2015 SL550 Roadster

Quality crosses cultures, ages and genres to become an instant classic. Every new Mercedes-Benz is a classic in the making. Mercedes-Benz has a history of making history. Since the first car, Mercedes-Benz has set the pace for what all cars might someday become. With an ongoing stream of firsts in safety, performance and driving enjoyment, it’s an ever more exciting roadmap to the future. And while there’s a neverending roster of new achievements, there’s only one reason the world’s first automaker remains first in innovation. Carl Benz said it best: “The love of inventing never dies.” The Roadster: in the tradition of all that have come before it, making it an instant classic.

Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts

Max Raabe & Palast Orchester Dashing, dapper and debonair, Max Raabe might have walked straight out of the Golden Age of Berlin in the 1920s. With his elegant poise, suave sophistication and silky-smooth baritone, he brings to life the songs and style of a bygone age. In an age where few of us dress for dinner or even a night at the opera, Raabe keeps a style that may have gone out of fashion, but his songs have earned the status of standards. Yet the time has never been better to discover the singer bringing timeless tunes by legends like Cole Porter and Irving Berlin, through to almost-forgotten names such as Al Bowlly and Fred Astaire, to a new generation. With a vintage revival sweeping the US, and growing numbers of twentysomethings donning tuxedos, flapper dresses and feathered head-bands to do the Charleston and the Foxtrot, Max Raabe’s moment has arrived. His ageless Peter Pan looks and impeccable style on and offstage have already made him a legend in his native Germany. So much so that he had to sell his beloved 1930s-vintage BMW because he was recognized as soon as he took the wheel. In America multi-city tours and enthusiastic coverage have earned him similar heights in popularity. Highlights in the US include sold out performances at Carnegie Hall, and appearances in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Boston, Atlanta, Seattle, Cleveland and many more. Audiences around the world have been entertained not only by his meticulous recreations of the standards as they used to be sung – in formal evening wear, with an orchestra, giving proper credits to the composers. They have also been rolling in the aisles at his deadpan jokes. Yes, Max Raabe is an example of that most unexpected quality – German humor. And in case you ever wondered, he assures us that: “All Germans are well aware that we have an international reputation for discipline, organization and efficiency - but no sense of humor.” Max Raabe is not only a unique talent, but a very funny man. He has even traded quips with Ernie and Bert on Sesame Street – or Sesame Strasse, as it is known in Germany. Perhaps it comes from his father: “His sense of humor was so dry that sometimes it was only the next day that I realized he had made a joke.” Born into a family of farmers just as The Beatles were serving their apprenticeship in the bars and clubs of Hamburg, Max’s childhood musical tastes were formed by his discovery of a weekly programme of 1920s music on German radio. “My brother was listening to Jethro Tull but that was my secret passion,” he remembers. “It was broadcast on Tuesday nights when I had to attend sports training, but I persuaded a friend of mine to record it for me every week. He would patiently hold the microphone to the radio in my family’s kitchen – sometimes you could hear my mother cooking in the background.” His passion was first roused by a record he found in his parents’ cupboard: a humorous instrumental called I’m Crazy About Hilda. Before long he was collecting 78s in flea markets and junk shops. By the age of 16 he was an expert on the songs and styles of the Weimar era, his enthusiasm fuelled by black-and-white films featuring music, dance and comedy. www.kauffmancenter.org

Then came the discovery of Wagner - “That made me aware of how wonderful it must be to go onstage and sing” - and of the Lieder maestro Dietrich Fischer - Dieskau, who remains his musical idol. And so, still in his teens, he plucked up the courage to dress up in his father’s top hat and tails at the height of the disco era to sing old-fashioned favorites at parties for friends. In his early 20s Max moved to Berlin to study opera, dreaming of becoming a baritone, moonlighting with a friend to perform the 1920s songs he loved so much at bars and student parties. After graduating, he made a handful of appearances in Carmina Burana at the Berlin Philharmonie, but quickly realized his true love remained the music of the 1920s and, surprised to find that there was no ensemble performing such songs, he formed with fellow students the Palast Orchester to play it. “The appeal is the timeless quality in the music, but also the humor,” he says. Max’s drily witty concert ‘announcements,’ in which he gives a brief background to each song, before crediting the composer, lyricist and year of publication, provide a humorous counterpoint. “Because perhaps a woman brings her husband to a concert and he might not like the singer or the music, but he may like the humor of the jokes.” Despite that, the songs and music are treated with the utmost reverence. “It is like a church service,” he says. “The stage is the altar, and I am the priest. Every note and ever phrase is polished like a diamond. We all studied classical music and we interpret the music in the same way we would interpret Beethoven. We take the music seriously – but we don’t take ourselves seriously.” Therein lies the appeal of Max Raabe, a man out of time, yet entirely in tune with today’s Recession-hit world, where – just like Berlin in the 1920s – we all want to take our minds off austerity with a night of good old-fashioned entertainment. “My only message is to entertain the audience during the concert and transport them out of reality,” he insists. “That is why this music was written, to take the audience away from their everyday problems. And it still works today.”

