Caring for our CommunitieS Since 1975, and now, Stronger Than Ever In the early 1970s, four African American women looked out at their community and witnessed a lack of affordable, quality health care. They decided to do something about it. With seed money from a small federal grant, the first Hudson River Health Care center was born in 1975. Today, we celebrate Sun River Health - now a thriving network of 43 health centers, serving more than 245,000 New Yorkers each year throughout the Hudson Valley, New York City, and Long Island. We are a vital part of the community and a trusted resource providing our patients with the accessible care they need and the respect they deserve.

hank you for registering for Cornucopia. We are looking forward to hosting you for a fabulous evening that celebrates our legacy of providing complete care to those in need throughout the 43 communities we serve. Emceed by Erin Ward, the evening will highlight the important work that Sun River Health does throughout the communities we serve and spotlight our new fund “Food As Medicine,” which highlights vital support services that provide food and nutrition counseling to assist patients in managing their health. Access to complete, high-quality health care services is critical for promoting and maintaining health. Your participation in the event is vital to ensuring that the most vulnerable members of our communities — whether they live in the Hudson Valley, New York City or Long Island — continue to receive the services they need and the respect they deserve. You truly make a difference in the lives of those we care for and are an important member of the Sun River Health family. Thank you for your continuing support. Sincerely,
Anne Kauffman Nolon

Sun River Health Foundation The Sun River Health Foundation was founded when a group of community members recognized the need for Sun River Health to increase its resources to support expansion in order to meet the growing needs of the region’s most vulnerable populations, including agricultural workers. Incorporated in 2001, the Sun River Health Foundation was created with the mission of cultivating philanthropic relationships to raise charitable dollars, community awareness, and increase access for people in need of high quality primary and preventive care. Your support allows us to build on our commitment to address the complex needs of our most vulnerable community members through innovation, evidence-based programs, and our compassionate staff.

2021 CORNUCOPIA HONOREE
Crist Brothers Orchard Crist Brothers Orchards is a fifth generation family farm located in Walden, NY. Starting as a general farm in 1883, James and Nina Crist began transitioning the farm to its current focus on apples in 1927. In 1976 Jeffrey Crist joined the family business and “Crist Bros. Orchards, Inc.” a closely held family corporation was formed. After marrying Joy, the 4th generation continued to seek out ways to improve. Jeff pursued test trials with Cornell & the Hudson Valley Laboratory to improve integrated pest management and horticultural practices while Joy led efforts to modernize as manager of the office and packinghouse. In keeping with the improvement and innovation theme, Jeff is a founding member of a New York grower cooperative, Crunch Time Apple Growers, who purchased the intellectual property rights of two amazing new apple varieties (SnapDragon and RubyFrost) from Cornell University. Currently, the farm operates 750 acres of orchards, producing around 600,000 bushel per year, with approximately 80 people employed year-round - that number increases to about 200 employees during the harvest season. Crist Brothers grows premium varieties like Honeycrisp, Gala, Fuji, and Pink Lady which are distributed in major grocery stores throughout the Northeastern United States. In 2015, the Crist’s began a partnership with Angry Orchard, a leader in development and production of hard cider across the United States and beyond. Crist Brothers maintains the orchards for their flagship tasting house in Walden. These orchards have been transitioned to heritage as well as newly developed cider varieties resulting in a vast array of exciting ciders for every drinking desire. The fifth generation began full time farming in 2010 when Jenny Crist Kohn began managing payroll and all financial records, as well as utilizing her Spanish daily to supervise orchard operations. Joel Crist, who joined full time in 2015, now manages daily packinghouse and growing operations. Jenny and Joel are the key to the farm viability now and into the future, planning every step in innovation and automation for the best apples in the world. The Crist family depend on and appreciate their amazing staff of dedicated and smart individuals, who continue to help the Crists incorporate new technology into the art of growing superb apples, while maintaining their leadership in the industry. The Crist Family would like to express their sincere thanks to their team. 13
17th Annual Cornucopia Emcee Erin Ward
2021 Cornucopia Emcee
14
We are so happy to welcome celebrity benefit auctioneer, Erin Ward to emcee this year’s Cornucopia gala and lead our Fund-A-Need. Erin is the president of the New York City Auctioneering Association, and is an activist for world inclusivity. This famous third-generation auctioneer is known for producing record fundraising results and has raised millions for non-profits globally. A Long Island resident who began her career in the nonprofit world, Erin realized she could combine the two career paths – philanthropy and auctioneering – a light bulb went off. She had found her calling and true career path – being able to use fundraising and auctioneering skills to help nonprofits raise money for worthy causes really spoke to her sense of purpose. She immediately signed up for auctioneering school, and the rest is history! When Erin created Star Benefit Auctions 15 years ago, there were only somewhere between 5-10 other fundraising auction companies in existence. Star Benefit Auctions is the first ever Woman owned and operated Fundraising Auction Company in New York City. Erin’s goal was to work together to bring guest awareness to an organization while raising money in a happy, easy way while making guests feel excited. Start Benefit Auctions was born to make the nonprofit the Star of its gala, to make the cause and the donors shine and to allow the non-profit to dream of a world-changing becoming a fundable reality. Erin wanted to create a company that a development team could trust with their perfect moment and help it shine. Like us, she believes that donors are important and connecting with more donors means long-term success. It means making guests feel great is the best part of a gala. Events are made to bring a community together for the greater good of humankind. Guests come together for 1 reason...they believe in your mission. Erin and Star Benefit Auctions are excited to help make the most of each moment at tonight’s event.

