Spring Sports Guide

About our cover For the 2016-17 spring sports season, we continued with the idea of having one guide for all three counties — Arenac, Ogemaw and Oscoda — highlighting seven student athletes who could represent their school with sportsmanship and passion. In early March the student athletes gathered at the Standish-Sterling Central Field House for a photo shoot. We would like to thank all the students — Garrett

With plenty of returning players, the Au Gres-Sims baseball team has its sights set high — a league title. “If we come out and play strong right from the get-go, I think this is a team that can compete for the NSL Little Dipper title,” coach Troy Saunders said. “We want to try to push for a district title, too,” he said. Saunders said he only lost two players to graduation from last year’s team, and that many key players are

coming back, including seniors Cade Steelman, Kody Gordon, Connor Kubik and Cole Norton. Kamryn Gordon and Caden Zeien, two of the Wolverines’ top pitchers, are also back this year. Kamryn Gordon and Zeien, along with Trevor Jamroz, are expected to set the tone at the plate. Saunders said Jamroz, who will join the team once a thumb injury heals, can be depended upon to get on base a lot. Newcomer Ben Salgat is also looking solid at the plate, Saunders said. Overall, batting and defense will be AGS’ strength, according to Saunders.

However, more pitching depth is needed. “There’s a new pitching rule, so we need a few extra pitchers now,” he said. “In previous years, they’ve gone 30 outs and two days’ rest, now it’s 105 pitches and three days’ rest. You could potentially eat pitchers up really fast.” Going into the season, Saunders said to earn the league title, he expects tough competition from Hale and Posen. AGS is scheduled to travel to Michigan Lutheran Seminary in Saginaw April 4 for its first game of the season.

Hale Baseball

By Nick Powers news@oscodaherald.com 989-387-9295

The Hale Eagles have their sights set on winning the North Star League Little Dipper, according to coach Ben Murphy, who has coached the team for six years. “It’s going to be a tight race so every game is going to be important,” Murphy said. “If we have a few leaders emerge from this group there will be no stopping us.” Murphy said the team, which typically has about 14 players a year, should do well this year with a larger roster. He hopes this will make assigned positions more competitive. “Having over 20 players on the team is something we are not used to, but it is certainly a great problem to have,” Murphy said. In the offseason, the Eagles were getting ready. “We had pretty good participation in the offseason,” he said. “We had a summer league team for the second year in a row and we have

been in the gym hitting and pitching since January.” The team has four returning seniors including Devin Chrivia, Antonio Garnsey, Erick Losinski and Gary Collins. Murphy said any of these veteran players could potentially be a leader on the team, but he doesn’t see a clear standout as of yet. “Leadership is hopefully going to develop in some of the kids,” he said. One of the biggest challenges for the team is the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s changes to its pitching rules for the 2017 season. According to the MHSAA handbook, pitchers cannot pitch three consecutive days, no matter how many outs they get. Pitchers cannot pitch two calendar days following their 30th out. Murphy said this could make things difficult for smaller schools. “Unfortunately the smaller schools kind of take the bigger hit than the big schools,” he said. “But the state doesn’t have that in mind when they make these rules.” However, Murphy said the team

should be able to accommodate this change because of its six pitchers. He hopes Tanner Klein and Joey Weber will lead the team’s pitching effort. Murphy also sees the team standing out in terms of fielding and hitting with the increased number of players. He said the biggest challenge the team will meet is facing off against bigger schools. In the past the team has had a difficult time getting creative when squaring off with strong pitchers. “When we faced some of the better pitchers we struggled to find ways to win,” Murphy said. Trent Riley, who is now a sophomore, is expected to step up this year for the Eagles, according to Murphy. The team will also be getting eight new freshmen players. “The baseball program should be in good shape for the next several seasons,” he said. “Kids may not like their playing time right away but it’s important that they stay positive and keep working hard so that the baseball program can stay strong not only for this year, but for several years to come.”

Mio AuSable Baseball By Nick Powers news@oscodaherald.com 989-387-9295

While the Mio AuSable boys baseball team doesn’t have many senior leaders, coach Ryan Rondo expects the team to fare better than it did the previous year. “We’ve got a good junior class and sophomore class,” he said. Rondo, who has been coaching the team for nine years, said it would be interesting to see how the changes in pitching regulations for the 2017 season will impact teams. In the Michigan High School Athletic Association. handbook, pitchers cannot pitch three consecutive days, no matter how many outs they get. Pitchers cannot pitch two calendar days following their 30th out. Murphy said this could make things difficult for smaller schools. However, Rondo doesn’t think this will negatively impact the team in terms of pitching, despite its 13-player roster. “We don’t have a lot of kids, but the kids that we have are pitchers also,” he said. “I think we have about six.” Pitching is expected to be a strong

