As A Shear Thing celebrates 20 years, owner Becky Weir-MacInnis reflects on growing up in her business

I
n 1997, Bonner Springs-native Becky Weir-MacInnis was on the cusp of turning 21 when she walked into the Gold Bank that sat on the corner of Pflumm and Shawnee Mission Parkway. A 1991 beauty school grad who worked for six years at a JCPenney salon, Weir-MacInnis met with Jack Waters, bank president and a well-known Shawnee developer, to discuss a loan for her dream: salon ownership. “I didn’t have a business plan, but I had spark and vision, and Jack believed in that,” Weir-MacInnis says. “I knew two things: Opening a salon was the right thing to do at that point in my young career and I wanted my business to be in Shawnee. Coming from a small town, I related to the city’s vibe.”

A Shear Thing opened, unceremoniously, at 9 a.m. April 26, 1997, mere hours after Weir-MacInnis put finishing touches on the salon. Never one to shy away from challenge, Weir-MacInnis’ first day in business coincided with prom for the Shawnee Mission School District—a day when many salons are a beehive of activity. She and her two employees worked magic on a constant stream of eager customers that spring day, and by closing time, 24 heads of hair had been styled to perfection. Things haven’t slowed down since for A Shear Thing—or for Weir-MacInnis. Today, 15 employees, including a front desk coordinator, manager, bookkeeper, hairstylists and nail techs, work at the salon. Despite inevitable growing pains and occasional selfdoubts, Weir-MacInnis wouldn’t change the decision she made as an inexperienced entrepreneur 20 years ago. “I’m passionate, devoted and ambitious,” Weir-MacInnis says. This is the work ethic instilled in her by her parents. “If there’s been one constant over the past two decades, it’s the question I ask myself every day: ‘What can I do to make it better?’” Weir-MacInnis invests in each employee she hires, offering intensive training and education to help them succeed in the competitive industry. “You can’t teach passion or personality, though,” she says. “Those qualities are innately part of a person, and over the years I’ve developed the ability to identify that in people I invite to join my team.” Standards are high at A Shear Thing—Weir-MacInnis expects each employee to go above and beyond, to provide exemplary guest service and to love what they do. “It’s the passion that’s carried me through the valleys,” she says. “The support of my family, my husband, Dean, and my two children, Parker and Sophia, and the relationships I’ve established

Wigs for Kids Becky Weir-MacInnis’ guest philosophy at A Shear Thing is pretty straightforward: You can change someone’s day by making them feel better about how they look. Thousands of haircuts and colors have been given in the salon over the past 20 years, but perhaps the guests Weir-MacInnis cherishes most—and who have a piece of her big heart—are the kids with temporary hair loss who come in for wig fittings as a result of treatment for cancer or other medical issues. “We’re a Wigs for Kids sponsor, which means that a child facing hair loss can, free of charge, be fitted with a custom hair replacement piece,” she explains. “One recent Friday evening I stayed at the salon until 9:30 p.m., working with a 6-year-old girl and her mom to get the cut and style just right. The service we offer these kids means boosted self-confidence and self-esteem. That’s priceless to me—to help change a child’s physical appearance and how they feel about themselves inside.” Weir-MacInnis’ involvement in Wigs for Kids fulfills her on many levels. “In this business, authentic, face-to-face connection and genuine communication are vital,” she says. “And as cruel as the world gets, I always fantasize about changing people, one style at a time. I know it’s impossible, but that would be my ultimate dream.” Weir-MacInnis and her employees also give time and talent to Safehome, a shelter for women and children, and the salon donates end-of-season items from the boutique and other goods to Shawnee Community Services, a nonprofit that offers food and clothing to those in need. “It’s rewarding and humbling to be able to give back to the community that’s supported you,” Weir-MacInnis says. “And Shawnee has been good to the salon.”

