Fairview Cross Country By Emily Tierney emilytierney@ogemawherald.com 989-387-5262

One runner makes up the girls cross country team, but there are hopes for another girl to return. Coach Bobbi Ross said this will be senior Aby DeGrammont’s third year with her, and they are both hoping Paige Jenkins returns so DeGrammont isn’t alone. Ross said they will miss Addison Goy, who moved from the area, but are looking forward to seeing her later this fall at the Class D meet. As for DeGrammont, Ross said she has made steady improvement over the years. “She made first team last year for the league, and I would love to see her improve upon that,” Ross said. “As the lone varsity senior, she provides both athletic determination and team leadership, helping with the boys and middle schoolers.” The Fairview cross country boys team is aspiring to have a successful season, despite being a small team and mostly freshman athletes. Coach Bobbi Ross said she is still recruiting since the school year has not yet started. “Obviously, this is a very young

group,” Ross said. “And I am hoping for at least one more so they have a full team for competition purposes. Though they are young, they are experienced.” Nathaniel Eastman, Josh Benefiel and Logan Alchin have all been runners for the past few years. “Though Spencer (Clover) didn’t have the opportunity to run with us, he participated as a spectator as his older brother ran with us last year,” Ross said. “Even though they are young, I think they have potential to do well, and if we have one more runner — the young man I have in mind ran with us last year — they should make a pretty solid team.” Ross said both the talent and leadership of 2018 grads Tylor Ross, Andrew Hager and Durius Oaks will be missed, but they helped lay a foundation. “Tylor was the top of the league for the past three years,” she said. “And Andrew and Durius weren’t far behind as both were in the top 10. The current athletes all know what it looks like to win as they have seen us go to state as both individuals — last year Tylor and Andrew — and as a whole team, two years ago.”

LOGAN ALCHIN JOSH BENEFIEL SPENCER CLOVER ABY DEGRAMMONT NATHANIEL EASTMAN Ross said she expects to see Eastman working hard to improve from last year’s results. “He was on the brink of breaking through a mental barrier at the end of the season last year, and I know he wants to get there this year,” she said. “I’m looking for him to be in the top five in the league this year and making a run for state. He will be a leader for us both as a runner and as a teammate.” Ross said it will be interesting to see how the freshmen do. She said both Alchin and Benefiel have been a part of a league championship in middle school for the past three years and were in the top 10. “I’m sure they’d like to maintain that status and both are working hard to do so,” she said. “Spencer doesn’t have that experience, but he is working hard to fit with the group.” Ross said the team is young, but the goal is to get to the top of the league. If not, it has time on its side. “I want them each to keep working and keep improving,” she said. “Cross country is a difficult sport. I want them to see success so they can enjoy the season.”

BOYS

By Scott Nunn scottnunn@ogemawherald.com 989-387-9034

The Ogemaw Heights boys and girls cross country teams face mixed challenges this season. Coach Rick Frank said the boys squad lost Joey Marentette to graduation, and while the loss is a challenge, there is strong competition for the varsity spots. “The nicest thing I see so far is there will be competition for the top seven varsity spots on this boys team,” Frank said. Leading the new runners during practice were Carson Bragg, Dylan Franciosi, Bret Gemmill and freshman Anthony Martin. Returning runners are seniors Josh Anderson, Colton Bragg, Derek Franciosi, Alex Hoydic, Cameron Payne and sophomore Brendan Erickson. The boys had a strong season last year, qualifying for state finals and earning an 18th place finish. Frank said with all but one returner, the team is expected to put forward strong competition.

“This boys team is heavy with seniors but also a determined group who plan to finish better than they did last year at the state finals,” he said. Frank said the boys have goals to place top 10 at the state meet and to have at least one runner earn a state medal by placing in the top 30. The girls squad lost five key runners, three to graduation and two who moved out of the district. “This will be a big rebuilding year as many top-seven varsity spots will have to be new faces,” Frank said. “Right now we have around 15 girls with about 50 percent having high school cross country experience.” Frank said the girls squad only has three freshman runners, and one of his goals is to pick up at least two more. It will be a wait-and-see plan to find out which girls will fill the top seven spots on the squad, Frank said. The goal for the girls this season is to focus on learning, working and improving.

