very resort on the Strip seems to have a steakhouse—some more than one—so it’s only natural to wonder which steakhouse in Las Vegas serves the most succulent cuts of beef. While it’s hard to pick just one, these three restaurants definitely know how to cook up a steakhouse experience that’s always well done.
CARNEVINO ITALIAN STEAKHOUSE AT THE PALAZZO
Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich’s interpretation of a classic Italian steakhouse is sure to impress even the biggest steak aficionado. Showcasing a menu of all-natural cuts of beef that have been aged in the restaurant’s dry-aging facility well beyond other steakhouses, like the 120-day Dry-Aged New York Strip, steaks are rubbed with sea salt, black pepper and fresh rosemary for a slightly charred crust. Sliced at the table, they are then drizzled in olive oil and sprinkled with a dash of sea salt for optimum flavor. Paired with the rich Mascarpone & Guanciale Mashed Potatoes and a glass of wine from the sommelier, guests are guaranteed an extraordinary dinner. Looking for more beef? Then start your meal with the luscious Carne Cruda Alla Piemontese: chopped-to-order steak tartare made with filet mignon. carnevino.com
PHIL’S ITALIAN STEAK HOUSE AT TREASURE ISLAND
A throwback to Vegas’ vintage steakhouses, this relaxed upscale restaurant offers an array of steaks aged a minimum of 30 days. Guests will surely find a cut of beef, like the well-marbled 44-ounce Ribeye Chop for two that comes to the table sliced and topped with wild onion Plugra butter, to savor. Regardless of which steak you choose, no visit is complete without trying the French Onion Soup made with Gruyère and Swiss cheese. A longtime favorite, the soup is made from a recipe that’s been on property for almost two decades! treasureisland.com/ restaurant/1/phils-italian-steak-house
TOM COLICCHIO’S HERITAGE STEAK AT THE MIRAGE
Featuring a selection of antibiotic-free meats prepared over a wood-fired grill, this sleek steakhouse from the famed “Top Chef” judge is sure to be tops with taste buds. In addition to traditional cuts like the 24-ounce Dry-Aged Porterhouse, guests can choose from a variety of Wagyus like the flavorful tabasco-peppered American Skirt Steak. The restaurant’s bold flavors carry over to an assortment of starter dishes and sides, such as the Heirloom Tomato salad made with chili-braised cashews, grilled avocado and tarragon vinaigrette and the Spicy Onion Rings served with a white BBQ sauce. mirage.com/en/restaurants/tom-colicchio-sheritage-steak.html

Located alongside Lake Jacqueline, diners can watch the swans glide by while enjoying an affordable bottle of vino from the adjoining wine shop and live music on select nights. Guaranteeing something for everyone to relish, the dinner menu features both French fare and Mediterranean cuisine, including palatepleasing pasta selections like the Braised Beef Ravioli made with oyster mushrooms and a black truffle cream. Other delightful dishes include the flavorful Truffled Goat Cheese Napoleon—layered puff pastry with goat cheese, pistachios, honey, arugula and frisée—and the savory Roasted Scottish Salmon with a brown garlic butter sauce. MICHAEL’S AT SOUTH POINT HOTEL, CASINO AND SPA
The very definition of Strip-worthy dining, this intimate gourmet room moved off-Strip from Barbary Coast (now the site of The Cromwell) in 2007. Although it can be easy to fill up on the complimentary vegetable platter guests receive upon being seated (diners also receive a bowl of fruit at the end of their meal with dessert), be sure to save enough room for the delicious Cream of Fresh Tomatoes soup— it’s long been a staff favorite! southpointcasino. com/dining/michaels-gourmet-room

