When selecting elements for Sun Peaks’ second annual wedding guide
our publishing team at SPIN relied on the curated style and expertise of the resort’s professional wedding planning team, Faith Yurkiw and Kaitlyn Lamotte. Combining their creativity and love for design, they pride themselves on incorporating new trends and classic elegance while providing couples with a stress free wedding experience. This year both co-ordinators are excited to continue to bring the outdoors in with the incorporation of greenery, no matter the season. During the winter they’re looking for plush faux furs and other cozy textures. When the weather warms they’re loving more of a bohemian theme and a continuation of the neutral, earthy colour pallets. The duo is also excited to see more couples going above and beyond for their close guests by hosting a private rehearsal dinner or a post wedding brunch. For Faith, growing up in Kamloops meant Sun Peaks was always her backyard and home away from home. Her fresh perspective on the industry,
KAITLYN LAMOTTE passion and professionalism make her a great fit for wedding co-ordination. She loves developing a personal relationship with each client and she feels it’s truly the key to making each event a unique and special affair to remember. Kaitlyn was drawn to the area’s natural beauty which she immediately recognized as an element for a premier wedding destination. Kaitlyn’s attention to detail has earned her a reputation as an impressive co-ordinator who makes couples feel they are her only client. She merges her love of the outdoors and weddings by providing an elevated mountain experience for all of her couples. Kaitlyn prides herself on offering flawless planning and execution of dream wedding days while providing a friendly, honest advice and assisting with suggestions, inspiration and creative designs. We hope you enjoy the guide and look forward to updating everyone with more amazing content and tips throughout the year on sunpeaksweddings.com. - Brandi Schier, Publisher

De signing YOUR DIN N E R
Gone are the days of the traditional chicken, beef, or fish. Now is the time of the customizable menu and no one is embracing this chance more than Hans Sterili, executive chef for Sun Peaks Resort LLP (SPR). His culinary team is opening up the possibilities when it comes to creating the perfect menu. “When Hans put together the catering guide, particularly for weddings, he took a little more of an unconventional approach. He tried to create some really memorable meals,” said Steve Novak, SPR’s food and beverage director. But Chef Stierli also enjoys sitting down with couples to help create their perfect menu to wow their guests. “I think for the couple that goes a long way because I think a lot of couples have a very specific vision and we try not to shoehorn into our preset menus,” said Novak. Whether you’re dreaming of a patio barbecue, comfort food, or an elegant five-course meal, the culinary team loves to run with ideas to create personalized receptions. “We would rather create these signature events and do them extraordinarily well and work with the couple than again try and force them into this traditional approach of pick a, b, or c.” It doesn’t stop at creating a reception that dazzles. Adding an interactive rehearsal dinner and a family brunch the next day are memorable inclusions to any nuptials. “I think back to when I got married and we, as the two families, sat down and had a really nice brunch and it was just a good opportunity to get to know each other in a more casual and relaxed environment,” said Novak. Chef Stierli is focused on freshness and sustainability. “He really does enjoy working with local and sustainable products as much as it makes sense. He’s always looking to connect with new suppliers in the area and constantly searching for the best product,” said Novak. He added the dedicated culinary team are there to make wedding visions come alive and to be memorable for the couple and their guests. “It’s going to be great quality. Their guests are going to walk away happy, they’re going to walk away happy, and we want them raving about us from a wedding perspective.”

