Telling a story with beating drums & traditional dances Beating drums and traditional dances are only some of the ways the Native American culture comes through during the celebration of the Honoring Saganing Traditional Powwow June 17-18. Colorfully adorned dancers show the crowd the power of storytelling and how it has an impact on future nations. “It is an opportunity for us to showcase a social gathering — or powwow — with some different dance styles, some of the different music and drums that the singers have to offer,” said Erik Rodriguez, interim public relations director. “And really it’s a family atmoshere for them to enjoy.” The event will feature vendors selling beadwork, woodwork and other creations. “They have arts and crafts, they come from all over the state to sell their goods — crafts associated with our culture,” Rodriguez said. “All kinds of native art that is prevalent to our culture.” The event showcases the rich and real Native American culture that sometimes is skewed in movies and media. “I think it’s a great educational opportunity,” he said. “People don’t know a lot about Native American culture. They (go) with what they see in Hollywood.” “It is kind of one of those cultures that unless you really immerse yourself in it, get a chance to really see it through the action or get a piece of what it represents — it’s pretty powerful,” Rodriguez continued. “So I think it’s a great opportunity for people to just get a chance to get a little into the native culture.” Grand entry for the event begins at 1 p.m. at the powwow grounds, located at 2750 Worth Rd., Standish.
