A Bridget Everett Day in MHK

Bridget Everett is a Manhattan native. She is a comedian currently performing in New York City and the star of HBO series, Somebody, Somewhere. Growing up in Manhattan Bridget has many favorite places she loves to share with her fans. Spend a Bridget Everett day in MHK by following this itinerary packed full of fun attractions and great food!

Start your morning out at The Chef. One of Manhattan’s favorite local cafe’s, The Chef serves up a mighty good menu packed full of all your favorite breakfast dishes and then some.

After brunch continue down Poyntz Ave to discover the history, shopping and entertainment Downtown Manhattan has to offer. From home furnishings, axe throwing, chic clothing and gallery artworks, there is something for everyone in Downtown MHK.

Get a few more steps in as you head over to K-State campus with a walk around KSU Memorial Stadium. Experience the arts and catch a show at the Purple Masque Theater or McCain Auditorium.

Find a collection of classic cars like you’ve never seen before at the Midwest Dream Car Collection. Have a look around, and flag down one of the curators for the inside scoop on each of the vehicles.

Drawing on recipes, ingredients and techniques of old, Nico’s Little Italy, located in Aggieville, brings the best of the Motherland to Manhattan. GOOD TIMES AT GOOLSBY’S

Pour your own pilsner, IPA or any of the 30 different ales from the beer wall at Goolsby’s, located in Aggieville inside the Bluemont Hotel. Founded and owned by former K-State football player Denzel Goolsby, this unique eatery also has a ton of interactive games, including Duckpin Bowling and multi-sport simulators. Radina’s Bakehouse, in the Blue Earth Plaza, is home to the most amazing fresh-baked bread Manhattan has to offer.

In Aggieville, Bluestem Bistro features flavor-packed coffee, cappuccino, espresso and freshly made sandwiches and pastries.

Locals love to gather over their coffee cups, iced lattes, music and conversation at Brothers Coffee Company on Anderson Avenue.

Arrow Coffee, at the corner of Claflin and Denison, makes Manhattan’s favorite pour-over brew. Chai Latte and Cold Brews are house specialties, plus freshmade treats. At night, enjoy Arrow’s premium cocktail menu.

Varsity Donuts in Aggieville is Manhattan’s first and foremost gourmet doughnut shop. Try the Maple Bacon Bar, a blueberry Opal or luscious New Boston Cream.

Manhattan’s largest wine cellar, The Wine Dive + Kitchen, located downtown, features elegant meals with locally-sourced ingredients. At Liquid Art Winery enjoy majestic views of the Flint Hills and a glass of Liquid Art wine. Just west of town proprietors Dave and Dani create great wine as well as their own hard ciders.

Family-owned and a vintage classic, Vista Drive In on Tuttle Creek Boulevard serves burgers, corn dogs and their signature dessert, the famous hot fudge brownie á la mode.

Aggieville’s burger joint Kite’s has a long menu and delicious history of slinging specialty burgers, including the scrumptious Mac N Cheese Stuff Burger.

FOOD TRUCK FRENZY

Locals love the quick and tasty bites from the Manhattan-area food trucks, and you will too! Check their Facebook pages for a current schedule.

The Tasty Traveler stops each day at various locations throughout the town. Known for mouth-watering bierocks, wraps and appetizers.

On Tuttle Creek Boulevard near Kimball Ave., Taqueria Los Burritos offers the city’s most authentic Mexican cuisine. Locals and visitors alike rave about the fish tacos, tamales and quesadillas.

Smokin’ Willie’s BBQ ribs are fall-off-the-bone tender and made with Willie’s secret spice blend rub. Ask about the

brisket, pulled pork and baked beans, but don’t delay, they sell out fast!

Need a little kick in your lunch? Try Jammin’ Jamaican Cuisine’s jerk chicken or spicy ribs. With their giant portions and ample side dishes, you won’t go away hungry.

