hat do carnations, pickles, and caramel apples all have in common? Stop into Servaes Brewing Co., located just off Johnson Drive in Shawnee, and you will quickly find out. Owner and head brewer Courtney Servaes looks to put a creative spin on the traditional beverage. “Like Butterflies” and “Milkshake Secrets” are just a few of the artful beers visitors will find flowing from the taps at the brewery. “I get bored easily, so the idea is that we will always do something different and unusual,” says Servaes. The brewery boasts a menu of eight beers and two sodas on tap at any one time. However, eight beers is a far cry from the brewery’s full repertoire. “I had a goal to brew 100 unique beers before the end of 2019, and I’m at 113 now, even before the end of the year,” Servaes says. And beer isn’t all she’s brewing. Servaes also brews her own line of sodas, lovingly named “Aaron Sodas” after the line’s inspiration, her son, Aaron, 13, the older of her two sons. Her younger son is Dylan, 2. “(Aaron) made a list of all of the sodas he thought would be fun to make, and we’ve just been working through them,” she says. Flavors such as fruit punch, cotton candy, and root beer are among the 20-plus sodas featured in the Aaron line. There are even a few sodas honoring literary and cinematic classics. “The butterscotch cream soda is based off of Harry Potter’s Butter Beer, and we made one called Hakuna Matata when The Lion King came out,” Servaes says. “Sometimes we have to rein him in because he can go a little bit crazy with his ideas.” It seems innovative ideas run in the family. Servaes is among the few women in the brewing industry; less than 1 percent of all brewers are women. She began by attending home brew meetings with her friend-turned-mentor, Angelo Ruiz. Ruiz showed Servaes the ropes of brewing with her fledgling backyard attempts and has supported her throughout her journey. “He is the head of a brewery in Lawrence. He’s a good friend. He helped me set up, and we probably text three or four times a week,” says Servaes of her connection with Ruiz. Though Servaes has been brewing for nearly five years, her venture into commercial brewing is still new. Servaes Brewing Co. opened in April 2019 and is quickly becoming a local favorite. “We definitely have regulars,” Servaes says. “But it’s shocking how many people will stumble in here having no idea that we’re even here.” It’s a fortunate bystander who “stumbles in,” as Servaes puts it. The place has a bright, clean feel, with splashes of turquoise and yellow accenting the floor-to-ceiling windows lining the front of business. It is the antithesis of the dark and musty environments sometimes

associated with drinking establishments. Servaes had a vision, and the atmosphere and furnishings were done by design. “The idea here is that we would have board games and do soda and ice cream. More family friendly and less of a ‘bar’ feeling,” she says. The brewery’s sweet spot for business is right after lunch on weekends, with another influx of customers after the dinner hour. The brewery closes at 10 p.m., holding true to Servae’s “family-friendly” concept. “My grandma always told me that nothing good ever happens after midnight, and I genuinely believe that,” Servaes says with a laugh. Many of the brewery’s most successful events have occurred in the middle of the day. For instance, the brewery hosted a pickle party on a September Saturday afternoon. “I went and bought a whole bunch of cucumbers from Old Shawnee Town, and we made four beers that all had cucumbers in them,” Servaes says. “One was a Bloody Mary–inspired beer. One was sour with cucumbers and watermelons. One was an IPA with pureed cucumber, and one was an ale with cucumber and mint.” Whenever possible, Servaes tries to keep it local. Aside from local produce, she also has a partnership with Old Shawnee Pizza (turn to page 22) and Aunt Jean’s Ice Cream. Both establishments offer their products through the brewery. Servaes uses gelato from Aunt Jean’s to make floats, both alcoholic and nonalcoholic. Though the brewery doesn’t currently offer food prepared on-site, patrons can custom-

order Old Shawnee Pizza to enjoy with their beverages. “I always look local first. I might go to Mission, Overland Park, I try to keep it in Johnson County. The idea is to promote other businesses in the area.” She does admit it was tough to track down a local source of a certain variety of edible blossom when creating her latest brew. “I’m getting ready to brew a beer with red carnations. I was in a sorority in college and our flower was a red carnation,” Servaes says. “I was watching a cooking show and they were using red carnations in salads, and I thought, ‘I wonder what those taste like?’” Inspiration is everywhere for Servaes: from her family, to her sorority, and even her other hobbies. Aside from beer, Servaes also has a passion for food. “I love to cook. If I’m tasting a dessert I like, I think, ‘Oh, this might make a really

good beer.’” Chocolate chips, pumpkin pie, and red velvet cake have all been sweet influences, helping Servaes blend her love of cooking with her love of brewing. Carnations and cake are certainly fun components for an innovative beverage, but what about just a regular beer? “Being in downtown Shawnee, we try to always have some sort of ‘easy drinker’ on tap,” Servaes says. “You know, something that isn’t overly aggressive in any sort of flavor profile. Something similar to those readily available domestic beers you often find in cans.” Whether inspired by sorbet or butterflies or just a regular can of domestic beer, Servaes keeps busy looking for the next inventive idea. “Once you start going down that rabbit hole, it is difficult to come back,” she says with a smile.

