Welcome

Plenty of reasons to visit Sunraysia TOURISM has long been one of the Mildura region’s biggest drawcards with thousands of visitors making the journey to our part of the world every year. Lured by our warm Mediterranean climate, beautiful natural scenery, award-winning restaurants and never-ending list of attractions and events, people of all ages can enjoy an extended holiday or short stay in Sunraysia. The most recent ABS figures show the tourism industry injects more than $215 million into our local economy each year and underpins around 1,200 full time jobs. The industry is therefore a major and vitally important component of our local economy. Undoubtedly one of our region’s biggest tourism drawcards is the Murray River. In fact, according to a state government report conducted last year, about 400,000 individual visitor days occur at the Mildura riverfront every year. This is one of the many reasons why Mildura Rural City Council is leading a major project to reinvigorate our riverfront and make it an even more exciting and enticing tourist destination. Thanks to generous financial support from both the state and federal governments, we’re undertaking an $18.3 million

redevelopment of the riverfront. A 1.2km stretch of parklands and facilities between the Nowingi Place near the George Chaffey Bridge and the Powerhouse next to Jaycee Park will be enhanced. The project will connect Mildura’s CBD to

the river at Langtree Avenue via a pedestrian promenade that crosses the existing railway line and leads down to the riverfront. Concept plans also include a new two storey riverfront building, with a restaurant/café on the first floor and a rowing club and rowing facilities on the ground floor. While our riverfront precinct is always popular, tourists and visitors to our region really are spoilt for choice. Fascinating history, amazing art, excellent tours, vibrant shopping and world-class dining are what Mildura is about. If you’re not sure how to spend your time here, or worried you might miss out on something, why not pop into the Mildura Visitor Information and Booking Centre, on the corner of Deakin Avenue and Twelfth Street. There you’ll find everything you need to know about our region, information, expert and friendly advice and local souvenirs. You can even book tours and tickets to performances while you’re there. However you choose to spend your stay, I am sure you will enjoy Mildura and hope that you will return to our great part of the world again soon. Cr Glenn Milne Mayor, Mildura Rural City Council

Murray River

Cruising the Murray

FOR more than 50 years, Mildura Paddlesteamers has plied the Murray River, offering visitors and locals alike the chance to ride on a paddle steamer, and soak up the river environment from a different perspective. Among its fleet of rivercraft are the PS Melbourne, PV Rothbury and PV Mundoo. The PS Melbourne was launched at Koondrook on the Murray River in 1912 and

was built by the Victorian Government as a work boat. The Rothbury was built in 1881 at Gunbower, Victoria. Meanwhile, the Mundoo was built in 1987 at Goolwa, South Australia. Visitors can choose from a variety of river cruising options, including two-hour cruises that pass through Lock 11 and around Lock Island to

the Mildura Weir before heading downstream along the mighty Murray and back. Enjoy winery or lunch cruises, and there are evening dinner cruises available. Murray River

Unlock the secrets of Mildura’s serene riverfront Weir and Lock 11 Hugh King Drive, Mildura

MILDURA’S beautiful riverfront and its constant water level are largely owed to the weirs that are established along the mighty Murray River. The Mildura weir helps to keep the river at a regulated level for irrigation and to make passage for paddle steamers, houseboats and other river vessels. At times when water in the system is scarce, the weir maintains the river at a reasonable level, providing a place for visitors and locals to continue to admire and enjoy the scenic river views. As the only place on the Murray River where the lock and weir are separated by an island, the Mildura Weir is a very unique sight.

The lock allows river traffic to pass through the weir system, and negotiate the 3.7m difference in water level from one side to the other. History was made when the first paddle steamer passed through Lock 11 on August 2, 1927. Visitors can see the lock in action and learn about its construction and operation with paddle steamers and houseboats passing through its chamber every day. While there, visitors can explore Lock Island, a 15ha bush land site that’s home to many native animals. Lock 11 Park has become a popular cultural hub hosting events such as Opera by the Lock. Lock 11 is located in Hugh King Drive, Mildura.

Service you can trust

Fruit fly alert SUNRAYSIA welcomes its visitors with open arms, but it cannot be stressed enough how important your job is in ensuring our fruit growing region continues to prosper. Mildura is in the middle of a Fruit Fly Exclusion Zone, designed to protect Australia’s horticultural hot spots from this pest. Your important role is to make sure you do not bring fresh fruit or vegetables into the exclusion zone, no matter how perfect the product looks. It could have eggs or maggots hidden inside. Be aware, by bringing fresh fruit or vegetables into the zone, you are breaking the law. If you have fresh fruit or vegetables with you, eat them or throw them in the roadside bins provided before you enter the Fruit Fly Exclusion Zone. Just one infested piece of fruit or vegetable can cause an outbreak. Visitors to Sunraysia are also warned that random roadblocks operate within the zone and fines from $200 to $20,000 can be enforced for bringing prohibited fruit or vegetables into the area. There are large fruit fly signs along the highways leading into the Fruit Fly Exclusion Zone featuring “Fang” the Fruit Fly warning travellers to dispose of or eat any fresh fruit they have. Visitors from Adelaide will notice the signs along the Sturt Highway after Daveyston.

