How they met: Alex was a senior in high school and I was a sophomore; we were both participating in track and field when we were introduced,” said Camille. The couple found common ground in their beliefs and lifestyles. “He was definitely a cutie and that didn’t hurt either,” she said.
The wedding date: We both wanted a summer wedding and with graduate school about to start at the end of August we wanted enough time to settle in and honeymoon,” she said. The feel of their wedding was rustic and romantic. The couple was married on July 25, 2015.

Advice from the couple:
“Planning a wedding is such a fun and exciting time of your life, but there is so much more. We were fortunate enough to have premarital counseling from our pastor, Rodd Lowell. Spend time preparing for the part that will last!” — Camille & Alex

Alyssa started the planning process with Aaron. First off they chose the date of the wedding, July 26, 2014. They chose that date for multiple reasons. “I knew all of my friends would be off of school for the summer,” She said. “(Aaron) worked with the Forest Service at that time, so it just worked with everybody’s schedule. And for anniversary reasons; it’s way more fun to go off in the summer than the winter.” The wedding had a country, rustic, vintage theme, she said. They had their wedding at the Woodland Sanctuary in Mio because it matched the feel they were going for, and the size of the guest list. “He has a huge family,” Alyssa said. “It was the place around, local, big enough to hold everybody,” Going along with the theme, Alyssa had her bridesmaids, who were dressed in shades of purple, wear boots to bring out the country theme. “Got to have the boots,” she said. Alyssa’s bouquet was not only tasteful but fit her budget. The arrangement was from Genevieve’s in Mio. “I said, ‘I have an extra $30; I want a wildflower-looking bouquet with purples and pinks,’ and she created it,” Alyssa said. The morning before the wedding consisted of a girls’ day, Alyssa said. She spent the night at a friend’s house, Aaron’s aunt Sandy did her hair and a friend did her makeup. “It was definitely a close-knit thing,” she said. The dress was all lace. Alyssa went to stores to try on different styles but in the end purchased her dress elsewhere because her goal was to stay within her wedding budget. As for the groom and his groomsmen, they decided on touches of camouflage, but the wedding had primarily purples. Not only did the couple cover most of the costs of the wedding, but they also incorporated do-it-yourself touches to save money, with help from family and friends, of course. Whether it was details of the ceremony, sewing adjustments to Alyssa’s dress or the food, the couple had no shortage of helpful hands on deck. Alyssa’s mom, dad and a friend made the arbor that adorned the front of the Whites’ ceremony. “A friend donated his elk antlers, so it really got the country theme,” Alyssa said.

When you know, you know. This statement is precisely what Aaron and Alyssa White knew in their hearts when they began dating. “We got engaged pretty fast. I knew who he was from growing up,” said Alyssa. After deciding they should be together, the couple embarked on their engagement period only five months after they started dating. Aaron proposed to Alyssa while they were out mudding. Telling her they were stuck, he coaxed her out of the truck. “Then when I came around, and he was on one knee,” Alyssa said. The engagement period, which was a year and a half, lasted a little longer to allow time to save money and plan, she said. We actually paid for the majority of, if not almost all of it ourselves,” she said. “Why have this gorgeous wedding and then have this huge bill afterward?,” Alyssa said. “It (would) make it a little sour.” The length of their engagement also allowed Alyssa to find the most sensible deals. “It was more of where can I get a best price for everything, more of shopping around for what I wanted,” Alyssa said. The bride was still able to pursue what she pictured her wedding would be like. “From a little girl, you always picture your wedding, how you want your wedding, so I had a pretty good idea,” she said. Of all the places to meet, Jason and Stacey Thibault met at a wedding. Jason’s cousin was getting married, and little did Jason know, he was next. Stacey was there as a mutual friend to the bride and groom. The two danced the night away and enjoyed each other’s company. “It was relaxed and fun,” she said. Jason made his move by calling Stacey after the wedding. Both Jason and Stacey had been married before, and they found a connection with their common circumstances. “We had the same outlook on our divorces,” Stacey said. The couple had the same views on the importance of the children they each had. They wanted to make sure their kids were heard and taken care of in the relationship. Stacey said that was one of the reasons she was drawn to Jason. “He liked being around kids; that helped,” she said. The couple was engaged in March 2014. Before Jason popped the question, he let Stacey choose three styles of ring, then had one made. He kept her on her toes by letting her know he had the ring but not disclosing the time and place he would ambush her. “Jason tortured me for a month, telling me he had it at the house. One night he was on his knee, both knees actually. That’s Jason,” Stacey said with a laugh. Being a little older than the typical 20-