“we’re trying to preserve

the history the best we can while building single-family homesites.”

—John Alpert, president of The Alpert Companies

A

3-foot-high stone wall parallels the south side of 71st Street between Pflumm Road to the west and Quivira to the east. It stands as a vestige of another time and place, as though it might have snaked through a meadow in the 15th-century Scottish highlands. It sits as a sentry in front of a modest stone structure that was once the home of one of the world’s foremost makers of custom golf clubs. Nothing else about the surrounding grounds resembles the property as it was when the Kenneth Smith Golf manufacturing facility constructed custom golf clubs for the rich, famous, and powerful the world over. Today, dirt is graded over much of the 60-acre property. Curbing is being installed, outlining a new threesection neighborhood—appropriately dubbed Kenneth Estates—that will feature 92 singlefamily homes. It’s the inevitable change and progress that occurs everywhere, all the time. But, in this instance, the glitz and glitter of the future do not mean the past will be ignored. At least, that’s the intent. “The developers are definitely taking into consideration the historic nature of the property and remaining structure,” says Kerwin Holloway, associate broker with ReeceNichols Real Estate. “It’s a gorgeous piece of land and one that they want to maintain some of the history of Kenneth Smith and his company. They intend on keeping and refurbishing the stone wall. The original house will be remodeled, refurbished, and sold as a residence. And, in one of the model homes … on the west side, there are plans to have an old set of Kenneth Smith golf clubs displayed in the entryway.” Those golf clubs were once custom made for luminaries such as President Dwight Eisenhower,

Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Sammy Davis Jr., and baseball legend Mickey Mantle. The Alpert Companies, based in Leawood, is developing the 60-acre plat, which features beautiful rolling terrain, two ponds, and extensive foliage backing up to a creek on the south side, providing the opportunity for residences in a variety of types, sizes, and styles. Other than the original family home, purchased by Smith and his wife, Eva, in 1933, and the stone wall, little remains of Kenneth Smith Golf, which began construction of its manufacturing facilities on the property in 1935 and operated there until closing in 2003 (Smith died in 1977). The facilities, built upon Smith’s request with the same kind of stone that went into the late-1800s home, are long gone, as are the nine-hole golf course and clubhouse Smith built for his employees in the early 1960s. The developer agrees with Holloway that the memories and history of what made the area famous should be preserved as much as possible. “We’re very excited about the project,” says Jeff Alpert, president of The Alpert Companies. “Having been a golfer myself, I was familiar with Kenneth Smith and what he did. It’s a very interesting story. It’s a significant story for Shawnee. Then, there’s the property itself. It’s in a great location. The topography is beautiful. There’s lots of privacy and natural beauty. “We’re trying to preserve the history the best we can while building single-family homesites. We (wanted to preserve) the house, plus maintaining the beautiful wall … In fact, we intend on extending the wall east and west, matching the look as best we can.” Alpert says his company also commissioned two paintings of the property before work started on the site as a testament to the history of the place.

The property of the former Kenneth Smith Golf facility is the site of a new housing development.

