C
elebrating our 20th year in business tells the real “love story” here at Exposures International Gallery. After we returned from our almost 6-year world trip sailing the high seas on our yacht HAIG MATS, acronym for “Honesty And Integrity Got Me All This Stuff ”, our love grew even more so than we ever dreamed. Surviving the elements of the long distance ocean waters, pirates, storms, and sea creatures, we learned and embraced many lessons along the way. The idea of clean air and beauty is what attracted us to Sedona. So, together we held hands, bought a modestly small home on a hill, and relaxed on our front porch swing looking at the beautiful red rocks of Sedona. Exposures Gallery was born a year later . . . just like that! One of the major lessons we learned while sailing is that we all truly need each other in this life, a family of sorts, a team, someone we can love and also rely on. Imagine when we were in a storm: when Marty had to go into the ocean water in 50 foot waves to cut a tangled rope off the propeller, and I let the rope go sending him off to sea! Oops! Well, let me just say that in the heat of a moment, and when in a life threatening situation, the actions and nature of one’s true character and heart will definitely be revealed! :-) The point being, all people have value and worth, and when combined with the willingness to work hard and together along with honesty, integrity, and courage, then, we together, can make an impact of creating a greater good in this world. Exposures Family Was Born . . . Exposures International Gallery of Fine Art was created in 1996. Initially, we thought we would have just a small “Ma and Pa” art gallery. We started with 12 artists in a 1,400 square foot space. Now, we represent over 100 artists in 20,000 square feet of displayed art. EXPOSURES FAMILY WAS BORN Continued to page 74 . . . Barbara Westwood Being a part of this dream, of “Art and Soul” called Exposures, has ignited my creativity for 17 years. The beauty Diane and Marty have created reflects their love of art and artists. They have nurtured all of us with freedom to express our most important feelings. As I create a piece of art, Exposures is in my mind as part of it, making the end result a sum of it’s ART. I am grateful.
Bill Worrell I have been exposed…. at Exposures
International Gallery that is. What a wonderful and uplifting experience it has been. In 1997, I was invited to be represented by this fine gallery. The first year’s sales were astonishing; the next year’s sales were more astonishing. We have been astonished now for almost twenty years, and likely our astonishment will grow even more. I cannot begin to express the meaningfulness of our relationship with Marty and Diane Herman, owners of Exposures International Gallery. The entire staff is supreme. Visiting Exposures Gallery for my traditional annual show in October is always a highlight of my year. I am grateful for the extremely professional and competent elements of this wonderful gallery. I will be there again this October and hope that you will too. With me this year will be 10 additional, incredible artists. Come have munchies, a glass of wine, and view the beautiful artwork of many fine artisans. And, oh! I am so grateful that I was Exposed. Come and get Exposed too!
Susanne Vertel Dear Marty and Diane,
As you once again put together one of your wonderful catalogs showcasing your family of artists, I am reminded of how many years you have cared for and promoted the artists you represented. For the 20 years that I have known you and been fortunate enough to be represented by you, I have seen you build more than a successful business. With your discerning eye for style, trend and beauty, you have drawn to your doors some of the best artists and art in the country. With your keen sense of marketing and creativity, you have promoted your artists and shown their work in the best possible light, always evolving in the ways you have helped us sell our art. But more than anything, you have created a family within the gallery, a space where each artist feels special, where trust has been earned and is felt by all who interact with you. Being a part of Exposures Gallery is being an honored member of a team and a family that cares for the artist, the art and the collector. I am proud to be one of your long time artists.
Daniel Newman I have been represented by Exposures
International Gallery of Fine Art since it first opened 20 years ago. During all that time I have enjoyed an outstanding relationship. Over the years, I have shown my sculptures in many galleries, but none have ever been equal to Exposures. None have worked as hard to promote my sculpting career, or have been as successful in selling my sculptures. In short, I have been treated as family, and our relationship is not just business, but one of friendship and caring.