A whim sical I do

After their first date at a local café, Triston Hill knew he had found the woman he was going to marry. Just three days after that first coffee Triston told his mum he found the one and just nine months later got down on one knee and proposed to his now-wife Tamara.
"Sun Peak s give s you that de stination wedding vib e while still b eing clo se to Kamloop s” “We were hitting it off. From that point on everything just seemed to click,” he said. “I feel like I knew from day one.” After going ring shopping together Tamara knew a proposal was coming, but she had no idea when or where. Triston wanted something memorable so he coordinated a photo shoot of Tamara and her older sister at Jamieson Creek in Kamloops complete with a surprise proposal. “I was planning on hiding in the bush, which I did, and at the right moment when she was taking photos by herself, Nicole (her sister) signaled me out and I proposed. She was crying, it was awesome.” The couple spent months looking at locations from Vancouver Island, to along the coast, to different mountain resorts. Tamara explained they wanted somewhere outdoors that would also be a little trip for their guests to take. “Sun Peaks gives you that destination wedding vibe while still being close to Kamloops and still being really affordable,” she said. Settling on Tod Mountain View as their ceremony location, the couple said “I do” on August 11. The pair’s friends and family were instrumental in creating their vision and incorporating many unique touches throughout the day From an arbour built by a bridesmaid’s husband to a guest book created by the groom’s dad, to the inclusion of the bride’s dog and a special fatherdaughter dance, the day was filled with personalized and sentimental moments. The couple opted to forgo a first look and instead read letters to each other with a door between them to have a moment together without seeing each other. “It was more of a note. It talked about how excited we were and our goals for the future and the |6

"When she wa s walking down I ju st thought to my self ‘thi s i s a day that our live s change.” things we are looking forward to doing together,” explained Tamara. Triston admitted he was nervous waiting for his bride to appear and walk down the aisle. Those nerves and emotions grew when he saw Tamara for the first time that day. “When she was walking down I just thought to myself ‘This is a day that our lives change. I get to be with the girl that I love most in my life forever and that’s going to be awesome.’ I just couldn’t wait to get started and have that night be special.” Following the ceremony they stayed behind for portraits while their guests went back to the Sun Peaks Grand Hotel for cocktails and Mother Nature decided to send the newlyweds some good luck with rain. They didn’t mind the showers and fondly noted the ceremony was the only time it didn’t rain all day. With a whimsical romantic theme, the couple transformed the hotel’s ballroom by bringing the outdoors inside. “We stuck with that vibe of bringing the outside inside because it’s a venue that doesn’t have windows so we really wanted people to have that feeling of still whimsical, woodsy, nature vibes,” said Tamara. |7

Reflecting on their day, the couple both agreed their one piece of advice to future Sun Peaks couples was to remain true to their vision. “My advice based off our wedding is to keep in mind what your end goal is for the wedding and what you picture in your head. Especially in a place like Sun Peaks because it’s so diverse. You can have an indoor ceremony, you can have an outdoor ceremony, you can have one near the hotel, you can have one like ours that wasn’t,” Tamara said. “You have a bunch of options.”

What to ask your
Wedding expert
You’re newly engaged and full of ideas for your special day but turning that vision into a reality can often be overwhelming. That’s where a wedding expert or planner can help you execute your concept for a stressfree wedding experience.
Photo ÉMILIE SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY
It’s important when you begin you ask questions throughout the process. When you first sit down with your expert be sure to ask if they do design, co-ordination or both. A wedding planner who does design work will work alongside you to help you with the details of how you want your decor to look, whereas a planner who focuses on coordination will put you in contact with vendors whose design style fits your style. When discussing the smaller details and elements you wish to incorporate, take the time to ask for a preferred vendor list as this will help you select vendors your planner already has a relationship with. Another important question to ask is what services your potential planner offers. Do they help with invitations, can they plan outside wedding events such as your rehearsal dinner, bridal shower, and post-wedding brunch and are they on site during your wedding? Having a clear understanding of their services will ensure no elements are missed.
Photo HOLLY LOUWERSE PHOTOGRAPHY
A great follow up question is what parts of the wedding are you responsible for planning as this will allow everyone to be on the same page from the beginning. During your initial meeting ask how many meetings you will have together before the big day and how you’ll be communicating in the months leading up to the event. If you prefer emails, text or phone calls tell them what works best for you. Clear communication from day one will set you up for wedding

planning success. Finally, ask for a timeline this will help you stay on track when finalizing seating charts, menus, accommodation and transportation, and making sure your vendors are booked far enough in advance. Working with a wedding specialist can add value and ease the stress of hosting one of the largest events of your life. Speak and meet with potential professionals until you find one who sets clear expectations and works with your budget. | 11