16

SHAWNEE MAGAZINE sunflowerpub.com

A Journey

The road to developing the property was a long one. Soon after Kenneth Smith Golf closed, a group of residents adjacent to the property spoke out about how the site should be preserved as a historical site and, in 2004, filed suit against the city, claiming the City Council had not followed proper procedure when it approved the property’s rezoning for development. Rodrock Development was just one of the companies seeking to re-develop the property. “It was looked at for developing three times, but there were a number of obstacles,” says Holloway. “There was the historic nature of the house. And, the site needed to be environmentally cleaned up, because of the manufacturing of clubs. It was considered a risky property because of the unknown. Nobody knew what the extent (of the clean-up) would be.” In the end, Alpert decided the reward of developing such a property was worth the risk. “Everything pointed to the fact that the environmental issues were not insurmountable,” he says. “We’ve been working very closely with the (Kansas Department of Health and Environment) to take all the proper steps.” When the project is completed over the next two to three years, what once was a lush but somewhat rugged-looking home to a famous golf club manufacturer will be transformed into a pristine new neighborhood. Residences will be divided into three sections, each slightly different in character and size. The pod of homes to the east will have the smallest residences of 2,000 to 3,000 square feet. The west pod will have homes ranging from 2,500 to 3,500 square feet, and the center pod, which will include more customizable homes, will have residences of more than 3,000 square feet. Lots, which range from 60 by 65 feet to 70 by 80 feet and wider, will be priced from $100,000 to the $200,000s. Holloway says 10 percent of the lots already have been reserved. “Approximately 75 percent are walkout lots with great views of either the woods or ponds,” he says. “They’re rebuilding the dams tall enough to have a walking path, which will connect sections of the property.” Alpert adds, “We’re lifelong residents of Kansas City. Our mission is to find great pieces of land and develop the best uses for that land. If you start out with a great site, it’s hard to go wrong. And we have a great site here.”

Sister Cities Exchange program creates community connections. story by Jill Dutton | photography by Sarah Reeves

magine what it’s like for an American firefighter to ride in a firetruck on the German Autobahn. Or a businessman to see how commerce is conducted in Belgium. Or a Shawnee resident to form connections with new friends in Ireland. It’s an opportunity for two cities, in different parts of the globe, to learn from each other and see that, despite their cultural difference, they’re very much alike. The world gets a little smaller when these authentic connections are made. Two cities sign an agreement to become sister cities, and the relationship is formed. Such a relationship may be formed between cities, counties, or states, with the goal of learning about other cultures and creating closer ties, both cultural and economic. Organizations on both sides pursue activities important to both—including municipal, business, trade, educational, and cultural exchanges and projects between the two communities. In addition to Shawnee’s Sister City Committee, local businesses and community leaders are involved in the affiliation. Until 1946, no national focus existed on affiliations between U.S. cities and other countries. That year, President Dwight D. Eisenhower initiated the People to People Program at the White House. According to Sister Cities International’s 2019 Annual Report, more than 500 U.S. member communities now enjoy more than 1,800 partnerships in 138 countries on six continents.

SHAWNEE MAGAZINE sunflowerpub.com

Shawnee’s Sister Cities Shawnee has relationships with the cities of Pittem, Belgium; Listowel, Ireland; and Erfurt, Germany. The partnerships started in 1983 when the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce and the Shawnee Historical Society sought support from the city to initiate the Sister City Program. The goal was to increase international understanding by encouraging relationships between communities in different parts of the world. Shawnee established connections with Pittem in 1984, Listowel in 1985, and Erfurt in 1993. These relationships are strengthened through ongoing exchanges of people, ideas, and cultural events. One way the cities and their peoples connect is through arts and culture programs. Through experiential immersion into the arts and culture of an international community, residents of both communities gain insight into the history, values, and aesthetic sensibilities of the partnering city. Every year, delegates from a city travel to the sister city, alternating years, visiting the U.S. one year and the foreign city the next. During exchanges, participants may visit musical performances, art exhibits, parks and gardens, and popular festivals in each city. Dennis Busby, a Shawnee Sister City Committee member, says, “We’ve had them come visit during Old Shawnee Days, and we’ve traveled to (Erfurt) for Oktoberfest.”

In addition to the visits every other year, the cities honor each other with displays and parks. The City of Shawnee has three parks named in honor of the Sister Cities—West Flanders Park, Listowel Park, and Erfurt Park. A fourth park, the Sister Cities Park, contains the only public Rolle Bolle court in the state of Kansas. Rolle Bolle, a cross between horseshoes and bowling, was brought to America by Belgian immigrants. The Shawnee Sister City Committee has shared with the sister cities paintings and limited edition prints of Shawnee created by artist Charles Goslin, along with statues and artwork depicting Shawnee and early American works. They’ve also shared commemorative pieces including commemorative plates that the sister cities displayed. Funding for Sister City activities comes from a variety of sources—some from city governments, with the majority of funding from private sources. In the past, delegates have paid out of pocket for their individual airfare, meals, and accommodations. More recently, host families have been secured for lodging, and the fire department last year formalized its committee and obtained 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in order to raise funds to help with travel expenses.