are part of my success. I’ve matured in all areas of owning a business over 20 years—I keep my focus on the guest, and everything else falls into place.” Hair styling, cut and color services are just the beginning of A Shear Thing’s menu. Guests can choose to be pampered by manicures and pedicures and aesthetic services like facials. Weir-MacInnis sells her own cosmetic line, Sophia Cosmetics, and five years ago added a boutique. In addition to the evolution of techniques, styles, products and services Weir-MacInnis has witnessed over 20 years, social media has changed the way the salon markets its services. “The salon has a Facebook page and each stylist is required to have their own,” she says. “We push out messaging on all platforms every day— Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest. Word-of-mouth is still the most important way guests find their way to the salon, but you have to stay on top of social media just like any other element of maintaining your business.” And with 20 years of WeirMacInnis’ dedication and motivation to helping others be the best they can be—whether it’s an employee rising to a master stylist level or the guest sitting in her chair at the salon—the next 20 years in her shop on Shawnee Mission Parkway will be a cut above, too.
Ken Parker entered Becky Weir-MacInnis’ life in 2000 when they traveled the country together as artists and educators for iconic haircare brand Redken. “We were a terrific duo—he designed, I did color,” she says. “I called him my ‘road husband’ and my husband, Dean, really liked him. That was good, because one day while Ken and I were driving to St. Louis for a hair show, he floated the idea of becoming my business partner. He was the most positive person and could find the silver lining in any situation.” Parker came onboard in 2006, and the two started remodeling A Shear Thing, implementing their shared vision. Eight months later, Parker died on a Colorado lake during a family vacation. “He was fishing alone at 5 a.m., enjoying the peace and tranquility of a favorite pastime,” Weir-MacInnis says. “His death was devastating to everyone, but I knew I needed to continue our collaborative vision. To this day I feel Ken’s presence at the salon. He’s still my guide, of sorts.”

F
or Shawnee chiropractor Dr. Michelle Robin, life changed in an instant.
In June 2015, while training for a sprint triathlon, Robin was clipped by a car during an early morning bike ride. “The result was 10 fractures in my pelvis, hip, elbow and thumb,” she wrote in her ebook, Small Changes Big Shifts. “I was laid up and unable to practice chiropractic for many months. The experience thoroughly tested my mind, body and spirit well-being.”
Now, a little more than two years later, Robin isn’t yet at 100 percent—but she’s close. “I’m at about 90 to 95 percent now, and it’s been two years,” she says. “I had the odds in my favor. I was living a well life.” Robin had already launched an integrative health center, Your Wellness Connection, prior to her accident. Yet that unthinkable firsthand experience with long-term recovery—combined with more than two decades as a chiropractor—prompted her to

do even more to bring health and wellness guidance and resources to a larger audience. “When life happens, are you going to put the odds in your favor?” she says. “It’s similar to saving money—the most important thing we can save is our health. I want to spend the money I’m saving on vacations and philanthropy, not on all of this health care. I’m investing in my well-being as I go along so I don’t get a big bill later.”

Small Steps Lead to Big Changes
Anyone who has been on a wellness journey—whether weight loss, managing a chronic condition or dealing with a sudden illness or injury—knows the path to a healthier life can be downright daunting. Instead, Robin focuses on taking small steps that can add up in a big way as part of a four-part approach: mechanical, chemical, energetic and psychological/spiritual. Some examples? “I’m probably not going to tell you anything major you don’t know how to do,” she says. “You just have to say, ‘I’m worth it. I’m going to invest in myself, whether it’s writing a check to get a massage or an adjustment, or taking a walk. What can I do to invest in myself?’” Robin is in the midst of a year-long campaign with Your Wellness Connection to further spread the word about the available resources. By providing a variety of healthrelated resources, including events, her goal is to give people a tool that might just be more important than knowledge: community. “It takes a tribe,” she says. “I think it’s easy to stay engaged in the journey when you know why you’re doing it. You get a plan and have a tribe that helps you stay accountable.” That feeling of community doesn’t help just with accountability—it also helps with intention, which can keep people focused and on the right track, even in challenging situations. “That means we’re going to do it together,” she said. “At a Royals tailgate, for example, you could drink a glass of water between each cocktail, or bring more vegetables to snack on.” Again, the key is incorporating small steps that lead to big changes. And equally as important? An understanding that health and wellness are so much more than a number on the scale. “I think most people have a desire to be happier in their lives,” Robin said. “If you look at the definition of well-being, it means happy. We’re just trying to encourage people to have happier lives. I’ve had the awesome opportunity and responsibility to give guidance to people to take care of their well-being, and I’m just saying thank you.”