The Standish-Sterling boys and girls cross country teams are looking to rebuild after losing several seniors last year. Coach Ladd White said he lost nine boys from last year. “I had a great group of guys last year,” he said. “They all did good. They will definitely be missed this year.” White said the boys are in rebuilding mode, but he sees potential. He said this is Walker Arquette’s second year and he expects he will do really well. Sammie Hutter is returning after having some surgery

and may not be able to run this season, White said, but he plans to if able. “I’m hoping he gets to come back because he’s run the last couple years and is a solid runner,” he said. White said he looks forward to seeing how Tyrus Hutter does. “Tyrus Hutter is a returning junior,” White said. “And he’s working hard in practice, and we hope to get some good things out of him.” He said Rebecca Daniels is the only returning senior on the girls team, but senior Ericka Bigham also joined the team. “It’s looking like Ericka is doing really well,” White said. “Rebecca has been running for the last

four years. She’s very committed, hard-working, dedicated and a good leader. She’s actually the captain this year. She’s very organized and keeps everyone on track.” White said for the boys team, unless another person joins, the team can only be scored individually. He said there’s a chance with the new school year he could get an additional runner. He said he is excited to see how the girls do as a team. “Avery (Shoultes) is running very well as a freshman,” White said. “I’m hoping for the girls team to come away with some decent playing this year and hopefully get another guy out when school starts.”

Au Gres-Sims Football By Eric Young ericyoung@ogemawherald.com 989-387-9036

The goal has not changed this season for the Au Gres-Sims football team. “Our first goal every year is to win the league,” said coach Chad Zeien. “We have been successful in this goal the last two years. If we win the league, then generally, our other goals fall in line. Our second goal is to make playoffs.” But coach Zeien said even though getting to the playoffs is a goal this year, the Wolverines won’t be happy

just stopping there. “They have bigger plans for this season,” he said. While the goal remains the same, a lot has changed for AGS football this year. This will be the team’s first year playing eight-man football. Coach Zeien said the Wolverines lost a lot of their line from last season, but most of their skilled position athletes will return this year. “We will continue to run spread this year, but have a stronger run threat than we’ve had in years past,” he said. The Wolverines also return fourth-

year quarterback Caden Zeien this season. “In addition to his physical skills improving, his mental skills basically allow us to have a coach right on the field,” coach Zeien said. “Ryan (Schwiderson) is going to have a phenomenal year this year,” coach Zeien said. “He’s got great speed and vision and he has worked very hard on improving his pass catching abilities. He’s a great kid. Cameron (Sanchez) and Tony (Duncan) are the core to our internal defense and bring a much-needed physical presence.”

Ogemaw Heights Football By Scott Nunn scottnunn@ogemawherald.com 989-387-9034

The Ogemaw Heights Falcons football team hopes to continue its improvement after last year’s success of finally breaking a multiyear losing record. Coach Cody Kangas, who is entering his second year of coaching the Falcons, said he expects the season to be better than the last. “I know it’s a cliche but all I’m trying to do is beat what we did

last year,” he said. “Our goal every single year is to be 5-4 and playoff-eligible.” The team lost two key players to graduation — Colin Stahl and Sam Briggs — whom Kangas described as leaders on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Returning this season are Jullian Mlasko, Tyler Walters, Tyler Bailey, Alex Page and Jere Getzinger. “Each of them is going to have to be a leader on and off the field,” Kangas said. “We have a young

group of kids and it’s going to be imperative that these guys take a leadership role.” Also returning and anticipated to play a more crucial role this year are Owen Prusinski and Dalton Brindley, who Kangas expects to take the next step for the team. “They played well for us last year but they were told all offseason and I believe they’re going to take the next step this season and be great ball players for us,” he said.

