Cruises are an enduringly popular type of holiday for anyone who can afford to go on one, not least because of the wide range of places they bring you to. In fact, it is possible to decide whether you think you would like to go on a cruise simply by answering one simple question - does waking up in a different port every morning (or near enough to that) sound like something you could get used to? For some it sounds like the tenth circle of Hell, but for a growing number of people the chance to experience so many different places within the same holiday is something not to be missed. Cruises are becoming available to a wider section of the market and though there is no doubt that this is great news, there is the very real question of how to ensure quality control with the greater number of cruises on offer to cater for this wider market. One area in which you need to be extra careful is the optional extras included in some cruise packages. Any cruise worth its salt will give you the option to go on several day trips to places nearby to your landing port. At least some of these will be worth going on, but if you try to go on all of them you will find that it leaves a large hole in your budget and you feeling worn out. Before you go on a cruise, look at the optional day trips, decide which ones are most to your taste, which ones you can fit in and which ones you'd be happy enough to miss. Remembering that you pay for each day trip you are booked on, whether you eventually attend or not, you can drop any of these from the list and spend a relaxing afternoon either on board the cruise ship catching up on some sleep, soaking up the sun, or in the nearby port town checking out its attractions without having to pay for any extras. Remember one key point - the cruise ship company will arrange everything for you if you want them to because it is profitable for them to do so. Though many people are happy to leave this part of the arrangements to the cruise company, they are effectively paying a premium for doing less groundwork. Do this groundwork yourself and you will save money. Additional ways to save money are also available. Many people on booking a cruise decide that they will take up the option of a "cruise card". This is used to pay for drinks and meals on board, putting these items on a "tab"-style bill that you settle after the trip. If you instead choose to pay by cash for such items, it is easier to keep an eye on your spending, and saving money is more or less inevitable if you are keeping a closer eye on how much you spend. By looking through the brochure or other literature connected to the cruise you should be able to find various other hidden costs which can be avoided, and save yourself quite a lot of money. Remember this, and you can concentrate on enjoying a holiday that should be remembered for the right reasons rather than how long you spent paying it off.
