The 2019 Au Gres-Sims baseball team has been practicing and is ready to take on the competition according to head coach Kevin Beardsley, who said he is so far pleased with this year’s group. “I think the team is looking fantastic,” coach Beardsley said. “We’ve got six seniors and ﬁve juniors, so that’s 11 upperclassmen. We look faster this year and there are a lot of returning players who have had a lot of starting time, so I’m very optimistic about this season.” Some of this year’s returning play-

ers include seniors Caden Zeien and Isaac Beardsley, both of whom have had starting positions on the varsity team since they were freshmen, coach Beardsley said. The Wolverines have been practicing for several weeks now, he said, but he feels the team still needs to work on its ﬁelding in the inﬁeld. Some of this year’s players have also participated in the Au Gres-Sims football and basketball teams and already have a familiarity with each other as athletes. Coach Beardsley said he saw this connection as an advantage going into the season, especially among the senior players.

“They’re familiar with each other as athletes, as people, and they’re a pretty close-knit class,” he said. “I think it does help them. They play for each other, they look out for each other, they compete with each other, and all of those things can lead to success.” While he would like to see improvement in the team’s ability to ﬁeld the ball and would like to increase batting averages, he said ultimately he feels the group is in a good spot to open up the season. “We have the right attitude right now,” coach Beardsley said. “The practices have been efﬁcient and I feel like they are setting themselves up for success.”

While the majority of players are younger than last year, the Mio AuSable baseball team is expected to be fast and defensively strong this year, according to head coach Ryan Rondo. This year the team consists of a majority of underclassmen. Rondo said while the team may lack experience, it is brimming with potential. “We’ve got a lot of younger talent this year,” Rondo said. “This year I think we’ve got seven underclassmen. We’re younger, but we’re quick.” While the team is quick, Rondo said one facet it needs to work on is

offense. He said the younger guys need to learn that sometimes it’s more important to take a walk than to go out swinging for the fences. “Our hitting needs to improve,” Rondo said. “We lost so many seniors, we’re replacing ﬁve starting seniors. We need to work on our pitch selection.” Rondo said younger boys may try to knock the ball out of the park every time they get up to the plate, but that’s not necessarily what the team always needs. He said the kids still need to come to grips with the fact that they don’t need to try to be the hero every game. He would rather have his players get on base

Although the team replaced many of its starters this year, Rondo said he thinks the team is still going to be strong. “We’re going to be good,” he said. “We had a really good season last year. We won districts and went to regionals. I think we’re going to be as good as we were last year.” Mio AuSable will be hosting the district tournament this year. Rondo said those games are the ones he is most looking forward to this year. He said he would love to take the championship in front of the home crowd.

There’s a lot new for the Ogemaw Heights baseball team this season, with a number of young players and a new coach in Rick Moore. “I was a teacher and coach here in Michigan and many years in Texas,” Moore said. “I have a total of 17 years coaching baseball, football and basketball.” He will be assisted by Taggert

Mcreadie, Don Brown and Glenn Gutierrez, all who have LIttle League through college baseball experience. “As coaches, we bring years of experience to the team,” Moore said. “We emphasize education, trying your best in any sport or lifelong activity and love of family. That will be the key to a successful sporting career and personal growth.” Ogemaw has four seniors this

year. “My expectation is that we have a winning season, and we have a lot of young guys on the team who haven’t played at the varsity level,” Moore said. “I know the players are ready to get outside and start playing, so are all the coaches. Being trapped in that gym is what we had to do, but fresh air and sunshine is the answer.” “We are a young team with lots of potential,” he said.

