sake of really restoring, renewing our downtown area, which is all part of our Main Street project.” For the past ten years, the Lumberyard Arts Center has hosted art walks on Fridays in the summer. Four years ago, these Friday art walks transitioned into Third Friday Live on High events. As Lumberyard Arts Center executive director Jeannette Blackmar explains, “the summer art walks evolved into a broader collaboration incorporating downtown businesses to participate as a strategic intention to draw more people to shop local and widen the audience for the arts center.” In addition, the arts center’s “Art on the Farm” program developed in response to Covid-19 in 2020, Blackmar notes. “This program connected the arts center with local producers featuring visits to over ten local farms to create visual, photographic and literary art,” she says. Last September, the “Art on the Farm” program culminated in a gallery celebration that featured artwork created at the farms. Blackmar then contacted Trojan to bring businesses and farmers into the mix, creating the first ever Baldwin City Farmers and Craft Market where local food, local music, and local art come together to create community.

The telling of Baldwin City’s rich history through art

These women have played integral roles in the creation of the Mural Program. Pictured (from left) Jeannette Blackmar, Lori Trojan, Meg Cundiff, and Wendy Conover.

Empty, ordinary spaces throughout Baldwin City are turning into colorful canvases. Bare downtown walls, a wooden barn door, the Baker University maintenance building, and even benches in the park stand out with delightful murals painted by the community itself. The Baldwin City Community Mural Program, a joint project including the Lumberyard Arts Center, Baldwin City Chamber of Commerce and Baldwin City Library, unveiled its first mural in June 2017. Titled “The Maple Seed Fountain,” the inaugural artwork led by muralist Dave Loewenstein adorns a wall adjacent to the fire station. Painted at the center of the mural is a fountain surrounded by 10 maple seeds that depict images of the city’s history and culture such as the Women’s Bridge, Baker University and Signal Oak. More than 100 residents had a hand in the first mural. That local touch is what sets this project apart, says Jeannette Blackmar, executive director of Lumberyard Arts Center and a mural program founder. “We strive to involve community organizations, citizens and local artists. We have community paint days for every single mural,” Blackmar says. “When you paint, you are talking, telling stories and thinking of ideas. It’s a way to engage people and bring people together to create connections, a sense of community and build pride and trust. It’s the process that matters in creating a mural, not just the end result.” So far, an array of artists, budding apprentices and volunteers, including families, seniors, young professionals and students, have all wielded paintbrushes for the town’s four completed murals.

22 “It engages everyone,” Blackmar says, adding that the first mural drew a big turnout during six community paint days. Baldwin City High School art instructor Becky Weaver and her students have helped with all the murals. “I love seeing people who don’t think they are at all artistic get involved and seeing their sense of pride at the end,” Weaver says. “Whether it’s convincing some students to show up to paint or working with a team to make their ideas visual, helping people tap into their creative side is the fun part for me.” The process Once a site is selected (typically a building’s blank cement wall), a “call to artists” goes out, asking for designs for the next mural. The winning artist then does the prep work, eventually projecting the design on the wall and outlining it in chalk. Both the lead artists and apprentices are paid for their work. “Our apprentice program lets our local high school and college students work with experienced artists to create public art,” Blackmar explains. When it comes to painting, the lead artist and committee do the top of the mural for safety purposes. The community is then invited to come and paint the rest. A protective polyurethane coat is the final step. “From securing finances, to shopping for supplies, to setting up scaffolding, a single artists can’t do it alone. It takes a community,” Weaver says. That first mural and its whimsical maple seedpods still have some folks puzzled, Blackmar laughs. “What are those? Are they walruses,” she says some people have asked. “It really stirred a lot of talk, which is really good. That’s one of the reasons we do this, to get people talking and give them an opportunity to inform and explore. The second mural, “Fall for Baldwin City,” is a nod to the town’s top tourist attraction, the fall Maple Leaf Festival. Painted on a barn door behind Lumberyard Arts Center, the two giant maple leaves are popular for selfies, especially at festival time. The “Welcome Baldwin City” mural greets visitors arriving on US Highway 56. A street map is the backdrop, and the foreground features plants and flowers

MURAL WALKING TOUR Take a stroll through downtown to admire the Baldwin City murals and learn about the community’s history. Start your tour at the Maple Seed Fountain mural (located near the fire station): • The Maple Seed Fountain, 608 High Street, near the fire station • Baker Family Tree, 702 Seventh Street, on the Baker University Facilities Building west of the tennis courts • Five mural benches at Sullivan Square, 718 High Street • Fall for Baldwin City, 718 High Street, in the alley between the Lumberyard Arts Center and First United Methodist Church • Welcome Baldwin City, 705 Eighth Street, near The Nook Note: This walking tour can be done in a full circle in less than 15 minutes— depending on how long visitors spend with the captivating murals.

