Letter from

Derek S. Kwan Executive Director

We literally have something for everyone during your Lied Center’s 2016–2017 season! It has been so much fun orchestrating all of this season’s events based upon meaningful feedback from all of you—our wonderful patrons. Due to popular demand, we are ecstatic to add an additional night to the exclusive Just Friends Jazz Series. Special thanks to all of our Friends of the Lied who make it possible for your Lied Center to serve the entire community and university. Please don’t forget that I’d love to hear from you about artists you’d like to see at your Lied Center.

Lied Center Exhibits Throughout the Lied Center lobbies, you will find a variety of artwork, including pieces by Jeff Weinberg, Barbara Nordling and Stephen T. Johnson. Lobby cases feature work created by Southwest Middle School students as they explore topics related to each season’s programming. And, thanks to a partnership with Student Union Activities (SUA), the Lied Center is also proud to host a rotating, juried art exhibit featuring works by the university’s most talented students.

Please enjoy your souvenir program. When it is time to discard it, please recycle. Recycling bins are located by the exits and at the Audience Services desk following this performance.

Engagement & Education

Beyond the Stage with the Lied Center We present world-class artists on our stage, and each season we invite select artists to interact with children, university students and adults beyond the stage. Videos of these unique and wonderful interactions are available online at lied.ku.edu/beyond.

Lied Across Kansas The first year of Lied Across Kansas was a huge success, and we are looking forward to traveling the state with Erik Kaiel/Arch 8 in February 2017. These dancers will make stops in Sabetha, Salina, Russell and Hays. During their visits, they will work with students and educators and engage with members of the public. Don’t worry—Lawrence won’t miss out on the excitement either! You can see these amazing artists perform in the Pavilion on Saturday, February 25. A special thanks to the Sam Mazza Foundation for supporting this project.

School-Only Performing Arts Experiences This season, more than 10,000 students in USD 497 will enjoy the power of the performing arts for free. Programs include Paige in Full, a production that explores a young woman’s identity; MOMIX’s blend of physical theatre, circus, athleticism and comedy; Still/Falling, a performance about mental illness; and Imani Winds, the Grammy Award-winning chamber music ensemble. More information is available at lied.ku.edu/engagement.

Supporting the Jayhawk Community We are honored to support the next generation of performing artists and arts lovers. We do so by featuring talented university students performing with world-class guest artists and providing the opportunity for KU students to participate in guestartist master classes and workshops. We also partner with Student Union Activities to produce performances, lectures and events at the Lied Center that are relevant to students, such as Tunes @ Night. Approximately 100 students per year are employed by the Lied Center in areas ranging from the Ticket Office to the Technical Department.

APR 11 | Takács Quartet

Edward Dusinberre, violin Károly Schranz, violin Geraldine Walther, viola András Fejér, cello The Takács Quartet, now entering its forty-second season, is renowned for the vitality of its interpretations. The New York Times recently lauded the ensemble for “revealing the familiar as unfamiliar, making the most traditional of works feel radical once more,” and the Financial Times described a recent concert at the Wigmore Hall: “Even in the most fiendish repertoire these players show no fear, injecting the music with a heady sense of freedom. At the same time, though, there is an uncompromising attention to detail: neither a note nor a bow-hair is out of place.” The Takács Quartet was formed in 1975 at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest by Gabor Takács-Nagy, Károly Schranz, Gabor Ormai and András Fejér, while all four were students. It first received international attention in 1977, winning First Prize and the Critics’ Prize at the International String Quartet Competition in Evian, France. The Quartet also won the Gold Medal at the 1978 Portsmouth and Bordeaux Competitions and First Prizes at the Budapest International String Quartet Competition in 1978 and the Bratislava Competition in 1981. The Quartet made its North American debut tour in 1982. Violinist Edward Dusinberre joined the Quartet in 1993 and violist Roger Tapping in 1995. Violist Geraldine Walther replaced Mr. Tapping in 2005. In 2001 the Takács Quartet was awarded the Order of Merit of the Knight’s Cross of the Republic of Hungary, and in March of 2011 each member of the Quartet was awarded the Order of Merit Commander’s Cross by the President of the Republic of Hungary. The Takács became the first string quartet to win the Wigmore Hall Medal in May, 2014. The Medal, inaugurated in 2007, recognizes major international artists who have a strong association with the Hall. Recipients so far include Andras Schiff, Thomas Quasthoff, Menachem Pressler and Dame Felicity Lott. Appointed in 2012 as the first-ever Associate Artists at Wigmore, the Takács present six concerts every season there. Other European engagements in 2016-17 include Florence, Milan, Geneva, Amsterdam, and Paris. In September 2016 they appeared in Singapore, Japan and Hong Kong, and in August 2017 will visit Australia and New Zealand. A recent tour to South America included concerts in Chile and Brazil. In 2012, Gramophone announced that the Takács was the only string quartet to be inducted into its first Hall of Fame, along with such legendary artists as Jascha Heifetz, Leonard Bernstein and Dame Janet Baker. The ensemble also won the 2011 Award for Chamber Music and Song presented by the Royal Philharmonic Society in London. Based in Boulder at the University of Colorado, the Takács Quartet performs ninety concerts a year worldwide.