This popular chain recently opened its first two locations in Las Vegas: one near Silverton Casino and the other in North Las Vegas. Known for its hearty homestyle meals, guests can enjoy breakfast all day as well as an extensive selection of lunch and dinner dishes—including Country Fried Steak—starting at 11 a.m. For a taste of some of the restaurant’s finest fare, try the Cracker Barrel Sampler which comes with Chicken n’ Dumplins, Meatloaf and Country or Sugar-Cured Ham, and indulge in a slice of the moist Double Chocolate Fudge Coca-Cola Cake for dessert. Given that the nearest Cracker Barrel used to be in Arizona, there’s often a wait, but there’s a charming country store for guests to peruse and pass the time. crackerbarrel.com
HOUSE OF BLUES RESTAURANT INSIDE MANDALAY BAY
Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, this famed eatery hits all the right notes with its comfort food and Creole classics. During the evening hours, guests can enjoy complimentary live entertainment while savoring such flavorful selections as the Voodoo Shrimp, simmered in an amber beer reduction, and the smoked St. Louis Ribs. Other must-tries include the Soul Cluckin’ Good chicken marinated in buttermilk and sweet BBQ spice, and the Chicken Gumbo. Made with chicken, andouille sausage, bell peppers, okra, onions and gumbo filé, taste buds will think they traveled to New Orleans to get this delicious dish! houseofblues.com/lasvegas/restaurant
DOUBLE BARREL ROADHOUSE AT MONTE CARLO
Serving generous portions of Southern-inspired fare at an affordable price, this Strip-front restaurant boasts some of the best barbecue in Las Vegas. All of its meats are marinated for 24 hours and then smoked for up to five hours and grilled on a mixture of peach wood, apple wood and mesquite charcoal, guaranteeing each bite is tender and flavorful. Whatever entrée you decide on (Sunseeker recommends the Beef Brisket), be sure to start your lunch or dinner with an order of the lightly breaded Boneless Chicken Bites— paired with Double Barrel’s signature honey hot sauce, they might just be the best boneless chicken wings on the Strip! sbe.com/nightlife/ brands/doublebarrel

Scott Moreau as Johnny Cash in “Million Dollar Quartet”
A MILLION DOLLAR PERFORMANCE SCOTT MOREAU KEEPS A LEGACY ALIVE IN “MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET” By Heather Turk
E

ven though he always dreamt of being a professional baseball player, actor Scott Moreau decided to set his sights on the stage after seeing a performance of “Les Misérables” in high school. While the talented performer has yet to play his dream role, Javert, in that musical, he has realized one of his other dreams: playing Johnny Cash in the Tony Awardwinning musical “Million Dollar Quartet.” Based on a true story, “Million Dollar Quartet” takes place on Dec. 4, 1956, when Sun Records founder Sam Phillips brought Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins together at the Sun Records storefront studio in Memphis for the first and only time. Featuring such timeless tracks as “Blue Suede Shoes” and “Folsom Prison Blues,” this toe-tapping production allows audiences to watch one of the greatest nights in music history unfold. “This show is the best of both worlds—it’s a musical and a rock concert,” Moreau told Sunseeker. “While the music is the main selling point (the cast actually plays all of their own instruments), many fans are surprised by this story that they didn’t really know about before.” Moreau joined the Vegas cast earlier this year after being with the first national tour for four years. A longtime fan of the “Man in Black” singer-songwriter, he’s worked hard to keep Cash’s legacy alive. “I’ve been fortunate to meet a lot of people who were a part of Johnny’s life and they’ve all been very supportive,” Moreau said. “No one is going to say I sound just like him because they spent their life with him, but they notice the nuances I put into my performance. To hear them say ‘You reacted just the way he would’ in a scene is a real compliment.”
The finale of “Million Dollar Quartet”
Moreau’s commitment to the part never shows more than when he performs his favorite solo number in the production, “I Walk the Line.” “The song had a lot of personal meaning to Johnny, so it’s always a challenge,” Moreau stated. “I’m always trying to perfect it and sound closer to him. I never want to just be going through the motions.” “Million Dollar Quartet” runs Sunday through Friday at 8 p.m. with an additional 5:30 p.m. performance Sunday and Monday at Harrah’s Las Vegas; final performances are on Dec. 4. Tickets start at $62.70, plus applicable fees. For more information, visit mdqvegas.com. ENTERTAINMENT