After claiming district and regional titles in last year’s campaign, the Standish-Sterling Central baseball team is looking to replicate, and possibly surpass, its past successes in this year’s season. The past season saw the Panthers work their way up to winning regional championship and recording a record of 29-9 on the season. With nine returning players who have

accrued plenty of game-time experience, head coach Ryan Raymond said expectations are high as they prepare to kick off conference play. “We’ve got a lot of talent returning,” Raymond said. “We should be very versatile and very athletic.” Raymond said at this point, the team’s biggest asset is having several athletes able to play a variety of positions, which he thinks will give the Panthers an edge when taking on opponents. He added that with a large number of

returning players, the team is equipped with solid leadership and experience. While he’s confident in the group’s ability as players, he said he hopes to work on and improve communication on the field. Overall, Raymond said he is excited for the upcoming season and is glad to have the opportunity to coach a solid group of athletes and people. “Expectations are high,” Raymond said. “Our first goal is a conference championship, and our conference is tough.”

The Cardinal baseball team is looking to the action on the mound and home plate to set the tone as it hones its defense early this season. Coach Ed Mervyn said the team lost several key four-year players including Alex Yorton, Alex Mervyn, Dan Caverly and Grant Cortman, each of whom played crucial roles last year. Coach Mervyn said the team will be looking to Michael Blust, Tyler Hostetler and Tony Lyons and newcomers Tanner Harrison and Ridge Schutte, all seniors, to ﬁll the gap. He said the addition of Harrison and Schutte will beneﬁt the whole

team. “They are going to be an added plus because they are athletes,” coach Mervyn said. “Harrison played ball as a freshman and sophomore. Schutte didn’t play high school ball, but he has played ball his whole life.” He said to ﬁll the gaps left by the juniors and seniors, the team will look to the underclassmen. “The sophomores are going to be counted on heavily,” he said. “They had to learn the hard way last year and I think they did. We are going to count on them like they are juniors and seniors and I think they will perform that way.” The goals for the team are set high by design.

“My goals are always set high,” coach Mervyn said. “If you don’t set high goals and have something to shoot for, it gets old. We are in the Big Dipper and Oscoda has a pretty good squad but I will have better pitchers than anyone in the league. If we can ﬁx our defense I think we will be a factor in the district.” Coach Mervyn said Oscoda topped the squad last year to win the league, but he said most of the teams lost key starters, so Whittemore-Prescott’s odds are as high as any. “I think if we play like I think we can, we got it,” he said. “Basically, we are going into every game with a 50-50 shot and that is all you can ask for.”

Entering its third year, the Fairview golf team looks to be competitive and have fun this season. “This year we lost Kendrick Eastman and Ryan Yoder,” coach Cliff Lietzke said. “Eastman was a good golfer. He was with me the whole time. Yoder came a long way in two years and got to be a very good golfer.” Lietzke said he will turn to the other returners to lead the team. “Most of the kids that have been

here three years are going to carry the load,” he said. Lietzke said only being around for three years, the team saw strong numbers this season. “It has been pretty good,” he said. “I have 10 kids right now, which is a good turnout for a small school.” In previous years the Fairview Eagles were golfing against schools substantially larger than they were. But this year Lietzke said they have joined a conference, which will increase their competitiveness. “I expect that we will be more

than competitive,” he said. “We are good. We have some long hitters and some good short game. We grow every year.” The biggest challenge with spring golf in Northern Michigan is having the ability to practice before the season starts. “One of the biggest challenges we face up here is getting out,” he said. “We have a short start before the season.” The goal for the team is to get out, learn the game and have fun, and Lietzke said the Eagles look forward to it.