MAPPING OUT FUTURE MURALS Coming this summer is the unique “Harmony Garden,” combining nature, art and music on the Baldwin City Library’s front lawn. Still in the design stage, a 10-foot-long mural depicting nature will be installed on the library’s redbrick wall. In front of the mural, three-foot-tall metal flowers and butterflies will sprout up in the grassy lawn. The metallic blue, orange and turquoise flowers double as musical instruments, played with mallets that hang from the stems. “You strike the petals of the flower with the mallet, and it makes different tones like a xylophone,” Wendy Conover, director of Baldwin City Library, explains. “People will think it looks like an interesting garden, and then discover the metal flower sculptures are actually usable musical instruments,” she says. “We want to inspire them [community members] to come and see the mural, play the instruments and be in nature.” The Harmony Garden is funded by a grant from the Douglas County Community Foundation, with support from Friends of the Library and an anonymous donation by a citizen. Also in the planning stages is a mural in the Baldwin City Chamber of Commerce lobby. Currently soliciting artists to submit designs, the chamber and Main Street board (both composed of the same members) will select the winning idea with its creation slated to begin by April 2022. “When visitors walk into the lobby of the chamber, an empty wall faces them,” says chamber of commerce executive director Lori Trojan. “We thought this is simply a perfect location for a mural.” Ideas for the mural include a map of Baldwin City, a caricature of the community, as well as a large compass highlighting major attractions. “It’s yet to be decided, based on ideas the artists are now submitting,” Trojan says. The lobby mural is just one piece of a “quasi museum” planned for the chamber office. Currently, the downtown office houses the town’s historic Betty Hagerman quilt and a gallery exhibit that traces the history of the Maple Leaf Festival. Yet to come is the lobby mural and also a historic timeline of Baldwin City history illustrated along a 30-foot-long hallway. “It’s our chamber and Main Street goal to attract more attention to the city itself, bring in tourism and increase our economic vitality,” Trojan adds. “As part of that, we’d like to make the chamber office a real destination, not only for the community but for tourists, too.” Through its current fundraising drive, the Chamber hopes to raise $2,500 for its mural project. common to the area and a fox and ox, representing the local hard-working people. The newest work, “Baker Family Tree,” spotlights Baker University. Fittingly, Baker student Elaena Steffen submitted the winning design, now painted on a campus maintenance building. “I took an interterm class my freshman year called Coloring Our World. Our final project was to encapsulate the meaning and values of Baker through a mural. I presented my concept, and it was chosen to become a real mural here in Baldwin City,” Steffen says. Her family tree “symbolizes that Baker is not just a college, not just a community, but a family,” she says. Each leaf represents something important to the Baker family, including the Taft Bridge, Parmenter Hall, chapel, bagpipes and international students. “I have such a sense of pride being able to contribute and help design this mural,” Steffen says. “It is amazing to think that, even though I will move on and graduate in May, there will be a part of me forever marked into Baker and this community.” Murals have also moved beyond walls to downtown’s Sullivan Square, where themed scenes painted on boards are affixed to the backs of five benches. “There are a lot of untapped canvases,” Blackmar says. “We started downtown, but we envision murals created throughout the community.” At least 10 more murals are slated to be created in Baldwin City; however, funding relies on donations from individuals and organizations. Wendy Conover, director of the Baldwin City Library, a co-sponsor of the program, shares her passion for the mural project, “I see the great economic and social impact that beautifying our downtown has, and how it gives our community a sense of belonging,” Conover says. “Art is very subjective, and not everyone likes the same kind of art, but everyone appreciates the color, energy and activity it generates. And at the core, all of our mural art tells the story of Baldwin City one way or another.”
