dear reader, Many of us will be staying close to home for the holidays as we continue to help our community mitigate the spread of Covid-19. Lucky for us, Shawnee has a wide range of businesses where we can find the perfect gift to send to Mom and Dad or a great place to order a special dinner – for any occasion. Check out the features in this issue of Shawnee Magazine: Hayward’s Pit BBQ moved to Shawnee last year (page 22); the Caenen Castle has new owners who’ve opened the Wandering Vine, an urban winery and dining experience (page 26); and local artisans peddle their wares at the I Heart Local shop in town (page 30). Hartman Hardware Store has closed, but the building will see new occupants in the new year (page 18). And just for fun, read about a local couple who run for fun and to chase new records (page 14). The Shawnee Chamber of Commerce reaches a milestone in 2021, celebrating 75 years of helping local businesses and the community. hen the Chamber of Commerce was formed in 1946, Shawnee residents numbered about 800; the Chamber comprised 46 members. Nearly 75 years later, the population has grown to more than 66,000 with about 650 Chamber member businesses and 1,400 member representatives. Shawnee businesses look to the Chamber for opportunities for networking, education, business growth, and connections with the local community.

6000 Roger Dr. 19617 W. 101st The Chamber’s Purpose Shawnee, KS 66203 Lenexa, KS 66220 A chamber of commerce is a local association created and designed 913-631-5716 913-254-1234 to promote and protect the interests of the business community. The Shawnee Chamber extends that focus through a variety of partnerships designed to facilitate community advocacy. “Chambers—and they do serve different roles in different communities—but primarily, we are the advocate for the businesses in our community. ... We are and continue to be the connector and convener and advocator for our business community and for the community as a whole. So, we are able to provide the service of being a community champion, a business champion that government and other offices [are unable to] really fulfill,” says Chamber president Ann Smith-Tate. The Chamber’s government affairs program advocates for and communicates the community’s and business leaders’ needs to elected officials. By hosting panel-style events, the Chamber offers the opportunity for members to ask questions and review a variety of issues with those officials. Smith-Tate and Visit Shawnee executive director Kevin Fern have both participated in committees and working groups for the City of Shawnee government’s strategic plan. The Shawnee Chamber of Commerce fulfills these roles through a mix of products, services, and events. A large part of the programming • All Care Day Child Care Preschool Preschool • All Day Child focuses on educational programs, business openings, annual dinners, Certified•Teachers • 12 to Kindergarten Certified Teachers 12 months to months Kindergarten and awards ceremonies, among other events. is another example, as those morning coffee events rotate locations around Shawnee allowing for our member businesses to connect with each other and our community.” The Young Professional programs are open to anyone in the Shawnee area who is between 20 and 40 years of age. The Chamber hosts educational and networking events for this demographic, similar to what the organization does for its membership. The Chamber often surveys members about the events as way of checking how the Chamber is performing. Wolfe says, “In those surveys, we have received countless responses letting us know that the Shawnee Chamber is one of, if not the most, welcoming and friendly chambers in Johnson County.” He says that is likely why the Chamber has a larger membership base compared to other cities of the same size. Housed in one location, the Shawnee Chamber Corp. includes three divisions: the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce, Shawnee Economic Development, and Visit Shawnee. “One thing you don’t find in every chamber, is that we also have our economic development and tourism divisions as part of the Chamber. That allows us to serve as one organization that’s fully cohesive in promoting business, tourism, and economic growth for our community, and connecting businesses with

the divisions that can help serve their purposes,” Wolfe says. Wolfe says there are opportunities at several levels for member involvement. “We promote new businesses, we help established businesses, offer free networking opportunities, plus coffees, luncheons, and large galas. Then there are fully educational programs like our Shawnee Tomorrow Leadership Program that has graduated 350 students through the program who have gone on to become elected officials and leaders in the community,” Wolfe says. Wolfe says joining the Chamber is a good way to invest in the community. Members can also get a lot in return from the variety of offerings that the Chamber has as an organization. All of this is part of the Chamber’s community commitment to make Shawnee succeed. “Our organization is unique in that … (it) is the only one that exists to really propel Shawnee forward—to make Shawnee a friendly community to do business in, to be welcoming to visitors and tourists,” Wolfe says. Through the years the Chamber has received accolades for its commitment to community. In 2008, 2013, and 2020, the Chamber received Five-Star Accreditation, one of the highest honors bestowed by the United States Chamber of Commerce.