With more than 20 students representing the Ogemaw Heights golf team this year, coach Tom Kish said he’s looking forward to seeing improvements in his athletes at every tournament. He has hopes that the team will contend in all of its regular-season events, ﬁnish in the top three at regionals and advance to state ﬁnals. “Our expectations are to get good grades in the classroom, display good sportsmanship, learn the rules of golf, focus on every shot, use good golf course management and try to improve each and every time they play or practice,” Kish said. While the Falcons lost graduates Quentin Thompson and Sam Briggs last year, several players will be re-

turning and new recruits are joining the team, he said. “Coming back for varsity this year will be Alex Somerﬁeld, Trevor Likavec, Tyler Bailey, Owen Prusinski, Jason Wood, Faith Ignasiak and Jack Juarez,” Kish said. “I look for Alex, Trevor and Tyler to be the leaders of the team. All of these players are fully capable of playing a key role for our varsity team.” Other returning players include Nickolas Whisman, Keaton Munn, Nathan Woletz, Corbin Ryland, Cori Bertossi, Ethan Lauria, Dominic Swain, Brendan Rector, Michael Meress and Mariah Mattson. Kish said he expects to see improvement in all the returning players. “We also have quite a few new players that have the potential to contribute to the team, including Cory Balser, Lucas Courtemanche,

Katelyn Eedy, Eli Franzosi, Ralph Gilmore, Livvie Hodgins, Mallory Meier, Logan Neubecker, Mike Paige, Josh Tolfree, Mason Tousigna and Bryce Zettle,” he said. With 29 players this year, Kish said he thinks the Falcons have a solid team. “All of these student-athletes are proud to represent their school, be part of the team and support each other,” Kish said. “In order to have a good season all of them will have to focus on each and every shot and use solid golf course management in trying to improve.” Kish said the team is thankful to the West Branch Country Club, The Nightmare and The Dream for the use of their golf courses. “It is a privilege for our studentathletes to play and practice on the three golf courses,” he said.

As far as returning players, Chandler Stodolak is going to be counted on heavily this year, Waldie said. “He returns with the most experience from last year’s team,” he said. “Cody saw limited action last year, but showed much improvement.” Even though Bradley Mohr and Kendal Nelson had injuries last year that kept them from competing, they are both ready to go this year, Waldie said. “Nik (Baker) is new to the program, but shows to have some natural ability,” he said.

Waldie said the team is still looking to recruit members, as the league tournaments take six golfers and count the four best scores. “At this point, all of the ﬁve that are here will be going to every event,” he said. “So anyone interested in joining, it is not too late.” Waldie said the team lost several seniors last year, including Ben Davison, Eli White, Cooper Rood and Dawson Herner. “They will be hard to replace,” he said.

This year’s Standish-Sterling girls soccer team is expected to be more athletic compared to recent years, head coach Kacey Bentley said, but on the same token, it will have to overcome the obstacle of inexperience. Bentley said over the years more girls have turned out to play despite not having participated in soccer before. While the team will beneﬁt from the presence of new players, Bentley

said the trick will be getting them comfortable on the pitch. To balance out the less experienced players, the season will also see the return of last year’s offensive and defensive MVPs Johanna Davis and Kayla Daniel respectively. Along with Davis and Daniel, Ericka Bigham, whom Bentley praised for her aggressive defensive presence, will be returning to the team. Bentley said he felt the returning players will have a huge impact on the team’s overall performance, adding that Davis and Bigham have been selected as captains and have already

been functioning in a leadership role. “They’ve been doing very well,” Bentley said. “They are leading out, they’re asking questions, getting things straightened out and the team is responding well. I don’t think leadership is going to be a problem for them.” Overall, Bentley said he is impressed with this year’s group and thinks the performance going into conference play will be positive. “I’m excited for this season,” Bentley said. “Compared to what we had last year with just a downer season, this year is totally different.”

The Au Gres-Sims softball team is gearing up for another season and is ready to get out on the diamond and take on the competition despite having a smaller roster, head coach Jeri said. “We are small in numbers, but mighty in spirit,” Christie said. “There are 10 players on our roster so

we are aiming to stay injury free and eligible.” Nine of the 10 girls on the roster are returning from last year’s squad, Christie said, adding that the team will feature three seniors. Among those returning is senior Brianna Freehling who committed to play collegiate softball at Delta College in November. Last year’s season saw the Wolverines getting knocked out in the ﬁrst

round of district play-offs by the Mio AuSable team in a close 5-3 decision. Going into the season, Christie said she is so far conﬁdent in the team’s ability and performance and looks forward to facing off against opponents in conference play. “We will be solid with room to improve and get better daily,” Christie said. “My goals are to complete each and every pitch, to not give up and to have fun.”