suit for the team, according to Rondo. Pitchers for the team include senior Reilly McMaster juniors Garrett Rhoads and Andrew Hager, sophomores Cameron Demory and Ty Rondo and freshman Brendan DeFlorio. Rondo did say the change could have an effect on the team when it has two games a week and a tournament on the weekend. “It’s going to take a lot of coordinating for the coaches,” he said. “Making sure you don’t run yourself out of pitchers.” Rondo summed up the team’s pitching philosophy this way: “Throw strikes, throw them often, keep the ball low and make the teams hit,” he said. In terms of hitting, Rondo said the team is going wait for the good pitches rather than swinging at the early ones. “Don’t swing at the first pitch, watch a pitch or two,” he said. “If you get a two-ball count, make them throw you a strike before you swing. Every pitch is going to make a difference.” Rondo expects the Thunderbolts to be a strong fielding team as well. “As in most years, we’re going to

be a good defensive team,” he said. The team’s biggest weakness is going to be hitting, according to Rondo. “You can have one or two that are good hitters, but the bottom of the lineup always seems to kill us,” he said. McMaster and Garrett Rhoads are expected to be leaders on the team, Rondo said. He also expects big things from Rondo and Demory. Hager, who was only able to play six games last year is also expected to step up. “We’re going to have him the whole season, so that’s huge,” coach Rondo said. One thing that really helped the team over the years was having a Little League team since about 2009, according to Rondo. This helps players learn the fundamentals before they start playing at the high school level. “If you get kids that are playing for five or six years together and at a younger age, you’re not going to have to teach them basics as a freshman,” he said. “That makes a big difference.”

The Ogemaw Heights Falcons baseball team will be hitting the diamond well-seasoned, having no new players this year. Coach Chris Powley said the team lost Caleb Ostrander to graduation. He said Ostrander was a three-year varsity player and great first baseman. Leading the team this year will be Ryan Rivard and Gabe Matteson. “Rivard is a four-year starter on varsity,” Powley said. “The guys are working hard and getting better.” Powley said dedication will drive the team this season. “All players are very dedicated to being the best they can be,” he said.

“Expectations are high for these young men and they believe that this year is going to be theirs.” Powley said a big game this season is the Gift of Life game April 12 at Dow Diamond in Midland, held in memory of beloved Falcon Evan Kimball, who passed away Oct. 12, 2015, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Kimball’s passing left behind a legacy of promoting organ donation, with his organs benefiting dozens, and hundreds of people pledging as organ donors in his honor. “We will be playing Gladwin and bringing awareness about organ donation at that game,” Powley said. “We would love to see our community come out and support Michigan Gift of Life.”

Standish-Sterling will field an experienced baseball team in 2017, and expectations are high, according to first-year coach Ryan Raymond. “Coming off a regional championship, the expectations remain very high,” he said. “Coach Steve Stodolak left a very good foundation and our local youth programs have done a very good job developing talent. It will be a lot of fun seeing how far we can go every year.” Returning to the Panthers this year are seniors Sean O’Keefe, Andrew Wirley and Sam Broughton, and juniors Clay Crouterfield, Jack Robinson and Nolan Raymond. Coach Raymond said two additional juniors, Hunter Nelson and Connor Gordon, also saw limited action on the varsity team last year. With so much experience, coach Raymond said SSC will have strong leadership in 2017, including O’Keefe, who is on varsity for the fourth year, and Crouterfield and Nolan Raymond, who will be on varsity for a third year

this season. “Sean, Clay and Nolan have multiple years of experience playing varsity baseball and they lead by example,” coach Raymond said. “All three work extremely hard and they want to be great. I believe that naturally rubs off on others.” New players SSC expects to make a difference are Cooper Rood, Austin Nichols, Luke Burghardt and Lance Cameron. A new rule change implemented this season will be cause for concern for the Panthers, coach Raymond said. “Overall, the one concern will be the new Michigan High School Athletic Association pitch count rules,” he said. “We will need a lot of players to contribute quality innings. Our

goal is to develop as many players as possible into pitchers. Andrew Wirley, Hunter Nelson, Sam Broughton, Jack Robinson and Connor Gordon will be counted on to help pick up the slack in this area.” The Panthers are looking forward to playing in the Tri-Valley Conference for the first time, coach Raymond said. “All of us are extremely excited to play in the TVC,” he said. “We have had several kids work all winter long to prepare for some very good competition and they are ready.” SSC kicks off its season April 4 at home against Ogemaw Heights. “The players are looking forward to the support of this great community,” Raymond said. “Please check out our schedule and come cheer them on.”