Mio AuSable Football By Dominic Trimboli dominictrimboli@ogemawherald.com 989-387-9295

With a near 50-percent mix of returning and new players, the Mio AuSable varsity football team is ready to compete in its final year of 11-man football. Coach Jason Socia said the overall goal for the year is to beat the teams they’re matched up well against, and hold their own against those that are larger. “We were 0-9 last year, so we’re looking to win some games (this time),” he said. “We’d like to win them all, but we’re going to go out there and do our best.” Coach Socia said overall the team is more experienced than in previous years, noting last season he was starting seven sophomores

on a varsity team. He said that was essentially like putting a JV team against a varsity squad. He said one of the biggest factors that contributed to the team’s struggles last year wasn’t athletic ability. “I have really good athletes, it’s just a numbers game with us. It’s the fatigue,” coach Socia said. “We’re going against teams with up to 50 guys with our 20, and the fatigue is what gets us.” Two of the key players coach Socia said to watch for this year are quarterback Brendan DeFlorio and top receiver Pete Socia. He said last year DeFlorio got off to a slow start, throwing more interceptions than touchdowns. Coach Socia hopes this year DeFlorio reverses that trend. Coach Socia said even though this is the team’s last season in the 11-

man format, it will be approaching this season just like any other. He said the changes will all be made after the season is over, and he would rather the boys focus on the next game than the next season. The main thing the team will be working on this time around is defense. Socia said last year the team allowed its opponents to score up to 49 points per game, and it must find a way to put a stop to that. Overall Socia said his team is a great group of disciplined kids, and each athlete is a leader in his own right. He said if the community wants the to succeed, it’s imperative that they come out to support it during games. He said with only three home games this year, he hopes to see the stands full at game time.

Standish-Sterling Central Football By Eric Young ericyoung@ogemawherald.com 989-387-9036

With a young team and a new head coach, there will be a lot of newness to this year’s Standish-Sterling Central football team when it takes the field. However, coach Marty Malcolm said he still has high expectations. “We are going to be a young team this year,” Malcolm said. “I brought five sophomores up. We’re going to be young. But at the same time, I wouldn’t bring them up if they weren’t ready to play.” While this is Malcolm’s first year as head coach, he is a longtime assistant coach for the Panthers. He said the biggest adjustment for him has been on the smaller side of things. “To be really honest, as far as football goes, it hasn’t been as big of a difference as a role,” he said. “It’s been the little things —

picture-taking, this and that.” “Putting together an offense and a defense, that has not been that challenging because I have great coaches,” he continued. “I have great assistant coaches. We are a veteran staff.” Malcolm said the biggest change with a younger team is the speed of the game. “To be a JV player last year and come up to varsity, there’s definitely a change in the speed of the game and the physicality of the game,” he said. “That’s the biggest challenge as far as getting them ready. You need to put more prep time in. We had to adjust the schedule a little bit so they are learning. But they pick up stuff really quick.” He said he expects the team to perform and everything else will come together. “It’s just like I told the kids, ‘Win and do your job and we’re going to

be OK,’” Malcolm said. “I want to win. I want our kids to do their jobs. If we win and do our jobs, we’ll meet or exceed our expectations that we have. I’d love to win the conference, but we’re in the Tri-Valley Conference. There’s five or six programs in the playoffs. I think our kids would love to get to the playoffs. That’s a very realistic goal for us.” As for the schedule, Malcolm said the team determined how it was going to prepare for games. “The boys said, ‘Let’s focus on one at a time,’” he said. “One man down, next man in type of thing. We’ve got some really good leadership from some of the juniors coming up. We have some great leadership in those seniors that have stepped up. We have some great leadership in our captains. I think we’ll take it one day at a time, one game at a time, and see where we are at the end.”

Whittemore-Prescott Football By Eric Young ericyoung@ogemawherald.com 989-387-9036

Despite a new coach in Tommy Atkinson, this year will be all about tradition for the Whittemore-Prescott varsity football team. “The tradition at WhittemorePrescott is very rich,” Atkinson said. “I know that the community enjoys hard-hitting football and they enjoy winning. What I’m hoping to be able to bring with my style of football is hopefully an offense that’s able to move the ball around to our different athletes. Hopefully be able to put a lot of points on the board while controlling the clock as well.” “I just hope that they look forward to seeing physical, smash mouth football with a sound technique offensively and defensively and a bunch of kids who are going to give

their all,” Atkinson added. Atkinson said several players are returning from last season who are expected to play a big role this season. One of those is running back Ridge Schutte. “He was the feature back last year as the junior,” Atkinson said. “He will be the feature back in my offense as well.” Tanner Harrison returns this year as a senior in the quarterback position. “He didn’t play much quarterback last year, but he shows good leadership,” Atkinson said. Atkinson said he will look to Tony Lyons for leadership this year, as he has asserted himself as a leader and understands blocking schemes and calls. Sophomore Russ Wilson is going to take over the other guard spot. Michael Blust will be starting

