Summer School Course Guide 2020

WELCOME

TO SUMMER SCHOOL 2020 We invite all Sun Prairie Area School District students to participate in Summer School. Students will be engaged in programs and activities that extend and enrich existing curriculum. We are pleased to continue the strong educational programs from the regular school year into Summer School. The majority of Summer School staff members support students in our District throughout the regular school year. Their education, expertise, and experience, along with that of educators who join us from other districts, benefit our students. The Sun Prairie Area School District Summer School program supports the vision of offering excellent educational opportunities throughout the entire year. We are focused on fulfilling our mission statement:

“Futures depend on us ... every child, every day!”

Fees and Refunds

GENERAL INFORMATION

If your child is unable to attend Summer School after you have enrolled and paid a fee, you may have that amount applied to your child’s lunch account for the upcoming school year or have it refunded to you. Requests for fee refunds must be made before the Summer School session begins, unless there are extenuating circumstances. Please contact Jo Guyette, at 608.834.6579 or jmguyet@sunprairieschools.org with questions about refunds. All fees are due after you receive your child’s Summer School schedule and no later than May 8, 2020.

Attendance

The Summer School Course Guide includes information primarily for Pre-K-8 grade levels. Information for students in grades 9-12 was sent directly to students and their parents/guardians and posted online. We hope this is an easy‑to‑use guide for everything you need to know about our District Summer School program. If you have suggestions on how we can make the guide more user‑friendly, please contact Shelley Joan Weiss at sjweiss@sunprairieschools.org.

Students Who May Participate

All students who reside in the Sun Prairie Area School District or are currently open enrolled in the districts Pre-K-12 programs are eligible to participate in Summer School. All review and credit recovery courses are offered for free to our students. Some enrichment courses have a fee for consumable materials (i.e., items students make and bring home). Some opportunities offered through Summer School are available only to students who qualify. Those programs will be clearly identified in the course information, or the information will be provided to students and their parents/ guardians directly via email or through the teachers (e.g., advanced placement bootcamps). Non‑resident families may enroll their children on a tuition basis. For non‑resident fee information, please review the information at the link below or on the Summer School website or call a Summer School team member. Open Enrollment and Tuition

4

Sun Prairie Summer School Course Guide

For course review, credit recovery, or initial high school credit classes, high school students are expected to attend Summer School every day it is in session. Attendance is recorded and reported just as it is during the regular school year. Parents/guardians will be notified by the school if their child is not present. Please be aware that the same state statutes and Board of Education policies on attendance are in effect during Summer School. If you know your child is going to be absent, please call the school and/or send a written note to the school to inform school administrators of the absence. When your child returns from an absence, we ask that the parents please send a note with the child. This ensures that we know parents/guardians are aware of their child’s absence.

Nursing Services

The Sun Prairie Area School District will have health care assistants, under the supervision of the District Nurse, Debbie Brown, on staff at all elementary schools and at the high school. School administrators at Prairie Phoenix Academy will be instructed to contact the District Nurse or health care assistant at the high school if needed. More information will be available to those who register for Summer School and are in need of ongoing nursing services. Please contact the District Nurse, Debbie Brown, at 608.834.6583 or dlbrown@sunprairieschools.org if you have questions about nursing services during Summer School. If a child becomes ill or injured while at school, Welcome Center staff will contact parents/guardians to pick up the child or to inform parents/guardians that the child has been transported to a medical facility.

Nutrition Services

Breakfast and/or Lunch

School Nutrition staff will be serving breakfast and lunch at all school levels. Menus will be available on the District’s website: https://sunprairie.nutrislice.com/menus-eula. If your child is currently eligible for free/reduced status will continue throughout Summer School. If you are new to the District, applications for free/reduced meals are at: https://tinyurl.com/rnhmgu7, under FREE AND REDUCED MEAL INFORMATION and at the District Support Center. The costs for meals are available on the website: https://tinyurl.com/rnhmgu7, under SCHOOL MEALS. Student lunch accounts are in Infinite Campus. You can pay for your child’s meals online through the Infinite Campus portal. Infinite Campus can be accessed in the following way: • From the District Website, www.sunprairieschools.org, click on the Infinite Campus icon on the right. • Log in to Infinite Campus with your username and password. • If you need assistance accessing Infinite Campus, please request at: https://tinyurl.com/sp2f8xw.

Balances & Transactions

• Your student’s food service account is located on the FOOD SERVICE tab in Infinite Campus. • From this tab you may view balances and see the transactions for each student.

Food Allergies

School Nutrition staff and health assistants are aware of students who have food allergies. Tables are identified for students who have allergies. Please speak with your child if you feel that he or she may be safer eating at a table that is available for those with allergies. Please speak with your child about not sharing food from or with other students, to avoid allergic reactions.

Fruit Bowl Available

Each school has a free fruit bowl available for students. We strongly encourage students to take fruit as a snack whenever they like. The fruit bowl may be in the cafeteria or office area.

Snacks

We encourage students to bring a nutritious snack to enjoy during breaks. We ask that parents/guardians avoid sending candy or snacks that have little or no nutritious value. Your support of our District wellness policy promoting nutritious eating is appreciated. The class or school does not offer snacks, other than the fruit bowl, on a regular basis.

