The Laurel Highlands is known as a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering everything from hiking and biking to whitewater rafting and other adrenaline-pumping activities. But what if you’re looking for something different—something a little more magical? If you’re yearning to step away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and immerse yourself into a setting straight out of a fairytale, look no further than the Hobbit House at Fernstone Retreat.
Dating back to the 1940s, Fernstone Retreat has been a destination for travelers seeking to relax and connect with nature. Over the years, its charm has only grown, particularly with the addition of unique and tiny living quarters like the Hobbit House. Nestled in a lush corner of the Laurel Highlands, this enchanting hideaway offers a truly unforgettable experience.
A Magical Hideaway
Designed by Fred Zeigler, the Hobbit House is a cozy onebedroom, one-bathroom retreat created specifically for couples seeking an intimate getaway. Surrounded by ferns and overlooking a serene private pond, the house blends seamlessly with its natural surroundings. Zeigler’s vision was to give guests a peaceful space to disconnect and recharge.
“My goal is to have unique and different experiences available for guests coming to our area. The Hobbit House is meant for a couple to have an intimate and private getaway in a beautiful environment overlooking a small lake,” says Zeigler. “It really is special.”
What makes the Hobbit House stand out is its exquisite craftsmanship and whimsical design. From the moment you step through its charming round door, you’re transported into a world that feels like it’s from the pages of a Tolkien novel. The structure is a wooden sanctuary, meticulously handcrafted to exude charm and tranquility. Every element has been thoughtfully designed to enhance the magical experience.
“The roof is self-supporting, six beams that are integrated and tied together in such a way that one supports the other. We left a four-foot opening in the center and added a beautiful arched dome above the handmade black walnut bed,” Zeigler says.
The bed itself is another work of art, crafted from pine trees harvested on the property. Cut at root height, the bed posts give the illusion of growing right out of the floor, further immersing guests in the fairytale setting. This magical touch is just one of many details that make the Hobbit House so extraordinary.
A Personal Connection
Zeigler’s connection to the Laurel Highlands runs deep—he was born and raised in the area and deeply appreciates its natural beauty.
“I really like to take a day every now and then to just be a tourist,” he says. “I see why people come here. We have some of the most beautiful hiking trails and that amazing bike trail that traverses all the way to Washington, D.C., and beyond. It’s perfect here.”
While Zeigler finds joy in the area’s attractions, it’s the heartfelt responses from visitors to the Hobbit House that truly fuel his passion for this unique project.
“The reality is I love to be part of people’s joy,” he says. “I’ve gone through some things in my life that made me realize how important the simple things really are, and we have so many couples who give us such beautiful comments on their departure. It makes the time and effort that were put into the build so worth it.”
For those looking to escape the pressures of daily life and embrace a fairytale-like experience, the Hobbit House at Fernstone Retreat offers the perfect blend of artistry, nature, and tranquility. Whether you’re gazing at the stars through the skylight, relaxing by the private pond, or simply enjoying the handcrafted details of the tiny home, every moment feels like magic.