Festivals and Events

Milestone celebration Mildura Wentworth Arts Festival February 28 to March 9 Various locations

TO celebrate its 20th anniversary,The Mildura Wentworth Arts Festival will this year present a powerful program of visual and performing arts for the whole community from Friday, February 28 until Sunday, March 9. To mark the milestone, Arts Mildura will present an exhibition at the Mildura Arts Centre, showcasing 20 years of festival and community history including past photos, drawings, sculptures, costumes, stories, documents and projections. The first festival event in 1994 involved a gathering of friends, with poetry being shared at the then Stefano’s Cantina by Australian poets Philip Hodgins and Robert Gray. By 1996 the Mildura Arts Festival was born in conjunction with the Mildura Arts Centre’s Gentle Arts Festival. Over the years the festival has introduced many popular community events such as Opera on the Lock, Music Under the Stars at Perry Sandhills, Backlane Festival and in recent years, contributed to existing community projects such as the Mardi Gras and the Mildura Jazz Food and Wine Festival.

The continued growth of the festival eventually saw the literary program split off to become the Mildura Writers Festival, which continues to remember its origins with the Philip Hodgins Memorial Medal awarded each year to an outstanding Australian poet. The separation of events allowed more space and opportunity for a broader arts program across the calendar year. This year locals and visitors to the region will be treated to a variety of acts including internationally acclaimed theatre performance White Rabbit Red Rabbit, choirs at Walk Wentworth Sing, Fashion Week including a special appearance by Dulcie du Jour and friends and German performers The Beez. The gala event will be the Street Party in the city heart’s Langtree Avenue with entertainment by a range of performers including Bollywood dancers, buskers, didgeridoo players, rap performers, street art and pop-up theatres. The atmosphere will be set with alfresco dining, gourmet foods and regional wines. Visitors can also enjoy live music, fashion, outdoor big screen, musical workshops, cabaret, comedy, bushwalks and art exhibitions throughout the Murray Darling region during the 10 day festival. For program details and tickets visit www.artsmildura.com.au.

Ski race action Robinvale Euston 80 Ski Race Classic March 7-9 Robinvale Boat Ramp

MORE than 400 entrants will take part in the Robinvale Euston 80 Ski Race, guaranteed to be a massive three day event on the river for ski lovers. Starting and finishing at the Robinvale Boat Ramp, the program will be jam packed and will start with scrutineering at McLennan Drive, Robinvale on Friday, March 7 followed by a Show n Shine at 3pm from Perrin Street, through to Caix Square in Robinvale. Awards will be presented for best inboard and outboard and there will be plenty of giveaway prizes throughout the day. Social racing gets underway on Saturday along with the Dash for Cash, the junior section, veterans, senior social, disabled and under 10s. Then on Sunday, the crowds will be out in force to see the experts take to the water for the main event. A SIGNIFICANT part of the region’s food and wine culture is Slow Food Mildura’s Festa Della Vendemmia (Feast of the Grape Harvest). An important part of traditional Italian culture, the festa will be held on long tables, under hightrellised vines at Gino and Elina Garreffa’s Belar Vineyard on Belar Avenue near the corner of Eleventh Street on the Saturday of the long weekend. It will start with a complimentary aperitivo (pre-dinner drink), and primo piatto (starters) at 7pm. Then it’s a foodie’s paradise with a series of courses featuring the best of local and seasonal meats, vegetables and produce. The feast will be prepared by the finest local chefs and cooks, who

are more than happy to cater for vegetarians as well. This will be the fifth Harvest Feast, with the event hailed an outstanding success by locals and visitors, many of whom plan well ahead of the Festa to make sure they don’t miss out. Brad Fyfe, leader of Slow Food Mildura and senior lecturer in cooking at Sunraysia Institute of TAFE said, “Everyone who comes along will enjoy the traditional, rustic outdoor setting and the fantastic food prepared from local produce. Party until dark Red Cliffs Lunarfest Saturday, March 29 Red Cliffs

COME and join in the biggest annual social event on the Red Cliffs calendar, the annual Lunarfest, which celebrates the end of the grape harvest season. See the town come alive with local youngsters performing music in the park from around 2pm and then a street parade from 5pm. The whole town gets behind the event, with impressive theme

based floats and excited children in costumes and face paint. Local car clubs, schools, seniors groups and musicians are among those to take part in the Lunarfest parade, with plenty of prizes to be won in the day’s raffles. Food, drink, novelty stalls and kids rides will be available from early afternoon until dark,

and there will be a concert in Barclay Square following the street parade. It will feature a range of music such as ethnic song, dance, blues, jazz and gospel, with the party continuing until dark. This year money raised from the event will be used to fund scholarships at each of the school’s

in Red Cliffs, Cardross, Sunnycliffs and Nangiloc as well as funding other educational opportunities, community and sporting groups. So come along, browse the market stalls, enjoy a bite to eat and share in the carnival like atmosphere as growers let down their hair and celebrate the end of a busy harvest season.

DREAM big, hope big, relay big and fight back; that’s the motto for one of the region’s largest community events, the annual Relay For Life. This year around 2000 relayers are expected to take to the track to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer and fight back against the disease. The popular event runs from 3pm on Saturday, March 29 until 9am on Sunday, March 30 and will see teams of 10 to 15 participate in a relay-style walk or run to raise funds for Cancer Council.