Payments

• To make a payment into your student’s account, click on the payments tab. • Parents/guardians may set up recurring payments or simply make a one-time payment. Parents/guardians may send in cash or check payments. A reminder call will be made if your child’s balance falls below $9.00. If you set up recurring payments, consider setting your low balance above $9.00 in order to avoid these reminder calls. If you have any questions about Summer School meals, please contact Julie Wetmore at 608.834.6544 or jrwetmo1@sunprairieschools.org. Students do not have to eat breakfast or lunch, but if a child goes to the food line, servers are required by Board of Education policy to serve that child a meal. If you do NOT want your child to eat the food that is offered for a fee by the Sun Prairie Area School District, you need to speak with your child and tell them NOT to get in line for breakfast or lunch. Parents/guardians should not rely on the teachers or the nutrition staff members to restrict children from eating food, as this is the responsibility of parents/guardians.

Transportation Services

Transportation eligibility is based on your child’s primary home address. To be eligible for transportation, a student must live within the Summer School attendance area and more than one (1) mile (elementary) or one‑and‑a‑half (1.5) miles (middle, upper middle, and high school levels) from the Summer School site. Requests for District‑provided transportation (busing) must be made prior to the deadline during the online Summer School registration process. Busing is provided for the June/July, 8:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Summer School classes and for the August middle school New Beginnings class. • Parents/guardians who would like to request busing must complete the request in Infinite Campus (see page 15). • There will be no requests accepted after April 15, 2020, as the District and bus company will be creating routes at this time. • Parents/guardians who do not make the request by April 15, 2020, must provide their own transportation to/from summer School. In order to receive transportation both to and from school, your child must have a full schedule for each class period (8:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.). Buses do not run between classes. Current Pre-K students have one class option that is offered from 8:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Elementary Transportation

If a student is attending a Summer School site that is different from their home school but lives within walking distance of their home school, the student will need to walk to the home school to be picked up by District transportation.

PLEASE NOTE: The District does not transport students to/from child care centers (Play Haven, Gingerbread House, etc.). Parents/guardians should work with their child care center if transportation is needed. If you have questions about District bus transportation, please contact: Rhonda Page, Business Services Manager, at 608.834.6512 or rspage@sunprairieshools.org, or Melissa Bautz at 608.834.6699 or mabautz@sunprairieschools.org. Please note that the bus stop your child is assigned for Summer School might be different than their stop during the school year. Routes and stops are consolidated during Summer School in order to efficiently provide transportation for students from multiple attendance areas. The District will not be able to accommodate requests for changes or additional bus stops.

Safety

Creating and maintaining a safe and secure environment is our first and most important job here in the Sun Prairie Area School District. Fire and severe weather drills are conducted at the Summer School sites in June and July. The visitor management procedures are in place throughout Summer School. Parents/guardians and other visitors must check into the main office and provide a photo identification card that will be run through the RAPTOR visitor management system. Visitors will get a sticky badge identifying the visitor, who they are visiting, the location they are visiting, and when they will be exiting. The sticker badge must be returned to the office at the conclusion of the visit. We appreciate that all parents/ guardians and other visitors meet our expectations for supporting student, staff, and visitor safety. Our youngest learners, in the Kickoff to Kindergarten (K2K) classes will have age-appropriate specialized training in bus safety, traffic safety, following instructions from a crossing guard, fire, severe weather, and active threat procedures. If students, parents/guardians, or staff become aware of any potential or real safety issue or threat, they should notify the Summer School principal or a teacher immediately. If the threat is urgent, individuals should dial 911.

PREPARING FOR REGISTRATION Sun Prairie High School

Registration is accomplished through a Google Form that was sent to students and parents/guardians via email and is posted on the Summer School website.

Prairie Phoenix Academy

Registration is accomplished through the teachers and administrator at Prairie Phoenix Academy.

Elementary, Middle, and Upper Middle Levels

Students and parents/guardians should review classes available for selection prior to submitting requests for classes. • Each student will have the opportunity to participate in four classes. • Once students and parents/guardians have decided on the four (4) classes they would like to request, they should fill out the list on the form included in this guide. • Students and parents/guardians should select four (4) initial classes they would like to request and two (2) alternate classes. • Parents/Guardians will NOT select a time for the class. Students will be randomly assigned to available classes. • The exception to this will be specific music classes that are offered at specific times. • Although we hope to place all students in the classes on their initial request list of four (4) classes, we want to be prepared with alternate selections if classes fill. Important note: Transportation will be listed as a request. If a student qualifies for transportation, this class should be selected. Selecting transportation does NOT count against the four class selections. All classes (reading review, math review, and enrichment) are held for 70 minutes each at the elementary, middle, and upper middle site for five weeks, Monday – Thursday, June 22 – July 23, 8 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. If a teacher has recommended a student for reading and/or math review classes, each of these recommended classes will fill one period for five weeks. Please keep this in mind when requesting classes. For example: • A student with a recommended reading class would be assigned reading and three (3) initial enrichment classes. • A student with a recommended reading AND math class would be assigned reading, math, and two (2) initial enrichment classes. Once class requests have been submitted students will be randomly assigned to classes based on those requests. This ensures everyone has the same access to classes regardless of the date/time they registered.