The Whittemore-Prescott Cardinals baseball team intends to pick up where it left off last season, coach Ed Mervyn said. Last season the Cards were second in the North Star League and won the Michigan High School Athletic Association district championship, losing in the first round of regionals. Despite losing Blake Liddell, Joey Stone, Tommy Oliver and Shawn Gaudette to graduation, Mervyn said the experience of the returners and the records of the junior varsity players moving up should result in a solid season. “All four of them were a key part of the team, but we have five returners,” Mervyn said. Returning this year is Shawn Edmonds, Joey Lauria, Shawn Paige, Alex Mervyn and Alex Yorton, who pitched a no-hitter in districts last year. Mervyn said having solid pitchers will be key this year because the MHSAA has initiated a pitch count. Pitchers can throw up to 25 pitches in a day. Beyond that pitchers have an established rest period of one, two or three days depending on the

number of pitches thrown in the game. “The JV team only lost maybe four games last year,” he said. “The team will work well together and I have some of the best pitchers in the league. The kids that are coming up will step right in and help us out.” Beyond the mound, Mervyn said he is looking to his returners behind the bat. “Every one of the returners are sharp at bat,” he said. “They are working on their hand-eye coordination and seeing the ball. The kids have a positive attitude about the season and they are working hard.” Mervyn said he doesn’t give more importance to any game in the schedule over another. “We have a good schedule with some good teams,” he said. “I don’t think we can overlook anyone on the schedule and not play our A game. We have to take our A game every day on the field and you don’t want it any other way.”

The Ogemaw Heights High School golf team is hoping to have a successful season with a mixture of returning players and new ones, according to coach Tom Kish. “It is very exciting to have so many student athletes interested in being on the golf team,” Kish said. “I am looking forward to having a very fun and successful year.” Returning senior golfers Jace Courtemanche and Garrett Paulson are expected to do well and play leadership roles on the team. “Those are my seniors, so I’m hoping they’ll provide the leadership we need,” Kish said. He said sophomore Alex Somerfield, who golfed in some varsity meets as a freshman, could be a

standout for the team this year. Sophomores Tyler Bailey and Faith Ignasiak could also prove to be standouts. Last year the team advanced from districts to regionals, but didn’t make it to the state tournament. In the conference, the team ranked sixth place out of the seven schools. “We had a decent year last year,” Kish said. Districts have now been eliminated from golf in Michigan. Teams will go directly to regionals with the top three teams moving on to the state matchup. “I don’t know if it makes it harder, (but) it was always nice to advance from districts to regionals,” Kish said. “Last year you had to finish in the top three to go to states and this year you have to finish in the top three. So that hasn’t changed at all.”

With weather making it tough for the Standish-Sterling golf team to have meaningful practices, coach Mike Waldie said it is hard to determine what the expectations are for the 2017 Panthers. However, SSC does have three returning golfers it can lean on to lead the team. “We have got some players with experience that we will rely on,” Waldie said. They will have to lead the way for the four new SSC golfers, Waldie said. “The returners will need to step up and improve, and we’ll need to help the newcomers along the way,” he said. Like other SSC sports teams, this year will be uncharted waters as the golf team competes for the first time in the Tri-Valley Conference. “It will be a tough conference to compete in,” Waldie said. “We will show up and see what happens.” Despite the challenges posed by the conference and uncooperative weather, Waldie said he is excited for the season to begin. “I look forward to working with the team and helping them improve not just for the season, but for a game they will enjoy for the rest of their lives,” he said. The first scheduled meet for the Panthers is April 12 at Bay Valley in Bay City.

Standish-Sterling’s girls soccer team is expecting a tough season, according to coach Kacey Bentley. “I’m expecting a lot of improvement, because it’s a really young team,” Bentley said. “We’re hitting a lot of fundamental bases and hopefully they’ll move quickly and will be very competitive.” The team gained five freshmen and seven sophomores this year. Last year, the team went with zero wins throughout the season, so Bentley said he has been conditioning the athletes with a lot of running and agility drills since practices began March 13. “It’s going to be a challenge,” Bentley said. “Just because of what is in our conference and who we play all the time. I just hope the younger girls don’t get down on themselves and keep their confidence up. That will be our biggest challenge.” After the season, the team will lose four seniors to graduation: Emma Mohr, Alyssa Caron, Sierra Zawacki and Emily Wiedyk.

“I expect quite a bit from my seniors,” Bentley said. “They should do well for me. I’ve talked to them, and hopefully we have good returns this year, but if we don’t, they can be happy they were the foundation blocks for the future.”