Bill Worrell

B
ill Worrell was born and reared in Texas. He earned a BA in sociology and English from Texas Tech University, and a MFA and ABD from the University of North Texas. He taught at Odessa College, the University of North Texas as a doctoral fellow, and Houston Baptist University comprising a total of 18 years. In 1979, he floated the Lower Pecos River where he encountered severe storms. Seeking shelter within a rock cave beside the river, his party observed paintings rendered over 4,000 years ago. This personal discovery forever changed the direction of Worrell’s artwork, which is now bronze and painted interpretations and impressions of ancient Lower Pecos River Rock Art. The Shumla Archaeological Research & Education Center gave Worrell the honor of naming this ancient site of his refuge, now known as Discovery Shelter, which is in the midst of a vast Lower Pecos River wilderness area. Worrell’s “The Maker of Peace” is a 20 foot tall bronze at Seminole Canyon State Park, in the heart of the ancient pictographs. His work ranges from this size to small, wearable jewelry pieces. Exposures International proudly displays the largest collection of Bill Worrell’s artwork worldwide. Worrell has been a member of Exposures International since shortly after its opening. The chronicle of Worrell’s art career is now available at Exposures, a book named Outside the Lines.

VISION FROM THE NIGHT FIRE Smoke White and joyfully it curled upwards Then fire Magic fire It grew brighter Illuminating the cozy rock shelter Shadows began dancing upon the stone walls The shaman saw his own So tall, so big He stretched his arms outward He saw himself as a giant When the sun rose next morning He gathered his tools Upon the rock shelter walls he painted his memory The vision from the night fire Worrell – 02/11/16 – 9:27 a.m. – New Art, Texas

KEEPER OF THE TREASURES So many things are illusive There are so many things for which mortals search That do not exist There are so many things that are only fantasies Within the chambers of men’s minds There are many things for which mortals search That are already within their possession Unrecognized While the hunt is on and the search is intense The treasures lie in the open Sun In the broad daylight Back at the camp Where they have been There are so many things So much finer than the limited lackluster illusions For which the unenlightened search Our minds are unclear and confused They are confused by fears of famine They are confused by greed If over the eons men had not agreed Gold is the most precious element No one would barter a pound of it For one single rainbow And if the conglomerate of social thought Which we call civilization Could utilize only one metal It would surely be iron in the form of steel Or perhaps aluminum Or titanium It would not be gold One drop of dew sparkling In the radiance of the morning Sun Is no less marvelous Than a cut and polished gemstone A sound mind Is preferable to the Seven Cities of Gold A sound body at any age Is preferable to a fountain of disabled youth A proper perspective Is the Promised Land Nirvana Paradise All about us All within us Are treasures at our grasp At our fingertips All about us Is a promised Light By which our minds can be illuminated All about us Are fields ripe with opportunities for enlightenment Fruits ready for the harvest With which we can feed our soul And attain inner peace Some do Some continue a search For non existing treasures Worrell—11/19/99—10:50 a.m.

Yuroz painter, sculptor
B
orn in Armenia in 1956, Yuroz began his formal art training at the age of 10. A gifted student, he excelled in his classes and eventually obtained a degree in Architecture. However, Soviet Armenia was not prepared to accommodate criticism of the government or artistic expression. After suffering through years of intellectual persecution, Yuroz immigrated to the United States to pursue his art career. Collectors love Yuroz’s cubist style – so reminiscent of Picasso – as well as his recurrent themes of love and companionship. The artist’s own hardships only serve to make him more appreciative of the tender moments shared between friends and lovers. Each element tells a part of the story, illuminating the nature of the relationship between the characters and what the future holds for them. Commissions available for sculpture only.