somethings, the couple wanted to include most of if not all of their family and friends in the big day but also have a simple celebration that provided a bond for both them and their children. “He is very, very sweet and thoughtful,” she said. The couple was wed Aug. 29, 2015. The venue was near their house in Standish, which is surrounded by farmland owned by a family member who offered space for everything. “We used a barn as a backdrop, just simple,” Stacey said. The theme was a rustic one with some of her favorite colors; they used lots of Mason jars and burlap to add to the theme. Yellow and white adorned the ceremony space, from the bridesmaid dresses to the flowers seen throughout the wedding. “Yellow makes me happy,” she said. A longtime friend, Gail Revord, also of Au Gres, arranged the flowers. Not only were there flowers to be arranged for the bouquets and boutonnieres but also for the table settings. “We used silk flowers from Tawas Hardware actually,” Stacey said. “They ordered them in bulk for me.” Gail had experience in the floral industry from a previous flower shop in Au Gres, called Petal Junction. She came out of retirement for this occasion. “It was just a beautiful wedding,” Gail said. The ceremony was short to make way for the reception, which was a simple and fun affair. “In fact, we had ‘Backyard Bash’ written on our invitations,” Stacey said. The music for the Thibault wedding was split between a DJ and a band from Omer, the Omer City Limits Band. “We both wanted a band and a DJ,” she said. Jason and Stacey gave the musicians ideas of what songs they wanted but let them run with it, Stacey said. When the band wasn’t playing, it was the DJ’s turn. They shared the time like this throughout the night. The couple took the stress of the wedding with a grain of salt. They made the most of their day by working together and compromising with each other on details about the wedding. “We didn’t sweat the small stuff,” Stacey said. The couple wanted to treat their wedding day how they hope their marriage will continue to be: simple but sacred.

FROM PAGE 3 The mother of the bride added purple vinery to the arbor to tie in with what her daughter had in mind. “It wasn’t much, but it just gave it that extra something,” she said. The couple saved money even down to the rings. Aaron’s ring is from eBay, Alyssa said. “He is a very low-maintenance man,” she said. And for her ring set, they bought a less-expensive band for the ceremony and purchased the diamond ring after they were married. “I just got it this year. I think it looks so much better, the whole set all together,” she said. The ceremony was more on the short side but was deep with meaning. “Cody Gascho was our pastor,” Alyssa said. “He met with us a couple times for marriage counseling and he asked us, ‘What do you want your ceremony to be based on?, and I said, ‘Family.’” The focus of the short, yet sweet ceremony was the fact that two families were becoming one. “It was very, very family-orientated,

Quality photography a must which is how we wanted the whole thing,” she said. The reception had 300 people at the Woodland lodge and the area outside of the building. The bride and groom had a DJ for their music. Alyssa gave him a list of songs they wanted played, and he really did a nice job of not stealing the show, Alyssa said. “People said that the wedding was ‘so us,’ Alyssa said. “It had good flow and the food was amazing.” The couple wanted to make sure the day was perfect not only for themselves but also for their family and friends. “It’s my big day, but I also wanted everybody else to have fun and enjoy it too, she said. “If they’re going to come all this way, at least give them a good meal and music to dance to.” When they were first in the planning process for the wedding, the couple made it a necessity to find what they wanted but stay within their budget. “Figure out what your vision is and then shop around to get the best deal. Our biggest thing was we didn’t want to go into debt,” she said.

Hale
Lauren Miller spent her summers as a young girl in Hale at her grandparents’ cabin. Though she and her family moved to Chicago, they still return to Hale, especially for the weekends and the fourth of July, Miller said. After going to college in Chicago, Miller put her degree to use and now has a photography business called Liller Photo based out of her new home in Milwaukee, Wis. Most people have photos taken during all occasions: birthdays, graduations and of course weddings. Having quality photographs taken at a wedding is one of the things people may skimp on for financial reasons, but it is a
must. “I think it’s very important because the details go away very quickly. If you don’t have the photos you can’t look back,” said Miller. As a professional photographer she stresses the importance of quality photos for not only weddings but engagements too. “I am a big advocate of engagement sessions,” said Miller. When you are looking for photographers there are some things to consider, she said. “You want someone who is ready for anything and is willing to think outside the box,” Miller said.