Celebrating 75 Years To celebrate the 75th anniversary in 2021, the Chamber will hold a Covid-19-safe and friendly outdoor celebration with a 1940s theme of Diamonds Are Forever to complement its 1946 origination. Citizen of the Year will be announced at the event. A website has been created to keep members and the community updated on the celebration (www. shawnee-ks.org/75th anniversary). Moving Forward In addition to educational and business programming for its members, the Shawnee Chamber is committed to community advocacy as well. Smith-Tate says, “We are working with multiple community partners to identify training resources for individuals in the community, working with companies to identify what those needs are, and then going out, working with community colleges, pastoring services, and workforce partnerships. So that is something that we hadn’t done a lot of previously.

What Chamber Members Have to Say

Congratulations on 75 years! We have been members since 2001. The Chamber has been a great avenue for networking with the community and growing the club’s membership.

“We’re looking at how we bridge that gap, connecting our education system with the business community, working to attract those [who] are entering in businesses in and around Shawnee to promote Shawnee as a great place to live, to work. And we’re also, on the flip side, trying to make sure that [the community is] delivering on that promise. That includes working to create things that are uniquely Shawnee—that’s what’s behind the emphasis on the downtown Shawnee area. People are looking for unique restaurants, breweries, coffee shops, whatever that experience is that they want—people more and more are drawn to that local experience—so what is it that is uniquely ours? “And we continue to strive towards identifying, creating, and putting our shoulder behind how we figure out how to promote that local aspect, and make it attractive to the workforce of the next generation,” she says.

For me, the two biggest benefits of being a member of the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce are networking and knowledge. Getting together with other Chamber members for ribbon cuttings and other networking events makes it easy for me to connect with other business owners and residents while expanding my knowledge of the local business climate. I have always considered the members and directors my friends. And they have always been the heart and soul of this community, with a primary objective of making Shawnee a great place to not only own a business, but the best place to live, work, and play. Our company, Calkins Electric Supply, which was established in 1957 by my grandfather, Carl Calkins, has been a member of the Chamber for more than 70 years. And I’m looking forward to joining the Chamber again with a new Shawnee business, the Aztec Theater in downtown Shawnee.

I would say that the benefit of being a Shawnee Chamber member is the unique opportunity that the Chamber brings to the community. I have never seen a Chamber so devoted to growing the businesses within the community and helping businesses and people network through a common platform. Kiene Dental has been a member of the Chamber since I bought the practice in 2017, and [I] will continue to be devoted to actively participating in community events, Chamber meetings, and using the Chamber to find ways to give back to the Shawnee community.

Running for Fun Couple doesn’t let age slow their passion for racing—or their record-breaking times. story by Bob Luder | photography by Katie Lewis

SHAWNEE MAGAZINE sunflowerpub.com

“we’re running at an age where our grandkids ... can see you can still be active. i think that’s a good example to set.” —Karon Way

L

ounging on the back deck of their beautiful western Shawnee home, Don Turner and Karon Way, with their easy smiles, soft voices, and reserved demeanors, come across as a typical retired suburban couple. A closer look reveals there’s more to the story. Don and Karon might not exactly have been born to run, but over the last few years this husband-and-wife duo of 43 years has made themselves into two of the top distance runners in the over-70 age group in both Kansas and Missouri. Judging by state road race records compiled on the Mid-America Running Association (MARA) website, they have staked claims among the greatest road-racing septuagenarians in both states. Both Don and Karon would scoff at such a notion, yet consider that in 2019, Don set the Kansas state record for a road mile—by 10 full seconds—and ran the second-fastest halfmarathon (13.1 miles) by a runner older than 70 in state history. In Missouri, he established two state marks for 10 kilometers (6.2 miles)—one for the 70–74 age group, the other for a 71-yearold—and set state records for five kilometers (3.1 miles) and half marathon. Karon, older than her husband by three years, holds the Kansas state record for the half marathon in the 70–74 age group and has the state standard for 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) for the 65–69 age group. In Missouri, she has 10K records for 71and 72-year-olds, half marathon records for 72 and 73 age groups, and has the second-fastest 10K in the 70–74-year-old group. Ask the couple why they run and what they get out of it, and mowing down state records is only one advantage they bring up.

“It’s something we do together,” Karon says. “Don encourages me to get out and run on cold days, and I encourage him on hot days.” Don, who was named a finalist for Kansas Runner of the Year by MARA in 2019, says, “We’ve met so many nice people through running who’ve become friends. I wouldn’t do as well in training by myself. I find that other people inspire me. People doing it for the love of it, not looking for records or awards, I admire those people.” Humble Beginnings It will probably come as no surprise that Turner and Way began running later in life and mostly by accident. Though they attended the same high school— Turner High in Kansas City, Kan.—Don and Karon say they never knew each other because of the difference in grades. They didn’t meet until friends and relatives introduced them when they were in their 20s. Don spent his entire working life in various positions in the printing business, while Karon taught math, at then-St. Joseph High School in Shawnee and later at Johnson County Community College. “I think I ran a little my freshman year, then that was that,” Don says.“I played some basketball. But, I decided I needed to make money.” Karon had no opportunity to compete in high school. High schools, at least in this area, didn’t offer cross country or track for girls back then. Much of Don’s activity in his younger years came through playing golf on weekends. When the couple decided to build a house in the woods near Lake Quivira in the 1990s, he found he no longer had time for an activity that could take up half a day.