“O
h, no. Not again.”
That was Judy Gerling’s first reaction when her son, who owns a Floridabased travel business, called and asked her to join him on a group trip to climb Africa’s Mt. Kilimanjaro. Seventy-one-year-old Gerling, who’s lived in Shawnee for 50 years, is no stranger to hiking. She’s traveled all over the world—to all seven continents, in fact—to hike, explore and sightsee. She also wasn’t a stranger to the soaring peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro, which, at 19,340 feet, is the highest point in Africa and the tallest freestanding mountain in the world. Gerling visited the mountain in 2012 for a climb that didn’t go well; however, after discussing the trip with her son—and hinging her participation on a few considerations—she agreed to return to Kilimanjaro in the fall of 2016.
From Hobby to Habit
Gerling has always loved the outdoors. She remembers, as a child, following her dad while he hunted, “just traipsing in the woods with him.” Following a divorce 26 years ago, Gerling made more time to pursue the activities she loved—namely, hiking. She joined the Kansas City Outdoor Club and participated in hikes around the metro area. She also made a number of new friends, several of whom eventually branched off with Gerling to form their own group. “We travel as a group, so you can have the safety of a group and also have a trip you can afford because you divide everything among the group,” she says. “We’re all compatible and all love the same thing. They became my new life and family, in addition to my three children and 10 grandchildren.” As well as cultivating a love of hiking, Gerling also focuses on creating routines that help her maintain optimal health and mobility. For example, she walks three miles a day, rain or shine. “They say it takes three months to develop a habit,” she says. “With me, I will feel guilty if I don’t get my three miles in every day, so that’s pretty much my priority. If you make priorities and set them, they become a part of your life.” Gerling also finds success in accountability, one of many reasons her hiking group has become such an integral part of her life. “There’s going to be days when you drag yourself out the door, but if you have someone who’s waiting to meet you, that’s the impetus I need to get out the door,” she says. And once outside, surrounded by nature—whether in Kansas City or one of the more than 30 national parks she’s visited, Gerling finds peace and happiness in her surroundings and in the activity. “It’s a natural high, there’s no doubt about it,” she says. “I guess you could say I find my peace and my spirituality outdoors. Everything is enhanced when I’m in the jungle or in the forest or on a mountain. That’s where I like to be.” Gerling also loves the thrill of a challenge, pushing herself to climb higher, steeper trails, or what she calls “grueling hiking”—day-long climbs that are essentially straight up or straight down. It’s that inner drive that prompted Gerling to plan her first climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro in 2012. During the climb, Gerling was less than 3,000 feet shy of the summit she chose to come down the mountain. “The route I used was partially my fault,” she said. “I didn’t research enough that this was the steepest, shortest, most hazardous of the routes. Consequently, I made it to about 17,000 feet, then turned around. I thought I gave it my best shot, and I was OK with it.” That is, until opportunity came knocking again.

How to Start Hiking Seasoned hiker Judy Gerling offered several tips to help new hikers find success. 1. JOIN A GROUP. Gerling recommends using Meetup (www.meetup.com) to find a hiking group in your area. For those in the Kansas City area, try the KC Outdoor Club, the first group Gerling joined. You can also explore resources like the Sierra Club (sierraclub.org). “You’ve got to meet people who are likeminded if you’re going to succeed and do it,” she says. “You’re going to find friends and do it together.” 2. MAKE HIKING OR WALKING A PRIORITY. Gerling says she schedules her whole day around her 3-mile walks. Schedule your walk or hike and stick to it—that’s when it helps to enlist a friend to motivate you to get out the door. 3. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF. Try to get enough sleep and follow good nutrition. Gerling avoids soda and sugary drinks. “Sugar makes you feel about as bad as you can feel,” she says. She has several foods she eats every day: an ounce of nuts, an apple and a handful of blueberries. Find a few of your own healthy favorites and make them daily staples. 4. INVEST IN GOOD GEAR. Head to a sporting goods or outdoor store and get fitted for proper hiking shoes. Gerling is a fan of both Merrill boots and Wright socks. “Knock on wood, I’ve never had a blister in all my years of hiking,” she says. “You have to take good care of your feet.” It’s also important to ensure you have the proper clothing and gear for the climate in which you’ll be hiking, especially if you start to travel or climb into higher altitudes. Never underestimate the importance of layers!