The Ogemaw Heights girls soccer team, which recently joined the Northern Michigan Soccer League, is expecting a promising year, according to coach Dan Ahearne. Ahearne expects the team to improve following the move to the NMSL. “These schools are more our size,” he said. “I think we’ll have a much better level of competition for us.” This year will mark Ahearne’s second year as the coach for the Falcons. He said the team only won one game last year in districts, but he’s hoping to get the team to win half its games this year. “Any wins are going to be a boost for the program,” he said. “I don’t want to be too optimistic because I just don’t know what the competition is going to look like,

because we haven’t seen them.” He expects this and the following year to be the team’s two strongest years due to a large number of junior and sophomore players. “Whatever we do this year, I imagine we’ll do even better next year,” Ahearne said. Senior Mackenzie Morris is expected to make a strong comeback following a knee injury, according to Ahearne. Morris is projected to be the team’s midfield captain. Sophomore Alyssa Middleton is expected to do well for the team as well, Ahearne said. He said she will more than likely be the team’s defensive captain. Ahearne said he expects the team to have a strong defense as it has been in previous years. “If we can keep them down to one or two goals and score a couple our-

selves, we’ve got a chance,” Ahearne said. The team’s goalie situation is currently up in the air, but Ahearne is currently looking at a few players who may be a good fit for the position.

However, the team’s biggest problem is scoring goals. “We’ve struggled in the last few years with scoring goals,” Ahearne said. “Our focus this year is going to be putting the ball in the net.”

The Lady Wolverines softball team will trot out plenty of experience when it takes the field this year, and coach Jeri Christie believes experience could be key in Au Gres-Sims having a successful season. “Our returning players have a season playing together under their belts,” she said. “We will look to them to be leaders in the classroom and on the field. Kara Caulfield returns on the mound. Kara’s been working hard in the pre season to not only get faster, but to gain more control over her pitches. Rachel Hiveley will help anchor the outfield while Shea Horton and Sydney Walker will take command in the infield. Their experience will definitely be a source of strength for the Lady Wolverines.” Hiveley, Caulfield, Horton, Walker and Abigale Edmonds are AGS’ five seniors. Sophomores Brianna

Freehling and Marlee Walker are also returning to the varsity team this year. While the experience is expected to translate to positive results in the field and on the pitcher’s mound, the Wolverines have some work to do at the plate, Christie said. “We will need to work on being confident, aggressive hitters and base runners in order to produce runs,” she said. “We’ve seen some good at bats in practice from many of the underclassmen, which is a necessity if we are to succeed this year. Stepping up, showing up and never giving up will be extremely important for the underclassmen to secure a spot in the line-up.” Christie said the team’s expectations are to work hard, take risks, learn from mistakes and play as well as possible. Hale might not have the biggest team in the league, but it plans to be competitive, according to coach Mike Cadwell. Cadwell, who’s been coaching the team for two years, said seniors Skyler Ready, Hannah Balbaugh and Taylor Pelton should all play leading roles on the team. He said Ready will be the captain. In addition, the team will be getting some assistance from four up-and-coming sophomores. Cadwell said hitting will probably be the team’s strong suit this year. He said Balbaugh was batting in the .600 range last year and is working to improve this average for the upcoming season. He also said speed will be a big factor with the team and he is working to get each player to make it around the bases as quickly as possible. The biggest hurdle the team faces is keeping its composure against bigger schools. “We have what we have,” Cadwell said. “We have to go with that and take

Mio AuSable softball has a team comprised of both returning players and ones new to the diamond. While the group saw players lost to graduation, head coach Kelli McDonald said she is looking forward to seeing how her current team works together on the field. “We graduated five seniors who played crucial roles on last year’s team, both batting and in the field. They brought leadership and years of experience,” she said. “We have a young team but great, experienced team leaders who know how to get the job done. All of them are hard workers, from the freshmen up to the seniors.” Back from last year are seniors Emily Mangutz and Cassidy Kamen; juniors Karley Auten, Maddie Bones and Angel Donnelly; and sophomores Lauren Kuffel, Jordan Butler and Claudia Wilson. “We have a handful of players

Emily is both a pitcher and plays first base, while Cassidy can play infield or center field. Both their leadership skills and softball skills will be crucial for our team this year, as we are welcoming incoming freshmen. Experience will lead the way for the Ogemaw Heights Falcons varsity softball team, coach Dave Mairose said. Mairose said the team lost six players to graduation, and he is looking to senior Elizabeth Getzinger to step up and shine this year. Also returning is shortstop and outfielder Tess Childs and sophomore pitcher Taylor Casselman. “Most of the girls moving up from junior varsity have been playing summer ball and stuck together at high school,” Mairose said. “I look forward to them having a good season.” Mairose thinks that experience, while young, will help with the season. “Being that we aren’t in a conference, we can’t win a conference,” he said. “We are planning to go deep in the season. I want the girls to build each game through the season and at the end, be in the top of their game heading into the

postseason.” Mairose said there are several games built into the season that will be good outings. “Chippewa Hills is going to be a tough tournament,” he said. “Bay City Central will be a tough doubleheader. Beaverton, Clare and the Tawas tournament will be another tough weekend.” “Even though there are some games in there we look to be successful at, you just never know with high school ball,” he added.