15

16

SHAWNEE MAGAZINE sunflowerpub.com

“I thought, I need to do something,” he says. “At first, I thought I’d just run down the street a bit. I found I went a little farther the next day and the next day. I just did it for stress relief.” He’d read about the famed Boston Marathon and watched it on TV. The more he ran, the more intrigued he became with someday running it himself. First, though, he’d have to meet a qualifying time standard in another sanctioned marathon. After three failed attempts, he finally qualified at the end of 1998 at a marathon in Tucson, Arizona, and, in 1991, ran what would be the first of three Boston Marathons. Meantime, Karon was traveling with her husband to all these marathons to support him and decided it would be more fun to run than watch. After a breast cancer diagnosis and treatment in 2000, she decided to dive into the sport. She qualified on her third attempt, at the 2005 Kansas City Marathon, and ran her first Boston Marathon in 2006. “I was never an athlete,” she says. “But it was something I could do.” Records Start Falling After his third Boston, Don decided his marathoning days were finished and set about taking on shorter distances. He’d never thought much about age-group records, but when he turned 70 early in 2019, he set his sights on the Irish Mile, held on St. Patrick’s Day in Lawrence. “I just went up to do it for fun,” he says. “[Then] I saw the record was [6 minutes, 54 seconds]. I thought I could get 6:53.” Instead, Don completed the race in 6:13, shattering the Kansas state road mile mark by 50 seconds. “That got me interested in records,” he says. The records began coming in droves after that: The Rock the Parkway half marathon, the 5K at Hospital Hill, two 10K records at the Plaza 10K, just to name a few. As for Karon, she beat her husband to the punch in setting state records, setting her first age standard at a half marathon in Wichita in 2017. What’s Next? Like most everything else, the coronavirus pandemic has slowed the record-chasing in 2020, but Turner and Way say they’ve enjoyed the “idea of relaxing a bit.” As their batteries recharge, they’re looking forward to resuming a competitive schedule once certified races once again become commonplace. “At this point in our lives, we mainly just want to stay healthy,” Don says. “But, yeah, if I can see where I can set some more records, that would be worth giving it a try. I look at it as a gift, and I need to take advantage of it and enjoy it.” Karon adds, “We’re running at an age where our grandkids (they have two grandsons and two great-grandchildren) can see you can still be active. I think that’s a good example to set.”

What Others Say “Don and Karon epitomize the best of the best, both on the inside and out. They are humble, genuinely kind, down-to-earth people who understand that they’ve been given a special gift when it comes to running far and fast. They enjoy the essence of running as well as the innocent pursuit of pushing themselves to see what they can do. It’s been an honor and inspiration to see what they’ve been able to accomplish and how long they’ve been able to sustain such a high standard of excellence!”

—Eladio Valdez III

“I’ve known Don and Karon for 10 years, and I’ve always appreciated their love of running that is infectious for myself and other runners. They bring the complete package of an elite athlete to the starting line: more than sufficient training, knowledge of the course, understanding of pacing, and an iron will. At the finish line, this has translated into multiple state records for both of them in their 60s and 70s, which is unparalleled in my running experience. Despite these outstanding accomplishments, they remain as humble and personable as anyone from the Heartland. We are truly fortunate to have them in our running community, and I’m honored to call them my friends.”

A New Business

in 2021

Owners of the former Hartman Hardware Store retire and turn the keys over to a new tenant. story by Debra DeCoster | photography by Kevin Anderson

ike and Lisa (Hartman) Unterreiner, owners of Hartman Hardware on Johnson Drive in Shawnee, took one last look around their store before shutting and locking the door for the last time in late October. After 36 years in the hardware business, they decided to retire. Hartman Hardware has served the community for more than 74 years. In 1946, Lisa’s grandfather, Clarence Hartman Sr., purchased the building from A.L. Pierson, turning the former Masonic lodge and dance hall into a family-run hardware store. Retiring was not an easy decision; they say they will miss the day-to-day operation and the people who supported their business for generations. As they watched the business district change along Johnson Drive, they knew it was time for them to leave and let the building serve a new generation of clientele. Russ Pearson, director of development for Box Real Estate Development, was attracted to the property due to the prominent location and visibility along Johnson Drive and Nieman Road. “The recent beautification and walkability improvements installed by the city and the opportunity to set the stage for exciting unique concepts attracted us to these properties,” Russ says.

