The traditional curtain wall glass façade has a low insulation level and leaves the offices overheated by the direct sunlight. This results in excessive energy consumption for air conditioning as well as the need for heavy glass coating that makes the view seem permanently dull and grey.

By folding the façade in an origami like structure we achieve a structure with closed and open parts. The closed parts are providing a high-insulation façade, while blocking the direct sunlight. On the outside the closed parts are fitted with solar thermal heat panels that are powering the air conditioning and providing dehumidification for the working spaces.

The folded wall provides a free view through clear glass in one direction, and creates condition of plenty of diffused daylight by reflecting the direct sun between the interior panels.

Even when the sun comes directly from east or west, the main part of the solar rays are reflected off the glass due to the flat angle on the window. The reflected rays increases the efficiency of the solar thermal energy panels. The solar panels will reduce the building energy consumption with more than 60%.

[3 interwoven networks] Black network The black network is an efficient layout of streets providing an intuitive and rational circulation between urban blocks of various sizes. The network of streets is plugged into the neighboring arteries and merges seamlessly with the existing city fabric. Blue network The blue network extends from the bay deep into the site, expanding the waterfront quality to include the whole urban development. In some places the blue network inflates to become a lake or a blue plaza. The sides of the blue network are designed for promenades, bicycles, restaurants and shops that create a lively soft street-scape for different people and transportations. Green network The green network extends from the green hills towards the waterfront. As the canals decrease in size the parks inflate and vice versa, creating a gradual transition from a water city to the park city. The green network is characterized by continuous canyons that weave over the canals and under the bridges of the streets above. At times street and park change places creating a sequence of undulating hills. Public institutions and facilities are concentrated adjacent to the green network.

[Introduction] ShenZhen, located immediately in the north of Hong Kong, is the earliest of the five special economic zones in China. A sleepy fishing village 30 years ago, ShenZhen’s “Open Door” policy has brought herself reputedly one of the fastest growing cities in the world. Today, the city’s skyline is dominated by skyscrapers that co-exist with “villages within city”; the Shenzhen people, while proud of their economic achievements, also long for a sense of identity that goes beyond financial awards. [Nomad City] ShenZhen is a city of migrant and temporary residents; demography notes the population grows from 60,000 to 13,000,000 in the past 30 years. “Nomad City” attempts to capture the urban phenomenon of growing migrations and increasing mobility in ShenZhen city. It aims to create a multiple cultural phenomena by both generating different activities and creating a flexible housing prototype for migrants in the city.

By re-manipulating programs and activities, we try to create different events in order to stimulate interactivities between different groups and generations. The idea of creating a new nomadic life style will help eliminate the gap and estrangement among migrations and will emphasize on the characteristics of hybrid and flexible urban conditions of ShenZhen city.

A Collective Lifes

How do we memorize and describe a place where we live? A city of harbor, a city of mountain, a city of forest……, or, a city of vehicles and massive buildings… A city together with it very nature creates our impression of a “place”. A place is where we live with the nature; a place is where we have our everyday life with the nature. A place is where we decide to make good use the nature and to grow up with the nature, or more precisely—a place where we grow by reinforcing its very nature.

Our new town is a collection of various strips build based on its original nature—the farmland. It is a self-sufficient community that creates balance between consuming and production. It is a scattered city—a non-centralized, non-preconceived plane that embed in its original landscape. The collection of strips formulates a pattern that includes natural and artificial elements supporting everyday life of the inhabitants; it creates a coherent landscape that allows the town to grow with its nature. Various strips are used to support the “everyday life” of the town: Wooden walkways are paved in various height to provide different views among strip cubes; algae bioreactors produces bio-fuel for generating energy to the inhabitants; gardens of houses behind wooden fences; vertical living walls used for flower planting and local food production; cubes of different species of vegetation; rice, wheat and corn field; forest, bushes and grassland; wetlands and ponds.

Coherent Nature Community beyond Place, Civic Sense beyond Architecture Team: S.M.Lee (Concept, text, Animation) + W.Y.Liu (Animation) Venice Biennale Competition, 2008

