Favorite cover images (one from each season) from the past 15 years. SUMMER 2015
Do you recall what you were doing 15 years ago this autumn? That would be 2006, in many ways a different era from today. For us, the answer is relatively easy—we were busy creating the premiere issue of Topeka Magazine, a new editorial voice and look for the city. In the editor’s letter in that first edition, we promised that our publication would be dedicated to “people and events of Topeka, Kansas,” and that is a focus we have kept with consistency, integrity and a sense of style inspired by the Kansas capital and those who call it home. Now, we bring you this issue as a photographic celebration of the past 15 years. In it, we have gathered some of our favorite images, some featured in our pages and others taken in preparing our stories but not yet seen in print. These photos appear in four sections: Topeka Faces, Public Spaces, Private Places and (Mostly) Furry Friends, any of which could probably have been expanded to fill the entire publication. Looking over all the photographs has been bittersweet. They bring back memories of wonderful individuals—some who are no longer with us—and they recall events where we gathered, celebrated and looked forward to the future … to today. But the collection of photographs is not a eulogy; there are also timeless scenes and landscapes that remind us of the city that has been so much a part of our lives and is still there, growing, improving and waiting to be explored. Here’s to the coming years, to the future Topeka we will create and celebrate.

Guess who? Jason Dailey’s truncated cover portrait of Andy McKee emphasized how McKee’s groundbreaking acoustic work had become an overnight international sensation, even though (at the time) many fans knew little about the Topeka musician himself.
Nick Krug captures the confidence, swagger and competitive spirit of these Topeka youth basketball players. Poised in a dynamic formation and looming over the text and in front of the masthead, they are given the same treatment as any pro basketball star.

Topeka Faces T
opekans have been at the core of our stories for the past 15 years. In our photography archive, nearly fifty percent of the images are portraits, or some variation of that. Our photographers have followed ranchers, artists, piemakers, fitness gurus, midwives, musicians, firefighters and so many other people as they have gone about their daily routines or shared their hobbies with us, patiently explaining obscure aspects or why they find joy in what they do. We are grateful to those who have trusted us with their images and their stories so that we have been able to share them throughout the years and again in these pages.

Public Places W
hen we began Topeka Magazine in 2006, one of the first events I attended as editor was a citywide gathering where a prominent community leader praised Topeka by pointing out flaws in neighboring, rival river towns. Much has changed in Topeka in the past 15 years, but one of the greatest developments is the sense of community spirit and pride that has come from the development and greater awareness of community treasures, often public spaces and gatherings that all Topekans can enjoy. Some of these are showcase permanent attractions, but they can also be quiet, contemplative spaces of nature or annual celebrations and festivals. By caring for, being aware of, and improving the public spaces around us, we become a better community.

Private Spaces I
f you were alive and old enough to sit in front of a television during the 1980s, then you probably remember the show Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. If not, you are likely familiar with it—or the concept of it. The entire premise is to take viewers behind the fences of sprawling mansions, onboard yachts, and into gilded homes of ostentatious decoration. That’s not us. We’re more interested in sharing the story than glamorizing the bling. During our years of publication, we have been graciously invited into homes, gardens, studios and other private spaces across all the neighborhoods of the city. We’ve listened to and shared chronicles of renovations, landscaping, designs and other projects that have allowed people to live with more enjoyment, to surround themselves with their definition of comfort. These are a collection of images taken in those spaces, from shade gardens on a side yard to sitting rooms of valued real estate properties. All of them are lived in and real, and that’s the lifestyle we appreciate.

Friends W
e initially had not planned to include animals as a separate section of our anniversary issue, but in reviewing the stories and photographs from our past 59 editions, it was readily apparent that they play an important role in the lives of Topekans. Sometimes, animals are at the center of a story; in others they are simply at the periphery, watching and listening with curiosity. Of course, many of these are dogs and cats, but because Topeka is at the edge of the Western plains, horses appear almost as frequently. And then there are the others, no less cute or friendly: the lizards, the spider, the pigeons and at least one hippo.