SHAWNEE MAGAZINE sunflowerpub.com

A Look Forward According to Russ, “The Hartman building is a key property within downtown Shawnee. We want to set the stage to allow innovative concepts that complement all the nearby redevelopment that is occurring.” Construction for the first phase of the project on the building will began in November 2020. Box Real Estate Development has budgeted “over a million dollars of private investment into these buildings with the goal of enabling the current and future tenants to adequately respond to the needs of the surrounding area,” Russ says. “We will include demo and ‘white-boxing’ the interior (stripping furnishing and finishes to create a clean slate.”) as well as several improvements to the exterior façade,” he says. “There are a number of fun and interesting pieces being preserved such as old signs, pieces from the old boiler, scales, and other seemingly ordinary hardware that could make for unique art pieces by the next user.” Saying Goodbye As the Unterreiners prepared to close their store, they visited with customers who had been coming for years to purchase items for their homes or yards. “As we began to wrap up the store, our customers say they are really happy for us, but they hate to see us go. They are asking us where are they going to

A unique feature of the local store was that many times Mike would fix an outdoor water faucet or lawn mower for his customers while they waited. “If they needed a new washer in the faucet, I would get the old washer out for them and install the new one. Today, not many places will do that. They will suggest getting a new faucet,” he says. His lawn mowing customers appreciated his same-day service as well. “I would sharpen mower blades as they waited, and, if the mower didn’t seem to be running right, I would service the mower as they waited. During mowing season people need their lawn mowers, they can’t always wait a week or more for someone to fix the mower or sharpen a blade to cut the grass,” he says. Lisa’s family originally owned the business, and she recalls coming to the store with her mom when she was a little girl. “When I came with my mom, I could just see over the edge of the shelves. I could see all this stuff, and my mom would say, ‘Look, don’t touch.’ My grandparents had a case here that would rotate the shelves when you push the button. It had fishing lures on it, and I would push the button and watch the fishing lures go around,” she says.

When her father, Clarence “Red” Hartman Jr., ran the business with his brother, John Hartman, she came in as a teenager and helped her father with the inventory. She enjoyed helping her dad with woodworking projects and asked many questions about the hardware business. “I watched my dad do everything. I wanted to help, but I also watched him because I wanted to learn the business as well,” she says. When her dad approached Lisa and Mike about purchasing the business in 1998, it was an opportunity they both were interested in pursuing. Lisa handled the office operations, while Mike ran the store. “I am an office person and that is what I always did,” she says. While she still handled the day-to-day account operations of the business, she also began to learn different aspects of the hardware

business. She learned how to replace screens, answer questions about paint, and assist customers with their plumbing needs when her husband was working with another customer. “I learned a lot being here over the years. I never said I can’t do something. I would always try first. If I am not physically able to do something, then fine, but I am not afraid to try,” Lisa says. One of Mike’s favorite memories is selling Radio Flyer wagons. The wagons lined the sidewalk in front of the store during the spring and, as Christmas approached, the wagons were on display in the window. “People across the metropolitan community would travel to the store to buy a Radio Flyer wagon for their child at Christmas. They didn’t want to order one—they were afraid it wouldn’t come in time—so they knew that we had them here already put together. We also had the big rocking horses that we would put together and sell at the holidays. There were many times that I had to deliver the rocking horses on Christmas Eve,” he says. As they closed the door on their former hardware store, Lisa says, “This store has always been my grandparents’. My memories are of Grandma and Grandpa here at the store and living above the store. As we take a last look and turn to leave, it will be a final goodbye to Grandma and Grandpa.”

FINDING A HOME IN SHAWNEE People flock to the new location of Hayward’s Pit BBQ. stor y by Kari W illiams

|

p h o t o g r a p hy b y K e v i n A n d e r s o n

The restaurant business is in Reilly Sweeney’s blood, but Hayward’s Pit BBQ is more than that—it’s family. And the family business has settled in its new home in Shawnee. When the Johnson County staple relocated to West 75th Street in May 2019, its regulars followed. “For us to be here over a year and staying very consistent, I think that shows volumes,” says Sweeney, Hayward’s general manager. “It proves that with your community, the support of the community, anything can happen. But being an almost 50-year-old brand, we just really had to stay consistent. I always say that we give the best service around and that’s what keeps people coming back, and that’s why we’ve really embraced the city of Shawnee.”

A FAMILY BUSINESS When Reilly Sweeney’s father, Eric, purchased the barbecue business in 2013, it was a full-circle moment. Eric had grown up in a home off 100th Terrace and Antioch Road, which was within walking distance from the original Hayward’s location when he started working there at age 13, taking ash and embers out of the pit and filling it with more wood.

