Their success in recent years in taking our talented orchestra to the “next level” is clear. The role of our Board of Directors, on the other hand, is to provide the resources and support for the artistic challenge to be met, and I am pleased to report that we are experiencing good success on this front as well. Through thoughtful decision making and good stewardship, we have balanced our annual budgets (or better) in almost all of the last 20 years. We are also actively at work in building an even stronger financial foundation for the future. We will have more to announce on this soon. I express great thanks to our dedicated Board, and particularly our immediate past Chair and now Chair Emerita, Shirley Bush Helzberg, for leading the way. To you, our loyal supporters, we owe the greatest thanks. 2014/15 SEASON

Dear Friends, SPRING HAS SPRUNG, AND MUSIC IS IN FULL bloom at Helzberg Hall! With summer movie season just around the corner, the Kansas City Symphony is very excited to present three phenomenally entertaining cinema-centric programs. Mary Chapin Carpenter is an artist whose career and music surpass category. This Grammy® Awardwinning singer, songwriter, activist and humanitarian has a unique musical style with wide-ranging appeal that encompasses country, folk, rock, pop and more. We are thrilled to have her join the Symphony on May 8th to perform songs from her first symphonic album, “Songs from the Movie.” This project was arranged by composer Vince Mendoza, whom we also are pleased to welcome to the podium to conduct this concert. In 1940, one of the most important events in music history took place when Walt Disney led the creation of the classic film “Fantasia,” helping inspire a love for music in generations of children. For many, the film was their first exposure to symphonic music. Who can forget Mickey Mouse losing control of the broomsticks in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice or the dancing elephants in “Dance of the Hours?” Great film scores often draw their inspiration from the action and emotions on the big screen, but in “Fantasia,” music is the star. Featuring favorite scenes from both the original and the sequel, “Fantasia 2000,” this concert will bring music to life in a way you have never before experienced. One would be hard-pressed to find a musician as multi-talented and accomplished as the great Randy Newman. One of the foremost songwriters, film composers and pianists of his generation, there is seemingly no end to the number of memorable hits for which he is responsible. From “Ragtime” to “Toy Story” and “Seabiscuit” to “Monsters, Inc.,” whether humorous, heartfelt or heroic — it’s challenging not to be moved by Newman’s music. His performance with the Symphony is sure to be memorable. Thank you so much for all of the support you have shown the Kansas City Symphony. We cannot wait to share many more wonderful programs with you next season. Best wishes,

MARY CHAPIN CARPENTER | GUEST ARTIST

Mary Chapin Carpenter joins the Kansas City Symphony for a very special evening of songs from her debut orchestral record, “Songs from the Movie,” which was released in January of 2014. Arranged and conducted by six-time Grammy® Award-winner Vince Mendoza, (Sting, Diana Krall, Elvis Costello and Joni Mitchell) and produced by Carpenter, Mendoza and Matt Rollings (Keith Urban, Lyle Lovett), “Songs from the Movie” harkens to Carpenter’s love of classic film and symphonic music. The album features new interpretations of 10 beloved songs by Carpenter — from “Come On Come On” and “On and On It Goes,” to “I Am a Town” and “Goodnight America” — arranged by Mendoza in his distinctively beautiful and cinematic style, providing the continuum of a film soundtrack.

Over the course of her career, Carpenter has recorded 13 albums and sold more than 13 million records. She has won five Grammy® Awards, two Academy of Country Music awards and one Emmy award. Carpenter was named the Country Music Association’s® Female Vocalist of the Year in 1992 and 1993, and she also has been inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Her songs speak to the most personal and universal of life’s details. Consequently, her compositions have been covered by a diverse assortment of artists, including Joan Baez, Wynonna Judd, Cyndi Lauper, Trisha Yearwood, Maura O’Connell, Mary Black and Dianne Reeves. She also has collaborated on recordings or onstage with Joan Baez, Shawn Colvin, Dolly Parton, the Indigo Girls and Tony Bennett.  22