This season couples are incorporating experiencebased elements to their special day, from memorable rehearsal dinners, to playing on the mountain together, to unique cocktails to mark the occasion. Dreaming of a laid back and simple affair, Cam and Danielle Gledstone quickly agreed on Sun Peaks as their wedding destination. Cam had been visiting the resort for over two decades at his family’s cabin and the community was his home away from home. Together the couple created their own memories as season pass holders they visited often. It was a clear choice as the destination for their special day.
“We spend a lot of time up there, lots of family memories,” said Cam. “It’s such a beautiful spot, and a big part of our life so it kind of made the decision easy for both of us.” The couple’s journey to man and wife was gradual. They met when they were just 16 and 18 years old and remained friends for years before Danielle suggested they become more. “I used to tell him when we were friends that we were going to get married one day and tell him what kind of rings I wanted and he was an 18-year-old boy, but here we are,” she said. Five years after Danielle suggested they become more than friends Cam proposed on a family trip to Osoyoos, B.C. with the help of both of their fathers. Danielle had just climbed back into the boat after being out on the water skiing when their song, Van Morrison’s Into the Mystic, echoed across the lake and Cam got down on one knee and asked Danielle to marry him. “When we got back to the dock everyone was standing on the dock waving, cheering, crying. Champagne flowed! It was a lot of fun, we partied the night away,” said Cam. Knowing a ballroom wasn’t the right f it for them, the couple decided to say “I do” at the garden by the iconic covered bridge with a reception to follow at Masa’s Bar + Grill. | 16
C E L E B R AT I O N S “We just wanted somewhere outdoors. And with the bridge, the garden and the flowers are really what sold us. We just wanted some kind of relaxed area that still had lots of natural beauty. With the mountain in the background it was just the perfect spot,” explained Danielle. “I really wanted the natural beauty of Sun Peaks, all the flowers, mountains and trees... to be the focal point.” As they desired a relaxed wedding day the couple headquartered at Cam’s family’s duplex, where Danielle and her bridesmaids got ready on one side and Cam and the groomsmen on the other. The couple was able to sneak away for a stolen moment (with a dividing wall between them) to say hello and enjoy a moment with each other before walking down the aisle. Cam recalled the moment he saw Danielle walking down the aisle and said at first glance she looked absolutely
stunning. Then she continued to walk toward him and it was a beautiful moment. “I couldn’t stop smiling. I couldn’t believe how beautiful she looked. It was such an amazing moment and such a great memory.” Danielle followed the tradition of something old, new, borrowed and blue which included blue shoes, borrowed earrings, and an heirloom hairpin. She carried a bouqet fastened with a pin in memory of her Grandma, known lovingly as Bambi. Following the ceremony, the couple and their wedding party took the chairlift to the mid-mountain Sunburst Lodge where they had a celebratory drink before heading out for photos.
"I really wanted the natural b eauty of Sun Peak s, all the flower s, mountain s and tree s to b e the fo cal point. ”
“Cam and I had a bottle of champagne on our chair and I think was one of the most special moments of the day. It was just him and I on the chair and we just had our little moment, we just got married, just enjoyed being together.” Keeping with the relaxed mountain vibe the couple chose to have a casual reception with a buffet dinner followed by an amazing party. They added little touches to personalize their reception. Danielle spent months baking over 500 cookies which served as wedding favours and seating cards and they even went as far as bringing in their friends’ favourite beer. “All of our friends have a thing with Budweiser beer. It would
have been a big faux pas if we didn’t have Budweiser at our wedding!” said Danielle. Reflecting on their September wedding, the couple agreed their most memorable moments were heading up the lift together and spending time with just their closest friends. The newlywed’s advice for couples planning nuptials at Sun Peaks was to take the lift up for photos and fully enjoy the mountain. “You can’t go wrong. The food is amazing, and the little things really don’t matter if it’s such a beautiful venue and it’s such a wonderful experience and day just with your friends and family,” said Danielle.