Fund-A-Need
Food AS Medicine 20
The Fund-A-Need portion of our evening provides you with the opportunity to learn more about key programs and allows you to invest in and help fund vital services for patients who rely on us for their health care.Access to complete, quality health care services is critical for promoting and maintaining health, preventing and managing disease, and achieving health equity for all within our communities. This complete person-centered support includes addressing our patients basic need for nourishment and guidance in making sound nutritional choices. What we choose to eat has profound effects on our overall health. Research shows that dietary habits influence disease risk. Affordable access to healthy food is critical not just to preventing and treating dietrelated health conditions, but also to building thriving communities, strong local economies, and sustainable food systems. Sun River Health partners with many community organizations to ensure patients have access to healthy food. Support for the “Food As Medicine” fund will help provide direct food distribution as well as nutrition counseling services to assist in management of our patient’s health needs. Further funding would enable us to expand these programs and better serve the community. Your support ensures that our patients and families continue to have access to the vital food and nutrition services they need and deserve.

I love the meals - they’re always delicious, fantastic, healthy. When I get to a point when I don’t have much food left it’s always good to know that I can come to Sun River and I can have dinner. - Krissy
During COVID I came [to Sun River Health] everyday to eat, Monday through Friday. The food that they offer is very nutritious, healthy, and fulfilling. - Marvin
22
The food program is excellent because it does provide two meals a day. For some people that may be the only two meals they receive a day. The meals are wellbalanced - you’ll have your protein, your carbohydrates, and your vegetables. - Donna
I take the clients to the farmers market every Saturday and I try to show them how to eat healthier. We bring [the vegetables] back to Sun River and I show them how to cook them and they can actually taste them. By giving clients that access, that knowledge, they can take that back home with them they can eat better and have better health outcomes. - Franklin Lee, Sun River Health Senior Dietician
23
I like it when we come and get our two meals, but it also brings us to where we see each other. It’s that camaraderie where we can have time to embrace each other, talk to each other, and laugh. - Oscar
During the pandemic I lost my job, so I couldn’t buy food or pay my rent. After talking to [Sun River Health Nutritionist] Solange, she introduced me to the food program in Peekskill. That has been excellent - I get vegetables and fruits that I really like to eat. - Evelyn
24
I definitely enjoy the meals, because they’re healthy, they’re nutritious, and they give you an outlet if you fall short by spending your food stamps and you run out of food. You know you can always come to Sun River and get a breakfast and lunch. - Glenn
As a nutritionist, we ask a lot of questions. We help [our patients] get to the root of the problem and help them to make changes that will impact their health in the long term. - Solange Muller, Sun River Health Nutritionist
