While the world’s business landscape is often changing—in some areas, drastically— it’s comforting to realize that locally the view is a bit different. Shawnee is home to a number of manufacturers and other businesses; our centralized location helps draw in many different business models and concepts.
In this issue, we take a look at a few companies that have included Shawnee, Kansas, in their addresses for a number of years. Schier Products (page 8) is a family-run business with 20 years in the area, and Surface Center Interiors (page 13) has been a member of the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce for three decades.
The longevity extends to other arenas as well. Shawnee Community Services (page 24) is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its mission of lending a helping hand to members of the community. Author and consultant Rick Tirrell (page 22) established his strategic planning firm, Navigator Group, in 1998. And while Solid Ground Engineering (page 18) is probably one of the newer companies spotlighted in this issue, the organization received certification in 2009, so it’s been part of the Shawnee landscape for more than a few years as well.
A community benefits and gains an identity from its long-standing businesses, and fortune has smiled on Shawnee over the years as companies have continued to build and thrive within the city limits. We can all be proud of our city and the businesses that have found their way to Shawnee, no matter their focus.
Welcome to Shawnee and welcome home!

Schier Products’ owners bring a family model to their business endeavor.
To step onto the 30 acres that make up Schier Products is to be welcomed by an in-house trail system, a basketball hoop, and off-duty employees enjoying a beer while playing ping pong.
“We have fun, we play together,” says Charlie Ismert, president and sales director of Schier Products. “On purpose, we didn’t want to be locked into an industrial park.”
Schier Products, located at 6455 Woodland Drive, has a 20-year history in Shawnee under the its current leaders and a reputation for focusing on its employees. Cousins Luke and Charlie Ismert currently head up the grease-interceptor manufacturing company. Charlie says his uncle—Luke’s father—purchased Schier in 2002.
A grease interceptor is a device installed in a business’ plumbing to collect and trap fats, oil, and grease carried along as water moves through the system.
“He was always my role model, a guy I looked up to since I was in grade school, middle school,” Charlie says.
The family, according to Luke, has been involved in various aspects of the plumbing industry in south Kansas City “for eons.”
“Just being in a manufacturing environment where you can see something go from concept to reality … there’s something super satisfying about that,” says Luke, Schier’s CEO.
The significance of remaining a family business is the ability to have an independent approach.
“I think it’s just basically the freedom to call the shots and decide what kind of company we wanted to be,” Charlie says. “I can’t speak for other business owners or companies but ours has been fantastic.”
The company, Luke says, had largely been used as a “little test lab for business ideas.”
“We try ideas and see how they work,” Luke says. “One of the ideas we were really interested in trying was just an ultra-focus and doing fewer things. A ‘less is more’ type of thing.”
For Charlie’s part, he says they consider themselves “business scientists.”
“Focus’ sounds maybe boring or cliché, but it’s truly our No. 1 competitive advantage,” Charlie says. “We’re always talking about how, even still, we can focus the company tighter and tighter.”
Charlie says that when you find a niche worth going after “then you kind of dig in and hunker down.”
“Most people, I don’t think, don’t think that way … When you’re a focus company you can kind of run laps around other people who are kind of treating your category like a side hustle,” Charlie says.
That’s how they came to focus purely on grease-trap interceptors, and that concept has “dramatically changed the company,” according to Luke.

a good neighbor, State Farm is there.®
Justin W. Labart“We have a purpose, a higher purpose that we adopted, to improve the lives of our employees,” Luke says. “Everything we do is in service of that. So we’re looking at increasing something, some kind of benefit each and every year.”
Those changes could be pay, health-care benefits, or anything in between.
“The [thought] behind that is that like a lot of us, we want to do something to make the world better. And we don’t really have a lot of control to do that … [but we] feel like maybe a ripple can be created,” Luke says.
However, Luke says it’s not necessarily about making people happy, rather it’s about treating them like family.
“That’s kind of the thing, period. You’re not always making your family happy, but you always try to do right by them,” he says. Company culture, according to Luke, is “pretty unique,” but nothing “super cheesy” or over the top.