24

After spending much of his life in the food business, Eric knew that one day he would own his own restaurant. It was a couple months after his own father died that he responded to a Craigslist advertisement looking for someone to run a “well-established” barbecue restaurant. While Hayward’s wasn’t named in the ad, he said he could tell by the wording that the restaurant in question was Hayward’s. “A lot of people say, ‘Living the dream,’ facetiously,” Eric says.“Really, I am living the dream. I always wanted to own a restaurant. I was smoking meats when I was 10, 11 years old … so I don’t know, it was in my blood.” The Sweeneys have roughly 60 years of combined experience in the barbecue and restaurant industry. Reilly says between his parents and himself, he has always been around the service industry. “I have an affinity for helping people, and, of course, food,” Reilly says. But being involved in a family-owned business is more than that—for Reilly, it means even the customers are family. “We’ve had people who grew with us and we would consider part of our family,” Reilly says. “When it’s a family restaurant, everybody’s part of the family.”

A JOHNSON COUNTY STAPLE Hayward’s first opened in 1972 in Overland Park near West 95th Street and Antioch Road. Roughly 10 years later, the business moved to College Boulevard and Antioch Road. “[It was] one of the first building restaurants up there even before Corporate Woods,” Reilly says.

Hayward’s had gone through “a few different hands,” Riley says, before his father purchased it in 2013. Three years later, the Sweeneys moved Hayward’s to a smaller location in Lenexa. All the communities Hayward’s has resided in embraced them, according to Eric. “Business has grown right out of the gate. … The community helped us get to where we are today,” he says. When Hayward’s outgrew its Lenexa space, the county’s oldest barbecue moved to Shawnee in 2019. “We knew that we’d be adopted really well,” Reilly says. “It wasn’t too far away from the other locations.” In the move to Shawnee, Hayward’s added a second smoker due to the amount of business they brought in shortly after opening. There were even days the restaurant sold out. “The Shawnee community has been very embracing,” Reilly says, “and that’s the best thing about it; that family atmosphere really helps out.” New customers visit Hayward’s every day, according to Reilly, and in the 50 years the business has existed, it has had a tendency to draw regulars who visit daily. “I would say it’s been much, much busier than we could have ever anticipated,” Reilly says. “But as far as moving to Shawnee, we’ve still experienced a lot of love and a lot of embrace just from years of being around. What surprised me the most was we still have people who have been eating at Hayward’s since 1972.” Customers are so much a part of the business that a wing sauce is named after one of the regulars.

“the shawnee community has been very embracing. and that’s the best thing about it ; that family atmosphere really helps out.” –Reilly Sweeney

MANAGING AND GROWING IN A PANDEMIC Setting up shop on one of the“busiest streets in Shawnee,” according to Reilly, was a plus, and the spacious building itself was a draw. “Obviously, in hindsight, we had no idea what was going to happen in March,” he says, referring to the Covid-19 pandemic that prompted businesses to close their doors to the public. Had they remained in Lenexa, he says, it would have been harder to “stay afloat” because the space was smaller. “We knew that the people of Shawnee are awesome, and they would take us in with loving arms,” Reilly says. Running a restaurant through the pandemic gave Reilly a new perspective. When restaurants had to close in March, he expected business to be a lot slower due to a lack of dine-in guests. However, community support continued daily. “The people of Shawnee are huge fans of small businesses and family-owned businesses,” he says. Reilly says the keys to surviving the pandemic have been the Shawnee location’s garage doors, which allow for ventilation, and its ample space, which allows for social distancing. And with restrictions partially loosening throughout throughout the county, Hayward’s has reopened its dining area and started providing live music.

CONSISTENCY IS KEY Because Hayward’s has been an established restaurant for five decades, Reilly says the key to success is consistency. “The fact that we are the oldest barbecue restaurant in Johnson County speaks volumes,” he says. “We’ve been doing it right for so long, we’re not going to cut corners.” But they will make some small changes to “keep things fresh,” he says. Hayward’s has added specials throughout the week, for example. They also have a “pretty solid” cocktail and beer list, and the cocktails are “catered to changing seasons. One aspect that remains consistent is that Hayward’s offers the “best service around,” Reilly says. “[We always] make it a point to make sure that everyone’s taken care of and gets the same type of treatment. I always say you can hear people talking with a smile, even with the masks on.” Hayward’s had only been open about nine months when construction prompted the closure of exit and entrance ramps off 75th Street—also amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The menu also has undergone a few changes. “We wouldn’t be here unless the people were here for us,” Eric says. “So that’s near and dear to my heart. I have a passion like nobody else for this business. People can feel that when they come in.”