one of Las Vegas’ other long-running headliners, who was partially responsible for bringing Blue Man Group to Las Vegas. “Teller and I saw Blue Man Group in New York City in the early ‘90s and were blown away by its brilliance, beauty and funkiness,” said magician Penn Jillette, who can be seen performing with Teller at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. “We loved it and still do. After the show we told [original Blue Men] Chris (Wink), Matt (Goldman) and Phil (Stanton) that they needed to take the show to Vegas and everywhere else because, unlike Penn & Teller, they could train other people for their roles. I said, ‘Believe me, if we could put Penn & Teller paint on people, our show would be everywhere!’ Vegas was changing and the time was right for Blue Man Group to join the scene in the desert. I’m so glad we were a part of that.” This November marks the 25th anniversary of Blue Man Group’s first euphoric performance at the Astor Place Theatre in New York City. Since then, the award-winning production has performed in more than 15 countries and has been seen by more than 35 million people worldwide. The Blue Men have truly become a part of the pop culture zeitgeist as well, serving as the face of branding campaigns, making countless appearances on hit TV shows and contributing to numerous film and television scores. Much to the delight of fans, Blue Man Group shows no signs of slowing down a quarter of a century later, having recently released a new album, THREE, and their first-ever book, Blue Man World. Fans can actually hear two songs from THREE performed exclusively in Las Vegas. Shows run nightly, dark Dec. 5 and 6. Allegiant passengers receive special deals when they purchase their tickets onboard. Ask your flight attendant for details.

t’s hard to imagine the Entertainment Capital of the World without Blue Man Group. The popular production has been a staple of the Strip for 16 years, returning last November to the property that first introduced the drumming vaudevillians to Las Vegas audiences: Luxor Hotel and Casino. On Aug. 19 the show celebrated its 10,000th performance, a truly astonishing feat given how many productions don’t even make it to their first anniversary in such a competitive market. The show’s charm isn’t lost on anyone who has seen it before, though—especially

THE BEAUTY OF “KÀ” A BEHIND-THE-SCENES LOOK AT THIS EXTRAORDINARY SHOW By Heather Turk

A
jaw-dropping spectacle from start to finish, Cirque du Soleil’s “KÀ” at MGM Grand might be best known for its acrobatics and martial arts, but there’s more to the $165 million production than the 80 talented artists that audiences see perform each night. Featuring such interesting elements as sewage pipes painted to look like tree trunks and the world’s largest indoor airbag, “KÀ” is a production unlike any other. Part of its uniqueness, according to the show’s operations production manager, Yago Pita Alvarez, is its lack of a traditional stage, which is instead replaced with seven moving platforms. The most impressive platform is unquestionably the 25-footby-50-foot steel Sand Cliff Deck, powered by four hydraulic cylinders noticeable from the roof of the resort that run on 7,500 gallons of vegetable oil.
pounds of organic cork to emulate sand during the beach scene. The cork is moisturized between 72 and 74 percent humidity at the silo-like Cork Treatment Facility backstage so it doesn’t disintegrate or become too moist. There’s always an extra 2,000 pounds of cork on hand, too, just in case one batch becomes too wet or dry to use during a performance. Even though it takes 100 technicians to run the production each night, Alvarez’s favorite scene requires only a light, a wall and two pairs of hands. “I find it beautiful, super original and really touching,” Alvarez said of the Shadow Play scene. “When you sit in the audience, they’re all very immersed in what’s happening and wondering how [the artists] do it. I assure you 10 percent go back home and give it a shot.”
“The Sand Cliff Deck is an architectural success,” Alvarez told Sunseeker. “It can travel up and down, spin and tilt all at the same time, plus it has pegs that shoot out of it, projections on it— it’s the Millennium Falcon of entertainment.”
Of course, that’s part of “KÀ’s” appeal: for all of its complexities, it still manages to find the beauty in something as simple as hand shadows or a solo baton performer.
While the Sand Cliff Deck is amazing, even something as small as a grain of sand is extraordinary in “KÀ.” Each show uses 2,000