[ Keyword] locus, memory, place, virtual/actual, nature, identity

The strips can be converted into different uses in order to satisfy the energy balance between consumption and production. For example: when part of the housing is changed to commercial use (which suggests a higher power consumption than food consumption) , strips that are used for crops and vegetations around the old town can be changed for algae farmland to create more bio-fuel. The whole town can be seen as a self-supported system to create balance between consumption and production in the aspect of food, energy, daily supplies, public spaces, living spaces, green spaces, and etc. Width and size of the strips are different according to their locations in correspond to the building of infrastructure. For example: compared with strips in the non-residential field, strips around the residential area are thinner and denser to provide stronger intensity for human activities. To the contrary, fields near Highway 1 and the Beltway around Megalopolis, where there are fast vehicles and heavy traffic, are filled with more natural and uncultivated vegetations with bigger strips. In the neighborhoods where people stop by for activities by bikes or slower cars, strips are more public-oriented and have richer characters. In the residential areas, strips are more natural again but in human scales. When people are walking around the strips, a sequence of experiences combined with different sensations emerges: viewing the changing scenes, feeling the wind, hearing the flowing water, smelling the scents of different vegetations, and touching the diverse textures of sequent strip volumes—the unique spatial and perceptional experience gives the 'hometown' its personal memory and identity; a coherent landscape in strips embedded endlessly in the farmlands will create a new “everyday life” different from the megalopolis.

[Introduction] EveryVille, a given condition by the exhibition curator Aaron Betsky, is a new exurban community built on flat, claybased soil, adjunct to a growing metropolitan. Resistant of being merged by the metropolitan, EveryVille is looking for an image, a coherence, a character and a civic sense for this small town, appropriate to its location and to its history, its site and its future.

Rotterdam Mediterranean Airport Advisor: Siebe Bakker TU Delft, core studio 01, 2006

[ Keyword] scenario, s.w.o.t., s.t.e.e.p., niche market [Introduction] The September 11 attacks in 2001 brought several significant challenges to the most airports in the world. Rotterdam airport, like many other business oriented airports, is forced to enhance his security level which results in longer checking hour in the airport. Consequently, many business travelers start to lose their interest in flying from the business airport, rather than choosing other airports close to their working city. Meanwhile, environmental issues such as noise, vibration and the needs of housing demands all call the airport to reconsider the future of the Rotterdam airport.

scenario: a mediterranean airport

[Rotterdam Mediterranean Airport] Provided the airport has to double its traveling passengers by 2010, our research starts from evaluating the internal and external driving forces by using SWOT and STEEP analysis methods in order to build different possible scenarios to envision the airport’s future. In the end of the research, each student has to propose one scenario based on the result of analysis. The outcome therefore can be a cutting-edge proposal or a totally utopian, yet rational and convincing. RMA tends to attract passengers by targeting a specific niche market—the Mediterranean holiday travelers—by providing a unique experience in the airport. The project presents an effective solution to increase the efficiency in the airport by taking the advantage of the habit of holiday travelers and utilizing information technique to save checking hours. RMA also introduces several unique amenities in order to create “Mediterranean Experience” which allows your journey to start immediately after you arrive at the airport!

[Introduction] The Palace of Justice with twenty-six courtrooms challenges the question to how such a large building could refer distinctly to the old city of Cordoba and its unique history without literally imitating it.

[Integration] The building layout is created with a strategy of integration through fragmentation; a city within a city is created by taking sections from the street plans of the old city. The sections ciudad de la justicia indicate the composition of the old city, and within which thecórdoba mecanoo architecten_ayesa required quality and spatial characteristics are embedded: the traditional patios full of flower pots and plants and sometimes a fountain are placed centrally and provide light and ventilation in adjacent rooms. The patios in the Palace of Justice will provide the same quality like the old Cordoba city. ciudad de la justicia córdoba mecanoo architecten_ayesa

[Facade] The exterior of the Palace refers to the traditional architecture of Córdoba with its perforated facades. A gossamer-thin pattern reminiscent of lace filters the light and absorbs heat. The filigree gives the building an elegant appearance. Applied to the facades of the patios are ceramic panels in different colors which contrast with the other facades.

The partially grass and plant covered roof creates natural and efficient building cooling in the subtropical climate. The large roof also provides an informal public space where the city residents can stroll, practice Tai Chi, mediate or just relax. Inspired by old Greek theatre, an open-air theatre was designed on the roof complex at the point where the roof dips to the ground. The surrounding park in turn becomes an informal stage. Merge The surrounding park with light slopes, valleys and water pools creates intimate public spaces varying in size, scale and proportion. Meandering paths lead to a botanical garden, a bamboo grove, a playground, a tea pavilion and a butterfly garden. The park design is a logical continuation of the theater complex with its public open spaces and roofscape. Building and landscape merge naturally, forming a unified whole.

porosity, continuiation, merge, sustainable, [Introduction] The major concept of the Kaohsiung Performance Art Center is the existing Banyan trees, which are specially preserved because of their historical and environmental values. The big open roof of the building that symbolized the crown of the banyan trees is 200 meter-wide and 160 meter-deep. The big open roof covers all the public and private space, including the passageways and performance space…etc, and it leaves many “in-between” space that facilitates the porosity of the building where interior and exterior start to blur.