“The Hardest Thing I’ve Ever Done” When Gerling’s son called about climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, she said yes—on several conditions. “I said I’d do this if we chose a different route—the longest one that gives us the most time for acclimatization,” she says. “He agreed; then I thought, ‘I’m locked in!’” Gerling’s son assembled a diverse group of eight hikers to make the journey. Then, Gerling began training. “I walked every day for six months prior,” she says. “I walk every day anyway, but I did a lot more hill climbing in Shawnee instead of just walking on a flat surface.” Gerling also went to the gym 4–5 times per week to use the stair machine, where she’d climb 151 flights of stairs in an hour to improve her endurance and strengthen her leg muscles. Already a healthy eater (thanks partly to a background as a nurse and a desire to prevent illness), Gerling focused on a high carbohydrate, high protein diet while drinking “about 4 to 5 quarts of water a day.” One of the biggest unknowns (and dangers) of climbing a peak like Mt. Kilimanjaro is how an individual will respond to the high altitude. Gerling, having climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro and other smaller mountains before, knew she likely wouldn’t have problems. “You can train all you want, but you don’t know until you get there how you’re going to react in altitude—it’s a big surprise,” she says. “Fortunately, I had very little problems with the altitude—not even a headache.” Once the group arrived in Africa, they had around two days to conquer jet lag before the climb began. The climbers were accompanied by porters, who fulfill several key responsibilities: carrying the gear, setting up camp and preparing meals. “I couldn’t have done it without the porters,” Gerling says. “They make it feasible to try the climb.”
An interesting thing about climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro is that climbers will pass through five climate zones on their way to the peak. Gerling says they started out in a “very tropical environment” before ascending above the treeline into what’s called the moorland. From there, climbers proceed into an arid desert, then alpine desert and, finally, the Arctic zone. The day that Gerling’s group reached the Arctic zone, the wind chill plummeted to 15 degrees below zero. “It’s very cold and snowy, and the air is extremely thin,” she says. “You really struggle to breathe, so you just go very slowly. It definitely becomes a mental thing after a certain height.” Gerling and her fellow climbers opted for the Lemosho route, which is the longest route to the top of the mountain. They climbed around 2,000 feet for seven days and, on the final day, climbed at night. The final leg was grueling, but the awaiting reward made all of the physical and mental work worthwhile. “That final night that you summit, you leave camp about 11 at night and it takes about seven hours to make it to the top,” she says. “You try to get to the top before sunrise so you can view the sunrise from that altitude, which is magnificent. Then, you’ve got to get back down because you break camp, then go down 2,000 more feet for the night.” Gerling says the climb is the hardest thing she’s ever done, but it was also “exhilarating. It was one of those things where you can’t actually believe you’re there.” Reaching the mountain’s summit was a tremendous accomplishment; for Gerling, it was made even more special because she shared it with her son. “My son asked me how I did this twice,” she says with a laugh. “He thought it was so terrible and cold in the tent. We had a lot of mother/son bonding time—lots of conversation.” Gerling and her son aren’t the only hikers in the family. Just a few weeks ago, Gerling flew to Denver to climb Mt. Bierstadt, a

14,060-foot peak, with her daughter and two daughters-in-law. “I’ve been suggesting we do this before I get too old to hike,” she says. “Since I did Mt. Kilimanjaro with one of my sons, I wanted to get my daughter involved. We came up with a weekend when we could all meet, and it’s a bucket list item.”

There’s no doubt that Gerling’s accomplishments have inspired others, including her friends and family. Yet for Gerling, the point isn’t to achieve a particular goal or conquer a specific mountain; it is to create a better quality of life. “I don’t know how long I’m going to live, but I want to be in the best health possible for as long as I live,” she says. “I know what I’ve got to do to maintain that goal and it can’t be sitting on this couch.” And besides—Gerling still has places to go. Despite visiting all seven continents, she still has several locations on her travel bucket list. At the top? Iceland. As for other, higher mountains? She’ll pass. “I don’t have any desire to climb Mt. Everest,” she says with a laugh. “I make that known right away.”