Starting a new job can be daunting, but what if the person you were meant to marry shared the same place of employment? That is precisely the case when it comes to the newlywed couple, Kyle and Jessica Hartley. Jessica grew up in West Branch and still has ties to the area. “My family is all there so I am up there quite often,” Jessica said. “It is a place that still means a lot to me.” She and Kyle started dating soon after meeting at work, and as time went on, Kyle popped the question during a day spent doing what they both enjoy. The day was June 22, 2014. They had made plans to go fishing. After making their way to a pond by their home, the couple started setting up their poles and lines. “Kyle asked me to grab something for him out of the tackle box and in the draw-
er was the ring box, and when I turned around he was on his knee proposing to me,” Jessica said. Jessica said yes, of course, and they started celebrating with family and friends. After the initial excitement settled, the couple found themselves indecisive on what kind of wedding they wanted and on what day. They ended up choosing Aug. 8, 2015, for their wedding day. “We couldn’t decide if we wanted to have it out of state or elope or have it home,” she said. “Once we finally decided to have it home we went with that date because it is my grandmother’s birthday and her and I are very close, and we thought that would be something nice to share,” The wedding had a classy romantic theme, said Jessica. “We had a lot of lights and candles at the reception with the lights low, she said. “The ceremony was more rustic: it was held in the woods at my grandparents’ home.” The couple as well as family and friends brought the elements of the wedding together. Whether it was flowers being transported by bridesmaids or food options being cooked by a family member, they brought their families together for the special day. Another way they incorporated their family ties was a unique “flower ceremony” during the overall ceremony. “We had an empty vase up front and asked each family member to bring a rose up and place it in the vase while a poem was being read,” she said. After all the white roses were added to the vase, the bride and groom each placed a rose as well, creating a beautiful bouquet, Jessica recalled. The couple kept in mind romance and class when they planned the reception. The music choices reflected that as well, Jessica said.

It’s all in a name Lauryn & Taylor Miller
When Taylor Miller of West Branch decided to attend Taylor University in Indiana, he didn’t know that his future wife, originally from the Chicago area, had aspirations to go to the same college. Meeting initially on the Taylor University Facebook page, the couple found a connection that would lead them to their marriage in the summer of 2015. Being in the same orientation group for their freshman year, their paths kept crossing and before they knew it, the time they spent dating shifted into being engaged. Taylor and Lauryn were engaged Aug. 8, 2014. “When Taylor proposed it came as a complete surprise,” Lauryn said. The day started out with errands and normal, mundane events for the two and Lauryn’s sister, Katie. As the couple made their way through the day, they came across a distracting sculpture, Lauryn said. “There was this massive American flag statue,” Lauryn recalled. “My sister freaked out because Taylor was wearing a flag shirt and she thought it would be

hilarious to get a picture of him with the flag,” Being the day after a long night, Lauryn was not enthused about taking a photo. “I had been to a Katy Perry concert the night before so I really wanted to take a nap instead, but I agreed that we should get the picture,” she said. Once they were ready for the picture, Taylor turned to Lauryn with a gift and told her to open it. “I started freaking out,” Lauryn said. The gift was a leather-bound Bible. Their faith is something they have built their relationship on, she said. The Bible was bookmarked in places for Taylor to read to Lauryn before getting to the final spot where a ring was waiting for her. “He then handed me the Bible so I could read I Corinthians 13, the love chapter. The ring was tied to the bookmark that marked that page, so I had a little trouble concentrating. Taylor then untied the ring, got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife. I barely let him finish before I said yes,” Lauryn said.

Taylor and Lauryn were engaged for little more than a year before getting married on Aug. 1, 2015. With the budget in mind, the couple had previously booked a venue on a Friday night, which was less expensive. “We originally chose July 31, and had a venue booked. Then a family from our church offered their private barn to us to use for our wedding,” Lauryn said. The theme for their wedding was romantic, whimsical and rustic. Taylor
and Lauryn wanted their wedding to incorporate all that they love, and that included family and friends. Taylor’s grandmother, Beth Peszko, was especially involved in the overall look of the Miller wedding. Having a flower shop in West Branch called Edith M’s, she offered her knowledge of the floral world. “I did not choose my flowers except for