at outside linebacker and tight end. Junior Dakota McKuen is expected to play an expanded role this season as a running back and outside linebacker. Also Aaron Mervyn has stood out during practice, and is expected to start on both sides of the line at offensive tackle and defensive end. Atkinson said expectations are high this year, as they always are in Whittemore. “Going back to 1992, we haven’t had a losing record,” he said. “That’s definitely number one. You want to keep that rich tradition alive. You want to have a winning record. I’ve got some very good young men who I want to feature.” “I think this team has the potential to not only make the playoffs, but hopefully have some success in the postseason,” Atkinson said.

Standish-Sterling Central Girls Golf By Emily Tierney emilytierney@ogemawherald.com 989-387-5262

This will be the first year for the girls golf team at Standish-Sterling Central. Coach Julie O’Keefe said this is the first year enough girls have been interested. “We are very excited to have nine girls who want to play golf for our school and look forward to building a program for the coming years,” she said. O’Keefe said the five seniors on the team are great leaders and are making the younger players feel welcomed and encouraged. “Golf can be a very frustrating

sport,” she said. “So the seniors are keeping everyone excited about improving.” O’Keefe said all nine girls are athletes in other sports as well. “They are basketball, softball and soccer players,” she said. “So they are competitive and they like to win. None of them have a lot of experience at golf, but they know that if they work hard to improve it will happen. They are at practice every day with great attitudes and are anxious and ready to learn.” O’Keefe said last spring, the girls went to her and asked her to coach. It has been a blast so far, she said. “They are smart players and quick learners,” she said. “They have

improved so much in the first two weeks, and I can’t wait to see how well they play the game in another month or so. I’m so happy that the administration and school board are behind the team 100 percent. Golf is a game they can play for the rest of their lives, so I’m happy to help them learn the game and hope they continue to like playing for years to come.” O’Keefe said the goal is to continue improving every day and trying to beat the scores they had in the last matches. “We are not focused on beating the opponents,” she said. “We want to become consistent players in all aspects of the game.”

Fairview Soccer By Dominic Trimboli dominictrimboli@ogemawherald.com 989-387-9295

The Fairview varsity soccer team is preparing for a season of growth as the majority of the team is still relatively young. First-year coach Solomon Handrich said the team will have to cultivate new skills this year after it lost key seniors who were leaders

on the field. “I think it will be a learning experience,” Handrich said. “Because of all the freshmen we’ve got a lot of kids who haven’t played soccer since they were in fifth or sixth grade.” Handrich said the main goal he has for the team this year is to work on striking power. He said as of now the players do not have the

kind of conditioning required to kick the ball as far or hard as they need to. Overall the team consists of 12 students: eight from Mio AuSable and four from Fairview. He said so far the team is getting along great, and has been having fun. The team has seven home games this season, and 13 overall in the regular season.

Ogemaw Heights Soccer By Scott Nunn scottnunn@ogemawherald.com 989-387-9034

With the graduation of eight seniors, the pressure is on the returning players on the Ogemaw Heights Falcons soccer team. Coach Tom Zaske said the team graduated seven starters, several of whom were four-year varsity players and the backbone of the team’s defense. “They will be missed for sure, but we are working very hard with the players we have replacing them this season,” Zaske said. “I feel by the middle of this season our defense will look very similar to last year.” The team has a hole in its midfield. Filling part of that gap will be Jason Wood. “Jason possesses great size and agility as a midfielder and I look for him to control the middle of the field all season,” Zaske said.

Returning this year are strikers Dylan Finkbeiner and Nick Marentette. “Both boys have a great nose for the net and have the ability to put the ball in the net every time they get an opportunity,” Zaske said. “They also possess great vision and are able to get teammates involved when they get bottled up.” The team’s goalie is returning senior Trevor Likavec. “He has been a four-year starter in the net and this looks to be his best season yet,” Zaske said. “Trevor works very hard to be the very best at his position. He has attended a few keeper camps over the last three years and it has definitely paid off.” Finkbeiner, Marentette, Wood and Likavec will all serve as captains of the team this year. Other returning players are juniors Nathan Fisher and Alex Kennedy, whom Zaske said he expects to lead the defensive backfield this season.