Relay For Life brings together the whole community, with local organisers hoping to register over 100 teams for this year’s event. It’s a night of fun and remembrance with many teams dressing up and really getting into the spirit of the 18 hour event. You can choose to camp overnight and stay for the whole event, or just visit and enjoy the free entertainment, prizes and ceremonies that make the relay so inspirational. There are no age limitations or fitness requirements for Relay For Life, it’s open to anyone and everyone. For more information or to sign up, visit www.relayforlife.org.au

Fast paced cup carnival action

Mildura Pacing Cup Carnival April 10, 11 and 12 Mildura Harness Racing Club

RACING fans gear up and get ready for another big three days of action this April with the Mildura Pacing Cup Carnival. Held on April 8, 10 and 12, the event promises non-stop excitement at the home of harness racing in Sunraysia, the Mildura Harness Racing Club. The club is one of 25 country harness racing clubs in Victoria, and holds about 30 meetings a year but there’s no doubt this is the big one on

the calendar. Entrants will be vying for $50,000 in the main event which usually draws a crowd of about 3000. The action won’t be limited to the track though, with a full schedule of entertainment to be held over the three days including the Party Marquee on the Saturday night, a Cup Eve dinner on-board the PS Mundoo, and a golf day at the Riverside Golf Club. For the foodies among the racing fans, there’s also a range of dining options available including a champagne breakfast on Cup Day and the Quite Famous Upstairs Dining Room open each night of the carnival.

There will also be plenty of free activities for children during the carnival, including pony trot exhibition races. The Mildura Harness Racing Club is conveniently located close to the city centre at Mildura Recreation Reserve, No. 1 Oval, Eleventh Street. Gates open at 5pm, with racing to start at approximately 6.30pm. Admission is $10 adults, $5 pensioners for the first two nights. On Cup Night, it’s $15 for adults and $10 for pensioners. Entry is free for children under 18 accompanied by an adult. All information about the carnival can be found at www.milduraharness.org.au

Extreme horse sport Australian Mounted Games Pairs Championships April 19-20 Wentworth Showgrounds

A SERIES of very fast races performed on horses, Mounted Games are an exciting sport for spectators and participants. Competitors need to have a high degree of athletic ability, good riding skills, great handto-eye co-ordination and a competitive spirit. Mounted Games were the inspiration of Prince Philip, who asked the director of the Horse of the Year Show if he could devise a competition for children who could not afford an expensive, well-bred pony. The first Mounted Games Championship was held in 1957 for the Prince Philip Cup and it was an immediate success. International Mounted Games now has members all over the world. The fun and excitement of the sport will be on show for all to see in Wentworth in April when the Australian Pairs Championships are held at the showgrounds. It will see the best riders from New South

Wales, South Australia, Western Australia and New Zealand compete over two days. The Australian Pairs Championships will be

held on April 19 and 20 with an 8.30am start on both days. The finals will be held on Sunday afternoon.

Garage sale gold Junction Junk Garage Sale Easter Sunday, April 20 Maps from Ruby’s Cargo Gift and Craft Shop, Corner Adams and Sandwych Streets

THEY say one person’s trash is the other’s treasure, and it’s this motto that springs to mind with Wentworth’s Easter Junction Junk Garage Sale. The mother of all garage sales, collectors will be in heaven when they feast their eyes on the large range of used goods on offer. If you fancy yourself as a treasure hunter, pick up a town map from Ruby’s Cargo which will be clearly marked with garage sale addresses, or keep an eye out for homes with signs and balloons out. Garage sites remain unknown until 9am when the maps become available, so the excitement in Wentworth will definitely be high that day. Most years usually draw more than 20 sale sites throughout the town, so whether you’re looking for homewares, tools, books, clothes or just the general thrill of the bargain, you’re sure to find it at Wentworth in this unique event.

IF you are a war history buff, then you cannot pass up a visit to the Mildura RSL RAAF Air Museum and Memorial, which is dedicated to commemorating the key role the town played in the training of young RAAF pilots during World War II. It is located in the old RAAF headquarters building which is one of only two remaining structures on the airfield that dates back to the era. The other is the Bellman 201 Hangar. Although it is owned and operated by the Mildura RSL, the museum is still manned by passionate volunteers who are eager to educate visitors on the role Mildura played in World War II. From 1942 to 1946, the Mildura base was the home of No. 2 Operational Training Unit (2OTU), and held the role of providing operational fighter conversion and training to pilots before they were posted to their operational

A hardworking icon Big Lizzie Barclay Square, Red Cliffs

UNDOUBTEDLY the icon of Red Cliffs, Big Lizzie stands as a proud reminder of the hard work and determination the town was built on. Located in Barclay Square on the Calder Highway, this massive tractor engine is the largest ever built in Australia. It was so slow it took over two years (1917-1919) to make the journey from Melbourne to Red Cliffs. And it is little wonder. It weighs more than 45 tonnes, is 10.36 metres long, 3.35 metres wide, and 5.49 metres high. It was powered by a 60 horse-power single cylinder Blackstone crude oil engine weighing eight tonnes. The turning circle was a sight to behold, as it took a radius of nearly 70 metres to turn it around. It towed two massive trailers, each with their own water and oil reserve tanks, and it had an overall carrying capacity of 80 tonnes. To spread the load and stop Big Lizzie from sinking into the sand, platforms made of iron were attached to the wheels with hinges and cables. For five years Big Lizzie was put to work clearing mallee scrub in Red Cliffs, then was moved to Glendinning Station near Balmoral. It stayed there for 40 years until it was rescued and returned to Red Cliffs to be put on display. Today it is a popular stop over for those travelling on the Calder Highway to stretch their legs, and find out how this machinery marvel worked.

