CAMPUS RESEARCH

GLOBAL CAMPUS HUB You are invited to design a building to house an International Institute at the University at Buffalo. The building will bring together global research, international programs and overseas studies to provide a new educational hub and cultural focus on UB’s South Campus. UB’s International Institute will house UB International Programs, the Asian Studies Center, Transnational Studies Center and Confucius Institute. This new Institute located on South Campus will serve students, faculty, researchers, staff, communities in the city and international visitors. Direct access to public transport will provide connections to UB’s Downtown Medical campus, bus and rail stations and Buffalo Niagara International Airport. This location, close to Main Street, will enable people from the local community and the city to have access to UB’s global research hubs, a wide range of educational and cultural programs and global community activities sponsored by UB..

CAMPUS MUSIC

The Campus Music project began with an ambitious attempt to form a glamourize pavilion. A set design for a classical performance that also focused on the audience and their role in the show. The design then evolved to form its own performanc. Both music and architecture does begin with an idea, a concept. Rhythm in architecture is the repetitive use of groups of visual elements, many times or atleastthree times, to establish a recognizable pattern. This project uses rhythm in architecture to resonate with its function. The aim is to form a pavilion but also analyse how it can be more to the university when the music stops.

Resonating with Koi fish’s movement in water is symbolically represented in the form of the research hub. Wood bracings show movement of the fish in the water. Koi fish are associated with positive imagery. Because of the dragon legend, they are known as symbols of strength and perseverence, as seen in their determinative struggle upstream. And beecause the lone Koi that made it to the top of the waterfall, they are also known as symbols of destiny fullfilled.