“It’s just feels like a family,” Luke says. “I love coming to work every day … All through the [COVID-19] pandemic, we had no problem keeping people in person and getting people back after the pandemic. People wanted to come back.”
Because of their association with the restaurant industry—which Luke says “has taken a direct missile
strike from the pandemic”—Schier Products also dealt with supply-chain shortages.
“The fact that we are built to be resilient, because of our purpose, because we want to maintain good paying jobs through all the ups and downs, we were able to just ride the wave,” Luke says. “The wave up and the wave down.”
Schier Products also has a focus on lean manufacturing, which minimizes waste while maximizing productivity.
“Lean manufacturing is intrinsic to our purpose statement,” Charlie says.
One of the company’s key performance indicators is tenure, as they regularly celebrate 5-, 10-, 15- and 20-year anniversaries.
“There’s a lot to be said about hanging up your coat and staying a while … and I’m a big believer in that. You get better at things if you let time pass, you get your black belt essentially,” Charlie says. “I think the work becomes more meaningful, too.”
Luke says Schier Products wants to be a fixture in the Shawnee community.
“We’re stoked about being in Shawnee. It’s a perfect match for our culture,” Luke says. “It feels like home. It’s got a little bit of country, a little bit of city.”

Locally owned Surface Center Interiors takes its mission seriously to customize and install countertops and more.
Rod Savage walks with purpose through the bright, spacious showroom at Surface Center Interiors on Shawnee Mission Parkway. Aligned throughout the showroom’s main space are large pieces of natural stone— marble and granite, as well as pieces of manmade quartz and solid surfaces from national brands such as Corian, Wilsonart, Cambria, Cosentino, and MSI. Along a back wall are small samples of kitchen backsplashes, and there are several staged kitchen areas throughout the room.
Savage, who became president of what’s more commonly referred to as SCI Surfaces after acquiring the company in 2015, walks and talks on point and with commitment … probably a major reason his company has firmly established itself as one of the top fabricators and installers of residential and commercial countertops in the Kansas City area, as well as one of the top businesses in Shawnee.
“This business is about two things—people and process,” says Savage, who employs more than 80 people throughout his showroom and fabrication shop. “The people here know about the business.”
Savage claims he knew nothing about countertops and surfaces before buying the company. He left a family-owned business where he had worked for years and was at what he calls a “fork in the road. I was looking for a new direction.”
The Overland Park native began looking for a local business to buy and came across SCI, which had formed when Ameristone, a long-standing Shawnee company, and start-up Cutting Edge Granite & Tile merged in 2010 as a means to survive the housing crisis of 2008. That’s also around the time the business moved to its current location at 12800 Shawnee Mission Parkway.
When it comes to describing what SCI does, Savage keeps it simple and straightforward—template, fabricate, and install custom countertops for both residential and commercial properties. He says the company’s business typically balances out around 70/30, residential to commercial.
SCI runs up to eight install crews. It services the entire Kansas City metropolitan area for residential jobs and up to a 250-mile radius for commercial jobs.
In addition to countertops for kitchens, both indoor and out, SCI also custom-fabricates and installs backsplashes, sinks, and surface areas around indoor and outdoor fireplaces and gathering areas. Commercially, the company traditionally works with corporate, education, health care, and retail spaces, working directly with architects, developers, and general contractors to follow design ideas from sketch to finished product. SCI also imports and installs custom-designed countertops for hotels, multifamily dwellings, and senior living centers.
From its fabrication shop behind the showroom, SCI staff, which Savage regards among the best in the business, can take pieces of natural stone, manmade material, or solid surface and cut, shape, and polish it into finished works of art.
“The key to getting repeat business in this type of work is to provide a good customer experience,” Savage says. “Be easy to do business with. Be on time and on budget. If you’re reliable, you’re doing well.”
Weathering the Pandemic
SCI hasn’t been immune to the challenges during these last two years of the COVID-19 pandemic. Like every business, finding qualified workers has been difficult, and Savage says the business has relied more and more on sub-contractors to get work completed. He and his staff had to be flexible and adapt to mitigate risk during the height of the pandemic.
“We had to overcome changes in how you work,” he says. “We had to adapt, evolve, and modify, find ways to get the job done. Most were just common-sense steps.”