The Mio AuSable softball team is conﬁdent in its abilities this year as the majority of the team is returning from previous years. Head coach Kelli McDonald said she is liking what she’s seen so far from the team. “We have a really cohesive group of girls with a lot of potential,” she said. “We have a handful of returning players, all playing a crucial role on the team.”

McDonald spoke speciﬁcally of Claudia Wilson, Lauren Kuffel and Summer Cox, who are her returning seniors to the team this year. There are high expectations for the Ogemaw Heights softball team this year, as the team returns a number of strong players and shows promise at the start of the season. “I have six returning, and from the six, I have ﬁve that are seniors,” said coach Dave Mairose. “All six returners I am anticipating good things from throughout the season. All six of them will have a big role this year because they were starters for me last year. I look for good energy from them and to play a big role to fulﬁll a successful season for us.”

Mairose said Ogemaw graduated three seniors from last season. “All were starters for me and made an impact throughout the season,” Mairose said. “I would like to wish them luck in their next step in life.” Mairose said the team is on the upswing. “There is a lot of talent and a lot of skilled players in positions that we need to have a successful season,” Mairose said. “I feel with this team, we have a great chance of going deep into the postseason, and it will take discipline and a good attitude and the desire to put a good game together.”

Ogemaw is not part of a conference, Mairose said, which makes every game matter in a season. “Being that we are not in a conference, all of our games I feel are important,” he said. “Every game we play is a game we will not get back, so it must be played at a higher level of intensity, so I look forward to having the girls reach that goal.” Mairose said the softball program is also working on putting together an alumni softball game this year, scheduled for June 8. After a strong showing during preseason training, coach Rich Sullivan is making bold statements about the Standish-Sterling Central softball team’s aptitude this season. Sullivan said this season his team is facing one of its most difﬁcult seasons in his half-decade of coaching. He said the schedule currently pits the girls against 13 ranked teams across the state’s four divisions. He said games against Millington, Coleman and Richmond will be particularly taxing as they

were all in the state finals last season. Despite the stacked schedule, Sullivan is more confident in his team than ever. “The girls have been working hard so far through the preseason and we returned a lot of our starters from last year, so we look forward to them stepping up,” Sullivan said. “Our goals and expectations have never been higher. We firmly believe we have one of the best teams in the state for Division 3.” This year returning players Laiken Ex, Lakin Fryzel and Shay Sullivan will be the team captains. Sullivan pointed out that last year those three

girls were honorable mentions for allstate honors. Pitching and defense are where Sullivan believes his team is strongest this year. He said Fryzel will be his number-one pitcher, and he will return the majority of his players to the positions they held last year. The biggest thing the team will be working on this year is run production. Sullivan said it’s difﬁcult to get runners across home plate after getting them on base. To ﬁx that, the team needs to work at making contact with the ball more often to drive those runners home.

While the Fairview Area Schools boys track team solely consists of underclassmen this year, coach Don Haskin said the team is showing stronger drive than he has seen in years. “I’m excited about the level of enthusiasm,” Haskin said of the team. “Kids are working harder and going above and beyond what’s being asked.” Haskin said this is a break from

tradition from recent years that he’s glad to see. An increased drive isn’t the only new thing the team is experiencing this year. The boys team is now training with the girls team as a singular unit for the 2019 season. Haskin said he and co-coach Diana Danhoff decided that putting the two teams together would only increase the amount of attention the students get. After the ﬁrst few weeks of practice Haskin said he is happy to see how the team is performing, and thinks it’s getting in shape rather

Schedule quickly. He said one student who is leading the pack on the boys team is sophomore Nathaniel Eastman. He said Eastman will be one of his captains this year as he expects him to be a role model for the team. If there is one meet in particular Haskin is looking forward to this year, it’s the Fairview invitational. He said it’s always nice to be able to put on a good show for the home crowd.