Quickly falling, Quigleys still head over heels in love Rose & Les Quigley
Les and Rose Quigley met in English class in 1956 at Ogemaw Heights High School. They became close and started dating a year later as sophomores. “We were together 10th, 11th and 12th grades off and on,” said Rose. They remember the night they started their journey together. “The fall of 1957 is when we started dating,” said Les. “Yes, during a football game,” Rose added. They were engaged soon after graduation from high school in 1961. “The summer of 1961 is when you asked me to marry you,” Rose said, looking at Les. When Les proposed to Rose during that summer, Rose was taken aback by the question. “I just didn’t think he was serious,” Rose said with laughter. She recalls laughing nervously and then, upon hearing that Les was serious, accepting. He proposed while bringing Rose home from a date.
STORY BY TIFFANY JOHNSON
“I don’t remember exactly how you said it, but it was something like, ‘I think we should get married,’ said Rose. Les remembers a similar question. “I probably said, ‘Will you marry me?’” Les said. Les went into the Air Force right around the time they were married. Les could not get leave from the base, so they were married where he was stationed at the time in Biloxi, Miss., Feb. 20, 1962. “That was also the day that John Glenn went in orbit, and we listened to that, my mom and I, on the radio while we were getting ready to go to the base,” said Rose. Les would be in the military for their first seven years. The Quigleys will celebrate their 54th wedding anniversary in February this year. After being married for such a long time, they have learned a lot about each other. When asked what she loves about her husband, Rose had a hard time narrowing it down to just one thing. “He’s just a loving, caring husband,
always has been,” said Rose. Les spoke of one of the reasons he and Rose work so well together. “I think, we just share so many things together; we like the same things,” said Les. The pair cites their dating as young people as one of the reasons their marriage worked out so well. “I think we got all the disruptions out the three years we dated in high school; that time we knew each other pretty
good,” Rose said playfully. The secret to their happy marriage has been their willingness to give and take, said Rose. “Sometimes you say sorry when you’re not really the one who has to say sorry,” she said. “I would agree with that,” said Les. Both Les and Rose said they were, in

Amanda Baker and Justin Chamthene
It has been a long time coming for these two Arenac County lovebirds. First meeting at Au Gres-Sims High School during Amanda’s senior year, they instantly fell in love. “We had been dating for nine years before we got engaged,” said Amanda. After being consistently together for that amount of time, the couple decided it was time to take the next step. “We were looking for rings for three months,” said Amanda. “We picked it out and I knew he got the ring,” Knowing Justin had the ring in his possession, Amanda found herself on edge with the excitement of the situation. Justin came home to her one day and got down on one knee and proposed, she said.
Hartley: FROM PAGE 6
“We are both into outdoorsy things, like fishing and hunting,” said Amanda. For their engagement photos, they used a fishing hook to display Amanda’s ring, which is double-banded with a hollowed diamond. The laidback couple has chosen to have their wedding in Gladwin at Lost Arrow Resort. The resort has areas that cater to the couple’s simple outlook on life, including a log cabin used for such celebrations. “We wanted small and quaint,” Amanda said. The venue fits nicely with their rustic theme. Their colors will be charcoal gray and orange. They hope the colors will accent an October wedding well, she said.
“We wanted to keep people entertained while they were there,” she said. Welcoming advice and input from family members, the couple found themselves with too many options, so they decided that the day was ultimately theirs. “Even though they mean well, in the end it is your day and what you want is really all that matters,” Jessica said. The stress that can come along with planning a wedding can send even the most organized brides off the path. Letting the stress get to you can only hinder your happy day. “Even through the stress and everything that goes into planning a wedding, our day turned out to be absolutely beautiful and perfect to us, and we could not have been happier,” she said.

a way, forced to work out their problems together because they were stationed in Biloxi during the first months of their marriage. “We couldn’t run home to mommy, so that had a lot to do with it,” she said. “The first 10 months of our marriage, it was a 1,500-mile trip to run home to momma,” said Les. They agreed that these circumstances brought them closer together and are why they have remained so. During his service, Les was also sent to Utupao, Thailand, which put some stress on their fresh marriage. “During the Vietnam difficulty I was in Thailand,” said Les. The couple would write letters and record messages for each other on tapes on a reel. “I could talk on it, and our 1-year-old could talk — well, he was barely but he could talk — and then (Les) would send back (messages) also like that,” said Rose. Rose also received pictures and slides from Les in the mail. She would have
slide show parties with family, she said. “Those were the days before Facebook or any of the internet,” Les said. Though there were ways to communicate back and forth, the Quigleys went through times when the mail was delayed for weeks at a time. Because of the lack of a ham radio close to Les while he was in Thailand, the couple did not have the opportunity to make phone calls to each other. Looking back, the couple, Rose especially, was grateful for the constant help of family. “That was very difficult. We had a 1 1/2-year-old but I moved up here (to West Branch) in his mom and dad’s yard in our mobile home. Yeah, that was tough, but I had lots of family to help,” said Rose. Spending a year apart while Les was overseas was hard for the couple. “People that cope with that have all my respect,” said Les. These days, Les and Rose enjoy life in West Branch, being involved in the community at the Commission on Aging
center. The couple stays active in events like bingo, for which Les is a caller on some occasions. Les said his grandparents gave them some advice the first time they met Rose. At the time his grandparents had been married well over 50 years.
“I was not an adult when their 50th anniversary came around,” he said, putting into perspective how long it seemed. The advice, the best they received about marriage, was, “Never go to bed mad at each other,” said Rose.