“Coming off a season where they played a full junior varsity schedule plus 10 varsity games has definitely helped,” Zaske said. Zaske said the expectations for the team are high with the number-one goal of winning districts. “We have been working hard all summer and we look to build off our district title win from last year, which was the first in 10 years,” he said. “We would love to win our division and conference as well.” Zaske said as a younger squad, the team knows it will have some growing pains, but the boys are focused and improving every day. “At our spring rally I told the players that I want to see every four-year player hold up that district trophy,” Zaske said. “It’s such a great feeling to share that moment with your teammates. We also talked about building character and helping these young men grow into awesome adults.”

With a steady message and constant goal, the Standish-Sterling Panthers boys soccer team is looking forward to the year. “The goals are the same every year — to win conference and districts,” coach John Rudberg said. Rudberg said the returning seniors should aid in the team’s

Whittemore-Prescott Soccer By Eric Young ericyoung@ogemawherald.com 989-387-9036

Despite being a small team, Whittemore-Prescott soccer coach Ann Aldrich said she still expects her team to compete this season. “As a small team, all of our players have playing time, and they each have to pull their weight,” Aldrich said. “I expect each player to master their positions and the game.” But she said she has high hopes that that will be a strong possibility. “I am fortunate to have a team that wants to improve and are willing to do what it takes,” she said. “They are coachable. As a coach, it’s a win-win for me.”

The W-P team begins this season without Mackenzie, Karagan Koch and Aurora Bamburger, all of whom graduated last season. But returning this season are seniors Joseph Bicoll and Jacob and Josh Green, bringing with them expertise and leadership. “Seeing that we have a young team, I’m counting on them to step up as leaders on and off the field,” Aldrich said. There will also be several new players joining the team this season. “We have several freshmen and a new sophomore,” Aldrich said. “Since we don’t have a feeder program, we are all pretty new, except for our seniors.” Aldrich said she wants to see

the team improve throughout the season. “I expect the team to learn as we go, setting new goals as we accomplish old ones, and communicate with each other,” she said. “It’s a giant play area, and one person can’t do it alone. It’s going to take teamwork, communication and passion for us to succeed. I have full faith in them that it’s going to work out in the end.” “We should be able to compete this season and make more attempts at goals than previous years,” she said. “This year my goal is to close some of the gaps we’ve had in previous years. We will take it one game at a time.”

Schedule By Eric Young ericyoung@ogemawherald.com 989-387-9036

The Ogemaw Heights girls swim team returns a number of strong competitors from last season, but will once again deal with the inconvenience of practicing and competing in Standish due to the pool not yet being completed in Ogemaw. Ogemaw only graduated four swimmers last season, including Megan Blanchard, Jordan Kartes, Lexi Mularz and Felicity Soares. “Jordan Kartes’ absence will be the deepest felt, as she was the most versatile swimmer we have had in a long time, and our go-to distance swimmer this past season, qualifying for the Division 3 state meet and setting a new OHHS record in the

500 freestyle,” said coach Louise Hofer. Ogemaw returns nearly all of last year’s swimmers, Hofer said. “Taylor Casselman is already proving to be strong as her first meet results indicate,” Hofer said. “She will be an asset to us in the freestyle and backstroke events. Gail Kowaleczyk is our lead breaststroker and I am looking for some good time drops from her this year. Sara McKinney excelled last season in her distance events and she has set some lofty goals to continue her improvement. Madison Moore is likewise a distance freestyle swimmer and will help us in the 200 and 500 events. Haven Riedel is a returner, ready to drop time in the 100 butterfly, while Megan Scott

will continue to improve in both freestyle and backstroke. Jalanie Stovall is back for another season and will contribute in the distance events, while Emma Withers will expand her versatility to include distance and sprints.” Ogemaw Heights will be repairing the pool, but it won’t be ready until at least fall 2019, so Hofer said the girls again face the challenge of traveling to Standish. “Despite that, the girls are in good spirits and would rather ride the bus every day than not have a team,” Hofer said. “Dealing with the same situation last year, we had a great season and I expect this year to be no different. We will stay in positive spirits in spite of the challenges and we will support each other daily.”

