our Lied Center is proud to present an exciting and diverse season packed with the biggest names, the best young musicians, some very adventurous projects and the world’s leading performers. As we continue our tradition of presenting internationally renowned artists and compelling engagement activities, we look forward to establishing new and reinvigorating existing partnerships. One new project this season is the Jayhawk Live series, which shines the spotlight on campus luminaries and our wonderful KU School of Music student ensembles with special guests. We are also thrilled to enhance our campus relationships by formalizing partnerships with Student Union Activities and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. Together, we will be able to better serve our campus and the greater Lawrence community. I’d love to hear from you. Please feel free to email me regarding artists you’d like to see and thanks to all of you, especially the Friends of the Lied, for your support. Please remember: take care of the arts and the arts will take care of you!

Engagement & Education
Beyond the Stage The arts can be a gateway to discovery, learning and mutual understanding. Through the center’s Engagement and Education program, it connects with community members, young and old, in creative and meaningful ways.
New Educator Opportunities
“I’m excited to be involved in the outstanding education programs provided for free to preschool through college students. The variety of performances and activities at the Lied Center make it a great place for all ages.”
Marilyn McCleary 2014–15 Friends of the Lied Board President
The Lied Center is proud to be working with USD 497 on new opportunities for educators. This year’s collaborations will concentrate on helping teachers meet the Common Core State Standards and the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) goals. This season, artistic directors from Los Angeles’ 24th Street Theatre Company will present an integrative teacher’s workshop addressing Common Core Language Standards. In addition, early elementary school teachers and Kansas teaching artists will partner to create lesson plans and curriculum using the performance of The Ugly Duckling & The Tortoise and the Hare as inspiration.
KU Students: Join SUA
The SUA Board is a student organization that plans events for the entire KU community, including the Lied Center. Visit suaevents.com for more information about this great organization and how you can get involved.
Mini-Documentary Project The Lied Center’s newest adventure includes embarking on a video project to capture the impact of the center’s major Engagement and Education projects and bring them to a wider audience.
Inspiring Creativity through the Performing Arts Preschool through high school students Preschool and grade school children can look forward to attending a free age‑appropriate performance at the Lied Center. Many students have the opportunity to meet with visiting artists in the classroom. Demonstrations and discussions allow students to engage directly with professional artists. Students also work with the Lied Center on a variety of special projects aimed at enhancing their learning experience.
University students and adults This season, students from the KU School of Music and Haskell Indian Nations University will have the opportunity to perform on the Lied Center stage with professional artists. Visiting artists will also present master classes and lecture-demonstrations for students in a variety of disciplines. KU and Haskell professors may request $5 tickets for their students if they connect a performance to their class curriculum. For specific performances and more information, visit lied.ku.edu/season/forms. For students of all ages, the Lied Center frequently offers free pre- and post‑performance discussions about the performance, the art form or the artist. The Lied Center is partnering with the The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute to present lectures and engagement opportunities for their members.

There will be no intermission during this performance.
The Ugly Duckling & The Tortoise and The Hare
The Ugly Duckling Of the five eggs in Mother Duck’s nest, one is the largest and last to hatch. Bigger and paler than the others, this last hatchling is treated as an outsider by Mother Duck and her ducklings. He may be the best swimmer of the brood, but this alone is not enough to ensure his acceptance. Knowing only rejection, this Ugly Duckling goes out into the wild alone. Reflecting upon his plight under the glow of a remote willow tree, he sees a wily cat creeping in the direction of Mother Duck’s nest. The Ugly Duckling follows and watches as one lagging duckling is captured and taken back to the cat’s lair. In true heroic fashion, this Ugly Duckling succeeds in vanquishing the cat and rescuing the captured duckling. Celebrated by Mother Duck and her ducklings for his uniqueness, all realize that he may have been an ugly duckling, but he has grown into a beautiful and powerful swan.
The Tortoise and the Hare Ridiculed by the Hare, the Tortoise challenges him to a race. They set off and the Hare takes a commanding lead right away. Thinking he will win easily, the Hare allows himself to be distracted
with many modern day activities: texting, video games and the paparazzi, of course. The Tortoise continues to trudge along at his methodical pace and, despite the fact that the Hare is a swifter creature, wins the race due to his discipline and fortitude.

Friends help ensure world-class performing arts are available in the KU and Lawrence communities. The Lied Center is the place to see the world’s top artists. This season, our stage will be home to stars from Austria, Brazil, Italy, New Zealand, Japan, Canada, China and from New York to Los Angeles.
Your donation helps keep ticket prices affordable. Did you know that Lied Center ticket sales provide less than 40% of the funding needed to bring world-class artists to Lawrence? By offsetting ticket costs, Friends help make the performing arts accessible to the people of Kansas.
Friends help the next generation of performing arts lovers experience the best in children’s programming for free. This year, nearly 7,000 children in our community will experience the transformative power of the arts during school-only performances thanks, in part, to Friends donations.