But, he says, business remained strong throughout the pandemic. Demand for housing has remained healthy. And all those new homes and apartments need countertops, backsplashes, and sinks.
Natalie Hill, above, showroom consultant, studies sample pieces of surface materials in one of the staging areas in the SCI showroom.; Rod Savage, at right, has served as president of SCI Surfaces since acquiring the company in 2015.
“There are some headwinds coming because of economic forces slowing down,” Savage says. “Business is still strong though.”
It’s a business Savage says he and his staff are constantly trying to grow, improve, and innovate. Part of that includes being an active steward in the Shawnee community. SCI has been an active member of the Chamber of Commerce for 12 years, dating back to the merger and SCI’s formation. It’s a relationship Savage says his company cherishes.
“It’s an active relationship that we participate in because we care about the local community and local issues,” he says. “Shawnee is an excellent place to do business. A lot of our employees come from here.”
“The Shawnee Chamber is proud and lucky to have businesses like Surface Center Interiors, who support this community,” says Brandon Wilcox, director of investor services with the chamber. “Rod and his team at SCI are ‘mission members.’ They understand the importance of the work that goes into creating and sustaining a vibrant community and have invested in those efforts for more than a decade.”
However, as Savage quickly points out, SCI’s business extends beyond the Shawnee city limits.
“We do jobs all over the city every day,” he says. “From a market standpoint, I’d probably say we’re one of the top three (countertop companies) in the city.”
There’s an extraordinary power that comes when one combines great skill and a lack of care about what others think of you. Andrea Goodhope has that power. As the founder and senior professional engineer of Solid Ground Engineering will tell you, engineering is a tough industry for women. Still, her determination and expertise have pushed her to rise to the top despite her critics.
Her most recent accomplishment? Solid Ground Engineering was named as one of the inspectors for the new KCI terminal project. The project may be Solid Ground’s biggest to date, but it’s a natural step in the development of Goodhope’s business.
Andrea Goodhope is a Kansas native—she attended Olathe South High School before attending Kansas State University. Her high school interests put her on the path to the airport. She loved and excelled in math, and her teachers and counselors pushed her to pursue an engineering degree. She completed her bachelor’s degree in civil engineering at K-State and interned at Terracon, a national engineering consulting firm headquartered in Olathe.
After graduation, she worked as a staff structural engineer at highly respected engineering and design firms such as George Butler Associates and BSC Group but couldn’t find the right fit.
“I just decided that designing buildings was not for me,” Goodhope says. “I’m too much of a social person and needed to get out in the field where I could enjoy the weather and talk to people. Designing buildings is a very isolating—sitting
at a desk, never talking to anyone, crunching numbers all day. It just didn’t fit my personality.”
Goodhope tried to find a better fit. She took personality tests to see what her options might be, and all the tests agreed—she was destined to be an engineer. She took night classes at JCCC to see what might spark her interest. She was at the end of her rope. She looked to God and her Bible study for support, praying that a path forward would present itself.
The next day, as she stopped for her morning coffee at QuikTrip, she ran into an old friend from Terracon. During their chat, he casually suggested something that would change Goodhope’s life.
“He said, ‘Just thought I’d throw this out there … I don’t know if you’re happy doing what you’re doing or if you’re looking to make a change, but there is currently only one women’s business enterprise (WBE) certified special inspection agency in Kansas City. It would be nice to have options, especially when we’re really busy,’” says Goodhope.
At that suggestion, Goodhope says it was as if a lightbulb was dancing around her head with a neon sign saying, “Listen to what he’s saying!” She had loved field inspection when she was training in college, and the need for female engineering businesses was real. She quit her job at BSC Group the following Monday and established Solid Ground Engineering.
Terracon acted as an incubator for Goodhope and Solid Ground—they were her primary client for two years and allowed her to use their trucks and equipment until she could afford

her own. But as she found her footing, the business expanded, taking on clients such as Children’s Mercy Park, Cerner, and the Hillshire Brands KC/Tyson manufacturing facility.
But what does an inspector do exactly? Goodhope explains she and her team find mistakes before they become problems, potentially saving money and lives.