VINCE MENDOZA | GUEST CONDUCTOR

Vince Mendoza has been at the forefront of the jazz and contemporary music scene as a composer, conductor and recording artist for the last 20 years. According to All About Jazz magazine, Mendoza “daringly expands the vernacular by including elements of abstract impressionism, romanticism and a highly unorthodox palette to position him as the clear and natural successor to the late Gil Evans.” In addition to his many compositions and arrangements for big band, chamber and symphonic settings, Mendoza’s jazz composing credits read like a “who’s who” of the best modern instrumentalists and singers in the world today. Mendoza’s arrangements have appeared on many critically acclaimed projects, including dozens of albums with song-writing legends such as Björk, Chaka Khan, Al Jarreau, Bobby McFerrin, Melody Gardot, Sting and Joni Mitchell. He has six Grammy® Awards and 28 nominations.

Mendoza is the music director and chief conductor of the Netherlands Metropole Orchestra. In addition, he appears frequently as a guest conductor with orchestras throughout the United States, Europe, Japan, Scandinavia and the U.K. Mendoza also has written commissioned compositions and arrangements for the Turtle Island String Quartet, Chicago Symphony, Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, Metropole Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic, West Deutsche Rundfunk and the BBC. His music has been featured at the Berlin Jazz Festival, and he has performed at the Montreux and North Sea Jazz Festivals. A little history on

by Butch Rigby, founder, Screenland Theatres

Walt Disney released “Fantasia,” his third feature-length cartoon, in 1940. As with previous projects, innovation played a key part in the life of the film. Disney originally intended to release the iconic Sorcerer’s Apprentice as a “Silly Symphony” short, but when costs ran so high that it could never recoup its investment, he decided to build an entire feature film around the short subject — and “Fantasia” was born. The full-length film 28

contained eight separate vignettes, each featuring a piece of classical music. Disney first approached prominent conductor Leopold Stokowski about the project at a Hollywood restaurant, and the conductor quickly embraced the idea. Stokowski’s enthusiasm for the concept ultimately led him to work on the film for free, and the Philadelphia Orchestra performed the music for seven of the eight segments on this first-

ever stereo movie soundtrack. Though recognized as a masterpiece today, “Fantasia,” which was released in a road show traveling 13 cities, faced financial challenges from the beginning. Early reviews were mixed, the war in Europe had cut off the profitable European market, and Disney had to set up each theatre with a special $85,000 “Fantasound” system. Film production and distribution company RKO Pictures allowed Disney to handle this project on his own for the most part, calling it a “longhair film.” Despite great

A long period of what was then groundbreaking animation using computer animation laid over traditional hand-drawn cells resulted in a 1999/2000 IMAX exclusive release. The film actually reuses The Sorcerer’s Apprentice from the original, with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the direction of conductor James Levine providing an updated symphonic background. The

Since then, it has achieved both critical and financial success while becoming a beloved classic for generations of audiences. Walt Disney’s nephew, Roy E. Disney, first suggested the idea of a sequel to the original film in 1974. He finally pitched it to

ABOUT K ANSA S CIT Y SYMPHONY

OUR HISTORY

Founded by R. Crosby Kemper, Jr., in 1982, the Kansas City Symphony has established itself as a major force in the cultural life of the community. Praised for performances of uncompromising standard, the orchestra is the largest in the region and enjoys a national reputation under the artistic leadership of Music Director Michael Stern. The Kansas City Symphony also experienced impressive artistic growth through its history and under the batons of Russell Patterson (1982-1986), William McLaughlin (1986-1997) and Anne Manson (1998-2003). Aram Demirjian, associate conductor, conducts the Family, Pops and Classics Uncorked concerts. Charles Bruffy is the chorus director. The Kansas City Symphony serves a metropolitan population of 1.8 million people. The orchestra’s 80 full-time musicians are area residents and vital contributors to the artistic life of Kansas City. During its 42-week season, the Symphony performs a wide variety of subscription, educational, touring and outreach concerts. In addition, the Kansas City Symphony performs with the Lyric Opera of Kansas City and the Kansas City Ballet. AWARD-WINNING LEADERSHIP