StandishSterling Central Softball By Tim Barnum news@arenacindependent.com 989-387-9140

After winning a district title in 2016, the Standish-Sterling softball team has its sights set on repeating this spring. “We expect to defend our district title,” said Panthers coach Rich Sullivan. “Districts are at our place this year and we want to keep that trophy here.” SSC returns seven players, including four seniors — Haley Hutchinson, Debbie Yealey, Richelle Campbell and Samantha Warren. This will be Hutchinson’s fourth year on varsity and Yealey’s third year. Returning juniors include SSC pitchers Shayna Schmidt and Branda Bleshenski, and catcher Aubrey Roper. Sullivan said there are three players new to the varsity team who he believes can contribute in a significant way this season.

“New to varsity, we will be looking at Shay Sullivan to help us in the infield along with a third pitcher in the rotation,” he said. “I believe Isabel Niernberg will be able to help us with aggressive base running, along with speed in the outfield. Freshmen Karleigh McBride should add some pop to the lineup. She is a very aggressive hitter and can fill the void of run production.” The Panthers should have a solid defense this year, Sullivan said. “Our biggest strength should be our defense,” he said. “We should add some speed to the outfield, along with a lot of skill on the infield. Pitching should be strong with Branda and Shayna, who already have two years of varsity under their belts.” Offensively, though, SSC will have to make up for production lost from the 2016 team. “Our biggest obstacle will be run

production,” he said. “Our graduates accounted for 86 percent of our RBIs and 77 percent of our hits for extra bases. We have spent a lot of time this offseason working on hitting drills, and I definitely see players that can step it up for us this year.” In its first year as a member of the Tri-Valley Conference, SSC will have a lot of tough games on its schedule, Sullivan said. “Our TVC schedule is really going to push us,” he said. “Swan Valley, Freeland, Alma, Shepherd and Bullock Creek are all preseason ranked. We also have a very difficult nonconference schedule with Pinconning, Reese, Garber and defending state champions Richmond. As long as we can keep our confidence up and trust in each other, we will be a very tough team at the end of the season.” SSC kicks off its season at home against Ogemaw Heights April 4.

Whittemore-Prescott varsity softball coach Sam Harrison is looking forward to starting his 23rd season as head coach with a highly-experienced team. “This is the most experienced team I have coached in a long time,” Harrison said. “We return eight players that started games last season.” Returning is pitcher Kayli Bronson following a 13-8 season on the mound that earned her all-district, all-region and all-conference in 2016; catcher Hailey Hostetler, who earned a .385 batting average with 37 RBIs; outfielder Baelee MacDonald, who earned a .406 batting average with 35 runs and an all-district title; pitcher and shortstop Caitlin Liddell with a .355 batting average with 38

runs and honorable mention all-conference; infielder Megan Blust with a .340 batting average with 28 RBIs; infielder Kelsey Goretcki with a .314 batting average and 32 RBIs; and outfielder Cheyenne Lewis with a .255 batting average and 29 runs. “Our goal is to improve all areas of the game, especially defensively and in execution of our short game,” Harrison said. The team lost outfielder and solid batter Sara Arndt and all-district second base Katie Mervyn. New to the team is junior Cheyanne Morgan, sophomore Ashley Lauria, and ninth-graders Marisa Schmidt, Chianne Britt, Hailey Horn and Hannah Hudson. Last year the team wrapped up the season with a 21-15 season record with a 13-5 league record.

Au GresSims Track & Field By Rachel Farley rachelfarley@ogemawherald.com 989-387-5262

Au Gres-Sims had the largest turnout in the last decade for track and field sign-ups, according to coach Kevin Loga. “We had 25 girls sign up and 23 boys, so 48 total for now,” Loga said. “It’s the largest turnout of any sport Au Gres-Sims offers.” Loga said the teams will be composed of many juniors and seniors, who he expects will help the teams to do well this season. “Time will tell who will emerge as leaders on both teams,” Loga said. “I think we’re going to try to score points in field events. I think our field events this year will be stronger than our running events.” Loga said he believes the returning athletes have demonstrated success in the past and will be able to pull the team together, despite not having home facilities to practice on. “We hope to be able to get out to the facilities that still exist up here when we come back after spring break,” Loga said.