n addition to being mayor, Michelle Distler is a lifelong Shawnee resident, mother, full time security analyst and volunteer with several organizations. Here, Mayor Distler talks about her passion for Shawnee, why it’s important to work with community organizations and how her life has changed for the better as mayor.
Defense on behalf of the City of Shawnee. During lunch, Major General Tafanelli invited me to a refueling mission of the Air Force Kansas Air National Guard. During the mission, we refueled a B-52 over Arkansas in a KC-135 stratotanker at 400mph! Additionally, I got to take the trip of a lifetime to visit our sister cities in Erfurt, Germany, and Pittem, Belgium.
SM: Why did you want to become mayor? MD: Becoming mayor happened because of the infinite love I have for Shawnee’s past, present, and future. I care deeply about protecting that history as well as the future and want every resident to feel as though they have a voice and are heard and that we are working together. I have always responded and been accessible.
SM: What other experiences have you had as part of your mayoral mission that give back to the community? Why are those important? MD: I volunteer for several organizations. I am a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary and one very important event that my daughter Jeydan and I volunteer at every year is putting the flags up and taking them down for Flags for Freedom. I love driving down Johnson Drive and seeing all the flags flying; it invokes such pride in me to see that sea of patriotic colors. I am one of the founding members of Shawnee’s Community Emergency Response Team and have several hours of FEMA training to be able to help in case of emergency. Additionally I am HAM radio- and CPR-certified in case something was to happen while I am out and about in the community. I am a member of the Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni Association and volunteer every opportunity with our amazing police department, whether that means helping with traffic, role playing, or a DUI checkpoint. I have two miles of highway that I adopted and clean in memory of my uncle Jerry. I’ve done a lot of work for Special Olympics over the years including teaching job skills, fundraising, photography, graphic design, or volunteering at their events. The American Diabetes Association is also close to my heart, so I have volunteered over the years for that organization as well. I also adopt rescue animals.
SM: What is the best part of being mayor? MD: Those moments when you feel like you have made a difference with someone and you were able to do something to help them. I have been overwhelmed with emotion a few times since becoming mayor. Once when I could give the opportunity to a very special man to light the mayor’s Christmas tree, to see the pure joy in his eyes. I also had the opportunity to meet Charles Goslin, Shawnee’s amazing artist, whose work I have loved my entire life. He shared stories of Shawnee’s past and, unknown to me, painted me into his beautiful historical mural at city hall. Another time was when employees joined at city hall and sang “Happy Birthday” to me and surprised me with a post on Facebook. SM: What is something you would not have been able to do if you weren’t mayor? MD: I had the opportunity to go to the Pentagon to accept the Freedom Award from the Department of
I have donated my hair to Locks of Love a few times, and this year I donated my hair to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths for women fighting cancer. I’ve donated over 10 feet of hair over the past several years to a few different organizations. SM: Why are hands-on experiences as the mayor important to you? MD: They started out as a way for me to experience the jobs that city personnel do for our city. It did not matter if it was hot, raining, cold, or that I was eaten alive with hundreds of chigger bites, I wanted to shadow them and experience their day. We have the best of the best in Shawnee, and I am so proud of the work they do. I have experienced almost every job within the city. While they are humble and will tell you they are “just doing their job,” I was awestruck at the job they do. SM: How are you putting your personal touch on the position of mayor? MD: Some things I implemented in my first year to recognize the good in Shawnee include a coin that I give for special recognition. I give “You’ve been spotted by the Mayor” cards when someone provides great service. During monthly coffees and quarterly Q&As, I give residents updates on the city. For elementary students, I started the guest councilmember program so they can come be involved in local government. For older students, an essay contest to become mayor for a day. I implemented the Good Neighbor Award; I send notes for things being celebrated, personally welcome new businesses, opened the state of the city to the public, and many other things to recognize and encourage good. The world needs more good—why not start in Shawnee?