GRIT AND GLAMOR LAS VEGAS-STYLE CHECK OUT OUR WRANGLER NATIONAL FINALS RODEO FAN GUIDE By Brian Hurlburt
W
hen Pat Christenson, president of Las Vegas Events, the promoter of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR), was asked to describe this event, he came up with fitting words that bring to life a truly special Las Vegas sporting experience. “To rodeo fans and fans of the country lifestyle, the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is like Disneyland,” Christenson said. “When I went to Disneyland with my kids we couldn’t see it all in one day. It took three or four days. When you go there, you have to map out your trip. The same goes for the Wrangler NFR. “The competition at the Thomas & Mack is the best choreographed championship event in sports,” continued Christenson. “Fans can start the night at more than 40 different properties

showing the action or watch it live. The NFR experience gives you 10 days with a plethora of options that start at nine every morning and go until you drop.” There is something for everyone during the Wrangler NFR from Dec. 1-10. Fans can watch the action live at the newly renovated Thomas & Mack and enjoy everything else that happens at the home arena. Events there include live music nightly at the Cowboy Corral, the CBS Sports Network pre-show and hospitality area inside The ‘Shoe with stunning views of the Las Vegas Strip, plus The Corral Saloon and the NFR Fan Zone. The NFR is one of Las Vegas’ most fun, exciting and interactive annual events, and you don’t have to attend the actual rodeo to feel like you are a part of the action. Several casinos offer live viewing parties on big screen TV’s, bringing together fans and creating an exciting arenalike atmosphere. Fans can also catch shows performed by superstar entertainers on and off the Strip, as all of Las Vegas goes country during the Wrangler NFR! Check out pages 54 and 55 for a list of official events and shows. For many, Cowboy Christmas and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation’s (RMEF) Hunter & Outdoor Expo are must-attend attractions. See page 52 for all of the details on these megaevents featuring an amazing array of western fare, food and interactive features.

Trying to fit in everything offered during the 10 days of events is nearly impossible, but with the help of this Fan Guide, it can be a little easier. So, whether you are attending the Wrangler NFR at the Thomas & Mack Center or at a viewing party at your favorite resort, here’s what you need to know. The Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is the richest and most prestigious rodeo in the world, and it has been held in Las Vegas for over 30 years. The Wrangler NFR attracts the top 15 contestants in bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing and bull riding. Under the new contract with the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, the purse in the 2016 event will jump to $10 million. Here’s a look at the main events:
BAREBACK BRONC RIDING
For a ride to be scored, the cowboy must stay on the horse for eight seconds. Cowboys are judged on their control and spurring technique while the horse is judged on power, speed and agility. The only thing separating a cowboy from a hard fall to the dirt is a rope in his hands.
The nightly Grand Entry is a stunning and inspiring beginning to a memorable event
BULL RIDING
This is the granddaddy rodeo event of them all. Man vs. beast. Cowboy vs. conqueror. Over the years some of the most memorable showdowns in the sport have come from this event, where a cowboy straps tightly onto the back of a bull and attempts to survive for eight seconds while the 2,000-pound beast bucks and jumps wildly. This exciting event closes the show nightly.
TEAM ROPING
This is a timed event otherwise known as heading and heeling, and is the most precise event in the competition. Two mounted cowboys (a header and a heeler) work together to lasso a steer with a rope on the head and the heel. They must work cohesively to accomplish this task.
BARREL RACING
This female event is based on time. The cowgirl, mounted on a horse, comes racing out from underneath the arena and makes a series of sharp turns around three barrels in a cloverleaf pattern. Fast paced action, for sure, and crowd noise swells as a great ride unfolds. Check NFRexperience.com for party and event schedules plus competition times. WRANGLER NFR

