Here are some helpful ideas that will help you save some money on your next heating bill this winter. Just by using portable heaters, or more specific, infrared heaters you'll be able to cut costs significantly. What I started to do last season, and will expand upon this season, is use infrared heat in rooms that I use more frequently. In my case it's a finished basement, a sitting room upstairs and a sunroom off our family room. I've closed the registers so I'm not heating the areas when it's not in use. I put one of the portable infrared heaters in each room. I only turn the heaters on when I'm using the area; they heat the rooms very quickly and seem to cost very little to run. So, rather than heating the whole house all the time, I'm only heating the main areas that we live in every day with the furnace and the secondary areas with the Infrared heaters. Based on my budget, I believe I'm saving about 15% to 20% on my heating bills. If I see the same type of savings this year I'll probably expand their use to the bedrooms. There are bunch of options on the market and a wide range of performance and prices. I prefer the ones that are "mini" portable furnaces. The units I bought were from LifeSmart and I bought them online. They can also be found at retail outlets. I hope this helps you save a few dollars this year...in these times every penny saved helps To summarize here is a helpful checklist you can use to save energy on your next bill. • Use infrared heaters only where they are needed. • Turn on the heater only when you're in the area, instead of heating the whole house. • Choose mini or portable heaters, as they are easier to move around. • Turn off the heaters when they are not in use. • Choose heaters that heat the room evenly • Close vents / registers, so the heat does not escape. I hope this checklist will help you conserve energy, and save you money.