Frida’s The True Mexican Taste located at 900 N. 3rd St. serves traditional made from scratch Mexican dishes. Stop by and try their Gordita.

The Fabulous Flint Hills

PRAIRIE HIKES ON THE KONZA

Hikers and nature enthusiasts marvel at the splendor of the Konza Prairie while exploring one of the preserve’s three nature trails ranging from 2.6 miles to 6.2 miles. Wildlife living here includes more than 200 animal species, 600 species of flora, and a herd of approximately 250 bison. Jointly owned by Kansas State University and The Nature Conservancy and operated by the university’s Division of Biology, most of the Konza’s land has never been touched by a plow. Natural vistas are the same as those seen by pioneers and Native Americans hundreds of years ago when bison roamed. The trails are open daily. Pets are prohibited. $2 contribution suggested.

PRAIRIE PLANTS

The rugged beauty of Flint Hills flora and fauna is on display throughout all four seasons. Dozens of flowering plant species unique to the Flint Hills are most visible during two peak periods: mid-May through June, and August through September. In the spring, watch rocky outcrops and ledges for the purple blossoms and sweet fragrance of Rose Verbena. In May and June, look for the Missouri

Evening Primrose in crevices of the flint rock outcroppings. It’s attractive pink bloom closes in the evening and opens again in the morning. In the summer, spot Prairie Coneflower, a relative of Kansas’ state flower, the Sunflower. This bloom has bright yellow blossoms and an extended seedhead, which feeds birds and small mammals. More than 600 plant species call the Flint Hills home.

PADDLE ALL DAY

Experience the serene beauty of our National Water Trail, the Kansas River, by canoe or kayak. Called “the Kaw” by locals, our section of this 173mile prairie-based river features a braided channel during low flow. There are several access points near Manhattan which allow you to enjoy a couple hours or multiple days on the river. Other paddling options include the River Pond at Tuttle Creek State Park and Pottawatomie County State Lake 2, just east of Manhattan.

Visitors love the more than 50+ campsites, cabins, birdwatching opportunities, hunting and other outdoor recreation at Tuttle Creek State Park. Tuttle Creek Lake has nearly 11,000 acres of water, perfect for waterskiing and fishing fun. You’ll want to check out Wildcat Marina, which has watercraft rentals, bait, tackle and food supplies.

PILLSBURY CROSSING: A HIDDEN GEM

Nestled in the Deep Creek Valley seven miles southeast of Manhattan is the 60-acre Pillsbury Crossing Wildlife Area, named after early pioneer J.H. Pillsbury. The pristine waters of Deep Creek lead to the 60-foot wide, five-foot tall Deep Creek Waterfall (weather permitting), making this one of the area’s most popular areas for relaxing, fishing, and short trail hikes. Pillsbury Crossing is a must-see for the outdoors enthusiast.

MAY THE COURSE BE WITH YOU…

Disc golf aficionados have four course choices in Manhattan. Tuttle Creek Family Disc Golf Course is known for its short, yet challenging holes. River Pond Disc Course is longer with a tremendous view of River Pond. Warner Park’s 9-hole course provides a great view of the Flint Hills, while the 18-hole course in Fairmont Park is a hidden gem on Manhattan’s Southeast side.

ZIPPIN’ AROUND

Thrill-seekers head to Wildwood Adventure Park to zip high above a plunging limestone canyon. Some zipline runs stretch a quarter-mile and are tandem runs. Finish in a guide-monitored, free-fall back to the ground. Wind down at sunset sipping wines at Liquid Art Winery. Plot team strategies to escape and solve a mystery at Locked Manhattan, an escape room adventure. Kids of all ages love the state’s top-ranked Sunset Zoo.

LET’S GET ROLLING

Manhattan’s rolling landscape presents a variety of biking and hiking trails, challenging golf courses and easily accessed waterways for boating, fishing and paddling. Linear Trail winds past the old train depot, along the Kansas River and traverses the eastern, western and southern portions of the city. Walking trails at City Park and Anneberg Park offer a change in scenery and skill level.