Hayward’s Pit BBQ Fast Facts Hayward’s Pit BBQ opened in 1972 in Overland Park and was located off of 95th and Antioch Road. About 10 years later, Hayward’s BBQ moved to College Boulevard and Antioch Road. In 2013, Eric Sweeney purchased Hayward’s BBQ. The Sweeneys downsized and moved Hayward’s BBQ to Lenexa in 2016. The Sweeneys then upgraded, moving Hayward’s BBQ to Shawnee in May 2019. Hayward’s BBQ sauce is sold at various retail sites, including KC Grilling Co. in Olathe and on Amazon. Though Hayward’s BBQ left Overland Park in 2016, the former Hayward’s site on Antioch Road is now home to a new barbecue joint, Q39.

Castle new owners offer a unique wine and dining experience in the historic caenen castle. stor y by Beth Kor negay

hen dairy farmer Remigius ‘Remi’ Achille Caenen immigrated from Belgium to the Shawnee area at the turn of the 20th century, he moved into an area with plenty of wideopen spaces. Caenen decided land located at today’s 12401 Johnson Drive would be the perfect place to build a home for his family. He used native Kansas limestone from the property to build what would be known to locals as Caenen Castle. Said to be modeled after a French or Belgian castle, Caenen cut all the stone by hand. He also built a home across the street made of leftover stone. Caenen spared no expense in his attention to detail and luxury; the home contained a full basement and 10 bedrooms. Records also show Caenen installed a “lighting plant” to produce gas for the interior lights by using water and calcium carbide shards in addition to

p h o t o g r a p hy b y S a r a h R e e v e s

a very modern interior water system. The total cost of the home was $10,000, and it was completed in 1907. Members of the Caenen family lived in the castle until 1925 when it was rented to a Dr. Elstone, who turned it into a nursing home for the mentally ill, calling it the Monrovia Rest Home. Through the years, the building has been used as a night club, a restaurant, and a haunted house Halloween attraction. Most recently, Renee Kelly operated Harvest restaurant in the castle after the building was renovated from 2003 to 2005. It was added to the Register of Historic Kansas Places in 2006. When Kelly closed her restaurant in 2017, the castle sat vacant with a for-sale sign in the front yard. With no buyers beating down the heavy oak doors with offers, the building and its contents went up for auction in 2019.

28

new owners Originally from the Kansas City area, Carla and Dan Dyer began talking about what to do during retirement and started looking for the perfect place to host a winefocused hospitality business. They were living at Florida at the time, and, after looking at the Kansas City area for potential rental properties, Dan Dyer ran across the auction listing for the Caenen Castle. With the auction just three days away, the Dyers hopped on a plane and flew to Kansas City to see the property in person. They didn’t tell any of their family or friends that they were in town looking at the castle. The couple visited the castle several times over the course of two days, developed a business plan, and decided they wanted to participate in the online auction. On the day of the auction, the Dyers were heading back to Florida. The couple was at the airport counter when they logged in to the auction, submitted their bid, and saw the castle would be theirs. “We didn’t know where this was leading us,” Carla Dyer says. “I think we may be the only people to ever buy a castle online at an airline counter! The castle spoke to us, and we felt attracted to it the first time we looked at it.” Inside the castle, the Dyers have added their own touches. While many of the renovations aren’t readily seen—roof repair, new air conditioning and heating units, new mortar in the stones in the turrets— they have also beautifully landscaped the grounds. A cuckoo clock from their time living in Switzerland hangs in the great hall. Stones were removed from the southside of the

building and repurposed, expanding the building to house a farm winery outlet space. An industrial kitchen with a professional chef will allow the business to serve delicious cuisine, and a wine cellar is available to rent for private functions.

now open When the renovations were complete, the Dyers opened Wandering Vine at the Castle, an “urban wine experience.” The couple has partnered with Grace Hill Winery in Whitewater (just north of Wichita) to stock the wine cellar, and Wandering Vine will serve as a farm winery outlet for Grace Hill. The couple had been making red wine for 10 years as a hobby. Their friends enjoyed the wine, so the couple went looking for a Kansas winery to partner with as they were preparing to open the castle. Dan Dyer’s formulas for red wine are being produced at Grace Hill Winery and will be released next year. On her first birthday after purchasing the castle, Carla Dyer received a tiara because, as her daughter told her, “every castle needs a queen.” Now all the women in the family have their own tiaras, which are on display behind the bar at Wandering Vine. While they now own the castle, the Dyers recognize the rich history of the building itself and its role in the community. “We feel like the castle belongs to the community and we are its curators,” Carla says. “It is up to us to make something the community enjoys and is proud of.” Touted as much more than a restaurant, Wandering Vine will allow the Dyers to focus on the wine