In order to do this, they have collected many items of significance to the area so the community can not only be reminded of its heritage, but also to educate younger

generations about the lifestyles of their parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents. Run solely by dedicated volunteers, the museum began in the early 1990s with a focus on small engines before its founders realised there were other farming tools that needed to be rescued. As a result, the focus and the collection grew. You can also see displays of household goods and photographs at the museum, making it a perfect place to visit for all kinds of history buffs. You can visit the Robinvale Rural Life Museum every Thursday and Saturday and by appointment. Entry is $2.

All aboard a unique ride Red Cliffs Historical Steam Railway Red Cliffs

VISITORS of all ages are sure to be delighted with a trip on the Red Cliffs Historical Steam Railway, which takes you on a leisurely trip through the beautiful scenery of the town’s vineyards. The 1901 Kerr Stuart Locomotive known as “Lukee” runs on the first Sunday of each month except for January and February, offering a 30 minute ride that departs from the restored Karadoc station. Once you’re on board all that’s left to do is sit back, breathe in the fresh country air, and appreciate the sights as they go by. You then arrive at Thurla station, where there is a chance to get off the locomotive, and see it turned around on a specially built turntable, You’ll then head back for an equally pleasing return trip. More than just a pleasant trip for locals and tourists, Lukee has huge historical and cultural importance to Red Cliffs. It is the only tourist steam train in the area and the railway is one of the few small gauge railways throughout Australia. Lukee is also the only locomotive of its type left in the world, guaranteeing an authentic experience.

It was built in 1901 in Britain before it spent two years in India. It was then shipped back to Britain to be rebuilt, and then on to Tasmania. After the South Australian Government bought it in 1921, it was purchased by the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission of Victoria three years later. Until 1954 Lukee was used to cart briquettes from the Victorian Railways siding to the commission’s pumping station at Cliffside. After a temporary retirement, the unique

locomotive was restored to its former glory by the Sunraysia Steam Preservation Society in the 1980s. Its carriages were built by the Red Cliffs Historical Steam Railway. To ride the rails of history head out to the corner of the Werrimull Road and the Calder Highway, Red Cliffs on the first Sunday of each month, except for January and February. Costs are $15 for families, $6 for adults, and $3 for children. Last train pulls out at 3.30pm. For more information call 5024 3814.

Back where it all began

Old Mildura Homestead Mildura

GO right back to where Mildura and its early pioneers’ story really began, with a visit to the Old Mildura Homestead in Cureton Avenue, overlooking the picturesque Murray River. Set among transquil park like surrounds, the homestead is comprised of a red-gum slab building, a replica of the first home built in Mildura circa 1847, and an adjoining brick building identical to the extension added when the Chaffey family lived there. The entire precinct represents the station life of the 1850s and offers visitors a chance to reflect on how the first European explorers, pastoralists and later, those who brought with them irrigation

know-how, changed the landscape through their determination. The river running alongside the property also offers visitors a chance to reflect by the basic element of water needed to survive in the harsh, drought-prone region. By glimpsing inside the Old Homestead it is not hard to imagine how harsh the life would have been in Mildura for those who were brave enough to venture here. The isolation was one of the biggest obstacles to surviving and thriving. These days the homestead is popular with locals as a wedding venue, visitors are encouraged to pack a picnic and enjoy the relaxing surrounds of the Old Homestead with a special glimpse into the region’s history.

Our prehistoric past Pioneer World Museum Wentworth

TAKE a step back in time to explore the landscape of the local region as it would have been 1.8 million years ago, at the Pioneer World Museum. Operated by the Rotary Club of Wentworth, the museum gives visitors the chance to view indigenous artefacts and a megafauna display based on fossil remains discovered around Wentworth and in Mungo National Park. There is good news for dinosaur lovers because that includes a five metre tall model of the Muttaburrasaurus, added to the museum earlier this year. You can also explore the region’s pioneering history dating back more than 150 years, and marvel at the grit and determination of our early settlers. Located at the junction of the Murray and Darling rivers, Wentworth, once a thriving port town owed much of its prosperity to its location. Visitors to the museum can find out more about this prosperous time and the colonial township. Over the years the Rotary Club has collected more than 3000 artefacts and relics, from

tools, instruments and documents to everyday items which tell the story of many aspects of Wentworth’s history. They also have one of Australia’s biggest photographic collections of riverboats and original buildings. Visitors have a great chance to learn more about the 1956 floods and the role played by the Fergie tractor in saving the town from

inundation. The Wentworth Pioneer Museum is located at 117 Beverley Street, Wentworth, opposite the Old Wentworth Gaol. It is open seven days a week from 10am until 4pm. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for pensioners and $2 for children. For more information, call 5027 3160.