25 California transplant Karen Sullivan is the last person you’d expect to be a sweater mitten expert. But after moving to the Kansas City area in 1998, she learned how to create toasty hand warmers out of meteorological necessity. “My son, Sam, played youth and high school football for 12 years, and my fellow football moms and I huddled in the stands in all kinds of weather,” Sullivan explains. “Some nights, watching our sons play, we were freezing. I started fashioning mittens from fleece in orange and black when he played at Shawnee Mission Northwest. We were instantly recognizable as players’ moms on cold, crisp nights.” Inspired by Pinterest, Sullivan revived the minimal sewing skills she acquired during junior high and high school home economics classes to make “softies,” a common European reference to stuffed animals. She added cozy mittens into the mix, and in 2011, her casual pastime of making animals and mittens as gifts for friends or selling them at a breakeven cost transformed into an actual business. “I made it official as far as a business venture and focused on making mittens, but wanted to keep softies as part of the name,” she says. “At one point or another everyone with the last name of Sullivan gets called Sully.” And so, in 2016, Sully’s Softies was born. Sullivan is a Shawnee resident along with her husband, John, and spends Monday through Friday as the fitness and wellness director at the Kansas City Country Club, a job she cherishes. During her spare time, she sews mittens from upcycled wool sweaters she finds during regular thrifting expeditions. Her tool of choice is one of two vintage Bernina sewing machines—“Those machines are absolute workhorses—I have two for insurance, in case one breaks down,” Sullivan says. The studio where she spends time crafting mittens and other products like cat toys, pin cushions, headbands and even potholders isn’t fancy—she commandeered son Sam’s former office adjacent to his bedroom once he started college at William Jewell in Liberty, Missouri, and Sullivan transformed it into a functional yet creative workshop. “I have to confess that the Sully’s Softies operation has spilled over into his bedroom, too,” says Sullivan, who estimates she’s made more than 1,000 pairs of mittens since 2011. “I clean up the annex to my business when he comes home for the summer.” Tidying up is no small task for Sullivan. Because she uses 100 percent wool sweaters purchased from thrift stores such as Shawnee’s Goodwill Industries, the stray fibers from cutting the wool into mittens collects rapidly. “Every couple of weeks I have to do a deep-clean vacuum,” Sullivan says, “and even then, it’s impossible to get every surface clear of the wool. I dream about making my studio Pinterest-worthy, though no one’s craft room is really that perfect, right?” Sully’s Softies customers hail from across the country, but Sullivan notes that people in coldweather states are especially attracted to her sweater mittens. “I receive lots of orders from Michigan, Maine, Minnesota, Massachusetts,” she says. “And a couple of years ago when Boston experienced a big snowfall, Sully’s Softies received a surge in business. East Coasters love the sweater mittens—it’s a style of mitten they’re used to, thick and heavy.” Sullivan’s mittens are each one-of-a-kind, thanks to the different sweaters she uses. Each pair is adorned with some type of embroidery or a heart or peace sign embellishment. “Happy mittens,” says Sullivan, who by nature is a kind and positive person and careful to produce a product that exemplifies her own life philosophy. Sully’s Softies are sold online at Sullivan’s Etsy shop and eBay; she’s also an active member of the Instagram community where customers can see her products and reach out to place an order. One unexpected byproduct of turning Sully’s Softies into an e-commerce-based business is the social community Sullivan encountered and has subsequently embraced. Issues with her embroidery machine? Sullivan relies on internet forums for tips and tricks. Advice on building an Etsy shop or an eBay store? There are plenty of people in groups that offer solopreneurs sage advice. Setting up PayPal? Check.
Mitten Magic Sully’s Softies mittens are impeccably designed to last many seasons and sewn for everyone from toddlers to teens and adults, including men and women. Unlike most mittens, Karen Sullivan’s creations are actually three mittens in one. “Mine are differentiated from many sold because of the double lining with soft Sherpa fleece inside,” Sullivan says. “I also felt the wool, a process that allows the fibers to bind, keeping the wool from unraveling. Sully’s Softies are wind resistant and waterproof— essential qualities if you’re standing at a wicked cold high school stadium or cheering on the Chiefs at Arrowhead or playing in the snow.” Sullivan is passionate about helping people and making them feel comfortable, whether it’s in her chosen career as a fitness and wellness director or as her alter-ego, Sully’s Softies. “It gives me great pleasure to make a quality product that people buy for themselves or as gifts,” she says.