YUROZ ICONO COLLECTION It just seems natural for Yuroz to create the Yuroz Icono Collection after studying European, Byzantine and Russian iconography and the work of iconographers. “I was drawn to it and felt compelled to infuse my knowledge and skills with elements from that genre, morphing my work to a new magnitude while hopefully preserving my core message to continue to celebrate the human spirit,” says Yuroz. “Dance with the Pomegranates” honors the connection between a man and a woman and exemplifies the quintessence of their togetherness. With pomegranates in her hands, she offers power and her fertile strength. She dances almost in ecstasy under the music composed by his creative spirit. Seemingly in a state of trance, still with her eyes wide open, she connects her feminine delicacy to the tapestry of his dreams. He serenades his love, playing music of their connected souls. With love so strong, the guitar needs no strings, as he strums music discernible only by his lover. United in their thoughts, the man and woman yearn to taste the fruit of their passion from their perpetual cycle of love.

John Maisano bronze sculptor
J
ohn Maisano was born in Branford, Connecticut. Obtaining his Bachelors in Art from Southern Connecticut University, he went on to work as an exhibit designer at Yale University’s Peabody Museum of Natural History. Fascinated by the artistic designs found in Celtic, African, Inuit and Tribal art, he works to incorporate these designs into his sculptures. His classic contemporary style sculptures are regal and range in size from treasures that can fit into the palm of one’s hand, to larger-than-life monuments. His work focuses on graceful interpretations of animals shaped in a way that captures the life force of each animal and transforms it into something dynamic. Commissions available.

Kim Obrzut
bronze sculptor
N
ative American master artist Kim Obrzut first began sculpting her iconic Hopi maidens over twenty years ago, originally working in the traditional scrape-and-smooth method used by the Hopi potters for thousands of years. “I think back to my childhood with my grandfather,” Kim says, “he was persistent in quality and traditional accuracy. These beliefs still influence me today.” Employing her degree in Fine Arts from Northern Arizona University, Kim’s career soared alongside a body of work that seeks to preserve the traditions and culture of the Hopi. One of the first Hopi to successfully work in the fine art bronze medium, Kim seeks to reveal and honor the rich heritage of the Hopi and following her grandfather’s ways she creates art with love and precision. Her beautiful art can be found in collections world-wide. Commissions available.

Soho
fine art jeweler
C
eava Kats was born in Russia to two master jewelers. His family migrated to Texas where Ceava would study at the University of Texas and receive his bachelor’s degree in art history with a minor in business and marketing. After finishing his studies in Texas, Ceava traveled to Italy to study at the renowned Le Arte Orafe in Florence, ultimately accomplishing a Master’s in jewelry design. Following his studies in Italy, Ceava went on to become a certified Gemologist through the Gemological Institute. He transformed the age-old art of enamel-making, popularized by the craftsmen of Etruria in Italy between 950 and 300 B.C.E. Expanding upon the foundation of this ancient art, Ceava created pure, bright designs of contemporary sophistication incorporating the highest quality enamel, pave diamond detail, 18-karat gold and sterling silver. Many of his designs are graced with SOHO’s signature gold-leaf “foliage” technique. His creations are cherished the world over for their stylish appeal and design versatility. Commissions available.

B
orn in Kraków, Poland, Marietta was introduced to art at a young age by her grandfather, an art historian and poet. Her father defected to the United States when she was six. The move to Eugene, Oregon, presented young Marietta with a huge cultural change. What kept her happy was creating artwork. Marietta graduated from OHSU School of Dentistry and served as an officer in the U.S. Navy. In 1995, she moved to Bend, Oregon, and opened her own dental practice. Marietta found her “IT” in scratchboard art and continues to pursue excellence with passion. Her attention to detail, play of light, and ability to capture the soul of animals with their bright, expressive eyes is truly remarkable. She is an active Signature member of the International Society of Scratchboard Artists. Commissions available.