TO fully understand the blood, sweat and tears that have gone into Sunraysia’s fruit blocks, you need to understand the history of our soldier settlements. When the first Aussie troops began coming home from Europe and the Middle East after the end of World War I, soldier settlements were planned for Victoria’s northwest. Red Cliffs would be the first. It would cost $88 an acre to build farms and water supply works on the 10,000 acres fronting onto the Murray River at Red Cliffs. Returning soldiers were expected to clear the land and dig the water supply channels before growing grapes on their farms. By 1924, seven hundred blocks had been cleared. The Red Cliffs and District

Historical Society is dedicated to preserving this history since it was founded in 1984, when some of the original soldiers and their wives were still alive. Today, the society’s museum houses memorabilia, photographs, and written records that are vital to the history of Red Cliffs and its surrounds. There are more than 300 photos of the 700 men and one woman who returned from the Great War and began the settlement in the Mallee’s harsh environment. The museum is housed in the old Red Cliffs Court House on Jamieson Avenue and is open on the first Sunday of every second month from 2pm until 4pm or by appointment. If these walls could talk The Langtree Hall Mildura

BUILT in 1889, Mildura’s Langtree hall has been reinvented numerous times and is packed full of history. As Mildura’s first public hall, it has been home to numerous events. It’s so diverse it has been everything from a roller skating rink to a court of petty sessions until the courthouse was built in 1892. It has a history as a performance venue too. It was once refurbished before it became known as the Lyric Theature in about 1913. It’s also been a gymnasium, billiard saloon and storage room. The hall began its life in Langtree Avenue, and has been moved twice. In 1991 it was painstakingly

pulled apart and rebuilt behind a cottage at 79 Walnut Avenue, meaning an important part of Mildura’s early history was saved and returned to its former glory. It was reopened as a museum in 1993 and is home to a collection of marvellous memorabilia collected by the Cornell family, including old gramophones, restored furniture and a display of more than 1200 international dolls. The Langtree Hall Museum is open Tuesday to Friday, 11am to 4pm and Saturdays by appointment. Entry for adults is $5.50, concession is $4.50 and students, $1. The hall is closed Good Friday and Anzac Day. For more information phone 5021 3090 or 0427 113090 or email basucorn@gmail.com

ONE of the most important tasks small towns have is preserving their history, and the Red Cliffs and Irymple RSL are dedicated to doing just that at the Red Cliffs Military Museum. Their collection of wonderful displays is extensive, and features artefacts from the Boer War, World War I, World War II, Vietnam, and East Timor. It includes photographs, memorabilia, and other collectibles that were entrusted by local families for safe keeping. These precious items were held in a billiard room attached to the Red Cliffs RSL that was no longer used, but as the number of items grew it seemed a waste not to display them to the public.

Since 1997 the museum has been opened up for public viewing to a growing number of curious history enthusiasts. A team of dedicated volunteers commit their time to maintaining the collection, looking after displays and records and accepting new items. Come on in to the museum to see military uniforms from World War I to the present day, medals, firearms and Japanese swords. The Red Cliffs Military Museum is open from 9am until midday every Friday and on the first Sunday of each month from 10am until 4pm. To visit outside these times, call 5024 1499 to make an appointment. Admission is $2 per adult, children, free.

Toughest place in town

Old Wentworth Gaol Wentworth

LIFE behind bars isn’t meant to be a picnic, but for prisoners thrown into the Old Wentworth Gaol it was a step up from the usual lock-ups used around the time it was built. Its construction took three years from 1879, and it was a single storey brick building constructed from locally made clay bricks and featured bluestone trim brought in from Malmsbury.

Coffee

But there’s more to the Old Wentworth Gaol than the materials it was made from. It’s especially unique because it was the first Australian designed gaol, with colonial architect James Barnett responsible for the design. It was used as a template for gaols in Hay and Dubbo, and Sydney’s Long Bay Gaol copied the design used for the cells. After the gaol closed in 1927 it was used for a variety of activities, including classrooms for the Wentworth Central School. Today, it is a major tourist drawcard for the

You can walk through the cells and go at your own pace on a self-guided tour, looking at artefacts from the prison, and imagining what life as a prisoner in the late 1800s would have been like. The wonder of nature

Kings Billabong Nichols Point

COME and see why Mildura has developed a reputation as a home for amazing natural wonders, at one of Sunraysia’s most high value conservation reserves, Kings Billabong. Located right on Mildura’s doorstep and bordering a wide stretch of the Murray, the 2154 hectare large Billabong is home to wetlands of international

significance and to many species of waterbird like Whistling Kites and Swamp Harriers. A new management plan is now in place, which aims to protect and enhance this important area while encouraging tourism and activities like bushwalking, cycling, camping, fishing and bird watching. Local indigenous people have enjoyed the Billabong’s food supply for thousands of years and it was an important meeting place between Murray nations and

travellers from the south. The Chaffey Brothers from Canada selected Kings Billabong as the central water supply to establish the Mildura Irrigation Settlement. By 1891 a 1000 horse powered pumping engine was installed at Psyche Bend to maintain the water level. The restored steam-powered pump at Psyche Bend can often be seen operating on key holiday weekends. Today, the reserve is

supported by the Friends of Kings Billabong who can regularly be seen helping to maintain the health and integrity of this special place. Visit the lookout and enjoy panoramic views over the Billabong and take a short 200 metre loop walk down to the water’s edge. For more information about Kings Billabong visit www. parkweb.vic.gov.au

IF you’re wondering how the town of Red Cliffs got its name then take a drive out to the Murray Cliffs lookout and scenic reserve. See for yourself the magical, rich red colour of the high river cliffs and the striking reflection they make on the surface of the passing Murray. After seeing such a sight you’ll be asking yourself: “Could Red Cliffs have been called anything else!” Enjoy the beauty of nature while exploring the Red Cliffs scenic reserve that provides a relaxing place to stroll about while discovering its many treasures. To make it easier to get about the area, boardwalks and viewing areas have been erected. The scenic reserve is a 21ha park with a diverse make-up comprising ancient Aboriginal middens, bird populations and the remains of the old Carwarp pump boiler.