This year expect big things from Standish-Sterling Central’s varsity swim team. Coach Shawn Maison said this year the team is particularly strong. “Right now, looking individually, I’d like to see four or five swimmers go to state,” he said. “We’d like to get one of our relays there as well.” Maison said the team consists of seven returning players, and six freshmen. He said unlike in most

teams, his younger athletes are some of his strongest swimmers. He said most of his freshmen have been swimming on age group teams for years, so they are more than prepared for high school athletics. While this isn’t the biggest swim team SSC has ever had, Maison said it is one of the most talented across the board. He said there have been multiple players on the team, like Kourtney Karpinski and Sierra Maison who have already broken school records at the beginning of the season.

With several girls returning, the Au Gres-Sims varsity volleyball team is looking forward to another season. Coach Jeri Christie said good things about several of her players from last year. She said Marlee Walker, the captain, is a good leader and solid all-around player, while

fellow captain Brianna Freehling is a team leader and aggressive and quick. She said Makenna Lagalo continues to improve and is fun to be around and a solid server, and Alex Strano is a defensive specialist, has a positive attitude and is a smart player. Keagan Skacal is also a good, competitive athlete who will contribute in many ways, she said. “My hope is that they all are

dedicated to the process, set goals, work hard and continue to crush them,” Christie said. She said the goals this season are to achieve academic all-state, 90 percent serving and a 2.5 passing average. The team has also set its sights on winning districts and the North Star League championships. Beyond all this, Christie said one of her goals is to make the team like a family.

Fairview Volleyball By Dominic Trimboli dominictrimboli@ogemawherald.com 989-387-9295

With a strong foundation built upon a robust serving crew, the Fairview varsity volleyball team is ready to win some games this year. After a less than stellar season last year, Coach Diana Danhoff said she thinks the team will be able to turn its performance around this year. She said the girls have more experience and should be able to win some games this time around.

This year the team consists of a majority of younger girls with only five returning players. Danhoff said the key thing the team will be working on this season is defense. She said as the team does not have many power hitters, it will focus on keeping its opponents from scoring. Danhoff said two key players to watch for this year are Britney Welser and Mariah Largent, who recently finished playing for travel volleyball teams. She also said she has a defensive specialist, Janea

Troyer, who will lead the team on that front. As coach, Danhoff said her goal for the team is to improve its leadership skills, confidence and responsibility. She said she’s looking forward to seeing the girls mature over the season. Danhoff said the match the team is most looking forward to this year is the Pink Out game against Mio AuSable Schools. She said it is a healthy rivalry that turns into a fun game for a great cause.

Ogemaw Heights Volleyball By Scott Nunn scottnunn@ogemawherald.com 989-387-9034

With almost a fully intact returning squad, the Ogemaw Heights Lady Falcons volleyball team is looking for a solid season. “We are returning almost the whole team from last year,” coach Dave Luptowski said. “We lost three seniors.” Luptowski said he will be looking to returning setter Carley Bulow to lead the team on the court by setting

up the offense to the big hitters. “She did a great job last year,” he said. “I’m expecting even a better one this year.” Returning middle hitters Faith Ignasiak and Ashlyn Dantzer will also be looked to for a strong season. Both had great kills last year and Luptowski said from what he saw during summer workouts, they will be an even bigger force to contend with. In the back row Luptowski said the team has a couple seniors stepping up and taking charge.

Outside hitters for the team will be senior Mariah Mattson, juniors Bri Hines and Sam Kartes, and sophomore Arika Hasty. “They give us the energy and determination we need to have a balanced team,” Luptowski said. “We have the experience and athletic ability to have a great year.” Excitement is how Luptowski summarized his feelings for the season. “I’m so excited to coach all these girls again,” he said. “We’re expecting to have a great season.”