A magic winter DE S T IN ATIO N CE LE B RAT I O N Heading home from work, Kate never imagined she’d walk into a marriage proposal straight out of a romantic comedy. Her now-husband Greg had covered their Vancouver apartment in red rose petals and while Hall and Oates’ You Make My Dreams played on repeat. She discovered a picture book filled with memories of their years together, but no Greg. On the f inal page of the book, a note said ‘meet me at the light walk.’ She soon found another note telling her to get ready to be picked up and whisked away. “I got downstairs and there was a limo bus waiting for me, it brought me all the way up to Grouse Mountain where I picked up a gondola ticket that Greg had left for me in our car and he was waiting for me at the top of the mountain,” she recalled. Walking along a path adorned with Christmas lights, she met Greg who was standing in a suit, he proceeded to get down on one knee and ask her to marry him. The couple, who both grew up in Ireland, met in Scotland while completing a masters in physiotherapy. They began dating in their second year of school and upon graduation applied for jobs in Canada and eventually became permanent residents. “Over the years he’s become my best f riend. He is the most loving and loyal person I’ve ever met. I knew that the rest of our lives we would have a really good f riendship but also have a really respectful relationship and just have so much fun together.”

“For the bride, the mo st memorable moment wa s her c eremony. She remini sc ed on walking down the ai sle and said it wa s like they were the only two there.” When choosing their wedding destination the O’Learys knew a mountain resort was just what they were looking for. The locations were unique as back home there are no skiable mountains. “It was just so different f rom what we’ve ever been to, any wedding we’ve attended in Ireland,” said Kate. “We knew that our family would be off work around the Christmas period, so it kind of made sense for us to have something different.” After selecting Sun Peaks the couple decided on the Sun Peaks Grand Hotel & Conference Centre as their venue, even before viewing the different wedding spaces in the resort. “We liked the idea of having it at the Grand, the fact that we could do the ceremony and the reception and have it all in one place. The fact that we could stay in the hotel and get ready, it just seemed like a really easy option.” Settling on the terrace, so Greg could get his outdoor ceremony, and a ballroom reception, the couple began planning and focused on making their day a holiday for their guests. | 21
C E L E B R AT I O N S
“Over the y ear s he’s b ecome my b e st friend. He i s the mo st loving and loy al per son I’ve ever met.” “We thought it would be a real destination for all our international family and friends coming over that they could actually spend a week there and have a wedding but also have a vacation,” she said. Kate followed the borrowed and blue tradition and was gifted an heirloom from her mother’s wedding day, a horseshoe with a blue ribbon that had been part of her garter. Kate wanted a special moment with her father and organized a first look once her hair and makeup were done and she was in her dress. “I really wanted that moment captured on camera as well. He was super emotional. It was a really, really lovely moment that we had that morning,” she recalled. For the bride, the most memorable moment was her ceremony. She reminisced on walking down the aisle and said it was like they were the only two there. She was full of emotion at that moment. “I think it was just excitement. That all of our best friends and family had flown across the world to come spend the whole day with us and excited to finally tie the knot,” she said. Following the wedding, the newlyweds were joined by their immediate family and bridal party at the midmountain chapel where the bride’s mum said a prayer and acknowledged the family who wasn’t able to join. Their f riends and family then headed down the mountain where they were serenaded by Kamloops artist Madison Olds during a cocktail hour before the formal reception. The O’Learys created a custom three-course meal with the hotel’s culinary team for their guests. “The food was a really big part of the day. We wanted the food to be great and for the guests to be happy,” Kate said. The couple then danced into the early hours with their closest family and f riends to end an amazing celebration in a special place. | 22
