Here in Lawrence, we believe that art is good for the soul, and what’s good for the soul is good for the community. That’s why spaces intended to inspire and showcase creativity can be found throughout the city in abundance, and why artists, performers, and creators flock to the city. Arts are a fundamental part of Lawrence’s unmistakable identity, and we invite you to visit and add your unique voice to our story.
SPENCER MUSEUM OF ART
A world-class art collection is the center of this public museum on the University of Kansas campus. The permanent collection shares space with thoughtfully curated and highly relevant rotating exhibitions. LAWRENCE ARTS CENTER
If Lawrence’s thriving art scene has a focal point, it is the community arts center. The Arts Center stage hosts local and touring performances while its galleries are free to the public. You might want to time your trip to Lawrence during the center’s Free State Festival, a celebration of art, film, and music that has hosted luminaries such as George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic, Chuck D, Bootsy Collins, and more.
940 New Hampshire St.
LIED CENTER OF KANSAS
A multi-stage performance venue whose main theater seats more than 2,200 guests, the Lied hosts KU performances as well as a full schedule of touring musicians, entertainers, and stage productions. The 2024 lineup includes Ira Glass, Juilliard String Quartet, Mandy Patinkin, and more.

DOWNTOWN OUTDOOR SCULPTURES
For 34 years, the City of Lawrence has commissioned talented regional and national artists to place original sculptures and three-dimensional artwork in Downtown Lawrence and at a few cultural venues. Find your favorite and come back each year to see the annual rotation of new works.
THE BISON
The four-ton limestone bison sculpture has stood near the intersection of 23rd Street (Clinton Parkway) and Marvonne Road since 1988. Some call the bison “Buffy,” but most Lawrencians know it simply as “the 23rd Street Buffalo.”
Created by artist Jim Patti as part of a competition sponsored by the Kansas Sculpture Association, the bison has been adopted by an informal group of neighbors who decorate the sculpture for holidays and other events.

SECRETS & LORE
Whether you like your lores and legends haunted, supernatural, or inspiring—Lawrence is full of amazing stories, past greats, and places to explore them.
THE ELDRIDGE GHOST
The Eldridge Hotel is one of Lawrence’s most historic locations; a centerpiece of Free State resistance during Bleeding Kansas, and one of the main targets when Confederate raiders took over the town in 1863, the Eldridge has numerous reports of ghost sightings, particularly on the 5th floor. You’ve been warned!
701 Massachusetts
THE CAMPANILE
A working clarion concert tower dedicated to World War II veterans, the Campanile sits in the heart of the University of Kansas campus and is a central part of the graduation tradition when graduates march through its passageway and downhill to their ceremony. Visitors are welcome to visit and see the memorial dedication inside the Campanile, but students who pass through the Campanile before graduation, it is believed, will bring all sorts of bad luck upon themselves.
1450 Memorial Drive
WONDER FAIR’S HAUNTED BATHROOM
The public bathroom at this downtown art supply store certainly seems haunted with strange noises, lights, and moving objects. Is it possessed or merely a wonderful art installation? Who knows—but it is one of the rare bathrooms to have its own line of souvenir postcards, bumper stickers and even cleansing soap.

UNDERGROUND LAWRENCE
As some tell it, Lawrence has a vast network of underground connections and tunnels; this myth might be based on the underground hydropower connections that existed in Lawrence, on the university’s underground steam tunnels, or on the city’s and region’s very real connections to the Underground Railroad. You can learn more about the Underground Railroad connections at the Watkins Community Museum of History and the Wakarusa River Valley Heritage Museum.

ZOMBIE WALK
Every October, residents gather at South Park in their zombie finest to parade down Mass Street and raise money or supplies for a local charity.
CARNIVAL OF SOULS
Lawrence was one of two locations chosen for the filming of the 1962 cult horror-film classic, Carnival of Souls by Lawrence resident Herk Harvey. As far as we know, there is no true secret gathering of the recent dead in Lawrence, but the tradition of great films continued with Lawrence being the scene of the hugely influential 1983 television film The Day After and home to 2019 Oscar-winning filmmaker Kevin Willmott.
LUMINARIES
Lawrence has been home to several famous people, including mystery novel writer Sara Paretsky, Olympian Billy Mills, vaudeville legend George Walker, environmental activist Erin Brockovich, Beat legend William Burroughs, and Harlem Renaissance poet and playwright Langston Hughes.
1313 MOCKINGBIRD LANE
It’s a toy store, but eternally spooky. From Munster dolls to Ghostbusters-replica toy cars, Mockingbird has the odd, creepy and delightful. 1027 Massachusetts

SHOP PETS
& ANIMAL AMBASSADORS
They are the closest thing Lawrence has to royalty—the cats, dogs and other residents at city shops and venues. Some of them greet you, some of them deign to be greeted—but either way, they rule.
DINAH AT THE DUSTY BOOKSHELF
This popular downtown used bookstore has hosted several resident cats over the last 20 years. Dinah does occasionally love attention, but should be approached with consideration. She has no reading recommendations, but she does have her own T-shirt you can buy. 708 Massachusetts
THE RAVEN’S DASHIELL
Though the Raven Book Store is recognized nationally for its fierce defense of independent booksellers against a certain corporate giant, the store is also loved locally for its long tradition of hosting loveable bookstore cats. Dashiell, named after famed mystery author Dashiell Hammett, currently holds down the job of greeting visitors and being the textbook definition of adorable. 809 Massachusetts
WONDER FAIR’S DAVE
He’s been featured on his own calendar. He appears on stickers, pins, postcards, stamps, shirts, a Valentine’s box kit and more—an entire line of merchandise. He’s Dave, Wonder Fair’s delightful resident tabby. The dedicated cat resists allowing his celebrity to go to his head; you can find him roaming or snoozing at the store most every working day. 841 Massachusetts

In its first full year of business, this cafe is temporary home to a cast of cats from the Lawrence Humane Society, all available for adoption. The cats reside behind a plexiglass barrier inside the cafe that has a dedicated ventilation system, meaning it is safe for people with allergies to visit the cafe. For a fee, guests can enter the “purrparlor” section of the cafe and interact with the cats.

PET WORLD
The city’s oldest continually operating pet store, Pet World has supplies, fish, reptiles, and other small animals to adopt, as well as a group of resident animals who are often featured in the store’s camps and educational programming. Say hello to Goliath, Pet World’s beloved python who lives on-site in a comfy, two-story heated enclosure.
711 W. 23rd St.
PRAIRIE PARK NATURE CENTER
Sitting in a 100-acre preserve featuring trails, a lake, and native prairie, this center hosts a troupe of permanent animal ambassadors, most of whom are former wild animals who were injured and rescued but not in condition for return-release. See eagles, owls, hawks, ferrets, and Phoebe the opossum. Admission to the center is free. 2730 Harper St.