The Fairview Area Schools girls track team is looking strong enough to be a heavy contender for the district title this season, says coach Don Haskin. “We’ve been practicing a couple weeks now, and things have been going really well,” Haskin said. “I would think the girls team has a very good chance to take the league.” The team has a small set of returning seniors, but is largely made up of a strong core of underclassmen.

Despite losing some strong competitors to graduation, Ogemaw Heights boys track coach Mike McGregor said he has high expectations for his team this season. “As a team, I hope to be competitive at all meets,” he said. “We have a ton of potential to bring home a lot of hardware in all individual events and relays. Our numbers are up this season, and with the depth in all events, I have high expectations for this team. This is a season where I believe we could have multiple state qualiﬁers.” Ogemaw Heights lost Joey Marentette, Mason Veltman and Quentin Thompson last season, which will create big holes this year. Marentette was strong in the distance group and a leader for the team, McGregor said. Veltman was a multi-event athlete and Thompson showed tons of commitment, competing in golf as well as track last season. But McGregor said he has several returners that he expects to play a big role this season. “Derek Franciosi was a state

qualifier in the 1,600 last season as a junior, and he has continued to train hard in the offseason to already run faster,” McGregor said. “He is a great leader and I expect a ton of great success individually and as an anchor leg in some relays. Holden Olsick has been a fine-tuned machine in the throws, leading by example and always working hard to be his best. He has the ability to join in with the other great athletes as a state qualifier.” Other seniors to mention include Josh Anderson, Colton Bragg and Alex Hoydic, three of whom McGregor expects to have a big impact this year. “I believe that any and all athletes who have made the choice to come back from last year can reach their goals and continue to be a better athlete,” he said. “It is up to them to put in the time, sweat and soreness to see improvements and be successful.” “My expectations for this season are for my athletes to be committed, be at practice and hopefully realize how great this program can be, individually and as a team,” McGregor said.

Ogemaw Heights Girls Track By Eric Young ericyoung@ogemawherald.com 989-387-9036

With a bigger group of girls than last season, Ogemaw Heights girls track coach Rick Frank said his team is getting closer to the days of old. “We had 22 girls last year,” he said. “Right now we are at around 30 girls. So we are getting back closer to the numbers I’m used to.” He said the teams he is used to have around 40 girls. Returning to the team this year, Frank said he has two four-year seniors he expects to be leaders and contribute this year. “Meg Kearns is coming into this season in great shape and I am expecting her to have the best throwing year of her career,” Frank said. “Colleen Sikorski looks to focus mostly on the sprints. She is also the only one with the state meet experience as she competed in the 4x800 relay as a sophomore.” Frank said he also has high expectations for Alexis Berdan in the sprints and sprint relays, Faith Kurtz in the hurdles and Emily Wilkins in throwing comps. “Emily Wilkins was a top freshman thrower in the area, and I hope her and Meg will give us a wonderful one-two punch in the throwing department,” Frank said. “The nice thing is, they both will be pushing

each other to see who is the numberone and who is the number-two punch.” As for goals, it’s all about improvement, Frank said. “For the returning athletes, it is always to improve over the performances from last season,” he said. “One thing I always challenge my athletes to do is to see how quickly they can perform at last season’s best mark. Once they achieve that level, now see how much more they can improve. So improvement over last year will be key.” “For the new athletes, just having fun learning all about the 17 events in track and ﬁeld,” Frank said. “A goal would be to ﬁnd the events that these new girls can have the most success at and then work toward the best marks they can achieve.” Frank said Ogemaw is not part of a league, and there are a lot of inexperienced girls, so there aren’t a lot in the way of team goals. “This could change come May,” Frank said. “I know we have a few athletes who are expecting to earn some regional medals. We have a couple who also have their eyes on what the state qualifying distance or time is for their event and will be going after that. So time will tell as to what type of goals we will have for the late May meets once they get here and we have eight weeks of training time.”