the colors,” Lauryn said. “Taylor’s grandma knew exactly what would look best.” Taking into account the feel and look Lauryn and Taylor wanted, Beth put together flowers that incorporated white and green. “I wanted the flowers to be whimsical and very natural,” Lauryn said. What the bride and groom would call the most important part of their day, the ceremony, was somewhat long, Lauryn said. The couple included a unique event during the ceremony. “Our pastor spoke on ‘serving’ in marriage, so we decided to do a foot washing ceremony as our first act of service to each other as husband and wife,” Lauryn said. The ceremony took place in the friend’s barn, and then the barn was transformed into the reception space. During dinner, they played soft jazz music. The food they decided on was pizza from a Chicago pizzeria, Lou Malnati’s. “We wanted to stay away from anything that is typically served at a wedding,” she said.
Being a fun-loving couple, Taylor and Lauryn chose music for the reception based on what has been popular throughout the years, said Lauryn. She wanted people to feel nostalgic with songs from the past while mixing in some current tunes. “The dance floor did not die out until the wedding was over,” she said. It was also important to them to have great photographs of their day to remember it by. While scanning Instagram, Taylor found a picture of Whittemore Speedway, which he was familiar with, being from Ogemaw County. The couple decided to use the person who took the photo, Lauren Miller of Liller Photo, as their wedding photographer. While photographs were an important part that the couple will cherish as they look back, Taylor and Lauryn chose to have a futuristic mindset. “The day comes and goes so fast,” Lauryn said. “Focus on what will happen after the wedding day — the marriage. Enjoy every single moment, and soak it all in. Have fun and celebrate!”

Tyler Bolduc & Keonna Watkins
He was from Muskegon and she was from West Branch. These two lovebirds met while attending Ferris State University in 2007. Their story is the classic girl-next-door type. They had shared a residence hall and, having the same friends and some of the same classes, they
quickly bonded. After dating for six years, Keonna Watkins and Tyler Bolduc were engaged. “Since my birthday and our (dating) anniversary are days apart, Tyler planned a weekend of events,” said Keonna. Tyler, knowing Keonna enjoyed ice skating, rented out a rink after hours so they could have the spot to themselves. The night included a playlist of her favorite songs, a slideshow and one final birthday present, a proposal. “He gave me one of the most beautiful speeches. I can’t remember it for the life of me. I was in total shock,” Keonna remembered. “The fact that he was able to totally catch me off guard made it that much more special.” The couple has plans to wed on May 16, 2016, in Grand Rapids.

Amber Mosher & Kory Ketelhut
You may have heard this one before: she was his waitress, and they fell in love at first sight. No, it’s not the plot of a common chick flick, but the true love story of Amber and Kory. “His pretty blue eyes” is what bride-to-be Amber Mosher said in regard to the reason Kory Ketelhut caught her eye at her work that evening. Being a 2007 graduate of Fairview Area Schools and having family in the area, Amber has a strong connection with Oscoda County. Amber moved downstate and went to college at Baker College of Owosso, finding work in that city as well. That is where she found her future husband. Now living downstate, Amber is excited that she is now engaged to her sweetheart. “We went on a bunch of dates and before I knew it, we were dating,” Amber said. The couple dated for about two years when they decided to buy a house in Shelby Township. They were then engaged.
“It was longer than I wanted, a couple years later,” said Amber. Kory proposed in the same setting in which the couple met, a restaurant. “We were having ice cream, then he popped the question,” Amber recalled. During their night, Kory asked the waitress to take a picture of them at their table. While Amber was busy posing for the photo he lifted the ring up so it would be visible in the photo. When the taker of the photo saw the ring, her face said it all. “The waitress kind of gave it away,” she said with a laugh. The couple has planned a fall wedding for Oct. 14, 2016, which is their sixth anniversary of dating. “He was very adamant: he only wanted to remember one day,” she said. The groom enjoys the video game “Portal,” so they are incorporating that theme into their fall wedding, Amber said.