Losing only two seniors to graduation, the Lady Eagles of Fairview are hoping to go far in this new season, according to girls head coach Diana Danhoff. “I have Mara Krupinski, and Andrea Ford, Sarah Handrich, Tala Barton — those are my four seniors I can think of offhand,” she said. “Mara is the 200 (meter) and long jump and she went to state last year in the 200. And Andrea Ford is my 400 and also 200. Sarah is my high jump and she is also hurdles and a big part of the relay team. Tala Barton who is also an important part of the relay team.” There were some athletes new to the varsity team this season, which also give Danhoff hope for a great season. “I’ve got some good possibilities, and one is Jaedyn Winton and the other one is Addison Goy,” she said. “Those two are coming off the cross country team, so a big addition to the track team. They are both freshmen.” “I’m excited this year because last year we didn’t have a whole lot of distance

runners, so those two would be a huge addition,” Danhoff added. “Also with throwers, I’m going to have Kaylee Handrich and Elisabeth O’Hagen to fill in for my throwers this year.” While there were no girls from Atlanta as of yet, like in the previous year, both track and field teams would be a co-op with Atlanta. The team has already made some goals for the upcoming track season, Danhoff said. “The girls have a good chance of taking that district title again,” she said. “I’ve got a few (girls) quite possibly could go to states this year. I know those four main girls — the seniors — they want to break some records.” The Fairview boys track team had goals of its own for the new season, head coach Mel Haskin and assistant coach Don Haskin said. “This year’s team is very balanced from top to bottom,” Don Haskin said. “We should be strong in both running and field events.” The coaching staff was happy to see returning athletes and excited to see them

excel in their area of specialty. “Hunter Reeves and Dillan Brancheau will be leading us in the throws,” Don Haskin said. “Jesse Yoder and Tylor Ross will be the catalysts of the distance running crew, “We also have some fantastic long sprinters with Seth Cleeves and Drake Willobee. Tyler Crouse, Kyle Monroe, Nicolas Giraldo Alvarez and Lucas Brock will really make the hurdles and sprinters a very formidable group of high scorers. Jay Cleeves, Aaron Eaves and Dalton Danhoff will really help in the jumping events. Deven Davis and Mike Bartz will firm our relays, which can have a huge impact on scoring potential.” Mel Haskin said while there were many returning athletes who will carry the team through some events, she and her husband were excited about the new names on the roster. As a team, the group had some lofty goals that included North Star League, states and regionals. “Our team goal is to win the NSL for the fifth year in a row, qualify a bunch of student athletes to the state finals and quite possibly take a shot at regionals.”

By Tiffany Nutt tiffanynutt@ogemawherald.com 989-387-8929

The Hale Eagles track and field team has seen a large jump in numbers for this new season, head coach Nathan Turland said. “I think kids are kind of excited about running because we are doing well,” Turland said. “We’re pretty diverse, which is nice,” he continued. “We were fairly diverse last year but we just didn’t quite have the numbers.” Compared to this year’s combined team of 40-45 athletes, last year’s team struggled to have enough runners in the relays. Although graduation took Jordan Mason, Sam Hurst and Will Byrski, who were vital to last year’s team, hopes are high for a good season, Turland said. “We had a pretty small team last year so losing (them) … they were pretty important to us just in terms of doing relays and to get points,” he said. “It’s a bummer missing them because they meant a lot to our team. Fortunately we have a much bigger team this year — we have a lot of freshmen coming up, we have a lot of other people who are joining track for the first time. Although they will be missed I’m hoping that we’ll recover what (we) put

5/5 @ Fairview Invite 5/9 @ Hillman 5/12 @ Akron-Fairgrove 5/23 @ Whittemore-Prescott

in from other athletes. We should have a pretty good season this year.” An athlete who is returning this year and has promise to do well is Ethan Cagle, Turland said. “He was one of our best distance runners,” Turland said. “He missed going to state by four seconds. He ran a personal-best time; he ran one of the best races I’ve seen in a long time at regionals in the two-mile.” “We’ve also got Patrick Harris,” he continued. “Patrick was our MVP last year as a freshman so he is a sophomore this year. He is really multi-talented.” Olivia Rasch and Taylor Pelton are expected to bring special talents to the team. Despite having a previous foot injury, Rasch will go far, he said. “I’m really excited to see what she could do this year,” he said. “Hopefully all good, health-wise, and it’s going to be exciting to see her. She is a sophomore this year.” Pelton, who has also been involved in Hale softball, will be on the team this year as a senior, he said. “She came out and she threw for us at one meet last year,” he said. “She is a duel-sporter so she kind of decided to focus on softball (last year) but she’s back this year. She seems pretty serious about sticking around and the one meet