Other menu must-tries include the flavorful Blue ’N’ Blackened Burger, a Cajunspiced beef patty topped with lettuce, tomato, fried onions and blue cheese sauce served on an onion bun, and the delicious Southern Fried Twinkies served with whipped cream and strawberry sauce. Ronnie Dunn, Reba and Kix Brooks performing their hit residency, “REBA, BROOKS & DUNN: Together In Las Vegas”
“ REBA, BROOKS & DUNN: TOGETHER IN LAS VEGAS ” RETURNS
JUST IN TIME FOR THE WRANGLER NATIONAL FINALS RODEO By Heather Turk
One of the Entertainment Capital of the World’s most unique productions, this star-studded residency features two of country music’s hottest acts sharing the stage for one unforgettable show. Now in its second year at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, “REBA, BROOKS & DUNN: Together in Las Vegas” returns for six can’t-miss performances Nov. 30 and Dec. 2, 3, 7, 9 and 10 at 7:30 p.m. The show features more than 30 of the country superstars’ greatest hits, including Reba’s “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia” and Brooks & Dunn’s “Boot Scootin’ Boogie.” Backed by a band comprised of 10 members from both acts’ touring bands, Reba and Brooks & Dunn perform together and separately throughout the 90-minute production. While hearing Reba and Brooks & Dunn perform such hit songs as Brooks & Dunn’s “Play Something Country” and Reba’s “Why Haven’t I Heard from You” together is obviously a treat for fans, seeing the chemistry these three longtime friends have onstage is worth the ticket price alone. Fans will hear some great stories throughout the show, like when Ronnie Dunn recalls the time his youngest daughter wanted a horse and Reba called him in the middle of the 58
WRANGLER NFR
night to say if he didn’t buy her one, she would and send him the bill, before singing “Cowgirls Don’t Cry.” There are a couple of poignant moments throughout the production, too, like when Reba performs the song she played at her father’s funeral, “Just Like Them Horses,” as the music video filmed on the McEntire family ranch, featuring Reba’s mom, plays on a giant screen behind her, or when Reba and Brooks & Dunn are joined onstage by members of the military during the show’s patriotic finale, “Only in America.” Not to forget fans of her classic TV show, Reba sings the theme song from “Reba,” “I’m a Survivor,” at one point during the production. Tickets to see “REBA, BROOKS & DUNN: Together in Las Vegas” range from $59.50 to $205, plus applicable fees. The show consistently sells out, so be sure to reserve your seats as soon as possible. T
he metro Phoenix area’s holiday spirit abounds. Seasonal festivals and celebrations all around town bring winter wonderlands to life using millions of colorful, dancing lights. From giant glowing Santa statues to luminous boats at sail to enormous radiating Christmas trees, the season may not be snowy but it’s certainly illuminated. Here are a few signature events.
TEMPE FANTASY OF LIGHTS
Bustling downtown Tempe is home to Arizona State University’s main campus, an array of shops and restaurants, and a thriving nightlife scene. During the holiday season, millions of colored lights are entwined throughout the area,

creating a colorful glow and festive mood. The opening night parade, on November 26, begins at 6 p.m. More than 35,000 people will gather to march down Mill Avenue enjoying live music and holiday fare. Even Tempe Town Lake comes alive in light, with a boat parade featuring colorful vessels. When the parades finish, a towering 60-foot Christmas tree is lit. Visitors can enjoy the lights nightly throughout November and December. downtowntempe.com
ZOO LIGHTS
From late November through early January, the Phoenix Zoo hosts a large addition of special animals. Unlike the living, breathing residents who make the zoo their year-round home, these creatures are man-made, illuminated versions that inhabit areas throughout the large compound. When the sun goes down, the entire zoo, from the entry bridge to the massive trees, becomes a lustrous visual experience that brings out visitors in droves. For many local folks, it’s a can’t-miss annual tradition. Sip a hot chocolate while viewing the zoo’s fascinating inhabitants. phoenixzoo.org
TUMBLEWEED TREE LIGHTING AND PARADE OF LIGHTS
This year marks the 60th anniversary of Chandler’s unique holiday tradition—the building of the Tumbleweed Tree. The Tumbleweed Tree is composed of nearly 1,000-flocked tumbleweeds that are collected over the course of a year. When enough have been gathered, they are placed on a 25-foot frame, spray painted white and covered in glitter. Making it even more spectacular, the Tumbleweed Tree is adorned with over 1,200 lights. In early December, a beautiful Parade of Lights kicks off the tree lighting ceremony to set this one-of-a-kind tree aglow. Chandler is the only city in the Southwestern United States with a Tumbleweed Tree, drawing visitors from far and wide during the holiday season. chandleraz.gov RECREATION