“The way I explain it is that we are construction cops,” Goodhope says. “We don’t design or build the buildings but enforce the approved construction documents. It’s basically enforcing the manufacturer’s instructions, making sure the contractors are following them.”
Her team ensures the correct products are being installed and in the proper manner. If something can’t be fixed immediately, it’s written up as a deviation to be corrected. Once the project is completed, the building can only receive its certificate of occupancy if all deviations have been corrected.
Solid Ground Engineering specializes in structural inspections, including steel framing, wood framing, masonry, and concrete. They also inspect water barriers, commercial roofing, and exterior insulation finishing systems (EIFS).
Since its inception, Solid Ground has expanded to include Goodhope and six employees, and she says she has plans to add more personnel in the near future to keep up with demand for inspections. Still, Goodhope says that more often than not, she faces snide comments and pushback from construction crews when she shows up on site.
“The industry hasn’t changed much over the years, but I’ve changed,” Goodhope says. “I no longer care if people see me as bossy when I see something wrong on a jobsite and tell them they have to fix it. I know what they call me behind my back, but I have a job to do. I’m trying to break through the glass ceiling and set a good example for my 10-year-old daughter. I’m trying to lead by example that we can do whatever job we want to do.”
This reputation for honesty and quality work is part of what lead KCI project manager IntertekPSI to choose Goodhope and Solid Ground Engineering. The new terminal project awarded work to more than 100 WBEs and minority business enterprises—Solid Ground captured 15% of the inspection work, covering the steel framing, masonry, glass clips for the walls, the parking garage, and the glazing system for the walls. The company spent a year and a half working on the project.
That time was often spent at the top of a boom lift, overlooking the giant skeleton on the terminal. The height of the structure proved to be a challenge, and Goodhope says they had to snake the basket through the intercrossed steel.
“You can see for miles up there and it was really different from the framing that I’m used to seeing,” Goodhope says. “Trying to get the boom lift was tough when there was already steel built all around you. It seemed like it took 20 minutes to get from the ground to the highest level of framing just by making gentle movements with the lift, slowly and carefully.”
While the climb, both to the top of the KCI terminal and to this point in her career, may have been nerve-wracking, it was certainly worth it for the view. Learn more about Solid Ground Engineering at www.SolidGroundEngineering.com.
Andrea Goodhope started Solid Ground Engineering when she was single and had nothing to lose. “I figured that if I failed miserably and lost my house, my cats could sleep in a cardboard box under a bridge somewhere with me,” she says. But since founding Solid Ground, she’s expanded her personal life, too.
When she’s not perched precariously on top of a naked building, Goodhope enjoys spending time with her husband, Dan, and their daughter, Gabby. Their dogs, Casey and Henry, round out the family.
On any given Saturday night, you’ll find Goodhope and her family searching out the best sushi in town, working on home improvement projects, and gardening.
Shawnee author pens debut novel, bridging gap between industries.
Raised in a self-employed family, business was almost always a topic of conversation for Rick Tirrell.
“It was like getting an MBA by the time I was 16,” says Tirrell, an author, psychologist, and consultant. “You see how that world works.”
As time passed, he developed his own leadership skills and now believes there has never been a greater need for good leadership.
“And there’ve been greater crises, if you think of World War II or the Cuban Missile Crisis. These were more profound crises than what we have now, but there was distinct leadership,” Tirrell says. “There were clear goals and there was consensus, and I feel like as I go about talking to people in organizations, largely, we don’t have enough of that.”
Organizations, school districts, and businesses could benefit from distinct leadership, clear goals, and consensus, according to Tirrell. Plus, he says there are stages to leadership—becoming a good leader, creating followers and connecting with people, and becoming a leader of leaders.
“What I saw was that few leaders really worked up that ladder the way they perhaps could have,” Tirrell says. “And so I saw this need for leadership. And that’s what led me to write this book.”
Leadership Rites of Passage, his first novel, features Joe Miller, who comes to run his father’s company after the father’s death.