Fire Departments Share The Shawnee Fire Department is a separate active branch of the sister city project. Shawnee Fire Chief John Mattox says it’s important to learn more about firefighting in another country. “We spend time in their station and run calls with them—as they do when they come here. There’s definitely a difference between the fire service in Europe than in the United States. The first thing we tend to notice is that the … fire trucks are much, much smaller,” Mattox says. “They come over here and, you know the United States, we’ve built these giant fire trucks and there’s a huge difference in size. Their trucks are a little more specialized. For instance, their engine may only carry things to go to a fire … We’re set up to go to a fire or go to a wreck, go to a hazmat call—we put everything on the engine and they have more specialized apparatus. “The first time I went to Erfurt several years ago, the day we spent at the station I was riding with the battalion chief and at 8:30 in the morning we ran a truck fire on the Autobahn. So just to be on the Autobahn and out there with the firefighters—there’s nothing like it. You can’t experience that here.” And when the firefighters visit Shawnee, in addition to Old Shawnee Days, Mattox says, “Of course we feed them barbecue three or four times, but we’ve also taken them to see the Plaza, the World War II Museum, the Topeka Capitol. We usually put the visiting firefighters on a firetruck in the (Old Shawnee Days) parade.” In addition to the Shawnee Fire Department, other organizations who interact with the sister cities are the German American Club, Irish American Club, and other Shawnee clubs that participate in many community events.“They are supportive of us and we of them,” Busby says.

West Flanders Park contains information on sister city Pittem, Belgium.

Creating Connections Mickey Sandifer, council member for Ward 4, has visited all three sister cities. He says he enjoys the opportunity to see the differences in cultures, and he says one of the main benefits of the program is to generate trade between two cities and learn about local commerce. In Belgium, Sandifer learned more about how linen is created from flax fibers. The group toured flax fields and were sent home with towels as a memento of the tour. Sandifer says, “My history of knowing other countries … is generated from reading about it in papers, books, news. Yet, having firsthand experience allows me to find out that much of the world is very much the same as we are. Our beliefs are the same, our actions the same. Our culture may be different, but the importance of our financial situation—what you sell or manufacture to make your living—is very much the same: people are people.” Sister City Committee chairman Dennis Busby says of the importance of Sister City projects, “It’s essentially a connection with people, culture, and a sharing of ideas. The ideas we share and how the other city can do something with a completely different process to accomplish the same thing and some of their processes are much better than ours. “We are fortunate because the people who set this up years ago planted the seeds and we are the ones reaping the benefit of all these connections.”

Old Shawnee Pizza celebrates 50 years of business. story by Kari Williams | photography by Kevin Anderson

After 50 years in business, two tenets have kept a local pizza joint baking pies and dishing out culinary specialties— quality and consistency. That’s according to Will Walker, second-generation owner of Old Shawnee Pizza, a locally owned business that has grown to three locations and crosses state lines. “Dad always told me quality and consistency will always be the best formula for business,” Walker says. “If you consistently put out a quality product, then you’ll be fine.” Will’s father, Joe, was “bouncing from job to job” when his brother-in-law, who had a Pizza Shoppe franchise, asked if Joe wanted to grab a slice of the pizza business. “He really didn’t have any kind of financial backing or any money,” Will Walker says. “He started with nothing, hoping to make something out of it.” Since 1969, Joe Walker’s business venture has split from the Pizza Shoppe franchise and grown from one shop to three, crossing state lines earlier this year. Locations now exist in Lenexa, Shawnee, and North Kansas City, Missouri.

“ANYTHING CAN GO ON A PIZZA, IF YOU GET THE FLAVORS RIGHT.”

25

THE BEGINNING The original Old Shawnee Pizza, then a Pizza Shoppe, opened in 1969 at the old McAnany house on Nieman Road. It remained there until moving across the street around 1985. “[It was] too small of a space for the business that we were doing,” Walker says. “So [my father] needed to expand. Business was obviously good, and the opportunity came about to move catty-corner from where that was.” Will Walker first got involved with the restaurant in the late 1980s, washing dishes and making salads. To keep the family business alive, he took the reins around 2005, and his sister, Lisa, helps manage the Shawnee location. “My dad worked so hard for so many years to build something up,” Walker says. “I didn’t want to see something disappear because nobody wanted to run it. I enjoyed it, too.” He wanted to build on what his father had created and “expand even further.” Old Shawnee Pizza gained its name in 2003 when Joe Walker parted ways from his brother-in-law. The name came about, according to Will, because they wanted to keep “local ties involved,” as well as draw a connection to the city’s historic Old Shawnee Town.