Mid-America Merchandising, Inc.

Tom and Carol Barnett are co-owners of Mid-America Merchandising, Inc.

Mid-America Merchandising, Inc. (MMI) considers their Ensemble membership to be a rock solid investment with a multiplier effect: it helps them to accomplish business goals while contributing to the arts in Kansas City, a cause dear to the hearts of business owners Tom and Carol Barnett. MMI is an incentives and promotional products business in Kansas City, Missouri. For the company’s 30th anniversary last fall, 150 guests joined in a celebration at the Kauffman Center. “Since we are a business in the River Market and are passionate about supporting the arts, it was an obvious choice,” said co-owner Carol Barnett. “It was an extra bonus that our Ensemble membership made it affordable.” Carol says that the Ensemble membership also increases the company’s range of client entertainment options. “We love taking clients to Kansas City’s wonderful sports events. Having arts options available, too, expands our ability to meet the range of our clients’ interests,” Carol said. As an Ensemble member, MMI can select from more than 300 performance options each year, with a personal concierge to arrange tickets. In February, Ensemble also helped the company thank its 40 employees for their work during their busiest months of November thru January. Working with their Ensemble concierge, they secured a block of tickets to two upcoming performances. “Each employee picked the show that was more attractive to them, plus they were able to bring a guest,” said Carol. “It was a sincere thank you and the chance to introduce employees to something new or different.” By sending their team to the Kauffman Center, Carol and Tom hope employees and their families will return again and again.

Rachel Krantz and Edward Goldstein When Rachel Krantz and Edward Goldstein moved to Kansas City in 2010, the dynamic arts scene they found didn’t surprise them. Rachel had grown up here and knew that there was a lot of excitement about all that was happening in the city. “We immediately wanted to get involved in the Kauffman Center as it was opening, to be part of this incredible place,” said Edward. Since then, they say that friends visiting from out of town are “blown away” by Kansas City. “We take them to the Nelson-Atkins Museum and arrange tickets to a performance at the Kauffman Center,” said Rachel. “Everyone comments on what a great city we have.” As Spotlight Premier members, Rachel and Edward are supporting a cultural scene that is important to them. “We have season tickets to the Kansas City Pops and National Geographic Live, which is our very favorite thing,” said Rachel. “Nat Geo takes us places around the world that we’d never get to see otherwise. Birds of Paradise really astounded me.” Edward adds that it’s important to them that everyone in the community has access to arts programs at the Kauffman Center. “This is part of the culture and not just for an elite few. We want to support the Center’s efforts to open the doors wide to children and others who might not be able to come otherwise.”

Members of Spotlight Premier share a passion for—and commitment to—the performing arts in Kansas City. For more information or to join Spotlight Premier, contact Janet Mark, Director of Development, at 816-994-7235 or jmark@kauffmancenter.org. www.kauffmancenter.org

Patron Information

Emergency Evacuation Procedures Kauffman Center is equipped with advanced life-safety early alert systems. Each performance hall is also designed with emergency exit stairwells, specifically for use in an evacuation. Ushering staff members are trained to provide direction when an emergency evacuation is announced from the stage. Please follow their instructions. It is important for patrons to recognize that the main entries and lobby areas will not be utilized by most patrons in an emergency evacuation, and elevators will NOT be in service. Lighted exit signs direct patrons to the emergency exit paths. Please take a moment to identify nearby exit signs. If a fire alarm is activated during an event, instructions will be delivered from the stage. An appropriate amount of time will be allowed for staff to investigate and verify the source of the alarm prior to evacuating the venue.* Patrons with mobility limitations should remain in the venue near one of the marked “Emergency Evacuation Assistance.” First responders will evacuate those requiring rescue assistance immediately upon their arrival. For questions or more details about emergency evacuation procedures, please contact a house supervisor or ushering team captain. *Kauffman Center’s emergency egress plan, which includes an appropriate amount of investigational time to verify the source of an alarm, was developed with the assistance of the Kansas City, Missouri Fire Marshall’s Office.
