Ever since my childhood, travel has been in my blood. Weekends at Lake Kariba or Victoria Falls were common place, while longer holidays were spent in Cape Town, Malawi, Namibia or Mozambique. Once I headed off on my big OE, I never fully returned to my African roots. Instead, I’ve traversed the continents, living, working and playing in many a foreign land. And of all the places I’ve visited, I chose to make London my home. As we know, each journey starts with just one small footstep, a small seed sown by an image spotted in a magazine, a snippet overheard at the water cooler, or a long-held dream reaching fruition. Our journey began, as many others surely have done, over a glass or two of good wine on a long summer’s evening. By the end of the night we had a vision – to publish the best travel magazine in London; to portray as much of our beautiful region as possible; and to showcase that beauty not only to UK readers, but well beyond these shores. Not only do we want you to discover what’s in your own backyard, but we’re intent on telling the world all about our special spot in Godzone. This first issue of World Travel Luxury magazine morphed from that original conversation into what was held in the hands of our readers 12 years ago. We’ve collated some great stories from our own collections, as well as those from a handful of writers who’s work we have enjoyed reading in the past. The World Travel Luxury team are all avid travelers and luxury lovers. Between us, we have many and varied stories to tell and, over time, we’ll share some of them with you.

HOTELS | ROYAL MARINE HOTEL The Hotel Adlon owes its name to its original owner, Lorenz Adlon, a native of Mainz and a Berlin restaurant manager of good repute. Adlon invested 20 million gold marks and two years into the creation of the hotel, which opened on 23 October, 1907. Lorenz Adlon’s vision was to create the most opulent hotel in the world, setting standards previously unseen in the hotel industry. Guests were amazed by the sophistication and comfort: facilities included hot and cold running water, gas and electricity and a refrigeration and cooling system linked into a fountain. There was even a power plant which provided electricity to the 110-volt light bulbs produced specially for the hotel. Shortly after opening, Adlon’s vision was realized when the Hotel Adlon was acknowledged to be ‘one of the most beautiful hotels in the world’. Its architecture, interior design and advanced technology were praised across the globe. The Adlon’s first guest and most loyal patron was the Emperor Wilhelm II. He demanded no one put a foot in the hotel before him and treated the hotel as one of his palaces. He paid an annual retainer to the equivalent of €75,000 to guarantee rooms for his personal guests as required. If his bill exceeded this amount, he made up the difference, but if the sum was unused the hotel made a hefty profit. Everything about the Adlon delighted the Emperor and there was hardly anything that he did not want to have in his palace. He was particularly impressed by the beautiful marble and, when told that the palace marble was just as nice, replied: “but mine is not as shiny and nicely polished”. The superior technology of the hotel also fascinated him. He would play with the light switches or turn the hotel water on, just to check if it was still working.