Short on distance, the StandishSterling Central boys track and ﬁeld team hopes to gain some ground throughout the season. “We lost a couple of sprinters last year and we lost three distance guys,” coach Paul Walderzak said. “Distance-wise we don’t have a lot of numbers but overall we have a pretty good crop.” Walderzak said the team will be looking to former state contenders seniors Dalton Neitzel, Collin Morel and Kenny Adrian and junior Landon Jennings to set the pace and lead the way. “They have been with us for a number of years and have been to the state meet,” he said. “They have a lot

of experience and they are what you want for seniors at this point — they look stronger and they look faster. All four of those guys have to lead the group. They have younger guys with them and they need guidance.” Running for the distance is returner Walker Arquette and Sam Schiavo, who was sidelined last year because of health issues. Walderzak said leading the hurdles will be Austin Hlinka and the throwing will be Luke Kolbiaz. “We are young,” Walderzak said. “We have a lot of sophomores and we don’t have a whole lot of freshmen, but the ones we do have a whole lot of potential.” Walderzak said despite the lack of experience of many on the team, if everyone works hard, the team will be a contender.

“If things fall together they are probably going to specialize in some events,” he said. “I expect us to be in the thick of things when it comes to the regional meet. In the conference I think we can be in the top half.” The goal for the team this season is to be strong competition, with the target set on states. “Our goal is to come to the last two or three meets of the year,” Walderzak said. “We want to ﬁnish toward the top and we want to contend for the region and get as many guys to the state meet as we possibly can.’’ “It is going to be a very different, very unique season for us because we don’t have any home meets,” he continued. “I think this team has potential and if the people that should be team leaders step up, we will fare quite well.”

This year’s Standish-Sterling girls track team consists of roughly 34 athletes, which is the largest turnout the team has seen in a number of years, according to head coach Gary Hagenbuch. While the team is heavily composed of freshman and sophomore athletes, Hagenbuch said the increase in participation will beneﬁt the team this year. “It’s encouraging to have this many girls at the younger ages coming out with so much potential that they are all going to make a big difference on our track program,” Hagenbuch said. “It’s fun to work with so many young girls and watch their

progress throughout the season.” Hagenbuch said he believes the increased numbers will provide the team with depth they haven’t experienced previously and will ultimately allow them to excel in the season. Primarily, he said the younger team members will allow the group to perform better in sprinting events and relays. A good number of this year’s newcomers participated in the SSC seventh- and eighth-grade track program, Hagenbuch said, adding that those athletes should be able to smoothly adjust to the high school program. However, a portion of the newcomers have little to no prior track experience, he said. He ultimate-

ly believes the less experienced athletes should be able to catch on in time. “It should balance out,” Hagenbuch said. “It’s like track 101 all over again — it’s going to take some time.” The process of getting new players acclimated will be helped along by returning veteran players, he said. “The ones that have been around from last year are really going to make a big difference in helping out with the newer ones,” Hagenbuch said. “They are just going to be good mentors.” He said he feels optimistic about the upcoming season but the conference is one of the toughest and most competitive in the area.

The Whittemore-Prescott boys track team intends to look past its youth and keep its eyes on the goal of championships. Despite losing some big names like Kyle Colton, Bobby Maxwell, Charlie Prescott and Zane Aldrich to name a few, coach Jayme Nickell believes the team has the ability to perform well. “The leadership of those guys

will be missed,” Nickell said. “They were great at the things they did.” A few key returners this year are Ridge Schutte, Dakota McKuen and Josh Green. Nickell said Schutte, a senior, is in the best shape of his life, and McKuen and Green are both record-holders at the school and only keep getting better.