The Kansas City Symphony is governed by a Board of Directors under the leadership of Board Chair William M. Lyons and is administered by a full-time 42

professional staff led by Executive Director Frank Byrne. In addition, the Kansas City Symphony benefits from the dedicated efforts of its volunteer associations. The Symphony’s five auxiliaries, with total membership of more than 700, raise more than $1 million annually, making it one of the most successful orchestra volunteer forces in the nation. FINANCIAL STRENGTH

The Kansas City Symphony has demonstrated a strong commitment to fiscal responsibility. From a budget of $1.5 million in its first season, the Symphony’s annual operating budget has grown to more than $14 million. Major gifts from the Board, local foundations and individuals have created an endowment that is in excess of $40 million. The Symphony’s annual fund campaign and other fundraising events are integral to our continued success, and we welcome your participation as a Business Partner or as a member of the Symphony Society or other donor groups. EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY FOCUS

The vision of the Symphony’s education department is to enable people of all ages in the greater Kansas City area to learn, create and become inspired through orchestral music. More than 50,000 people participate in KCS education programs annually. Most popular are specially programmed school concerts — KinderKonzerts, Young People’s Concerts and Link Up — performed in front of a cumulative audience of 30,000 annually. Several thousand more are involved with the Symphony through activities including the Open Rehearsal Series, Bush and Jamie Helzberg Instrument Petting Zoo program and Charles and Virginia Clark Inside Music Series. Dozens of area student musicians participate in the Woman’s City Club Charitable Foundation Young Artist Competition, where the winner is awarded a cash prize and the opportunity to perform with the Kansas City Symphony. The Symphony’s Bill and Peggy Lyons Support School Music program takes the orchestra into area schools to perform a concert and all ticket sales directly benefit the school district’s music department. Since the program’s inception, more than $140,000 has been generated for school music education programs. Recently, the Symphony has piloted new music education programs and partnerships.  KANSAS CITY SYMPHONY

K AUFFMAN CENTER SAFET Y

& SECURIT Y

KAUFFMAN CENTER SAFETY AND SECURITY

Kauffman Center places the highest priority on the comfort and safety of its patrons. Kauffman Center provides 24-hour security and video surveillance services, EMT medical services at events and has more than 400 trained ushers to provide direction and support in the event that emergency egress or severe weather refuge is required. IN ANY EMERGENCY

It is imperative that you listen to and comply with any and all specific instructions that are announced. IN CASE OF FIRE

Kauffman Center is equipped with advanced life-safety early alert systems. Each performance hall also is designed with numerous emergency exit stairwells, specifically for use in an evacuation, which lead directly outside. The areas to the north of the Kauffman Center (Bartle Hall parking lot and Bartle Ballroom Courtyard) are good places to meet others in your group if you become separated. It is important for patrons to recognize that the main entries and lobby areas will not be used by most patrons in an emergency evacuation, and elevators will NOT be in service. Lighted exit signs direct patrons to the emergency exit paths. Please take a moment to identify nearby exit signs. If a fire alarm is activated during an event, instructions will be delivered from the stage. An appropriate amount of time will be allowed for staff to investigate and verify the source of the alarm prior to evacuating the venue. This plan was developed with the assistance of the Kansas City, Mo., Fire Marshal’s Office. Patrons with mobility limitations should remain in the venue near one of the marked “Emergency Evacuation Assistance” areas. First responders will evacuate those requiring rescue assistance immediately upon their arrival. IN CASE OF A TORNADO

Please follow all instructions as announced from the stage. For questions or more details about emergency evacuation procedures, please contact a house supervisor or ushering team captain.