she did, she won it. She’s got a lot of potential, a lot of talent.” “It’s tough to pick some because I’m excited about a lot of people,” Turland continued. This year’s team is made up of not only returning athletes and students in multiple sports but many new athletes — some who have never run before. “We’ve got quite a few new people,” Turland said. “We’ve got a lot of duel-sporters this year. We’ve got many kids that are playing baseball and softball who are coming up for track as well.” Looking ahead, the team has high hopes for league wins, he said. “We want to do really well in all the league meets,” he said. “I would like to think we stand a chance with both the guys and the girls to hopefully take first in the Little Dipper for the North Star League.” Turland went on to say his team enjoys relay meets at Posen, and might possibly see its own Hale Eagle Invitational; however, nothing is set in stone. “I would like to rebrand Hale Eagles track and field,” Turland said. “We started last year but this year I think it’s big — we’re getting new uniforms — trying to change the face of track and field because its finally becoming something people are excited about.”

Despite being low in numbers, the Mio AuSable Thunderbolts track and field team has goals of going far, head coach Thomas Danhoff said. “We have a small team but all our kids are ready to do whatever it takes to win,” he said. Athletes who will be missed this season are Rachel Smith, Halie Haskin and Taylor Duprey, Danhoff said. Back for another season are Hunter Holzwarth and Haley Fisher, who are strong athletes, Danhoff said. “I expect them to do big things this year,” he said. While no specific future meets stand out, the Thunderbolts always enjoy competition against its rival. “We are always looking forward to running against Fairview,” Danhoff said.

The Ogemaw Heights High School boys track team is up and running, and coach Michael McGregor said he believes the student athletes will be very competitive this season. “I have a great group of athletes that will lead the team to success,” McGregor said. “Those athletes come from the short sprints, middle-distance and long-distance groups. He believes the team will excel in several relays, 100-meter hurdle,

300-meter hurdle, the 100-meter dash, 800-meter dash and the mile events. McGregor said he is happy with the number of student athletes who signed up for the season. “We will be much more competitive this year,” McGregor said. “The athletes have each other to work hard together, which will allow for more depth in each event. We have some work to be done in some events, but I see a ton of potential if the kids continue to work hard and be committed.” The team participated in its first event March 23 at the indoor invitational at Saginaw Valley State University. McGregor said this invitational allows the athletes to see where they are in their times and distances while he is able to measure where they will be by the end of the season. “I am excited to see the athletes compete, and I know there will be some great performances,” McGregor said.

With nearly 50 athletes running for the Ogemaw Heights High School girls track team, coach Rick Frank believes the team is off to a good start this season. Frank is expecting leadership from several seniors in each event this year. In throws, he is expecting Quinci Inmon, Tessa Frank and Taylor Godfrey to lead the younger girls to high scores. “The three senior throwers will hopefully continue to step up their performances and also help an up-and-coming younger group of throwers improve,” Frank said. For sprints and hurdles, he believes victory will be led by Lauren White,

Nicole Balser and Carley Killinger. “White will anchor the sprint group running anywhere from the 100-meter dash up to the 400-meter dash,” Frank said. “Nicole Balser will also continue to be a main person in our sprint relays.” In distance and mid-distance, he expects Carissa Martin, Anna Wyatt and Gillian Jones to pull the team through. “Carissa Martin will anchor a small but improving distance group,” Frank said. “Gillian Jones will also contribute a lot in the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter runs.” Coach Frank said he believes the competition will be tough this year but that with seniors and freshman runners combined, the team will have a good season. “We have a lot of new faces this season,” Frank said. “We hope to improve a lot this season as we get into shape and just figure out the best events for the girls to compete in.” Frank said his goals for this year are to get a group of girls to qualify for state finals, to earn a trophy during at last one invitational and for the girls to improve throughout the season over last year’s marks.

The Panthers lost several good athletes from last year’s track team and are relatively young, but coach Paul Walderzak said that doesn’t change what Standish-Sterling’s boys track team wants to accomplish in 2017. “Our first goal right now is to stay healthy and get as much out of our returning kids as we possibly can, but also develop those young guys,” he said. “Then our goal is always to win the conference. We want to win the conference and make a strong showing in the regionals. So we’re in a little bit tougher conference than we’re used to, but those goals don’t change.”