Mio AuSable Volleyball By Dominic Trimboli dominictrimboli@ogemawherald.com 989-387-9295

With a strong set of returning seniors at its core, the Mio AuSable volleyball team is confident in its abilities this year. Coach Libby Marsh said even though the team lost key players to graduation this season, the incoming seniors are up to the challenge. “We’ve lost five solid seniors,” Marsh said. “But the seniors step-

ping up are willing to put in the extra work it takes.” Along with the five returning seniors there are eight other girls on the team. Marsh said her personal goal for them would be to ensure they continue to build confidence and work as a team. When it comes to improvements on the court, Marsh said stamina is what the girls need to work on the most. She said the team is currently undergoing conditioning training

and as long as the athletes continue improving as they have been so far, this year there should be remarkable improvements. Marsh believes the team will have a tough road ahead, but it should be able to handle it. “I’m pretty confident (about this season),” Marsh said. “We are in a pretty tough league. We’re in the same league as teams like Rogers City who go to the semifinals every year.”

Standish-Sterling Central Volleyball By Emily Tierney emilytierney@ogemawherald.com 989-387-5262

The Standish-Sterling varsity volleyball team is ready to serve its season, with several returning girls. Returning this year are Grace Grivetti, Karleigh McBride, Kaeleigh Schabel, Mattie Fegan, Lakin Fryzel, Kayla Daniel, Gabby Mosciski, Kalie Murphy and Paige Hilborn, coach Becky Murphy said. She said the team is losing KennaDee Foco, the team’s libero, and Anna Nagy, defensive specialist. “KennaDee was our go-to passer in the backcourt,” Murphy said. “She took the majority of balls and was great at getting our offense off to a good start. She was a fourthyear varsity player. Anna was also a primary passer for us and was a consistent server.” Grivetti, a third-year varsity player, has put in a lot of work in the offseason and improved tremendously, she said. McBride, formerly

a setter and now libero, is a second year varsity player. Murphy said she is a great all-around player focusing on backcourt play. “She is aggressive and really coming into her own in passing and backrow attacking,” she said. Schabel is a third-year varsity player who is working on improving her speed in backcourt, Fegan is a second-year varsity player who is aggressive and has improved her offensive threat at the net, Fryzel is a second-year varsity player who has improved her aggressiveness and hitting range and Daniel is a second-year varsity player who has improved in her setting range and will be key in running the team’s offense, Murphy said. She said Mosciski, Murphy and Hilborn have greatly improved since last year. Mosciski, a second-year varsity player, has improved in form and technique, and Murphy has improved her setting skills and will be

a contributing member in running the team’s offense. Hilborn, a second-year varsity player, has been improving technique and hitting range, Murphy said. She said new players this year are Elle Adrian, Kayla Bergeron and Kassidy Bell. Murphy said the team has improved a lot this season already. “We are running a faster-tempo offense and increasing our hitting range,” she said. “We will be a huge threat at the net this year, offensively and defensively. Overall, we are faster on our feet and are continually working on improving speed, quickness and reaction.” Murphy said she fully expects to turn heads this season with the team’s play. “I think we are going to surprise some teams that will not be expecting how much we have improved,” she said. “We will have a winning record and plan on winning districts.”

Whittemore-Prescott Volleyball By Eric Young ericyoung@ogemawherald.com 989-387-9036

Youth and inexperience might be the name of the game for the WhittemorePrescott volleyball team this year, but coach Cathy Blust is hoping natural talent shines through. “We are overall a young, inexperienced team,” Blust said. “However, we have a lot of raw talent to capitalize on. With time, I think we can be extremely competitive.” While the team is young, some experienced players are returning this year. “Sam Yorton is returning with the

most experience on the team,” Blust said. “She is a strong server, which is a great benefit to the team.” Lexi Hart returns for her second year, as does Cheyenne Lewis. Marissa Schmidt also returns as a middle hitter. “She is stronger this year and has developed into a smart volleyball player,” Blust said of Schmidt. “She will be a big asset to the team.” One of the newcomers is freshman Skylar Swanson, who Blust said is extremely strong with a great vertical jump. “As she gains more experience, she will be difficult to contend with in the middle,” Blust said.

Schedule

Also new to the team is sophomore Sarah Santiago, a setter who Blust said will be an asset to the offense with her court leadership. This year’s goal is all about improvement. “We are committed to work on improving our individual skills to develop a cohesive, competitive team,” Blust said. Looking at the schedule, she said one team stands out. “Rogers City will be tough after going to the semifinals in last year’s postseason,” Blust said. “I think we could be competitive within the league.”