TAKE A DIP!

Families flock to Manhattan’s water parks sprinkled throughout the city. City Park Waterpark’s lazy river, slides and diving boards are fun for all ages. CiCo Park Waterpark features a family slide, low dive, and rock climbing wall. Northview Pool offers a variety of water features including twisting slides, splash zones and lazy rivers. Refreshing and free, City Park Splash Park and Blue Earth Plaza Splash Park guarantee hours of family fun and frolic.

6 FLINT HILLS FUN FACTS

1. Humans have lived in the Flint Hills for more than 13,000 years.

2. Just 4% of North America’s tallgrass prairie remains and the largest piece is in the Flint Hills.

3. Grasses in the Flint Hills can grow 10-feet tall, and roots may extend 15feet into the soil.

4. The Flint Hills were formed over 250 million years ago when shallow seas covered the region. Fossils show signs of sea and plant life from this era in the limestone.

5. Manhattan is known for its white stone buildings made of the region’s native Cottonwood Limestone. Built in 1879, Anderson Hall on the Kansas State University campus and the Riley County Courthouse on Poyntz, completed in 1906, are two magnificent examples.

6. Folk hero Johnny Kaw carved the Kansas River with his scythe and whipped all challengers in feats of daring and strength. A 25-foot tall statue of Johnny Kaw towers above Manhattan’s City Park.

Experience the sights, sounds, and smells of the prairie re-created with stunning authenticity in the 4-D immersive theater experience, Tallgrass Prairie: Tides of Time. Or take a stroll through the Prairie Garden Terrace and Trail to see beautifully landscaped native prairie grasses and wildflowers.

Explore the new Prairie Playscape hands-on exhibit for kids. Design a model railway, build a stone fence, jump on a saddle, crawl through the prairie climber –this brand-new space combines science and culture to inspire young minds and encourages kids to explore the wonder of the Flint Hills.

Custom cars, muscle cars, exotics and classics are all on display at the Midwest Dream Car Collection, the region’s largest collection of fine automobiles. Established in 2019, the museum has more than 65 vehicles on display, with the collection revolving constantly. Enjoy the lecture and program series, or secure the venue for an unforgettable private event.

SUNSET ZOO

Manhattan’s award-winning Sunset Zoo features all your favorite animals from an amur leopard to a giant anteater. The brand new Expedition Asia experience adds a world class experience to rediscover tigers, sloth bears and leopards. Special events include Party for the Planet, Earth Day, Water Safari and SPOOKtacular, a familyfriendly Halloween event.

THE GARDENS AND INSECT ZOO

Kansas State University’s Botanical Gardens, located at the iconic Dairy Barn on the north side of the K-State campus, is home to native flowers and a vast collection of Flint Hills favorites, including irises, peonies and roses. Spend hours exploring the beautifully curated grounds, featuring rest spots, statues and fountains. Visit the Insect Zoo in the historic Dairy Barn. Interactive displays showcase the sights, sounds and smells of your favorite creepy crawlies, including Amazonian insects, bees and an assortment of tarantulas and spiders.

Golfers of all levels discover challenges at Manhattan’s public golf courses. Rolling fairways and well-manicured greens welcome players to Colbert Hills, ranked since its opening in 2000 by Golf Digest as the best public course in Kansas. Wide fairways showcase stunning Flint Hills views. Colbert Hills hosts a tournament yearly for golfers competing to earn a spot on the prestigious PGA Tour.

Former PGA pro and K-State alum, Jim Colbert, was instrumental in the course design. Located on the northwest side of town, Jim Colbert says a good hamburger is a hallmark of every good golf course clubhouse.

Stagg Hill Golf Club flanks the Kansas River and demands precision shot-making. Be ready for tricky dogleg holes and tight fairways lined with towering oaks and cottonwoods on this beautiful, 80-year-old course. The scenic 9-hole course at Wildcat Golf and Fitness also features mini golf.

Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art is home for the Flint Hills region’s cultural achievements. Called “The Beach” by locals, this campus museum displays collections by Kansas natives such as John Steuart Curry and photography by Kansas native, Jim Richardson. Most exhibits illustrate traditional and contemporary artwork that capture the essence of Midwest life.

SNW Gallery & Custom Frames located downtown is the state’s oldest commercial gallery, featuring paintings, sculptures and jewelry by Kansas artists.

LIVE PERFORMANCES

Manhattan Arts Center on Poyntz Avenue, where dramatic theater and musical productions abound, featuring local talent for spring and fall productions. You’ll soak up local art exhibits and live music at this Manhattan treasure.

McCain Auditorium at Kansas State University hosts an annual performance series featuring major performers and critically acclaimed stage productions. Landon Lectures at McCain showcase notable newsmakers and political leaders.

Tag yourself and your friends at any of Manhattan’s growing number of murals. From the Ruth Bader Ginsburg mural on Fourth Street to the “I Love You Little Apple” mural on Moro Street, Manhattan’s mural madness offers splashes of color and imagery to stir your imagination and connect with our community through art.

Anotações

This mural started Manhattan’s mural movement by Incite MHK in 2019. Created by the Brazilian mural Bicicleta Sem Freio, the mural occupies an entire wall, overlooking the AJ’s Pizzeria patio. It is an awe-inspiring work depicting a young woman reading and writing.

Beginning From an End

At one point the tallgrass prairie was a massive ecosystem, stretching from Mexico to Canada, full of flora and fauna. As time went on, and humans developed, the land was plowed leaving the last remaining tallgrass prairie in all North America in the Flint Hills of Kansas. This mural is located south of The Chef Café on Fourth Street and was created by artist Joe Renda Jr.

The Kitty Castle

Located west of The Chef Café on Fourth Street, the Kitty Castle was completed by nationally known artist Nick “Sick” Fisher in 2021. Depicting a cat playing with a ball of yarn on a huge cat toy, the Kitty Castle is one of three murals in the alley, the others including ’Sup and the Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

She Takes Her Time

A common beloved pet is suspended in a landscape that once was a flourishing seaway. As water droplets fall onto the desolate land life grows from its soil. This gesture sets off a chain reaction and reminds us that we can make positive changes through the smallest acts. Located in the alley behind 11th & Moro St. Created by artist Kate Lynn Lewis.

One night back on June 25, 2017, after a local music festival orchestrated by Mauricio Caldera, he left his mark for all of us to enjoy. And we couldn’t agree more, “I love you little apple!”

The mural is located on the Charlson Wilson building at 111 N 4th St created by Louis Copt, assisted by ITRA Icons. It features a large corner fencepost of native limestone which depicts a Flint Hills evening during a prairie burn.

Heritage

Manhattan’s beginnings began on April 27, 1855 when the Cincinnati and Kansas Land Company departed Cincinnati, Ohio on the Steamboat Hartford. The plan was to found an abolitionist community. A new town of Boston was already established when the Steamboat ran aground. The Bostonians liked the new arrivals, convinced them to stay and Manhattan became the town’s name.

RILEY COUNTY HISTORICAL MUSEUM

Begin your tour of historic Manhattan and Riley County here, where you’ll discover Manhattan’s past through changing exhibits and priceless artifacts on permanent display. Open daily.

GOODNOW HOUSE

STATE HISTORICAL SITE

In 1855, abolitionists Isaac and Ellen Goodnow founded Manhattan on the common principles of freedom and education. Their home located next to Riley County Historical Museum was built in 1861, contains Victorian-era furniture, and is open for tours.

HARTFORD HOUSE

Pre-fabricated homes were part of steamboats carrying passengers west. The Hartford House is located at 2301 Claflin Avenue and was originally assembled near 5th and Colorado Streets. About 50 years ago the home was to Riley County Historical Museum. Hours vary.