Lynn Demiurge mixed media painting on steel
A.
L
ynn Demiurge brushes steel canvases, transforming them to reflect highlighted prismatic depths of color. It can take him days, or even weeks to choose paints, patinas and other materials that are carefully selected to reflect the inner voice of that one piece of art before he ever begins to paint. Lynn is moved by the natural beauty and color found in nature. His love of the southwest and multiple travels to the Caribbean has inspired him to meld ocean movement with high desert color. The muse of nature transports new complexities within his steel canvases. It is this awe of color and light movement that continues to press Lynn to create new art pieces and keeps him in the studio. rent Lawrence is a second-generation metal sculptor. As a child, he was surrounded by nature, and it became a major influence in his art. Powerful images painted by cave dwellers 30,000 years ago are the biggest inspiration, as Brent also seeks to leave a legacy through his own artwork. He captures the ancient feeling and emotion of shamanistic images by using various techniques on steel that result in stone-like textures and tones. His artwork creates a spiritual fascination with the majestic wildlife forever preserved in metal, just like the ancient icons that inspired him. Brent integrates images of western wildlife into his current work with his son, Luke. Commissions available.

self-taught abstract painter from Brooklyn, Eric Lee’s work explodes with energy and color. His unique style leaves no boundaries for us all to feel the energy. “As my work evolves, I seek to explore that core concept – the effect of blending and transition from one color, form, and even material, to another. I suppose that in a broad sense, this is my world view as well – that the key to things working between people of various genders, religions, national origins, sexual preferences, and colors, lies in our ability to see the beauty inherent in each. That allows us to be who we are and our willingness to see the beauty in the subtlety is what connects us.” Commissions available.

Rebecca Tobey
Twenty years ago I met Marty and Diane Herman. I will never forget how beautiful Diane was, nor
what she was wearing – a wonderful white dress and jacket with frothy feathers around the neckline! They invited Gene and I to become a part of their gallery, which turned out to be as beautiful as Diane. We had to do a bit of gymnastics to make it happen because we were already with a Sedona gallery, but once we did, we never looked back. Exposures rapidly became our number one gallery and it is still my flagship gallery, carrying every piece Gene and I created, and every piece I have created since his death. It has been an exciting experience to be part of a gallery that not only represents us and sells the work well, but also is exceptional at displaying it. It is a joy for me to create a new body of work for the annual October show. This year is no exception. In celebration of their 20 years, I have spent several months creating a collection of 20 ceramic sculptures, each individual and unique. These 20 are “THE EXPOSURES 20” available only this one time. Once each of these 20 has sold, there will never be an “Exposures 20” available again. It is my way to honor Exposures Gallery – a gallery that is individual and unique. There will never be another one like it! Rebecca Tobey

John Maisano A s an artist, I have faced many challenges, but
fortunately not alone. I have learned that relationships are very important for my growth as a sculptor. I have met great artists and foundry artisans who have helped me along my path to finding my style – my voice. The most important business relationship is the one with my galleries, which become like family if you find the right ones. I remember the day I felt a surge of bravery (life is short!) and called the biggest and most renowned gallery I knew of… Exposures International. I spoke with Debbie, who immediately made me feel at ease and told me that Marty was just inquiring about my work after seeing an ad in Southwest Art. I was thrilled that they knew of my work and were interested in what I was creating. When I was able to visit the gallery in person, I immediately knew it was an amazing place! Sedona provides the perfect picturesque setting for this gallery, where some of the biggest names in Southwest art are so beautifully and thoughtfully displayed. I have been with Exposures International for three years, and still feel so honored to be a part of this family. Marty has offered kind words of encouragement and sage advice along the way, and his staff is equally supportive of my work and vision. I truly could not ask for more in a Gallery!
Kim Obrzut I still remember the first time I walked into the
Exposures Gallery. I’m sure like all others that walk in, I was stopped in my tracks and taken away with the friendliness, service and professionalism! As you walk in, you are greeted with friendly smiles, hugs and beverages! As you look up, you see so many beautiful colors and some of the most beautiful art you have ever seen. It is an experience! The relationship Exposures has with the artists is like family, and we are so blessed to have such a wonderful opportunity to have our art in one of the top galleries in the country!
Doug Adams T hey say timing is everything! I walked into
beautiful Exposures Gallery over 10 years ago for the first time; I was completely awestruck. The quality of the incredible artwork was so tastefully displayed throughout the gallery. At that time, I recognized a need to improve as an artist. I was showing and selling my work in small galleries throughout the southwest but dreamed of one day being part of the expansive Exposures. DREAM REALIZED! Just over 3 years ago, I contacted Marty and was invited to become part of the Exposures Gallery family! I couldn’t be happier with our relationship and wonderful professionalism of the staff. They make my job as an artist easy and enjoyable. My sales at Exposures have exceeded my expectations every year under the marketing expertise of Marty, Diane, Debbie and staff. I invite all my collectors to visit Sedona & Exposures International Gallery!
Yuroz H istorically, exposing art is one of the most effective
communication mediums that speak universally to many hearts. In cultivating the connection between art, the artist and the patrons, gallery owners hold an extraordinary place in molding the human society and shaping civilization by providing a special habitat, a special gallery like Diane and Marty created, for new ideas to germinate and grow. Diane and Marty are the nurturers in the eco system of the artistic community; building bridges, sewing seams and raising dams to channel the creative messages towards those in search of them, all in support of the arts. Diane and Marty are building and maintaining this important linkage in support of the arts. In my mind, artists are like preachers of their beliefs, galleries are akin to the temples and shrines, and gallery owners are ministers of the artists’ messages. ExposuresFineArt.com 117