Sullivan even started a group of artisans who exclusively make their products from wool; they offer one another encouragement, solution, inspiration and motivation. “At first, setting up the backend of the business seemed insurmountable, until I started connecting with other people who had the same questions,” Sullivan says. “Meeting fellow Kansas City-area makers, too, is priceless. Many of us have become friends.” Sullivan and her husband live in a wooded Shawnee neighborhood marked by rolling terrain— topography that reminds her of San Francisco, where she once lived. “There are still lots of things I miss about the Bay Area, but Shawnee is home and we love it here,” she says. “Wonderful people, a great vibe and endless opportunities. And I certainly wouldn’t have developed a mitten-making business in California.”
27 Shawnee’s Thrifting Bonanza Because Karen Sullivan’s mittens are fashioned from sweaters people give her or ones she finds at thrift stores around the metro, she is extra careful to use as much of the garment as possible. “Very little waste—that’s why, in addition to mittens, I make items like pin cushions and even little heart-shaped sachets and hand warmers,” she says. When it came to combing through piles of sweaters for her eco-friendly mittens, Sullivan was pleasantly surprised to find a wealth of thrift stores in Shawnee. “I could spend a whole day shopping at all the stores around here, including Goodwill Industries, Savers, City Thrift, Shawnee Community Services and Hillcrest Thrift,” she says. “There’s certainly not a lack of quality sweaters waiting to find new life.”

Ghosts Shawnee The
of

When Ghost Tours of Kansas was looking to expand to a new city in 2009, Shawnee was a logical choice. The company already had two tour guides living in the city, and business was booming. Ghost and paranormal shows were popular on television, and longtime customers of the company were eager for tours in new cities. Cathy Ramirez, owner of Ghost Tours of Kansas, explains how the Shawnee tour was put together. “We always start by doing our historical research about the happenings in the area,” she says. “Oftentimes, tragic events in the past can lead to the hauntings that are experienced today.” Shawnee’s pioneer history includes a visit by William Quantrill and his bushwhackers in October 1862. Riding into town on horseback, the raiders corralled citizens into the center of town—an area that is present-day city hall. Two Shawnee residents were killed during Quantrill’s raid on Shawnee. Many historians believe that Quantrill used that raid as practice for his bloody sacking of Lawrence in August 1863, which led to the deaths of nearly 200 men and boys. That traumatic event could have left an impression on downtown Shawnee that resulted in a cluster of hauntings. In addition to the historical research that goes on to prepare a tour, Ramirez says that one thing that sets her tours apart from other local ghost tours is that tour guests actually get out of the bus and explore some of the locations on their own. In Shawnee, stops include two cemeteries and a walking tour through downtown Shawnee’s hotbed of paranormal activity.

While there are no personal homes on the tour, Ramirez and her team compiled stories by talking to local business owners and collecting first-hand accounts. The team walked doorto-door asking those owners and store employees if they had seen anything unusual or if anything inexplicable had happened. The stories quickly began to pour in. “Anyone can look up ghost stories on the internet, but we talk to people who have had experiences with paranormal activities in their businesses,” Ramirez says. “We also have a group of paranormal investigators who go into various locations at the invitation of the owners to see if they can get additional information about the haunting. Those things definitely add another perspective
to the stories that are told on our tours. We use businesses that are haunted so our tour guests can actually go back to those stores and patronize the businesses and find out more about the hauntings. Ghosts are actually good for business.” During one of the paranormal investigations for the Shawnee tour, the investigators not only gathered some impressive evidence but also validated a name and captured a voice on a digital recorder. The voice was confirmed to be that of the current business owner’s grandfather, who was acknowledging the fact that he liked another relative still working in the business. Mike Unterreiner, owner of downtown Shawnee’s Hartman Hardware, has plenty
of unexplained happenings in his store. Unterreiner says that several of his customers have seen a woman in white in one of the aisles, and other people have heard footsteps coming down the stairs when nobody is in the upstairs storage area. “One night I was working in the back and heard voices coming from the computer speakers,” he says. “It was a woman’s voice talking about picking up the kids. It turns out that the speakers weren’t plugged in, and they were turned off. It made the hair on my arm stand on end.” Each tour is different due to the interaction with the crowd. Many times, tour guests are excited to tell their personal ghost stories or ask questions of the tour guides.