QUALITY AND FLAVORS The menu at Old Shawnee Pizza (the Shawnee location is at 6000 Roger Drive) spans from traditional toppings to others, such as crab rangoon pizza, that have generated some viral interest. A video about the crab rangoon pizza was featured on Telehue Food’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/telehue/ videos/473155523101984) last December and has since been viewed more than 13 million times and shared almost 165,000 times. OSP also created a hot chicken pizza—an idea that emerged on a family vacation when the Walkers passed through Nashville. They stopped to try the local specialty, a dish that features fried chicken in a cayenne pepper sauce and served atop a slice of bread, accompanied by pickles. “I said, ‘I could probably chop this up and put it on a pizza,’” Walker says. In addition to the combinations they concoct, the business also uses “quality product,” according to Walker. “We definitely use more of a higher priced item and a better quality item,” Walker says, “whether it be meats or vegetables. Everything (comes) in fresh. So (it’s) always fresh produce, fresh vegetables, quality products.” In creating the nontraditional menu items, Walker says he actively thinks of different combinations, such as “tacos al pastor”—a concoction of al pastor meat (shaved pork marinated with chilis), pineapples, onions, and a salsa verde (a green sauce). “Anything can go on a pizza, if you get the flavors right,” he says. Other specialties on the menu include “Mac” Daddy, Luau, and Meatlocker.

From top: Nick Mongkhonvilay prepares a line of pizzas; the main dining room welcomes visitors; server Kassidy Nelson delivers a pizza.

Displayed on a wall between dining areas are accolades for the pizza and the business.

EXPANDING The business first expanded in 2012 when it opened the Lenexa location on West 101st Street. When the opportunity arose, Walker says, he thought OSP would “do well” in the city that sits roughly seven miles south of Shawnee. “I’ve always been one to not just settle and say, just kind of plateau,” Walker says. “I always like to expand.” Then in February, OSP partnered with Repeal 18th, a gastropub in North Kansas City, Missouri, as just one more way for Walker to get more eyes on his style of pizza. “I think getting closer to downtown expands my brand awareness and starts getting to people that have never heard of Old Shawnee Pizza and letting them experience what our food’s about,” Walker says. In expanding, he says, one of the challenges he has faced is not being able to oversee everything at each location. That’s where it is imperative to hire people he can trust to open the restaurants and ensure they run smoothly. He said he typically visits each location a couple times a week. Through all the changes, Walker says his fondest memories with Old Shawnee Pizza are simply getting to know the customers and employees. “You’re around them and interact with them more times than you do your family at home,” Walker says. “Sometimes you get to know people and their lives … customers and the employees become family.” Shawnee, he says, has been vital to the pizza shop’s growth, and the restaurant welcomes many repeat customers. There is one man, Walker says, who visits daily, while others stop in weekly. Regulars make up about 90 percent of the business, he says. “If it wasn’t for the people of Shawnee, I wouldn’t be able to expand,” Walker says. “Obviously, they’ve kept us in business so long.” Being around for five decades, Will Walker says, harks back to his father’s advice. “[The people of Shawnee are the ones] keeping that register ringing; that’s definitely the people that have kept us here and going,” Walker says, “and it goes back to the quality and consistency.”

“IF IT WASN’T FOR THE PEOPLE OF SHAWNEE, I WOULDN’T BE ABLE TO EXPAND…”

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE Old Shawnee Pizza owner Will Walker says the pepperoni, onion, pineapple, and jalapeño combination is his favorite.

“I just like the sweet and the spicy and the onion,” he says. Share your favorites by emailing the editor at editor@ shawneemagazine.com or commenting on our Facebook page (@ShawneeMagazine).

PBI/Gordon moves its headquarters and finds a sense of community in Shawnee.