It’s also an important snapshot of what the local natural vegetation was like before the Red Cliffs area was cleared to make way for the irrigated settlement in 1920. The reserve is part of the Murray River Parklands, a series of reserves protecting natural and cultural attractions along the river’s edge. The reserves are linked by the majestic Murray and feature towering River Red Gums and tranquil riverside settings. The Red Cliffs lookout is located in Pumps Road, near the entrance to the Red Cliffs pumping station, 4km from the town. Car parking is available at Redgum Gully car park. There are signs from the Calder Highway directing visitors to the lookout – just don’t forget to bring your camera along, and a pair of comfortable walking shoes. Lake provides perfect playground Lake Cullulleraine Walking Trails Lake Cullulleraine

STRETCH your legs with a walk or cycle about Lake Cullulleraine, located an easy 30-minute drive from Mildura on the Sturt Highway toward the South Australian border. There’s two trails to choose from: the Goonegul Parish Trail, from the Latji Latji language meaning Goonegul, flat plains, and Parish, water; and the Helsey Trail, named after Bill Helsey and his wife, early settlers from the 1940s who lived and worked on the north side of the lake. Goonegul Parish trail is 10.4km in length, but a short cut brings it back to 8.6km, while the Helsey trail is 4.3km, from the Bushman’s Rest Caravan Park to the pedestrian bridge that spans the channel carrying water into the lake from the Murray (you can either walk back the 4.3km or continue along the Goonegul Parish track). Lake Cullulleraine offers visitors a peaceful water-side retreat surrounded by significant fauna species and abundant flora. The growling grass frog and regent parrot, nationally threatened species, have been sighted there, along with the whiskered tern, eastern gray egret, gray falcon, apostle bird and gull-billed tern. The area is also home to the fat-tailed dunnart,

bandy bandy and fish species such as Murray cod, golden perch and silver perch. Walking around the lake visitors can admire black box trees, ruby saltbush, black bluebush, desert glasswort and moonah. There is evidence of past Aboriginal occupation in the local area in the form of shell middens, surface scatterings and scar trees in the old growth vegetation close to the river. There are also burial sites in the local area. Visitors making the trek are urged to carry water, wear a hat and sunscreen, and take their rubbish with them. Pets are welcome, but must

be kept under control at all times. As well as the walking tracks, Lake Cullulleraine boasts water sports, such as sailing, skiing, canoeing and fishing, and is a gateway to other places of interest such as Lock 9, Meringur Pioneer Village and the Mandella trail. It is also close to the Murray Sunset National Park. One of just three remaining townships in the Millewa, a designated farming area, Lake Cullulleraine was established by about 800 farmers in the 1920s under a government land scheme.

Stories of the land Mungo National Park Mungo

ONE of the country’s most important archaeological sites, Mungo National Park lets you walk in the footsteps of Aboriginal people whose connection with the land stretches back over 40,000 years. Located 110 kilometres north east of Mildura, you will be blown away by the vastness of the land, its exceptional heritage and continuing importance. Mungo was the site where the world’s oldest human cremation Mungo Woman, was unearthed along with human footprints dating back to the last ice age. All of these discoveries tell an incredible story about the long history of Australian Aboriginal people. The park is within the Willandra Lakes Region World Heritage Area which is one of the few listings in Australia for both natural and cultural features. A visit to Mungo is a fantastic way to see how the elements and climatic changes

since the last ice age have changed the geography. One of the most astonishing features of Mungo National Park is its lunette. Erosion has sculptured the layers of sand and silt deposited over tens of thousands of years, and created a majestic lunar landscape. Mungo can be enjoyed as a day trip or you can take time to immerse yourself in this semi arid landscape. You can camp at one of two campgrounds or stay in the very comfortable Mungo Shearers’ Quarters. Just outside the park is accommodation at Mungo Lodge, where meals are also available. Your first stop at Mungo should be the Visitor Centre and Meeting Place. Here, you can find out all you need to know about Mungo NP and the Willandra Lakes. The National Park’s Discovery Tours start at the Centre, they are a great way to learn about this fascinating place and have some of the hidden features of the Walls of China revealed. The tours are led by an Aboriginal ranger from one of the Ngyiampaa, Mutthi Mutthi or

Wall of China tour with Tania Charles ranger Ian Anderson (03) 9489 4131 Kaye Phillips (03) 5464 1944

Barkindtji/Paakantyi tribal groups are conducted on weekends throughout the year and daily during school holiday periods. Commercial tour operators also take tours to Mungo NP and provide guided access to the Mungo lunette. The park has self-guided walking, cycling and driving tours. There are also picnic spots and lookouts that will leave you spellbound. The Mungo and Zanci Shearing sheds are well worth visiting. You will need your own transport for the tag-along tour to the Walls of China, spectacular etched dunes you will definitely want to get a photograph of. You will also need

to bring along sturdy footwear, drinks, cameras, binoculars, sunscreen and hats. The drive to Mungo National Park from Mildura travels northeast on 20 kilometres of sealed and 88 kilometres of unsealed roads. To check road conditions phone (03) 5027 5040. ONE of the region’s most important sites, the Murray Darling Junction is a great place to enjoy a picnic and soak up some scenery and history. Where the Darling and the Murray rivers meet is also where Captain Charles Sturt gave the Murray River its name in 1830. Prior to European settlement though, it was an important meeting place for Aboriginal tribes in the area who used it for trading, meetings and corroborees.