“Now he is the leader of this company, and it has huge debt. And the country goes into a recession, and he’s scared,” Tirrell says. “He
has 75 people who need to put food on the table. They need to pay their rent, their mortgage, you know. So he’s scared.”
Miller faces 16 challenges over the course of his career that are accompanied by conversations with his mentor, Sagan Cruise.
“They develop this long-term mentoring relationship,” Tirrell says, “and Sagan is masterful at getting Joe to hesitantly expose his weakness, his challenges, and then Sagan will point to one book in the reference section and say, ‘Joe, you must read this book.’”
Tirrell wrote the book backwards—beginning with the reference section, listing leadership books he would tell his younger self to read.
“The biggest challenge for me was that I came to really like these two people,” he says. “I want to see what happens in the next chapter, but there wasn’t a next chapter.”
Writing books wasn’t new to Tirrell, with The Wisdom of Resilience Leaders currently available on Amazon alongside Leadership Rites of Passage.
However, Tirrell, who holds a doctorate in psychology, began his career as a “very traditional psychologist.”
“I never thought I would be doing what I’m doing now,” he says. “They say we have multiple careers, but I didn’t believe back in the day.”
Tirrell says he put together a group practice that at one time included 11 psychologists, but the group didn’t have a consensus.

“What we had was a collection of independent practices under one roof,” Tirrell says. “Rather than as an organization saying ‘here’s our core values, here’s our mission and here’s how we’re going to address the world uniformly as we go out’ … so I struggled with this. And then eventually I began doing management consulting and I was flying all over the country and dealing with people in big companies.”
Most psychologists, according to Tirrell, don’t have an interest in business at all.
“So they are, many of them, solo practitioners, and they start here and go inward. And that’s what’s beautiful about them; that’s what’s great about them,” he says.
However, strategic planning and business strategy aren’t too far off from personal strategy, Tirrell says. Businesses need to look for where opportunities are, where they can stand out as unique or different. He founded Navigator Group in 1998 to focus on strategic planning, corporate culture, and leadership development.
“If you work at Walmart, it’s all about efficiencies,” Tirrell says. “That’s their genius. So is the culture. Be here on time, move quickly. They purchase efficiently … But if you go over to Hallmark where they create wonderful cards, there’s a creative piece to their culture and Walmart doesn’t have that. So I began to question if you have a crisp strategy, what kind of culture should you build? And the culture should match the strategy. So there’s a lot of psychology in that, but there’s a lot of business in that.”
Aside from his writing endeavors, Tirrell also holds leadership seminars with a focus on the relationship between business and psychology.
“The reaction to this is very positive because business leaders are eager to receive anything that will help. Anything that will just incrementally give them just the tiniest little advantage,” he says. Tirrell lives in Overland Park, but his office is in Shawnee.
“We‘ve gotten tremendous support from the leadership development team and from the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce,” says Tirrell, an active member of the chamber. “It’s a real gem, I think, in the community. It’s terrific.”

For 40 years, Shawnee Community Services has offered assistance to those in need.
Lori N. had two elementary school-aged children when she found herself in dire straits. Going through a divorce, she had found a place for the three of them to live, but there wasn’t money left over to furnish the new apartment. She credits Shawnee Community Services, a not-for-profit agency in Shawnee, with coming to her family’s aid by providing a couch, clothing, food, and other necessities. Even after moving, Lori says she would frequently stop by the store to pick up free bread, desserts, and produce when available, and go through the clothes bin to find items for herself and her daughters.
“When I really needed them, they were there,” she says. “We had nothing to move with and for them to be there and help us during a time of need, that was amazing.”
Shawnee Community Services has been helping people in emergency situations, like Lori, for 40 years.
Shawnee Community Services was founded on the vision of Evelyn VanKempseke. After her passing in 2015, her daughter Sylvia Terry, who had worked for the agency full-time since 1992, has carried on as president and CEO. Terry says her goal is to “keep Evelyn’s vision alive, while adjusting to the current times.”