30

P

BI/Gordon Corp. moved its headquarters last year to Shawnee, and the staff has enjoyed being in a community that offers grocery shopping, dry cleaners, an auto supply store, car dealerships, and restaurants within walking distance. The business, an employee-owned manufacturer that sells professional turf products and farm, home, and animal health products, had been operating in the West Bottoms on 12th Street in Kansas City, Missouri. The old headquarters sat next to railroad tracks, and when trains rolled by, the building would shake and echo with the screech of train whistles. “Because the tracks were open to traffic, there were many of our conference calls or meetings that we would have to stop because the horns were so loud,” Donald Chew, president and CEO of PBI/ Gordon, says with a laugh. Bob Grant joined the company in September 2017 as senior director of special projects and joined the search for a new office building. “He quickly jumped in and helped us search. Leading up to the purchase of the building on West 68th Terrace in Shawnee, we had to evaluate the building and what we would have to do to it. We knew it would be an online auction, and we did a lot of homework around that. We knew if we could get the building at the price we wanted to pay, it would be a blessing,” Chew says. Grant says, “We worked with the city of Shawnee and the state of Kansas and are very appreciative what the city of Shawnee has

done, what the state of Kansas has done to support our move through incentives.” Both Chew and Grant credit the city’s friendliness and neighborly spirit as an incentive to moving the company over the state line. “People wanted to help and were ecstatic that we were looking to move here. The building had been empty for about five years. Our purchase of the building and bringing in 100 plus people here is a nice boon to the economy,” Grant says. Chew says the city has being very supportive, and Grant quickly adds that the culture in the area is family oriented. Grant and other employees enjoy gathering after work at nearby businesses for a quick bite to eat. The company also has food catered from nearby eateries for business meetings. “We have formal events happening here or we take customers to the nearby businesses for lunch. We use the hotels on Midland Drive for our out-of-town visitors, and we enjoy supporting the Shawnee businesses around us. It is nice to have it here in our neighborhood. We can literally walk to many of the places here,” says Grant. After being in their Shawnee office for over a year now, Chew says, “It is very gratifying seeing how the company and individuals have grown. We are very grateful to be here in the city of Shawnee and the state of Kansas. It is a great neighborhood, and we are looking forward to being part of this community.”

“We are very grateful to be here in the city of Shawnee and the state of Kansas.” Making the move

-Donald Chew, president and CEO

Company Changes When the company first began in 1947 in the Kansas City area, it was called Private Brands Inc. (PBI), and they offered manufacturing for other companies. At that time, the business focused primarily on agricultural products. Over the years, as the company expanded and grew, the focus changed to producing its own branded products instead of creating products for other private labels or contract work for other labels. According to Chew, the company name was changed from Private Brands Inc. to PBI/Gordon Corp., and they began working on their own brand of products. “Our products are primarily lawn and garden and professional turf products. Our products are found in lawn care companies, farm stores such as Tractor Supply and Orscheln Farm and Home and other tractor supply accounts. We sell commercial products that are used by the big lawn and garden companies such as Scotts. We are in the big box stores, for example Home Depot and Lowe’s. That is our primary business,” says Chew. In 2000, the company purchased Pegasus Laboratories, which manufactures animal health pharmaceutical and nutritional products sold primarily in U.S. markets and veterinary clinics. In 2013, the company went into the pet care business by purchasing Pet Ag, based in Chicago. They now produce and sell primarily milk replacer products for orphaned animals and a variety of other nutritional animal products and grooming products. The company also has a pest management group that is market-focused, with solutions for professional and residential lawn, animal, and property care.

Employees working in the new headquarters have begun to look for homes nearby. “As people have gotten out here to work and seen the area, we have had employees move and some have said in another year or after their kids are out of school they are planning to move here in Shawnee to be closer to work,” says Chew.“We have been in an office that had no windows. The amount of daylight and the access to the outdoors and the amenities around here have been a welcome surprise.” Those amenities include a work-out center among others. In 1994, the company became 54 percent employee owned, and, by 2002, they were 100 percent employee owned. “We hope to remain employee owned for many years to come. It has been really good for PBI,” Chew says. “The employee ownership can have a very meaningful impact on people’s lives. People retire here and they know they have more than a 401K; it is very gratifying.” No one at the company puts in any money out of pocket. The company funds the account. “Today as people retire, the stock has built up in their account; it doesn’t cost them anything other than their sweat equity. You come to work, and knowing, if the company performs well, that will transfer back to the owners of the company. Each year the stock is valued, and each employee can see what the stock is worth and hopefully the stock grows year after year,” says Chew. As people retire from the company, they roll their stock funds into an IRA or take it as income and pay their taxes. “It has been a great mechanism to provide additional income above and beyond your retirement fund. It is a great way to be a part of something that is worth more than just receiving a paycheck,” he said.

A Corporate Vision Today when you walk into the offices of PBI/Gordon, a living wall greets visitors. It’s a reminder of the company’s core values: integrity, innovation, partnership, and pride. “That wall represents green spaces, and that is what we are about. Inspired innovations, green spaces, pets, and people are our vision,” Chew says.