Once it had been settled, a path was established along the Murray to South Australia that became a well-used route for drovers heading to the markets located in Adelaide. A camp was set up at the junction that took shape becoming the Port of Wentworth - the largest inland port in Australia that served as many as 400 riverboats carrying goods along the Murray and Darling. It might not be as busy today, but it’s certainly a fantastic spot to relax.

Sands of time

Perry Sandhills Wentworth

A FANTASTIC way to truly appreciate the unique landscape that Sunraysia has to offer is at Perry Sandhills, a location that offers an experience you and your family will never forget. Geologists claim the sandhills originated after an ice age 40,000

years ago and were formed by wind erosion over thousands of years. The dunes are a unique formation of 333 hectares of continuously shifting sand dunes. Aboriginal tribes used the area to camp and hunt, and evidence of this is still being uncovered as the sands continue to shift. Skeletons of mega-fauna like

kangaroos, emus and wombats have been found there and replicas are now on show at Wentworth’s Pioneer Museum. You can park in the carpark at the northern entrance and climb over the dunes to see the stunning River Red Gum which has been covered by sand, allowing visitors to walk among its canopy. During World War II, the

sandhills were used as a bombing range. These days, its uses are much different. It’s hosted live music acts including Paul Kelly, and it’s been the backdrop for many films, television shows, ads. Perry Sandhills is about 6km from the Wentworth Post Office, partly on dirt roads.

TAKE a day to explore one of Sunraysia’s most stunning attractions, the Australian Inland Botanic Gardens and you will not be disappointed. It boasts an amazing collection of plants from around the world, which are displayed geographically and are grouped by continent, country or region of origin. The Australian collection of plants are organised by state. Among these features are plants from the dry interior of the country where rainfall averages less than 250 mm a year. When you take a visit to the Gardens you can walk the nature trails to learn more about local plants and afterwards you can enjoy a cup of tea and browse the souvenirs in the Garnpang Homestead. The initial idea for the inland botanic gardens was sparked by

local CSIRO horticultural scientists more than 50 years ago. The idea gained momentum in the 1980s, the site was selected and the first plantings were carried out in 1991. Since those early days, the Gardens, which is run by passionate volunteers, has moved ahead in leaps and bounds. The historic Garnpang Homestead building was transported to the site and restored by volunteers. While Magenta in the Gardens, a relocated and restored shearing shed made from Murray Pine posts is now a popular function centre for events such as weddings. Brekky Saturday is held on the fourth Saturday of the month so you can enjoy a delicious gourmet breakfast made from local produce. There is also a train tour ride every Saturday. The Australian Inland Botanic Gardens are located on River Road, Buronga. The gates are open 8am to 4.30pm weekdays and 10am to 4pm on weekends.

Self-Guided Tours

Colonial heritage comes to life National Trust Heritage Drive Trail Wentworth

THE historic Port of Wentworth has much to offer visitors, especially those keen to learn more about the town’s colonial beginnings. The best way to explore the past is by following the Wentworth Branch of the National Trust’s Heritage Drive Trail that visits 32 places of interest in and about Wentworth. The first stop is the Wentworth Shire Council’s Visitor Information Centre, located in Darling Street, where copies of the trail route can be collected. Among the spots listed is the Wentworth Post Office, rebuilt in 1899. The building was considered one of the most prominent structures in town and today provides a fine example of Wentworth’s prosperous history. Rendlesham House, built in 1882,

was built for the town’s first mayor, and later housed other important and memorable pioneers. The building has been previously used as a restaurant and tea rooms. The Ink Berry Tree is another spot of interest on the trail. The South American specimen was planted many years ago by a South Australian man, who also planted the same species in Moama, Balranald and Hay. The motivation for his actions is unknown to this day. Wentworth Wharf, pictured, is another historic landmark that must be seen. Originally built in 1879 using local timber, it was the third busiest port in Australia behind Sydney and Newcastle at one point. The original wharf structure deteriorated and was demolished in 1983. A replica now stands in its place. Other spots of interest on the trail include the Customs House, River Murray Trading Company, The Commercial Hotel, Royal

Hotel, the Town Hall and various local churches, the Murray and Darling rivers junction, the Wentworth Cemetery, Old Wentworth Gaol, Pioneer World Museum, Perry Sandhills and Wentworth Brickworks. The trail also passes the

monument to the Ferguson Tractor, honouring the part the machine played in building massive levee banks that protected the town from the 1956 floods. For more information about the trail visit the visitor information centre or call 5027 5080.