New encounters are constantly being added as those stories are passed along to Ramirez or the Shawnee tour guides. “It’s very common for wives or girlfriends to drag their husbands or boyfriends to a tour,” Ramirez says. “The guys aren’t always willing participants, but they go to appease their wives or girlfriends. By the end of the tour, the guys are the ones asking all the questions and finding out what other cities Ghost Tours of Kansas offers tours in so they can go to those tours, too.” There have even been some unexplained happenings that have occurred during tours. On the inaugural Shawnee tour in 2009, a group of girls was sitting in the back of the bus taking pictures of their group on a cell phone. One of the pictures had white lights over the girls’ faces, much like what the trail of a sparkler would leave. The photo could not be explained, and nobody saw any strange lights as the photos were being taken. Another time, a tour guest took a picture through a window of a business. She captured what appeared to be a green-lit translucent hand reaching towards the camera. Again, the photo could not be explained.

The Shawnee Economic Development Council (SEDC) is a division of the Shawnee Chamber Corporation and works collaboratively with the City of Shawnee to promote job creation, business expansion and real estate development in Shawnee. Visit SHAWNEE Visit Shawnee works to increase the number of visitors and events and to create a positive impact in the tourism segment of the local economy. It provides information on park and recreation facilities; details on fun activities for the whole family; and a hospitality tent at all major events and celebrations. To best serve the tourism industry, Visit Shawnee works closely with local hotels. This includes the Courtyard by Marriott, the Hampton Inn and the Holiday Inn Express & Suites. The Comfort Inn & Suites and Fairfield Inn & Suites will open soon, and will expand local accommodations for visitors. In 2016, Visit Shawnee fulfilled 315 requests for relocation or visitors information, and provided information and promotions for more than 5,400 visitor requests on accommodations, dining and entertainment. Ambassadors Ambassadors are a passionate group of volunteers who welcome new members and guests during ribbon cuttings, Business After Hours, networking, coffees and other events. Google Business Workshops Free workshops help chamber members learn more about growing their business online, enhancing their online presence and more. Governmental Affairs Persons interested in legislative issues might serve on the Governmental Affairs Committee. This group
helps develop the annual state legislative platform and meets with elected officials during the session. MembersPlus Mobile App Provides members with easy access to the information they need from their mobile devices. Members are able to register, pay and check-in for events and other chamber activities. Small Business Saturday Member businesses help the chamber promote this event to other small businesses and the community. Johnson County, which includes the city of Shawnee, is forecast from 2010 to 2040 to have the largest growth of population, households and employment anywhere in the KC metro area. By 2040, Johnson County will surpass Jackson County as the county in the region with the highest population and employment. • The population is expected to increase by 231,298 for the 30-year forecast, 32.1 percent of the region’s total population. Johnson County will account for 44.2 percent of the region’s growth. • About 40 percent of the job growth in the metro is projected to occur in Johnson County. By 2040 the county will be home to 449,431 jobs —35.3 percent of the region’s total. Future
The City of Shawnee continues to experience strong growth, and both businesses and residents enjoy a quality of life that make the area a desirable place to live and work. Successful public-private partnerships are making a difference to businesses and individuals across Shawnee. Shawnee has experienced more than a quarter of a billion dollars in economic development during the past six years, and in 2016 added: • 215 new jobs • $10 million in new annual payroll • $30 million in new capital investments Industrial development has seen the WestLink Business Center open and lease a majority of the second spec building. Construction for building number three is expected to be completed in 2017. Online retail giant Amazon is leasing nearly 80,000 sq. ft. in the WestLink Business Center on 43rd Street near K-7 Highway. Approximately 150 jobs have been created and 20,000 sq. ft. of space is left in this building. A three-story building on the northwest corner of Goddard and Shawnee Mission Parkway is the anchor of the $15.5 million Stag’s Creek mixed-use project. The 35,000 sq. ft office building features an innovative design of steel and glass. A Raising Cane’s restaurant and Andy’s Frozen Custard shop are also included in the development. Centra Care Shawnee Mission Urgent Care offers nonemergency medical care seven days per week and is located at 11245 Shawnee Mission Parkway. The convenient location provides a board-certified physician on staff, while x-rays, prescriptions and labs are also available on-site.