CNL Czech National Library Advisor: Sophie Valla TU Delft, core studio 02, 2007

[Introduction] The function of library changes by time. A library, in a more traditional sense, is a collection of books, or it can mean the building or room where houses such a collection. Nowadays, a library is not only a place for storage, but also a public space where people meet and exchange. Meanwhile, the development of digital information and media also makes today’s libraries become more diverse and more accessible to the public. [Czech National Library] In order to accommodate all activities that acquire different working conditions, all programs in the library are re-categorized and thereafter being distributed according to three qualities: accessibility, flexibility and interactivity. These qualities are further applied to the libraries’ spatial organization to provide various environments for working. The service area, together with the vertical circulation space in the library, is consequently merged as a continuous space for public use therefore to provide non-interrupted experience in the library.

Re-Search Bouwkunde for Collective Experience Team: SunMing Lee, Ryan Liang TU-Delft, BK Competition, 2008

[ Keyword] collective experience, clusters, program, activities

[Introduction] The previous vertical BK tower that comprises fourteen floors is always been criticized for its horizontal separation of spaces that fails to build connections among students. Our proposal sees the fact and tries to challenge the way people perceive space by two means. Firstly, by reorganizing programs into different clusters, students with similar interests will have more opportunity to interact with each other, while space can still keep its flexibility in use. Secondly, by introducing catalytic activities to public space, such as “Interbreeding Field” for construction exercise, “Collective Courtyard” for communication and “Experience Spectrum” for lectures and exhibitions, the faculty will be no longer a place for “study”, but a place to meet people and experience architecture.

[Introduction] The design of Quebec national Museum explores the freedom that lies within the conflict and dilemma between the two extremes: the confined and the liberated; the ancient and the future. To respond to the multiple demands and desires of the historical, urban and functional context, the volume of the museum is tilted, wanting to create an intuitive connection between street and museum as well as church courtyard and park. The new pavilion is designed to complete the convent, preserve the centenary trees while opening both courtyard and museum visually towards the park. The tilted volume encloses the courtyard while opening up to the park. The simple form and choice of materials reflect a local sensibility, while the gesture of diving under the street transforms the simple stack of galleries into an abstract sculpture.

Recycle Diagram: working flow and mechanism of classification

Loft: spatial variation based on programmatic “key-frames “.

[Introduction] The project aims to recover the relationship between humanity and machinery. This recovery should also provide new uses and possibilities for development of the site as a powerful magnet for local residents and urban activity. The project starts from the possibility of generating organization from a waste processing circulation, as a development of the idea of hybridization between machinery and human activities. The process diagram is later on spatialized into architectural space via model study and computer manipulation. The outcome of the project presents a shift of emphasis from the form to the structural and organizational relations, interconnections that exist internally and externally within an architectural project. Design Process: spatialization of recycle process diagram

[ Spatial Organization ] The formal organization of the project is determined by the economies of the working flow, which is a sequential linear process on the site. The primary organizing strategy is to spatialize the continuous working flows that constitute the major working spaces in the factory. Other Programs and activities are then automatically filled-in in the “in-between space in order to create spatial qualities and complexities. My First move is to set the circulation diagram as a structural organization: The connection between the circulation paths is always set as a bifurcation, so that rather than setting the program as a series of adjacent spaces with more or less determined limits, I articulate them in the continuity of a branched sequence along the circulatory system. [ Three trajectories ] flow of recyclable material, flow of staff, and flow of visitor The flow of recyclable material, which is linear, sequential and continuous, plays the most significant rule in the factory. Commingled materials are gradually differentiated during the sorting process. They will be later on collected and packaged by the baling machines. Flow of staff in the factory acquires high efficiency and high visibility. They are set diagonally across the recyrecy clable flows. Finally, the visitors flow is eventually introduced in the system. It is a non-directional continuous loop scattered in between the other two trajectories.

Service/ Office Level

[Conclution] The close integration between human and machinery is facilitated by the overall transparency of the internal organization; the continuity of spaces avoids the traditional separation into status group that is no longer conducive to a modern workplace. The architecture we are developing today is no longer the architecture of repetition and pre-conceived forms. Rather, it is an organic architecture that is able to adapt and mould itself to the peculiarities of its performance, to orient itself to the various functions and to synthesize a complex series of concerns into a seamless and integrated whole.