SUNRAYSIA’S hot climate makes a leisurely self-guided tour on foot the perfect way to relax, and spend an afternoon exploring Mildura’s rich Art Deco architecture. Art Deco is described as an architecture style that features “linear decorative designs, reminiscent of modernising technology emphasising long, thin forms, curved surfaces and geometric patterns”. The best examples can be found in and about the city centre and include: The interior of The Mildura Brewery, 20-22 Langtree Avenue. The Mildura Brewery and bar has been incorporated into the former Astor Theatre. Key style indicators of line, form and colour have been retained. The former Capitol Theatre, 39 Langtree Avenue, which was built about 1935-38 and uses a typical Art Deco chevron pattern.

The former Commercial Bank of Australia, 45 Langtree Avenue, (now the Sandbar), was built in 1932 and features decorative brick work. Etherington the Jewellers, built in 1932 boasts an Art Deco shop front and interior that remains largely intact. The T&G Tower is a Mildura icon and was built in the 1920s.The symmetrical stepped detailing to the walls and top section of the clock tower are a classic Art Deco feature. There are many other examples of this style of architecture across town, from the former Mildura Base Hospital to a private residence. Merbein, Red Cliffs, Ouyen, Dareton and Wentworth, too, have sites included in the tour for those keen to check out more Art Deco buildings. To pick up a Mildura Art Deco Walking Tour brochure visit the Mildura Visitor Information and Booking Centre, 180-190 Deakin Avenue, Mildura.

The tour takes in nine sites, and there is no need for you to finish it all in one go.You can break it up over a few days, as you investigate other points of interest in the area. Before you head off on your journey, stop in to the Mildura Visitor Information and Booking Centre, where you can watch a free short film about the Chaffey brothers who designed Mildura’s irrigation system and established the area as one of Australia’s most important producers of food. You can also ask the staff about opening times and admission for the stops along the tour. The Mildura Visitor Information and Booking Centre is located at 180-190 Deakin Avenue, Mildura. ends and public holidays, 9am to 5pm; and Anzac Day, noon to 5pm. For more information call 5018 8380 The Chaffey Trail: 1. The Old Mildura Homestead, Cureton Avenue. First stop is the site of the original pastoral lease and station established by the Jamieson brothers in 1847. Arts Scene

Bold new future and history side by side Mildura Arts Centre and Rio Vista House Cureton Avenue, Mildura

FOR almost half a century, Mildura Arts Centre has been the creative and cultural hub of North West Victoria. We are experiencing a new era in Sunraysia’s rich artistic heritage with an impressive proscenium theatre, exciting gallery exhibitions, and upcoming array of bold and inventive arts programming. From the minute you walk across the sprawling lawns and sculpture gardens of Rio Vista Historic House, it is clear that Mildura Arts Centre has something special to offer. Step inside the $8.7 million performing arts venue, view exhibitions from the impressive permanent collection, or go back in time with a tour of the community’s heritage house. Discover a remarkable cultural precinct just a few blocks away from Mildura’s town centre. There at 199 Cureton Avenue, you will find Mildura Arts Cen-

tre’s creative team planning exciting arts events for the year ahead. Check the calendar for upcoming live theatre, music and dance, and discover innovative projects like the Art-o-mat machine, artist residencies, and 21st century collaborations. Together, they are continuing Mildura’s great tradition of nurturing local talent, supporting the creative process, and cultivating the expression of sense of place. Just a stone’s throw from the banks of the Murray River, the arts centre is owned and operated by Mildura Rural City Council. The lawns and sculpture garden outside provide visitors with a unique connection to the former Mildura Sculpture Triennials (and the ground-breaking contemporary art that was presented between 1961 and 1988). Many of the stunning sculptural works can now be found on the arts centre grounds, and at sites throughout town. The stately Rio Vista Historic House, former home of town

founder W. B. Chaffey, is the first discovery waiting to be made. Construction began on the grand building in 1889, and William Chaffey lived at Rio Vista until his death in 1926. When his widow, Hattie passed away in 1950, the Council acquired the grand property with the intention of developing it as a regional art gallery. MANY people come to Sunraysia for a spot of fishing and the lure of hooking a Murray Cod. There’s golden perch, redfin, silver perch, freshwater catfish and European carp, too, for the catching. And whether it’s dropping a line over the side of a tinnie or casting from the bank, the Murray and Darling rivers are perfect for recreational fishers. But we’re spoilt for choice in these parts, with many other great fishing spots across the district, from Kings Billabong to Lake Cullulleraine. Just don’t forget your fishing licence: you’ll need a Victorian Recreational Fishing Licence (RFL) for Victorian waters or a Freshwater Fishing Licence to fish in NSW (which includes the Murray River). In Victoria, you won’t need a fishing licence if you’re under 18, aged over 70 or hold particular benefit cards.

A three-year RFL can be purchased for $66 or an annual RFL costs $24.50. A 28-day RFL is $12 or a two-day one will set you back $6.RFLs can be purchased from Department of Primary Industries’ offices and more than 980 retailers across the state, including most retail fishing tackle stores. The NSW Freshwater Fishing Licence can be purchased from an agent or online and costs $85 for three years, $35 for one year, $14 for one month, or $7 for three days. People under 18 are not required to have a licence and other exemptions also apply. Visit www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fisheries/recreational for more information.