T
he exchanging of gifts is certainly a rewarding aspect of the holiday season, but it’s the coming together of friends and family that really makes it a special time of year. Holiday meals are often the congregation point where conversation and laughs are shared. In the Southwest, it’s a common tradition for holiday dinner fare to include tamales. This traditional Mesoamerican dish features masa (a starchy dough, usually corn-based), often with either savory or sweet fillings, steamed in a disposable banana leaf or cornhusk. The process of making tamales is complex and a great team endeavor. If you’re strapped for time and want to leave it to the experts, many Phoenix area restaurants have got you covered. Here are three where pre-ordered deliciousness can be part of your seasonal fun.
Stacks of stuffed corn tamales to go at Old El Paso Tamales
OLD EL PASO TAMALES TO GO
This Mesa restaurant’s name says it all. Using a generations-old family recipe, their “Nearly World Famous Tamales” are made fresh daily. Walk-in visitors can get their chunky husks of corn stuffed with meaty favorites like beef, chicken and pork. For those seeking vegetarian options, fillings include corn, green chile and spinach. The Spinach and the Sweet Tamales are only available by pre-order—and during the holidays, calling ahead is a good practice in general. oldelpasotamales.com
CAROLINA’S MEXICAN FOOD
Carolina’s is a Valley staple, serving tasty and inexpensive Mexican eats since 1968. They boast having the best tortillas in town and the hordes of people that come in daily to grab a bag to take home proves that they’re doing something right. Three varieties of tamales are on the menu: Red Beef, Green Chicken and Green Corn. And for orders bigger than a one-off, you can get them by the half or whole dozen. carolinasmex.com
Savor spicy New Mexican-style cuisine at Los Dos Molinos
LOS DOS MOLINOS
With locations in Phoenix, Mesa and Ahwatukee, Los Dos, as it’s commonly called, is a long-running establishment and a popular destination. The food here is well known for its New Mexican style—using Hatch chiles that add great flavor and lots of heat to the dishes. If you like your dinner delivered with a kick, their spicy tamales are a surefire way to crank up the heat on your festive meal. The fiery tamales can be ordered in Blue Corn, Green Corn and Red Chili. losdosmolinos.com DINING

The Mammoth Saloon is a popular Apache Trail lunch spot
WESTERN CHARMS ARE PLENTY ALONG THE APACHE TRAIL By Kate Wallace
T
he breathtaking Superstition Mountains provide a timeless backdrop to Mesa, Arizona’s third largest city. Ghostly and volcanic, these purple mountain majesties rise some 2,000 feet into the desert sky and serve as a gateway to the historic Apache Trail. Dotted with tempting roadside attractions, from cruising on a classic “Mark Twain” paddleboat to exploring a once thriving ghost town, visitors won’t want to miss the many odes to the good ol’ days along Highway 88. A day trip here promises adventure, new discoveries and many hidden treasures.
TREASURE HUNTING IN THE LAND OF LOST GOLD
TALES BOTH TALL AND TRUE
History buffs must explore the amazing Superstition Mountain Museum, which chronicles the tales (both tall and true) of Arizona’s Wild West. The museum’s curators have created one of the most comprehensive displays of the region’s geological history. The Elvis Presley Chapel, a restored movie set featured in the film El Charro, is a photo-worthy stop. To map out your Apache Trail road trip, head online to visitmesa.com.
The Elvis Presley Chapel at Superstition Mountain Museum
STAGECOACH STOPS AND SECLUDED WATERWAYS
As you go further along the Apache Trail, visitors will stumble upon the tiny Tortilla Flat stagecoach stop settlement that once boasted a hotel, general store and saloon. Most people are lured here to taste their famous “Killer Chili”. The hot stuff is poured atop just about every dish, including omelets, fries, burgers and burritos. This is the perfect spot to fill up before 80