W
olfgang Vaatz was born in Namibia and educated in Germany. Originally a painter and a sculptor, he loves to express his observations of the natural landscape and experiences into his artwork. This is still the major theme of his jewelry creations, either in miniature carved scenes; hammered and carved patterns; or compositions in abstract pieces. “Everything that is happening around me in nature is sparking a creative process. Like in my ‘Aspen’ pieces, the trees are carved naturalistically. Yet, to give a sense of real place, I wanted to capture the play of sunlight on the leaves, moved by the wind – which is hard to capture in a painting – but when I used individually shaped placer gold that is fused on the silver I succeeded. These gold nuggets reflect the light differently, which allows each piece to sparkle with the movement of the wearer, making the scene appear alive.” Commissions available. A.

Connie Frasca & Karen Halliday Thank you Marty and Diane Herman for the many years of artistic freedom you have given us!
Exposures Gallery will always be a large part of our personal Sedona journey. We created a piece titled “Sedona Journey” in 2008 as a tribute to the gallery. The sky represented extra cuts of ebony wood from numerous pieces that we created and sold at Exposures over a seven year period. Since we are “story-tellers in wood,” what better way to explain our relationship with Exposures? We thought the hundreds of small pieces were really something. Had we known eight years later that sales of our art would produce thousands more remnant pieces of wood, we would have used a bigger panel . . . like say the size of the universe! To understand the success of the gallery, all one has to do is walk through the front door and see the beautiful surroundings they have worked tirelessly to provide for all their artists. For many years we wondered why they would work so hard and take such a monumental gamble on the arts when they could have done anything. As far as we can figure it was Marty’s love for Diane, and her’s for him that gave them the perfect balance for such an undertaking. No matter how a person looks at it, the gallery was created from love. Where else are you greeted by staff with a warm hug and Caesar in his summer cut? It is very difficult to find words that haven’t already been said by collectors, staff, and artists as they have touched so many lives. We have heard collectors speak of Marty and Diane and were taken not by what they said but how they said it. The tender tone sounded as if they were speaking about a friend or loved one, and they were. Marty’s marketing genius and Diane’s instinctive eye made it all possible for many artists. Both being artists and promoting other artists with such grace is the epitome of an artist’s artist. Exposures is not a place to us, it’s an essence, like a heartbeat, a gathering place of old souls. The peaceful intensity of the gallery is truly “magical” and cannot be defined. Our best guess is that the “magic” is Marty and Diane’s love for each other. From the warmest part of our hearts, Connie Frasca and Karen Halliday (artists introduced by Bill Worrell 2001)