FORT RILEY

Fort Riley opened in 1853 as a frontier Army installation to protect pioneers traveling on wagon trails heading west. Today, Fort Riley’s workday population exceeds 20,000 military and on-post, private-contract employees. The post contributes $2 billion to Manhattan and Kansas economies.

PIONEER LOG CABIN

The cornerstone for this pioneer cabin was laid in 1915 and incorporated stone from the first building constructed at what is now Kansas State University. Built using walnut logs, the cabin illustrates a typical Riley County pioneer period home. Located in City Park, open seasonally.

WOLF HOUSE MUSEUM

Built in 1868, this two-story, limestone home was originally used as a boarding house and then a private dwelling owned by the Wolf family before it became a museum in 1983.

One of the most popular phrases among Wildcats fans is “EMAW,” or “Every Man a Wildcat.” A battle cry for decades of K-State athletics, fans unite behind the slogan which declares they are part of the Wildcat Nation. You’ll love rocking to and fro to the Wabash Cannonball, played loud and often by the K-State Marching Band. ESPN named it the “best pre-game tradition in the Big 12 Conference.”

GAME DAY

Wildcat Fans. ARE. YOU. READY?! The kick off calling of the Kansas State University Wildcats. Get your gameday vibe going dressed head-totoe in purple, the Wildcats’ favorite color, with a trip to Rally House in Aggieville, the K-State Superstore on McCall Road or K-State’s Student Union Bookstore.

The Sudler-Award-winning K-State Marching Band, known as the “Pride of Wildcat Land,” will get your heart racing and feet stomping as they pub crawl throughout Aggieville and other parts of town the night before games, playing Wildcat fan favorites.

Do you live to tailgate? You’ll love the ribs, brisket and pulled pork at Cox Bros BBQ. Plan to celebrate post-game victories at pubs located in Aggieville, Westloop or Downtown Manhattan.

AGGIEVILLE CELEBRATIONS

Before or after the game, Aggieville is where Wildcats gather. Eat, drink, play and shop at the more than 100 shops, restaurants and hangouts. Home to the annual Homecoming Parade, throngs of visitors come to Aggieville to celebrate their Alma Mater. Fight, you K-State Wildcats!

REGIONAL VISITS

PAXICO

Antique stores abound in this tiny town 20 minutes east of Manhattan off I-70. You’ll see many preserved Victorian-era buildings. In September, Paxico hosts the annual Blues Festival.

COTTONWOOD FALLS

Located one hour south of Manhattan on Kansas Highway 177, find Kansas’ oldest operating Chase Count courthouse, the Grand Central Hotel and Restaurant and Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve.

FORT RILEY

Ten minutes west of Manhattan, Fort Riley is home to the 1st Infantry Division called “The Big Red One.” 1ID is the U.S. Army’s oldest division created during World War I. Visitors must present photo ID.

MARYSVILLE

An hour north of Manhattan is Pony Express Home Station No. 1, the first stop on the legendary run. Visitors enjoy the Doll House Museum’s collection of antique and modern toys.

COUNCIL GROVE

There are 24 nationallyregistered historical sites in this community, 40 minutes south of Manhattan on Kansas Highway 177. Delight in great food at The Hays House, and enjoy small-town shopping.

WAMEGO

Learn about the Land of Oz at the Oz Museum or enjoy one of the small town’s many festivals. Experience the largest Independence Day Celebration in the Midwest, all in Wamego, 15 minutes east of Manhattan.

CLAY CENTER

This small town in north-central Kansas, just 35 miles from the Tuttle Creek Lake area of Manhattan, is known as the geographic midpoint between New York City and Los Angeles. With their wide range of vibrant murals, there’s plenty to see and experience in Clay Center.

WABAUNSEE COUNTY

Find the Beecher Bible and Rifle Church, Alma Creamery, a family-run cheese plant and Volland store with Midwest-inspired art exhibits 10-30 minutes east of Manhattan.

WAKEFIELD
