Life handed her a wild card
By Amy Hensel
amyhensel@ogemawherald.com
Although Lori Card grew up in a hunting family, she only started hunting fi ve years ago. Now she not only hunts herself, she helps others learn how to enjoy the outdoor lifestyle. “I started in my adventures to promote and encourage women and children in the outdoors, hunting, archery and fi shing,” Lori said. Lori faced some obstacles to get where she is today. She took hunter safety when she was old enough, but felt awkward holding a gun. “It didn’t feel right,”she said. She raised her children to hunt and fi sh, and stayed connected to the sport though she didn’t shoot. Ten years ago, she met Brian Stroik, who is now her husband. He helped fi gure out her dis-
comfort with shooting. “You’re left eye-dominant but you’re right-handed,” he told her. He showed her how to shoot left-handed. “It was nice being able to make it work,” said Lori. She started shooting 3D archery to gain skill. “If I’m going to go out and kill an animal I want to make sure I can focus on the kill spot,” she said. She practiced shooting so she could go hunting, but her competitive streak asserted itself, and she moved up to competition. She likes the challenge of bow hunting. She is president of the Michigan chapter of the International Bowhunting Organization. Five years ago, life got really challenging. She and Brian were engaged
and she was anticipating the birth of her fi rst grandchild. Then she got sick and was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, a chronic disease of the large intestine. She fought this for two years, lost weight and nearly died. Surgery followed. Now the pain is gone, but so is her colon and large intestine. Life changed, but didn’t slow down. Lori and Brian were married shortly before her fi rst surgery. A walleye fi shing event for what became Wild Card Adventures was already scheduled for two months later. They had 35 women expecting to depart in nine boats from four ports. Lori was organizing details from her hospital bed. That event was a success, but her struggles weren’t over. Outings would
get planned, women would pull out and Lori wondered if she had the energy to continue. One day she was cut off in traffi c by a car with a vanity plate reading Wild Card. She took it as a sign and carried on. Eating clean is important, and she has to avoid some foods that don’t digest easily. “I can’t eat potato skins and raw vegetables,” she said. Lean animal proteins are important nutritionally and her hunting and fi shing harvest are integral to that. “If I didn’t kill it or catch it, I don’t eat it.” Staying quietly at home wasn’t an option. Lori stays active outdoors and helps others do the same. When asked if she ever feels overwhelmed, Lori said, “Only when I’m being

by Lori Card and Brian Stroik to get women and children into the out-
doors, protect the freedom to hunt and promote wildlife conservation.

Stay safe this hunting season Hunting is a thrilling hobby for millions of people across the globe. In fact, non-hunters may be wide-eyed to learn just how popular the sport is. A recent report from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service found that 11.5 million Americans participated in hunting in 2016. Many hunters spend a lifetime hunting without ever suffering an accident or injury. However, hunting can be a dangerous sport, which only highlights the need
for hunters to emphasize safety at all times. Firearms It’s essential that hunters exercise caution with their firearms at all times. Firearms should always be considered loaded, even when they’re not. This approach should apply while hunting and while at home. Maintaining such a mindset can help hunters avoid dangerous, potentially deadly misTeaching safety at a young age ensures a safe hunt haps should they mistak- in the future. enly believe a firearm is FILE PHOTO not loaded when it is.
2019 Hunting & Fishing Guide
Make safety a priority this season
Whether this is your fi rst season hunting or you are a seasoned veteran, remember to put safety fi rst. • Treat every fi rearm as if it is loaded. • Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction at all times. • Put your fi nger on the trigger only when you are ready to shoot. • Be aware of your surroundings — know your target and what is beyond it. • Keep the safety of your fi rearm on until you are prepared to take your shot. • Unload the fi rearm when crossing obstacles and/or getting in or out of a tree stand. • When transporting fi rearms in vehicles, make sure that they are unloaded and in a case. • Obey “no trespassing” signs — they are there for a reason. • If your game goes onto property marked as “no trespassing,” you must have the landowner’s permission to retrieve your game. • Hunter orange should be worn as the outermost layer of clothing and must be visible from all directions. Camoufl age garments legally must be at least 50 percent hunter orange. For more hunting safety tips and resources, go to www.michigan.gov/huntingsafety.