This will be SSC’s first year competing in the Tri-Valley Conference, but Walderzak said the team has faced many TVC teams in the past. “Over the years we bump into Swan Valley and Freeland every now and then,” he said. “We normally see Carrollton. Annually we’ll see them. We’re pretty familiar with them, but there are some that we don’t know much about at all — Chesaning for example.” SSC is not shying away from the challenges the TVC poses, though. “It’s exciting,” he said. “This conference will be tough. Enrollment-wise we’re right toward the middle. There are some good track programs there.” The Panthers return several experienced athletes. Seniors Hunter Traver and Tommy Kusterer are both expected to perform well in the pole vault, and Kusterer will likely be one of the team’s top sprinters, Walderzak said. Walderzak believes can have a successful season, which was the case in 2016, too. “Clay will run both hurdle events for us and probably some relays, and maybe a little bit of long jump,” he said. “Last year Clay was all-state in both of the hurdle events.” Senior Evan Haas should be a top shot put thrower for SSC, and junior thrower Drew Kraatz also returns to the team this year. Tylor Gibson and distance runners Dawson Herner, Landon White, Nick Schiavo and Nick Spare are also back for the Panthers, Walderzak said. Despite returning athletes in many events, there are areas where SSC absolutely needs to get better, Walderzak said. “The first thing we have to do is be stronger in the throws,” he said. “The last couple of years we’ve been really, really young. We’ve got

potential there, but this is the year we really need guys to break out.” Sprints are another area where SSC will need some people to step up, Walderzak said. “We lost some good athletes, but I think these young guys that we picked up have a lot of potential,” he said. “I think that they can do some really good things.” SSC is scheduled to travel to Valley Lutheran for its first meet April 11.

With some new additions to the team as well as the return of several veteran runners, the Standish-Sterling girls track team is expecting to face the difficult competition head-on this season. Coach Gary Hagenbuch said he believes the three experienced throwers will garner a lot of points for the team. “They’ll make a really good team and will get us a lot of points,” Hagenbuch said. “It will be led by senior Michaela Lauria, who’s also a 300-meter hurdler as well. We’re expecting a lot from her as a leader.” The team will lose Lauria after this season to graduation. Following her lead on the throwing team is Cassidy Kraatz, a

junior, and Grace Grivetti, a sophomore. They will be participating in throwing shot and discus. “It will be very good and competitive,” Hagenbuch said. “They’ve been doing it for quite a while. It’s all about the experiences they’ve had in the past and they’re just ready to shine this year.” Coach Hagenbuch is also expecting his distance team to do well this season, which will be led by Emalee Kolevar, a junior, and Rebecca Daniels, a sophomore. “Those two are coming off of a very good cross country season,” Hagenbuch said. “We’re thinking that we’re going to get very competitive in the half-mile, mile and two-mile events. Hagenbuch said he believes those two teams will shine through the competition and help the whole team to progress.

The Whittemore-Prescott boys track team looks for another successful season with 18 boys returning. Last year, the team won conference and regional championship and was the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association’s state runner-up for the second year in a row. “Many in this group have been with the team for a couple of years now and have experienced the successes and disappointments,” coach Jeff Erickson said. “If the guys stay together, work hard, and stay focused I really feel like we have a shot at another

great season.” Nine of the returning athletes qualified for individual states and four earned all-state honors. Leading the sprinters will be senior Azaiyah Bell. Bell was the regional champion in the 100and 200-meter and finished third in the 200 at the Michigan High School Athletic Association state meet. He will also be looked at to solidify the relay events and is looking to add the 400-meter to his resume. Senior Hunter Kensa returns as the school record holder in the 800-meter. “He hopes to compete again for a state title after finishing second last year at the state meet,” Erickson said. “Kensa is a tremendously versatile athlete who can compete at any distance from the 100 to the 1,600(-meter). His leadership is key to a successful season.” In the field, senior school record holder Nick Stern looks to im-

WHITTEMORE — The Whittemore-Prescott girls track team faces challenges this season with its low numbers and only two returning athletes, but coach Jeff Erickson said that will not stop the girls. “I promise you that will not stop the girls from competing,” Erickson said. “While we have set, realistic goals based on our numbers, the girls are motivated and have been working extremely hard.” Returning this year are senior thrower Shelby Munsey and junior thrower and sprinter Karagen Koch. “Both these ladies have been in track for a while now and will provide great leadership,” Erickson said.

New to the team are junior MacKenzie, sophomores Sam Yorton, Kayla Davis, MacKenzie Broughton, freshman Laila Bell and exchange student Nozomi Yamauchi. “Bell was a force last year in middle school as a sprinter and should be able to compete at a high level right away,” Erickson said. “Yorton played softball last year but has been practicing hard in the offseason in hopes of taking down her mother’s school record.” Sam’s mom Jody Yorton is the new varsity track coach this year. “Right now, it is about trying to figure out what the girls can be good at and putting them in a position to be successful,” Erickson said. “The girls have been very willing to try different things, so that is very encouraging.”