29

experience and booking private events. Over time, they’ll expand dining hours, and the menu will evolve. When it opened in late October, Wandering Vine offered a menu focused on fresh food and items based on local history with ties to the Santa Fe, California, and Oregon Trails. Described as American West cuisine, the menu also features Kansas steak and pork. The Dyers met when they were 15 years old at Bishop Miege High School in Roeland Park and have been married for more than 40 years. While their roots are in Kansas City, the couple and their two children traveled extensively and moved eight times during their marriage, living in Europe and visiting Asia and South America many times. It was during those travels that they took local culinary classes in Morocco, Spain, Chile, and Italy. When deciding on a name for their business, the couple was inspired by their travels. “Life has taken us to many places, and we took those opportunities to explore and sample cultures around the world, driven by our passion for food and wine. Anywhere you wander, joy and celebration are linked to the food and drink. Now our life story has brought us back here to grow in this new direction. But remember, not all who wander are lost,” says Dan. The Dyers are hands-on owners, and their focus with Wandering Vine is on hospitality. They interviewed many sommeliers over several months before finding the perfect match for their new business, and you’ll find the couple working in the dining room and the wine tasting area. With Covid-19 social distancing guidelines, the Dyers have reduced seating by about 40 percent from what was originally planned and have built partitions between tables. Masks are required for staff at all times as well as for guests while moving around the building. Hours of operation are 4–8 p.m. on Thursdays, 4–10 p.m. on Fridays, 11 a.m.–10 p.m. on Saturdays, and 11 a.m.–8 p.m. on Sundays. Additional information can be found at www.WanderingVine.com as well as on the business’ Facebook page, @wanderingvineKC.

pon entering I Heart Local, a stylish boutique featuring local artisans located in downtown Shawnee, you’ll be met by sunny store proprietor Breck Liston. Bounding closely behind is her equally sunny boxer, Buster. “He goes with me everywhere,” Breck cheerfully reports. “A lot of people who come into the store know him. Someone is always asking, ‘Where’s Buster?’” Buster isn’t the only element of I Heart Local that’s been generating buzz around Shawnee. Since the store opened in October 2019, Breck and her makers have been the talk of the town. “I’m so glad you’re here!” and “It’s nice not to have to drive all the way downtown (Kansas City) to shop local” and “So-and-so told me to come check this place out!” are just a few of the comments Breck hears often from her customers. Comprising 28 local makers, I Heart Local carries everything from honey to clothing to dog treats (see “Pawsable” on page 33). Central to the focus of the store is Breck’s own line of metalwork called Good Vibes Metal. In fact, Good Vibes Metal was the antecedent for the entire I Heart Local concept. “The boutique is actually our second gig,” says Breck of the store. Prior to getting into the boutique business, Breck worked with her family’s tech business for 10 years. After a client put in an order for a number of custom-made computer chassis, the business purchased a plasma cutter, a machine that cuts through materials such as metal and copper by means of an accelerated jet of hot plasma and is typically operated through computer software. The client never ordered anything again, and the Listons were stuck with the machine. “We were wondering what to do with it,” says Breck. “My father-in-law showed me how to use the machine, and the first thing I made was a ‘Boxer on Duty’ metal sign. It took me about a year to get the hang of the software. I have a business degree with no sort of graphic design experience.”

32 A lot of people who come into the store know him. Someone is always asking, ‘Where’s Buster?‘ After Breck had created a few designs, she began listing them on Etsy, an online marketplace that showcases makers from around the world. “Good Vibes started as an Etsy store, and we now have thousands of sales. We opened the Etsy store in 2016, but it didn’t really pick up until the end of 2017 and then the 2018 Christmas sales were insane.” Her Etsy store was soon discovered by an organizer of local pop-up events, who invited Breck to share her wares, after which the business really exploded. Breck had initially leased the space that currently houses I Heart Local just for production of her metal works. As the business grew, so did the need for square footage. They leased the neighboring larger suite to house production, after which they were left with the lease on the original space. “We had to move right then and there, because our sales were out of control, and we had to have a second machine running.” says Breck. “We tried to sublease the original space, but it didn’t really pan out.” After consulting with a few close maker friends, Breck came up with the idea to provide a venue to sell handmade products created within the metro. “I have a lot of friends through the maker community. It’s a small community and people are really supportive of each other. So, in September of 2019 we started renovating this space,” Breck says. The boutique places a special emphasis on women’s empowerment. Of the 28 makers selling within the shop, 26 of them are female-owned businesses. “ There are so many male-owned businesses out there, and we wanted to give women an opportunity first,” says Breck. Breck placed a call on Facebook, and the response was overwhelming. I Heart Local typically houses between 25 and 30 vendors, with low turnover rates. “We have a wait list,” says Breck of the makers eager to showcase their products. “And sometimes people just show up. We can’t take everyone because we don’t want our vendors competing with one another. We did jury and vet everyone that applied, and we selected about a fourth of the people who applied.”