2019 Hunting & Fishing Guide
Key to ice fishing success, be prepared Although it does not appeal to all, many anglers actually prefer fi shing through the ice to open-water fi shing. For one thing, anglers can get just about anywhere on the lake during ice fi shing season, something they can’t do without a boat during the open water season. Virtually every fi sh that’s available to anglers in the summer can be caught through the ice-some are even caught more frequently in the winter. Ice fi shing can be a fairly cold activity, especially on those windy days when it doesn’t seem fi t to be outdoors. On such days, a shanty is almost a requirement. Many portable shanties are available at your local sporting goods store, although some anglers, especially in Northern Michigan where the ice fi shing season can last for many months, build elaborate but removable shanties on the ice. These may have insulated walls and many of the comforts of home. Propane heaters can keep them warm and help keep the fi shing holes from freezing. But even a simple windbreak, made of plywood or particle board, can help. A sheet of plywood, cut in half and hinged, makes a simple windbreak. If skis or runners are added to one side, then it can easily be pulled
across the ice. It’s important to note that all shanties must be removed from the ice by a certain date, appropriate to the zone in which you are fi shing. When removing a shanty, anglers must also remove any and all garbage affi liated with the structure, including plywood and propane tanks. On less harsh days, many anglers can be seen on the ice on portable folding stools or overturned fi ve-gallon plastic buckets. Buckets often double as gear carriers. Anglers can fi t their rods, lures and baits into a bucket and easily carry them out on the ice with them. In many cases, anglers build gear boxes, often on sleds or skis, which they can pull behind them. The creativity of Michigan anglers can regularly be seen on the ice as many have built sophisticated devices to transport their gear and to ensure their comfort. Anglers who go out on the ice with or without shelters must dress for the weather. Anglers should dress in layers so they can add or remove them as the temperature changes. Many items of clothing-such as bib overalls, coveralls and fl eece jackets - are made of modern lightweight fabrics that

provide surprising warmth. Anglers should consider wearing a layer of thermal clothing against their skin that absorbs sweat and wicks moisture away from the body, thus keeping the angler warm. Anglers can break a sweat trudging across the lake, especially if they’re pulling a load behind them. One should also have on an outer layer of a wind-breaking fabric. Waterproof boots are a must and a pair of moisture-wicking socks under wool socks will help to keep anglers’ feet warm and dry. Although the idea of going ice fi shing may seem daunting, many fi shing clubs and sporting goods stores hold annual ice fi shing clinics where anglers can learn the basics. A number of Michigan state parks, interpretive centers and fi sh hatcheries also host programs during the winter months that teach basic techniques and offer hands-on experience. Ice fi shing may not be for everyone. But if you’ve ever driven by a Michigan lake in the winter and have seen the “shantytowns” out on the ice, you can tell plenty of people consider ice fi shing to be a pretty cool sport. 2019 Hunting & Fishing Guide
Gifts for avid hunters, anglers and outdoorsmen The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services’ National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-Associated Recreation unveiled that more than 90 million United States residents aged 16 or older participated in some sort of wildlife-related activity that year — the most recent year on record. Wildlife recreationists spend nearly $150 billion per year on their activities. With this in mind, those who have hunters, anglers or outdoorsmen on their holiday shopping lists may fi nd that gifts facilitating these specifi c pursuits can be the ideal fi t this holiday season. A visit to the nearest sports outfi tter can yield a bevy of appropriate gift ideas. For some inspiration, consider these gifts for the outdoor enthusiast. • Binoculars: Scoping out territory and looking for game is often part of the hunt. A set of durable new binoculars can give hunters an edge. • Heated shoe insoles: Hunting and fi shing often require long wait periods — sometimes in chilly weather. Heated shoe insoles and hand warmers can keep outdoorsmen warm.

• GPS/digital watch: Although many smartphones tell time and offer GPS services, lightweight watches may be more convenient than phones. For example, the Garmin Fenex Watch is waterproof and offers such functions as GPS, an altimeter, barometer and a digital compass. • All-season tent: Camping out is not just a summer activity. A tent that is rated to withstand various temperatures and conditions can be an asset. • Waders: Anglers sometimes need to get up close and personal with their prey. A sturdy pair of breathable waders is ideal for those who venture out of the boat or off of the coast. • Wool socks: They may be a basic item, but hikers, hunters and other sports people can’t stock up enough on warm, sweat-wicking wool socks that will keep their feet comfortable and dry on all excursions.
• Folding knife: Knives are ideal for cutting fi shing line, twigs for a campfi re and much more. A sturdy, quality knife that fi ts easily in a pocket or backpack is a must-have for hunters, campers and anglers. • Water-resistant pouch: A day on the boat or near the water requires gear that can get wet without soiling items stored inside. Choose a pouch that can fi t a camera, keys, phone, and other necessities. • Climbing stand: Hunters frequently spend time up in the trees to get a better view of oncoming game. Stationary tree stands may remain for the season, but lightweight offerings fold and can be transported from area to area.
