Last week, we talked about rethinking building codes and building regulations postpandemic. To summarize it, in my opinion, I talked about there are pro and cons about individual working space, the pros are increasing in work efficiency, lower risk of getting COVID-19 and many more. On the other hand, the cons are, high cost, space wastage, high maintenance and more. Working from home is a good solution for this pandemic in my opinion, it not only saves time and money. It also increases work efficiency too. The global pandemic makes us to rethink and change our working schedule but it can be see as one of the process of evolution

Summary Last forum we all talked about passive and active fire systems and also mention about features inside the building that can help to contain and prevent fire. So, in my opinion, I think both active fire and passive fire are as important as both play an important key role to protect the buildings, equipment and most importantly lives. Although the systems work independently, but both systems need to be functioning properly to suppress and stop a fire, passive fire is about containing the fire while active is about stopping the fire. In general, there are few different categories of active fire protection and that is, detection, suppression and ventilation. Detection usually using sensors that detect heat, smoke or flames and send the signal alarm throughout the building. Suppression is about taking out the fire manually like fire extinguishers or automatically with indirect or direct release systems. Ventilation is about keeping the routes smoke free with fire resistant fans. On the other hand, passive fire prevents the spread of fire by using the fire proof materials for the walls and floors. It utilizes fire doors to help further compartmentalize the structure and dampers to prevent the spread of fire and smoke throughout the ducts of the building. In a nutshell, I think that both active and passive fire are equally important and should not ignore one another and should be working together in unison.

Last week, we talked about construction preliminaries and it appears in tender documents. People usually confused between preliminaries and preambles as they both appear in tender documents, but they are considered two different things. Construction preliminaries usually vary from one project to another but they will include the financials of the project, necessary details outlay regarding subcontracting and seeking approvals for building permits, equipment leases and other items. Preliminaries also provide a description of a project that allows a contractor to assess costs which, whilst they do not form a part of any package of works, are required by the method and circumstances of the works. They might, for example, describe things such as subcontracting, approvals, testing and completion procedures. Preliminaries can be used to provide crucial details regarding testing measures as well as achievement of construction project’s goals, so the purpose of preliminaries is to describe works as a whole, and to specify general conditions and requirements for their execution. For example, pre-construction information is included in one of the lists for preliminaries as it is important for the designers and contractors. The information included, the project, planning and management of the project, health and safety hazards, including design and construction hazards and how they will be addressed and information in any existing health and safety file. It should be prepared early in the project so that it can provided to designers and contractors as part of the tendering or procurement process. This enables those preparing bids to assess the resources they will need to allocate to perform their duties under the regulations.

Professional Development Week (PDW) Summary

I was really lucky to be given a chance in participating the Professional Development Week through the help of Taylor’s University lakeside campus during this pandemic. The talks conducted let me learned a lot and let me prepare for my future career from the experts in the field. Below are the workshops/talks that I attended: Samsung: “Recruiter’s Insight” StashAway: “Financial Literacy for Fresh Graduates” AIRASIA: “Survive your First 30days (… and Beyond)” McDonalds: “Careers in Brand Management” Veritas: “Best Practices in Portfolio Preparation (Architectural Design) and Job Interviews” R&D STUDIO: “Best Practices, Challenges and Career Opportunities in the Creative Design Industry” Through this talk made me to open my eyes and learn from those who are leading the market in Malaysia in each of their perspective fields. Popular brands like Samsung, AIRASIA, McDonalds had also proved me a lot of knowledge on how to deal with their own crisis and overcome them during this global pandemic. As a final year graduate student, especially of the COVID-19 situation, it had made me worried about getting jobs, earning money and many other aspects as surviving in the society. As there are real life examples that some of my friends that graduate some time ago are still struggling finding jobs. Luckily that I attended the talks and activities of PDW that I was able to ease some of my worries down and have confidence in the future. In a nutshell, this opportunity had made me to get a better head start and prepare more thoroughly before stepping into the working field. I would also like to thank that Taylor’s University that gave out such a precious chance to me and my course mates and hope that this PDW can also be provided for other future graduating students. I am grateful to all the talkers that participated and the lecturers for all their hard work and it helped me a lot.