The I Heart Local business model started out being similar to a flea market or antique mall, wherein vendors would rent space within the shelves of the store. This model only lasted a short while. “We started by charging a monthly fee for each space within the boutique. Once Covid-19 hit, I stopped charging that fee,” says Breck. “My metal business was doing well, and we didn’t need the monthly fee to keep the boutique running. I felt like I wanted to help out the other makers.” I Heart Local has also given back to the community in other ways. “People are always reaching out for support,” says Breck of their charitable efforts. “We always donate a gift basket to the Bishop Miege auction. We’ve also given to a couple of local elementary schools. I’m not very good at saying no.” The community has been quick to return the support. “The Chamber of Commerce came in shortly after our soft opening. They pitched to us, and I was sold when they told me I could have a ribbon cutting ceremony,” says Breck of her involvement with the local business group. “All of the Chamber members came in around the holidays and shopped and bought so many things from the store.” The Chamber has also been helpful in aiding Breck in making connections to other local businesses, of which she has many. “I’m friends and talk with a lot of other local business owners. We’ve done several events with Servaes Brewery. Just little sip and shops and pop-up events. We’ve also partnered with Shenanigans and Transport,” says Breck. Good Vibes was one of the first businesses in the downtown strip. Breck has had the unique opportunity of having a front-row seat to watch the growth of downtown Shawnee. “I love the location. Even five years ago, there wasn’t much here,” says Breck. “Better restaurants are coming in and the breweries are really bringing people down here. It’s been fun to be part of that growth. I love Shawnee! I love the people. I love the community. It’s just a great place to own a business.” Good vibes, indeed.

OVERCOMING OUR COMMUNITY’S

Economic Challenges Despite the challenges presented by Covid-19, Shawnee’s economy remains resilient. Undoubtedly certain sectors of our economy have taken a hit, but we’ve seen new economic development happen throughout the year to help bolster our outlook for the future. The most significant project announced in 2020, and perhaps in the last decade in Shawnee, was the Heartland Logistics Park, which accelerated its timeline due to Covid-19. While some development announcements stalled due to the uncertain economic climate, Heartland Logistics Park (formerly known as Project Homeland) moved its construction date up two years to 2020 as its ideal tenants are manufacturing, logistics or warehousing – all sectors that saw increased demand due to Covid-19. This development will add over 1,500 jobs to Shawnee and offer up to 2 million square feet of space. Additionally, other office-specific construction projects continue to progress with both Schier Products and Hoss & Brown’s new Shawnee headquarters nearing completion. Downtown Shawnee continues to see increased investment as well. Neiman Now!, the city’s pedestrian-friendly construction project, was completed early this year. Improvements included street lane dining, widening bike and walking lanes, new parking areas and more! Many new offerings also opened or are nearing opening nearby, as residential development Sixty16 finishes construction soon, in addition to McLain’s Market and Drastic Measures, which now serve customers daily! More announcements have also happened this year as Old Shawnee Pizza debuted renderings for a new outdoor deck, and the Hartman Hardware’s building was sold to Box Development as an envisioned two-story restaurant concept. Box Development is also the visionary of the soon-to-break-ground Blume Townhome Development. All of these exciting developments are just along Nieman Road in the half-mile stretch from Johnson Drive to Shawnee Mission Parkway! Southeast Shawnee was no stranger to exciting announcements either, as we also saw a variety of happenings along 75th Street. Pathlight Brewing opened at first for takeout, and then opened their taproom; Seafood Island is now serving Cajun style seafood, and the exciting Westbrooke Green mixed-use development has progressed through its necessary city approvals for impending construction. Two other major announcements in Shawnee deserve recognition: Amazon announced they would triple the size of their footprint at the Westlink Business Center, adding an additional 170,000 square feet to its distribution hub. Johnson County Parks and Recreation Commissioners Board also began construction on their over $30 million in improvements to Mid-America Sports Complex through 2025, which is a major economic hub for tourism in Shawnee. In addition to these developments and announcements, the Shawnee Chamber and City of Shawnee staff have worked tirelessly to uplift, support, promote and relieve businesses that have been affected by Covid-19. Whether through distributing the City’s SERA grants, communicating important relief information to Shawnee businesses; advocating for local, county, state or federal regulatory and financial relief; or just the simple act of listening to our member businesses, our organization made sure to support our local economy in any way we could.