Watch Wild West reenactments at Goldfield Ghost Town
Mammoth Saloon by Julie Foskett/Visit Mesa; Elvis Presley Chapel and Goldfield Ghost Town courtesy of Visit Mesa
Goldfield Ghost Town invites travelers from around the world to step back in time and roam the dusty streets of this once thriving gold mining town. More than a century ago, Goldfield was a bustling little outpost whose first recorded gold strike was made in 1892. Today, modern day prospectors are still heading into these legendary hills looking for ‘lost gold’ believed to be left behind by Jacob Waltz, the Lost Dutchman. While here, stop in at Motherlode Mercantile for a taste of their popular prickly pear fudge, flavored with the nectar of the delectable bright pink cactus fruit. Head underground and experience what life was like for miners as they blasted caps in the dark, or catch daily reenactments of Arizona’s lawless territorial days in the center of town.

The one-of-a-kind escalator through an aquarium tank
MARINE LIFE IN THE DESERT THE SOUTHWEST’S LARGEST AQUARIUM OPENS IN SCOTTSDALE By Teresa Bitler
W
ith more than two million gallons of water and 30,000 marine animals, the newly opened OdySea Aquarium in Scottsdale is the largest aquarium in the Southwest, and features six attractions you won’t find anywhere else, beginning with the 12 sphere-shaped tanks suspended from the lobby ceiling. Meant to symbolize a drop of water and the beginning of a journey, each one contains colorful fish and weighs 7,500 pounds. Continue your journey by making a detour into the bathrooms just off the lobby, where you’ll find the second unique attraction. A glass wall allows you to watch sharks in the adjacent tank as you wash your hands. (Don’t worry, they’re not really interested in what you’re doing!)
Upstairs, past the fresh water fish and Asian small-clawed otters, Odysea offers the chance to don a wet suit and a SeaTREK helmet and walk underwater through a tank filled with colorful reef fish for an additional charge. Although you can enjoy this scuba-like experience elsewhere in the United States, this is the only SeaTREK walk in the world that replicates a dive at the Great Barrier Reef. An escalator in an acrylic tube transports you from one level to the next through an enormous tank. You won’t find this escalator, or the martini glass-shaped tank on the second floor, anywhere else in the world, according to general manager Greg Charbeneau. That’s also true for the Living Sea Carousel, a 20-minute show rotating between three exhibits. After taking your place in a theaterstyle seat, you rotate to a tank for a talk given by one of the aquarium’s divers, followed by narrated stops at tanks displaying rescued sea turtles, sea lions and sharks.

The spectacular SeaTREK experience
In addition to theses one-of-a–kind attractions, highlights include touch tanks in the Shores Gallery, an acrylic tunnel through a tank showcasing more Great Barrier Reef fish and the African black-footed penguins exhibit, where you can meet Pip, Polly and the whole OdySea penguin family. General admission also includes a 10-minute state-of-the-art 3D film that takes you on a remarkable journey with humpback whales and whale sharks. Stay until the very end when the screen rises to reveal the shark tank behind it.
Up close and personal with sharks
OdySea Aquarium is open 365 days a year from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday. For more information, visit odyseaaquarium.com. RECREATION

take you on vacation or to visit family and friends without the dedicated efforts of our stations team.
You see them and interact with them when you fly, but you may not realize just how much our stations team members do to make sure our operations run smoothly. Station agents are responsible for providing exceptional customer service while checking in passengers, boarding planes, assigning seats and loading bags. They’re also responsible for ground operations, aircraft cleaning and safety and security. In short, it’s their work that helps keep us going. With the goal to reach more than 100 cities, Allegiant team members, including managers and executives, hopped on hundreds of flights and stationed themselves at airports around the country to surprise thousands of our agents. They handed out goodie bags to all team members and expressed their appreciation to those who are constantly working behind the scenes and on the front lines for you, our travelers, and the rest of the Allegiant team.
Our stations team in Santa Maria got a surprise visit
“It was really important for us to recognize our stations teams. We know these surprise visits were just a small token of appreciation, but we want them to know we are so grateful for their continuous dedication,” said Keny Wilper, vice president of stations operations for Allegiant. “This was also a great opportunity for our team members from all departments across the system to experience and celebrate the daily effort that goes into each flight.” Even though September may be over, we continuously thank them as we could not 90