Step inside the store area at Shawnee Community Services and the small size of the shop belies the magnitude of help provided. The original building also had a small shopping area, but since a complete teardown and reopening in 2013, there’s a front shop, a massive storeroom filled with pantry items for food boxes, and a loading and storage area for donations. The pantry boxes require an appointment, but there’s still plenty to be found for free—or at most a few dollars—in the store. One wall is filled with baker racks that hold free bread and desserts from local bakeries. There’s another rack with some fresh fruit or other free food items. Then there’s the thrift store where visitors can choose from jackets, purses, clothing, and bedding—depending on what’s available— some items for free, others for a dollar or two.
In addition to the free food and clothing, Shawnee Community Services offers help through additional programs. One new program, started because of the rising gas prices, offers fuel cards. Late summer brings backpacks filled with school supplies for children. And during the holidays, there’s a free Christmas party for children with games and prizes, and every child leaves with a wrapped present. There’s a free raffle for a Christmas tree and a lot of activities packed into the two-hour event. This year’s event is scheduled for December 18 at the Shawnee Civic Center.
Then there are extra food distributions around the holidays, providing 250 to 300 holiday meals at both Thanksgiving and Christmas.
While the majority of the families they work with are “one away”—meaning they are one paycheck away from homelessness—the agency has also provided bags of food in conjunction with Johnson County Mental Health to distribute to the homeless.
The needs are as varied as the individuals, and Shawnee Community Services does whatever possible to meet individual needs, whether it’s a cell phone and prepaid phone card, or a bus ticket.
“Another client got a job through a temp service and he needed steel-toed shoes and work gloves,” Terry says. “It was after hours when I got the request, so I sent Anna (with Johnson County Mental Health) a $50 Walmart gift card and she went to Walmart and bought the steel-toed shoes and work gloves.
“We call that ‘direct client assistance.’ And while we don’t normally work with homeless people, we target the people who are one away. ‘One away’ is any one incident that’s going to cause you to be on hard times.”
Direct assistance, Terry explains, involves providing whatever a client needs in the moment. She says while other organizations may have steps they must take because of grants, Shawnee Community Services is donation based, freeing them from requiring certain criteria for clients to qualify. “That gives us more ability to help out in a crisis—versus someone having to wait weeks for an appointment only to find out the agency can’t help them,” she says.
Because of this, she says they’re not typically helping with expenses such as rent, but more immediate items like fuel cards, or even prescriptions. “Whatever they need right now.”
One example of the agency working with individual needs involves helping people travel to funerals in other states.
“I’ve given a number of people money to go to a funeral out of state, and then the only thing I ask is that they send me the obituary, so I know that’s where the money was spent.
“Another time, there was a veteran who wanted to go home to Washington State. We got him a bus ticket and gave him food, a phone, and money to get back to his family,” she says.
Although they’ve always been located in Shawnee, their aid isn’t reserved solely for Shawnee residents.
“Everything we do is available to anybody, so we’re not exclusive to Shawnee. And there isn’t an income qualification, either,” she says. “Our limits are to what is available, such as food. So the food boxes need to be reserved and picked up so we can be sure there is enough.”
While the free items inside the store are available daily to anyone—Terry says about 150 families come through each day— anyone wanting a food box must call and schedule an appointment (they currently serve about 97 households per week).
To further the organization’s mission to give away food, clothing, and shoes for free to anyone who walks in the door, volunteers staff the shop, work in the loading area and pantry, and pick up bread and
dessert donations daily from various bakeries that include HyVee, Price Chopper, Sprouts, Walmart, and Target.
Between those working inside the building and those picking up bread products, there are about 45 volunteers currently, but Terry says they always need more help. Volunteers work for two, four, and even six hours each week, depending on their availability. Terry says one woman volunteers daily and comes in about 40 hours each week. “She’s the exception,” she says, “as most volunteers come in a for a few hours once per week.”
The agency’s needs have increased since the COVID-19 pandemic began. While donations increased substantially in the early part of the pandemic, this year has seen a drop in donations. As a 501c3, Shawnee Community Services is primarily funded by individual donations— cash, food items, household goods for the kitchen and bath, and clothing are always in need (they no longer accept furniture donations).
“The current need is just to make it day to day and have enough to help the people who are coming in the door because one of the things you might have noticed is there’s quite a few shelves out there that are pretty empty. And so right now, that’s our bigger challenge: How do we take care of the people today? And then going forward, our ultimate goal is to continue with these new programs such as the fuel cards,” Terry says.