APR 11 | Takács Quartet

Page 8

During the 2016–2017 season, the ensemble will perform complete six-concert Beethoven quartet cycles in London’s Wigmore Hall, at Princeton, the University of Michigan, and at UC Berkeley. In preparation for these cycles Takács first violinist Edward Dusinberre’s book, called Beethoven for a Later Age: The Journey of a String Quartet, was published in the UK by Faber and Faber and in North America by the University of Chicago Press. The book takes the reader inside the life of a string quartet, melding music history and memoir as it explores the circumstances surrounding the composition of Beethoven’s quartets. The Takács Quartet performed Philip Roth’s Everyman program with Meryl Streep at Princeton in 2014, and again with her at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto in 2015. The program was conceived in close collaboration with Philip Roth. The Quartet is known for such innovative programming. They first performed Everyman at Carnegie Hall in 2007 with Philip Seymour Hoffman. They have toured 14 cities with the poet Robert Pinsky, collaborate regularly with the Hungarian Folk group Muzsikas, and in 2010 they collaborated with the Colorado Shakespeare Festival and David Lawrence Morse on a drama project that explored the composition of Beethoven’s last quartets. The Takács Quartet records for Hyperion Records, and their releases for that label include string quartets by Haydn, Schubert, Janáček, Smetana, Debussy and Britten, as well as piano quintets by César Franck and Shostakovich (with Marc-André Hamelin), and viola quintets by Brahms (with Lawrence Power). Future releases for Hyperion will include a Dvořák disc with Lawrence Power (viola), the Dohnanyi Piano Quintets with Marc-André Hamelin, and piano quintets by Elgar and Amy Beach with Garrick Ohlsson. For their CDs on the Decca/London label, the Quartet has won three Gramophone Awards, a Grammy Award, three Japanese Record Academy Awards, Disc of the Year at the inaugural BBC Music Magazine Awards, and Ensemble Album of the Year at the Classical Brits. Full details of all recordings can be found in the recordings section of the Quartet’s website. The members of the Takács Quartet are Christoffersen Faculty Fellows at the University of Colorado Boulder and play on instruments generously loaned to them by the Shwayder Foundation. The Quartet has helped to develop a string program with a special emphasis on chamber music, where students work in a nurturing environment designed to help them develop their artistry. The Quartet’s commitment to teaching is enhanced by summer residencies at the Aspen Festival and at the Music Academy of the West, Santa Barbara. The Takács is a Visiting Quartet at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London.

APR 19 | The Beach Boys

Page 10

There will be a 20-minute intermission. Biography Conventional measurements fall short when assessing the impact of The Beach Boys. This band has birthed a torrent of hit singles and sold numerous albums. But its greater significance is its impact on the musical landscape. Thankfully, The Beach Boys continue to create and perform with the same bold imagination and style that marked their explosive debut over 50 years ago. In 2013, their Capitol Records release, Sounds of Summer (RIAA certified triple platinum), and its companion, The Warmth of the Sun, marks a resurgence in Beach Boys interest. In addition to founding Beach Boy Mike Love (lead vocals) and Beach Boy-vet Bruce Johnston (vocals/keyboards)—Jeffrey Foskett (guitar/vocals), Brian Eichenburger (bass/vocals), Tim Bonhomme (keyboards/vocals), John Cowsill of The Cowsills (percussion /vocals) and Scott Totten (guitar/vocals) round out the band. This tour will not feature Brian Wilson, Al Jardine or David Marks. Love’s role as the band’s front man sometimes overshadows his stature as one of rock’s foremost songwriters. Surfin’, their first hit, came from his pen. With Wilson, his cousin, Love wrote the classics Fun, Fun, Fun, I Get Around, Help Me Rhonda, California Girls and the Grammy-nominated Good Vibrations. Grammy-winning songwriter Bruce Johnston joined The Beach Boys in 1965, replacing Glenn Campbell, who filled-in for Brian Wilson, on vocals/bass, when he retired from touring. Johnston’s vocal work with such legendary artists as Elton John and Pink Floyd firmly established him among rock’s elite artists. Had it been less committed to its art and its fans, The Beach Boys could have retired at dozens of points along the way like the success of Pet Sounds in 1966, or after recording Love’s co-written Golden Globe nominated Kokomo in 1988 and seeing it become its best-selling single ever, or after being inducted that same year into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, or after winning the NARAS Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. In 2012, The Beach Boys scheduled a 74-date 50th Anniversary Reunion Tour in which the original members reunited and released That’s Why God Made the Radio, which debuted at # 3 on the Billboard charts, their highest chart position in 37 years. Few acts can match The Beach Boys’ concert presence. They were center-stage at Live Aid, multiple Farm Aids, the Statue of Liberty’s 100th Anniversary Salute, the Super Bowl and the White House. On one day alone—July 4, 1985—they played to nearly 2 million fans at shows in Philadelphia and Washington, D. C. The band has also appeared on countless worldwide TV shows throughout the years including: Dick Clark’s American Bandstand, The Tonight Show, TNT’s NBA All-Star Game, NBC’s Macy’s Day Parade, The Today Show and Good Morning America. On The Beach Boys’ horizon is another national/world tour and charity activities through Mike Love’s Love Foundation, which supports national environmental and educational initiatives. Love and The Beach Boys’ recent efforts raised over a quarter of a million dollars for the Red Cross to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina and made additional contributions to the disaster relief in Haiti.

