Opportunities for sighting Michigan’s most treasured birds
By Tiffany Johnson
tiffanyjohnson@oscodaherald.com 989-387-8929
Northern Michigan is home to some great sights. From the Great Lakes to thrilling wildlife encounters, summertime is a great time to get out and enjoy the area. It is also a time when some of our feathered friends return from southern vacations. Arenac, Ogemaw and Oscoda counties are all stomping grounds for some unique and colorful birds. Birding is a wonderful way to get outside and enjoy what Michigan has to offer. The activity is great for all ages and ranges of skill, said Keith Kintigh, field operations manager with the Department of Natural Resources. “You really just need a pair of binoculars and a field guide,” he said. “And a little patience sometimes, but that’s the fun of it.” Some areas in Arenac County are rich in wildlife, especially for watching birds. The Sunrise Coast Birding Trail goes through both Standish and Au Gres and ends in Mackinaw City at the very tip of the Lower Peninsula. “That’s the great thing about that trail: it identifies all the great spots,” Kintigh said. The specific areas where people can go to view birds are the Au Gres Delta Nature Preserve and Standish Nature Preserve near the coast. Birding, as a sport, is getting more people to come out to smaller communities for a chance to snap a photo of these impressive birds. “Spring birding has the potential to help tourism in many small communities,” said Kintigh in a press release. “Birders are grabbing a meal, getting gasoline or even stay-

The Rifle River Recreation Area is home to all those types of birds. The area is also abundant with trails and clear areas to view birds, according to Joni VonSteenburg, administrative staff member at the Rifle River Recreation Area. “There are different lookout points along the way. You can access them by vehicle or you can go by foot on our 14 miles of hiking and biking trails,” she said. Among the birds that live in this area are eagles that have nests in the park. “There is one on the east side of Grebe Lake, one on the northwest side of Devoe Lake and one along the river, at the head,” VonSteenburg said. Another area in the lower northeast part of Michigan is healthy with the abundance of
a unique bird. The Kirtland’s warbler is native to the Huron-Manistee National Forests in Oscoda County and may be one of the most well-known birds in the area. Serious and amateur birders alike can tour the best areas with a guide from May 1-31, said Wildlife Biologist Kim Piccolo of the U.S. Forest Service Mio Ranger District. “We have a really good success rate. About 95 percent of tours we see warblers,” she said. “Weather is the only factor.” A typical tour will start out early in the morning for a better chance to see birds active in their natural habitat. A brief video about the history of the Kirtland’s warbler and the forest it is native to is shown before heading out into the field. Not only are Kirtland’s warblers seen on the tour, but also other birds like upland sandpipers, said Piccolo. “Birders get excited to hear or see one on the tour,” she

said. Other rare birds that have been sighted on the tours are clay-colored sparrows as well as more well-known species like chickadees and common songbirds. According to Piccolo, the population of the Kirtland’s warbler is doing well. From a census that was started in 1951, the numbers have shown the bird’s population as low as 167, but the most recent numbers from 2015 show there are 2,365 Kirtland’s warblers in the world, including a few birds in Wisconsin and two recorded in Ontario, Canada. Any group wanting to go on a tour should call ahead, Piccolo said. “We don’t turn anyone away,” she said. “We ask for at least four people.” Whether looking for a specific bird or just to have a good time with some friends, Michigan is the right place to find unique and beautiful bird species.

Summer fun that is close to home
Up North Leisure | 37
Many entertaining summer events are right in your own backyard. Summer is prime vacation season when travelers take trips to every corner of the world. While faraway destinations abound, those looking for fun can also find enjoyable activities much closer to home. Many communities come alive during the warmer weather, hosting an array of locally driven events. People looking for a day of entertainment or an evening of excitement may be able to find an event that’s just a short car ride away. In your community this summer, here are a few events you’re bound to find. Carnivals and fun fairs: Open land or empty parking lots can be transformed into bustling carnivals in a matter of days. Carnivals or fairs may be sponsored by private businesses or local religious organizations looking to raise funds. Some fairs are established by the county and attract participants from
near and far. Carnivals often boast a wide array of entertainment, from amusement park-style rides to games of chance to music. Summer concert series: Summer concert series typically begin when the weather warms up, and music may not stop playing until Labor Day. Concerts may range from more intimate affairs that attract a few dozen people to a town square to larger events at beaches and boardwalks that draw thousands of visitors. Food festivals: Various towns close down their main streets from time to time to accommodate food festivals that feature a variety of cuisines. Some food festivals may feature one ingredient, such as garlic or cheese, while others may delve deeper and offer broader menus. Food festivals allow visitors to sample many different treats and may serve to advertise for neighborhood eat-
ing establishments. Street fairs: Street fairs also may close down thoroughfares in town. These events usually bring together a variety of vendors selling their wares in an open market setting. You can make a day of touring all of the vendor booths and buying handmade items from local artisans. Outdoor movies: Local parks frequently host summer movie nights when participants can view a movie on the big screen while under the stars. This can be an informal way to get the entire family together for a fun flick. Films are typically family-friendly and schedules are available well in advance. Bring a blanket and some snacks and enjoy an inexpensive evening together. Many people need not travel far for a little summertime fun, as many communities host fun events throughout the warmer months.

Keep kids engaged through summer vacation
Up North Leisure | 39
“Summer slide” is a term parents may hear at the end of the school year. No, it doesn’t have anything to do with playground activities. Rather, “summer slide” refers to knowledge gained during the school year that may be lost over the duration of summer break. The National Summer Learning Association says many students lose about two months of grade-level equivalency in math computation skills over the summer. Students tend to score lower on standardized tests after summer vacation than they do when the same tests are taken at the onset of summer. Minds left to sit idle can
haunt children when it’s time to return to the classroom. But parents who engage kids throughout the summer and reinforce educationally sound activities can prevent summer slide. Make vacations educational. Visit a locale kids have studied in class and explore its culture and traditions. Offer plenty of reading materials. Reading can expand children’s minds and help them build and maintain their vocabulary. Ask teachers for work packets. Students can stay on top of their studies by doing some light schoolwork throughout the summer. This can reinforce lessons kids
Vacations are a great opportunity for families or individuals to recharge. But especially active vacationers often return from their trips in need of rest, as planning may have taken its toll or schedules loaded with too many activities might have left little time for R&R. Those willing to simplify their vacations may find their excursions provide the rest they need and the energizing boost they can make use of upon returning from their destinations. Leave work behind The United States is one of the few countries that does not guarantee paid days off. The Center for Economic and Policy Research says one in four working Americans do not get paid time off. The employment site Glassdoor notes that among those who do get paid vacations, 75 percent of employees chose not to use all of their time in 2013. By comparison, Canadians get an aver-
age of 19 days of vacation time per year. Stress about making up work or falling behind makes some professionals worry about using their vacation time, and those who do travel may stay connected to the office in some shape or form. Splitting time between leisure and work responsibilities on a vacation can be taxing and take away from the time you need to relax and recharge. Cut work ties and immerse yourself in the vacation experience. Keep your itinerary flexible Scheduling right down to the minute can remove the fun of the trip. Leave opportunities to just sit and enjoy your surroundings. Perhaps other members of the family or traveling party have their own ideas for entertainment. A rigid timeline can make the vacation seem more like a commitment rather than an opportunity to let loose and stop watching the clock.
have already learned and keep their minds sharp. Purchase a journal. Encourage kids to write about their summer adventures in a
journal. Chances are their teachers will ask about summer vacations and may require an essay when students return to school.
Simplify vacations and savor the fun