Like the pantry boxes, the fuel cards are distributed based on availability. “Again, there’s no application process—all anyone has to do is call me and ask if I have any. I’ve had to cut back though because I was giving out so much. Last month, we gave away $3,000 worth of $30 fuel cards, helping about 90 clients. This month I could only give away $1,900 because that’s the funds I had,” she says.
Just as Shawnee Community Services came through for Lori during her time of need, Terry says they’ll continue helping those with emergency needs. “We’re trying to keep our main vision alive— to try to help as many people as we can with as much as we can.”

Anyone who has ever spent any time in a school building knows teachers wear many hats. Not only are they educators, they’re nurses, referees, entertainers, and event planners— among many other roles. The teachers in the area are taking the concept to a whole new level through a unique collaboration between the local school districts and the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce.
The Teacher Immersion Program was born out of a conversation between Ann Smith-Tate, president and CEO of the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce and Shawnee Economic Development Council, and De Soto USD 232 superintendent Dr. Frank Harwood.
“We were just having a conversation about the workforce and helping students train for real life jobs as a learning experience in the classroom,” Smith-Tate says. “We proposed that we bring the teachers out of the classroom and into the businesses.”
The Shawnee Chamber of Commerce serves both the communities of De Soto and Shawnee. The program was piloted by high schools and middle schools within USD 232, with the Shawnee District joining in during the second year. Almost five years later, the program is still running strong in both districts.
The program allows for teachers to take field trips to local businesses. They then bring new information back from these experiences to their students, who apply the knowledge as they begin to make their way into the workforce.
“It can be tough to have 70 kids walk a small manufacturing floor,” Smith-Tate says. “This is a way for the teachers to go and have those conversations and then share that information with their students.”
Areas explored in the past include marketing, bioscience, manufacturing, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) careers, among others.
The school district plans the visits as professional development experiences, providing time, transportation, and meals, as well as taking care of all of the preparation with the local businesses.
Amy Niemann, IOM, programs manager with the Shawnee Economic Development Council, has directed the Teacher Immersion Program for the past four years. It’s Niemann’s role to oversee the program from beginning to end. She plans and determines the date with the school districts, finalizes topics, seeks out speakers and businesses to tour, sets the schedule, coordinates the meals, and executes the session on the day of the event.
The teachers have two annual opportunities to explore community businesses, typically hitting multiple locations in one day. The sessions are thematic in nature, perhaps exploring manufacturing during the fall session and marketing in the spring, for instance. Last year, the sessions focused on health care and bioscience, and teachers explored everything from nursing in a newborn intensive care unit to mortuary science.
According to Niemann, everyone involved hopes the experience will reverberate well past the singular field trip.
“Our Teacher Immersion Program allows for a connection between our educators and our businesses in a way that we hope extends past the one-day session. Our hope is that these participating educators will reach back out to the businesses when they have a student looking for an internship or are
shawnee chamber and economic development council team with school districts to allow teachers unique business learning experiences. story by Jackie Hostetler | photographs courtest Shawnee Chamber of Commercelooking for a real-world problem that their class can look to solve.” Niemann says.
Smith-Tate echoes the importance of building strong connections between students and local businesses and emphasizes how these relationships can benefit both parties.
“Teachers meet with business owners and ask the questions. What skills are you needing? Are you looking for certifications? Are you looking for degrees? What kind of things do our students need to be thinking about when they are heading off to college or trade schools? What soft skills are you looking for?” says Smith-Tate. “And we do hear again and again about the need for these soft skills.” (See the sidebar on page 32.)
By opening these lines of communication, students have a clear idea of what lies ahead, and businesses have the opportunity to define the qualities and skills they are looking for in potential employees.
In terms of “future employees,” Niemann recalls one such instance.
“For our fall 2019 session, our topic was manufacturing, and we had the opportunity to tour C&R Manufacturing Inc. During the session it was brought to our attention that one of the visiting teachers was a past teacher for one of the C&R Manufacturing employees. What a great reconnection to be made during the program,” Niemann says.
