Why Hot Summer Is Dangerous For Your Children And How To Manage It

Hot summer has already appeared. With time the weather will be hotter and more humid. Though summer means a fun time with lots of outdoor activities, it can be dangerous for all. Our bodies create a lot of heat in summer but they get cooled through sweating and by radiating heat through the skin. But in unusually high temperatures and high humidity vigorous exercises can cause our body’s natural cooling system to fail and being trapped inside the body the internal heat reaches a dangerous level. Babies and young children particularly are at a high risk of heatrelated illness. According to a daycare caregiver, young children always bubble with energy and it is very tough to let them sit in one place. Besides, they have a natural apathy to drink water. All these combinations make summer a dangerous time for children especially when the temperature sores abnormally.

A pediatric in a daycare in Pasadena, CA, opines that parents must take adequate care of their children so that they do not suffer from common heat ailments like heat cramps, heat exhaustion, or heatstroke. Heat exhaustion is one of the most common occurrences among children in hot weather. It can overheat the body and can cause an excessive amount of sweating, dehydration, rapid pulse, and other chemical imbalance. This heat exhaustion can take a serious look like heat stroke if it is not cared for at the first stage. As soon as the heat exhaustion is noticed, kids should be taken into a cool shady place. Remove the child’s excess clothing. Electrolytes level fell due to excessive sweating so offer him a glass of fluids contains salt and sugar in the right amount.

Heatstroke is a life-threatening medical emergency and the most severe form of heat illness. When it happens the body cannot regulate the temperature and body temperature can soar to 106 degree Fahrenheit. It can damage the child’s brain or may cause death if prompt care is not taken. Emergency medical help is needed and before getting that, the first thing that a parent or a school authority should do is pouring cold water all over the child’s body, especially on the head to bring the temperature down quickly. Keep sponging his body with cold water till you reach the doctor’s chamber. Heat cramps are a common summer problem among children. It is painful muscle problems in the legs, arms, or belly that can happen after the body lose salt and fluids through extreme sweating. Children are prone to this problem because they always want to remain in physical activity.

Apart from these problems fatigue, dizziness, fainting, headache, nausea, vomiting, fever, and diarrhea are common summer problems that we notice in children. Parents, as well as daycare caregivers, should supervise that their children drink plenty of water, fluids, and homemade drinks to maintain the balance of fluid, salt, and sugar. Encourage them to take bath at least twice daily to keep the body cool. Keep them busy with productive works indoors when the temperature is abnormally high outside. There are various excellent pediatrics in Pasadena, CA, you may consult them if needed.