Trumpet, Vocals, Composer Noted as a Millennial “Shaking up the jazz world,” according to Vanity Fair, Skonberg is a self-described “small town girl” from Chilliwack, British Columbia. She left for Vancouver straight out of high school and earned a degree in Jazz Trumpet Performance from Capilano University. But even as she absorbed the deep knowledge and disciplined work habits needed for a jazz career, she was also hustling hard to book her two bands. While in university she juggled working every weekend, traveling to festivals and shows, plus cramming in schoolwork - all while on the road. When not traveling for her own gigs, she was building up her stage-show chops with Dal Richards, Vancouver’s King of Swing. Playing at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver capped off this exciting period, with Bria featured at the Paralympics opening ceremony. In 2012, Bria released So Is The Day (Random Act Records); her first album on a US-based label. That collection showcased a developing flair for original songs with just the right amount of standards mixed in, and also featured a duet with the legendary John Pizzarelli, So Is The Day received rave reviews from critics, drawing comparisons to Norah Jones in The New York Daily News. In 2015, a year after her second album, Into Your Own, was released, Skonberg received the Jazz At Lincoln Center Swing! Award. To date, Bria has performed at some 100 festivals worldwide. She is the co-founder of the New York Hot Jazz Camp and New York Hot Jazz Festival. Further accolades include Best Vocal and Best Trumpet awards from Hot House Jazz Magazine (2014-15), Outstanding Jazz Artist at the New York Bistro Awards (2014), a DownBeat Rising Star (2013-15), and a nominee for Jazz Journalists’ Association Up and Coming Artist (2013).

Mathis Picard Piano

Mathis Picard, a young and upcoming jazz pianist is currently living in New York City. Born in France, he began playing the piano at the age of 4. His musical education switched from classical to jazz early on in his life, starting at the Centre Musical de Didier Lockwood at age 8. After moving to the United Kingdom in 2005, he was a student of Gerri Rossi & Tommy Smith. He was also a student of Dennis Montgomerry III in Berklee’s summer program in Italy, where he also received two consecutive outstanding musicianship awards in 2007 and 2008. At ages 10 and 12 Picard was the youngest ever finalist at the Montreux Jazz Piano competition and was awarded a special prize on both occasions. Convinced at age 11 that he wanted to be a musician, Picard joined Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, UK. It was there that music became a lifetime passion. During his time in the UK, Picard published his first composition in the Real Book North West, and was featured as a guest artist on the Christmas edition of Jazzwise Magazine UK’s CD release in 2008. Later that year, Picard became sponsored by the Little Dreams Foundation, founded by Phil Collins. Picard performed as a finalist in the Nottingham International Jazz Piano Competition as well as in the Yamaha Jazz Experience in 2010. In 2011, Picard was commissioned to write a piece and perform with the Northern Chamber Orchestra (NCO) and his jazz trio in 2012. Picard has been attending The Juilliard School since 2012, and has performed alongside Jason Moran, Sonny Emory, Patty Austin and Lee Ritenour. He has been featured on the ARTE TV (FRA/GER) series of his lifestyle in NYC which has been broadcasted worldwide, and has received a Jazz Piano Young Arts award. He was also a semi-finalist in the BBC Young Jazz Musician awards in 2013. Most recently, Picard was awarded 2nd place at the Parmigiani Montreux Jazz Piano Solo Competition in 2014 and was named one of the 12 upcoming artists for the Montreux Jazz Academy. During his time in NYC, Picard was featured in a solo piano album which also included Dan Tepfer and Kevin Hays. As a side project Picard has released an EP on Origami Sound (Romania) under the alias ‘JAONA’ which was released in September 2014, with critical acclaim. Currently, in his third year at Juilliard School education, Picard is a recipient of the Nina Carasso Foundation Scholarship.