Aside from C&R Manufacturing, other businesses highlighted through the program include Bernstein-Rein Advertising, Schier
Products, SKC Communications, Hans Rudolph Inc., and Russell Stover Chocolate.
Most featured businesses are members of the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce. However, if an opportunity arises, the program is open to businesses from outside the chamber, such as the experience with Russell Stover Chocolate.
“With the visit to Russell Stover, the teachers looked at everything from start to finish with the relaunch of the new Russell Stover box: the creative, the finance piece, the project management. It was a great opportunity to bring it all back to the students in the classroom,” Smith-Tate says.
Niemann, too, sees the strong opportunities presented through the program.
“Providing the students, our future workforce, with the opportunity to be made aware of all the possibilities that lie before them in the work place, right here in their own backyard, is the biggest benefit of the project,” she says.
The opportunities are numerous indeed, as well as the benefits. Like so many other aspects of the education system, it truly takes a village, and this particular village consists of not only the school districts, but also the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce and businesses throughout the area. At the heart of it all are, of course, the teachers themselves. On top of all of those other traditional teacher hats, they can now add marketer, manufacturer, and chocolatier.
A group of teachers pose after a tour of Johnson County Community College. When you think about a possible career path, you likely think about the specific skills needed to be successful in that career. But there is more to it than just degrees, certifications, and trainings. It’s becoming increasingly important to employers that employees are proficient in a universal set of “soft skills.” These skills include things like critical thinking, problem solving, both written and oral communication, professional attitude, and work ethic. A strong grasp of soft skills ensure that employees can carry out the most basic functions of any job, such as being on time or clarifying expectations around a project. These skills may be “soft,” but they are just as important as anything you may learn in the college or trade school classroom.
As a longtime Shawnee business owner, I have the privilege to serve this year as your chairman of the board for the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce during our 76th year. These are exciting times in our community because Shawnee is a place on the move and is being noticed. And that’s because of the huge investments we have made in recent years to rebuild our infrastructure and enhance our quality of life.
Those investments are beginning to pay dividends for the entire business community. Just stroll through Downtown Shawnee on Saturday night and see the full parking lots and the thriving and evergrowing entertainment district. Or drive through our Valley of Champions and see sand volleyball, baseball, softball, basketball, soccer, volleyball, and even hockey being played by tournament participants from both coasts and all the way to the Gulf of Mexico, as we draw record-breaking numbers of visitors to stay in our hotels, dine in our restaurants, fill up at our convenience stores, or take in a movie at our megaplex theater.
It took giving a voice to vision to accomplish all this in the face of a lot of skeptics, and I am proud to say the chamber was that voice.
Your support of our chamber is much appreciated, and we are pleased to provide you with this resource guide as one of many tools designed to help build your business. Your membership comes with a host of benefits so please make sure you’re taking advantage of all that can benefit your business, and remember that any organization is only as good as the sum of its parts, so be a sum that makes a difference.
Chamber membership is an effective business strategy that has been making a difference in Shawnee for more than 75 years. The Shawnee Chamber of Commerce has a successful history of promoting the business interests of Shawnee and is the leading advocate for the growth and enhancement of our community.
Our members range from family-owned businesses to large national and international corporations. Chamber member representatives take an active role in our community, holding leadership positions within their companies and on the boards of community organizations.
Membership benefits are realized year-round and are designed to help businesses of all sizes grow and prosper. Immediate value is recognized with the chamber’s marketing tools and business connections. Member advantages include numerous opportunities such as advocacy, networking and referrals, access, promotions and sponsorships, online and print directories, education and resources, and much more.
In 2020, the Shawnee Chamber earned a 5-Star Accreditation from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, placing it in the top 2 percent of chambers in the U.S. The Shawnee Chamber is one of only two chambers in Kansas with this top-level accomplishment. This honor distinguishes the high quality, expertise, and strong leadership displayed by an accredited chamber.
The Shawnee Chamber of Commerce effectively promotes the business interests of Shawnee and is the leading advocate for the growth of enhancement of our community.
To develop and enhance our community through dynamic leadership.
