Paragraph composition: Value
Value is an element that can indicate depth and space. This idea was studied with the gray square compositions in Visual Communication 1 by varying the contrast from highest to lowest and imply moving back through space. I discovered an example of this principle on a trip to Egypt while exploring the Pyramids at Giza. Photographs of their positions demonstrate the depth through value, as the closest pyramid appears to have the greatest contrast. This study will conclude with a halftone representation of my pyramid photos showing depth.
First, I wrote a paragraph about value indicating depth. Next, I practiced typesetting with typefaces, tracking, kerning, leading, and rag.

Type sketches
Here are preliminary layout sketches of my calendar. I chose to set it in my birth month and year, April 1986. I chose french because it was more beautiful than “Paper Bag.
Calendar
52
Verb sketches
The calendar was to express a verb typographically. My study was of the natural decomposition of a paper bag when buried in the ground. Here are sketches of developing the verb expression.
53
Once I chose a direction, this is my process. Starting very light,I gradually moved to darker values of brown. Segmenting and deleting the numbers gradually symbolize the breaking down of the paper bag throughout the month until it is completely gone.

Web layout sketches
As a web design novice, I found HTML and CSS extremely hard to grasp in the beginning. To start designing our project website for the year, we first typeset the information and designed it by cutting paper and arranging it. these are the sketches.

Static sketches
This was the first exercise in our first Visual Communication studio. Here are static compositions made with cut aper and tape.
Dynamic sketches
Sketches of dynamic compositions. Unlike static, these compositions show movement, direction, and are active.
Composition Studies: Static / Dynamic
60
Static translations
Here are the Adobe Illustrator translations. The black squares are 5 cm.The boards are 25x25 cm.
Dynamic translations
The squares are 1mm apart to create tension. The diagonal direction leads the eye creating an active composition.
61
Depth sketches
Made with Coloraid grey tones, these squares show depth through value.
Scale sketches
Experimenting with scale, different size squares were placed to indicate relative scale to one another.
Composition Studies: Defining Space
62
Depth compositions
This was the inspiration for the Paragraph Project in which I wrote about value creating depth. The distance of the squares from one another reflects their depth through value.

Tension: one, two, three dot sketches
Tension is created by placing the red dot where edges of the squares extend and focus the eye at their invisible intersection point. This was done with one, two, and three red dots.

Fibonacci sketches
By definition, the first two numbers in the Fibonacci sequence are 0 and 1, and each subsequent number is the sum of the previous two.
Composition Studies: Fibonacci
66
Here are sketches illustrating this formula, with varying compositions to explore space and incremental positioning for the most active layouts.

67
Dot plane compositions
After cutting out black and paper dots, planes were created layer by layer. each layer bridged the previous until a complex pile of planes was created.
Composition Studies: Planes

Color plane compositions
Following the previous triangular plane shape, the same exercise was done by picking a base color and a top color. Each plane blends up to meet the top color creating rich depth.

Matching, Texture
78

Right: aluminum foil and a brownie
Left: black currants and black pearls
Right: cracked earth and chipped paint
79
Symbol matching
For these matches, we had to choose letters, numbers, or symbols to match.

Left: a tuxedo button and a period
Right: Peter Anderelli’s jacket buttons and a semicolon
Left: a barn door and the letter M
Right: a screw head and a plus sign

Line Continuation has the greatest “wow factor, I feel. It was extremely difficult to match up forms and lighting patterns to make the continuation look as real as possible.

Next, I organized the hierarchy of information into web architecture with my focus on the area of the zoo’s conservation efforts. Specifically, Operation: Oryx, The Phoenix Zoo’s most successful conservation effort to date.

Perfect bound book binding
I made approximately 20 soft cover perfect bound and single leaf books. I really enjoyed learning these techniques and the process of book binding.

I chose a more neutral background color after feeling like the purple was too noisy. The pops of color are not quite balancced here.

Here are my final book binding instrucctions. I opted to switch to a flat perspective for enhanced clarity and more subdued colors.

Haiku, one day project

This was a one-day project to introduce us to symbolic, iconic, and indexical representations.
Working from a series of tuna haiku poems by J. Salembier, these buttons show the same theme as symbolic, iconic, and indexical.

Scales, A Collection Of Tuna Haikus
J. Salembier is a poet and cancer survivor who composed these haiku to document his battle with cancer, undergoing treatment, and recovery. All 19 haiku are about tuna fish and reflect his experiences.
J. Salembier
I had many different ideas about how to represent these haiku. Above is a typographical approach while below is a symbolic photographic sketch.

Mobile museum exhibit
3D model
My team had two industrial designers, one architect, one landscape architect, and myself as the graphic designer. To innovate the Arizona Museum for Youth (AMY) we designed a mobile museum unit to travel to the valley’s schools and introduce students to the current exhibit.

Poster
Introducing AMY 2.0’s new mobile, adaptive, and interactive museum exhibit. Exterior
This poster and model were our deliverables for the preliminary judging. We were selected as one of seven finalists out of 35 teams.
Our group’s number one focus was getting AMY 2.0 more exposure. We loved the mission of the museum and realized that the most pressing area to innovate was our community’s awareness of all that AMY has to offer Arizona’s children. What better way to spread the magic of AMY 2.0 than to take it directly from school to school?
We customized a 53’ semi trailer to create The Imagination Station. Our mobile Imagination Station allows every student to play, learn, and interact with AMY’s current exhibit subject and will make AMY 2.0 the exciting topic of conversation at every dinner table.

This bi-level trailer build out features a spacious layout with three work tables for activities related to AMY 2.0’s current exhibit. Flat screen monitors allow relevant material to be played and ipads facilitate interaction. Children love our unique display wall where their work hangs proudly.
: 1/4” = 1’=0”
The space is designed to allow students to not only experience a sample of AMY’s current exhibit, but allow teachers to relate relevant curriculum points to AMY’s exhibit, culminating in a field trip to AMY and enhanced family visitation.
Results There are 223 elementary schools in the Phoenix metro area. With a total of 136,667 kids in attendance of grades K-5, we view a huge potential to reach new patrons and future donors to AMY 2.0.
136,667 Kids to reach with I.S.
If only 10% (13,667) of children decide to go ONCE to the museum after visiting Imagination Station at an attendance cost of $5.00 a head, the museum would generate a staggering $68,333.50.

The Easy Feeder
This is another contest we entered as a class. The challenge was to make a packaging innovation for elderly people. I had many ideas, but one morning as I hoisted up a brand new bag of dog food to feed Wednesday, my min pin, I realized how heavy and cumbersome pet food can be.
My solution was to make a counter-top sitting box of pet food that needed no lifting or manuevering. A pull slide at the bottom releases the food effortlessly into your pet’s bowl without The physical strain of lifting the bag and trying to accurately pour. The Easy Feeder is the answer to hassle-free pet feeding for the elderly.

Tshirt
After interviewing volunteers, it seemed like word of mouth was the main way they find their volunteer position. This tshirt will be a great promoter for MIHS Volunteers.
Folder
When new volunteers go through orientation, they recieve lots of paperwork. This is our design for the take home folder and volunteer information.

Volunteer leave-behind pamphlet
Our campaign tag line was “We came for different reasons, we stay for the same. After interviewing volunteers at MIHS, we realized they all started for various reasons, but they all said that the sense of family and community they felt while working there was why they stayed. This slide out pamphlet shares that message while informing the viewer of all the great reasons why they should volunteer with MIHS.