THANK YOU ALLEGIANT
I wanted to tell you that I have appreciated how wonderful your phone staff has been in answering my questions this week! They have been helpful and have put all of my concerns to rest. And thank you for the low cost opportunity for our large family to go to Hawaii.
– The Smith Family, Las Vegas
My husband and I flew you for the first time in April from Cincinnati to Tampa / St. Pete. We were initially nervous about flying a lower cost carrier as we have historically used Delta for most all of our trips. We had a great experience and thought the flight attendants were wonderful!
– Elsie G., Hawaii
I sent an email asking for help with a rebate. On Saturday, I decided to phone Customer Care and sat patiently on the phone and eventually an Allegiant Air representative named Alison took my call. Calmly and professionally she addressed my issue and assured me that she could correct the error, which she did! The customer service she provided was outstanding and greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Since then, almost 600 Wish Kids have flown on Allegiant to their wish destinations, almost $400,000 in cash has been donated directly by Allegiant and over $270,000 has been donated by passengers through purchases of the Wingz Kids Snack Pack. LAS VEGAS LIKE A LOCAL EXPERIENCE LAS VEGAS WITH THESE LOCAL FAVORITES By Auriyon Butler & Judy Jauregui
E
ver wonder where the locals like to eat, drink and play in Las Vegas? Las Vegas is much like any other towns, but with the twist of having the Strip in the middle of it all. Our Sunseeker experts asked Allegiant team members from Las Vegas to share a few of their favorite things to do in this city that never sleeps. Don’t be blinded by the city lights, there are spectacular experiences and memories to be made in the city Allegiant calls home – Viva Las Vegas!
WATCH ABSINTHE
Allegiant employees love this show for its perfect combination of adult entertainment, comedy and Cirque du Soleil theatrics. This is a show that will make you laugh until you cry and leave your mouth gaping in awe. It’s no wonder why this show continues to receive rave reviews night after night. What happens in Vegas may stay in Vegas, but this is one secret that you’ll want to share once you leave.
District and public spaces such as the Downtown Container Park have brought life back to the area that is now much more than just Fremont Street. Along with the unique restaurants and great bars, there is truly something everyone can enjoy Downtown. You’ll also find some of the best local restaurants in Las Vegas here. Le Thai and Carson Kitchen are notable favorites.
DRIVE TO VALLEY OF FIRE STATE PARK
Two words describe the Valley of Fire State Park: simply beautiful. While many travelers may never leave Las Vegas Boulevard during their trip, there’s so much to experience beyond the Strip. The Valley of Fire State Park is a must-see in the region with its breathtaking sandstone formations and brightly hued cliffs. Experience the best of both worlds by planning a day trip to the Valley of Fire during your stay. Just an hour’s drive from the Strip, Valley of Fire State Park is easy to get to and wallet-friendly.
WINE AND DINE AT FERRARO’S
Located less than 10 minutes from the Strip, this local authentic restaurant will have you wishing you lived in Las Vegas, too. Enjoy live music from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. every Tuesday through Saturday, or sample their calamari during their daily happy hour from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Treat yourself to a great Italian dinner paired with a nice glass of red or white wine from their extensive wine selection. Catering to a town full of night owls, this restaurant is conveniently open until 2 a.m. to fulfill any late night pasta cravings.

TRAVELER INFORMATION SAFETY FIRST Customer safety is Allegiant ®’s first concern. Please be advised that interference with the duties of crew members, including flight attendants, is a violation of federal laws. Our crews are thoroughly trained in all safety procedures. To ensure your own safety, we hope you take a moment to review the safety information card located in the seat pocket in front of you. Be aware of the following: • Location of the nearest emergency exit • Location of your emergency oxygen mask, if needed • Correct procedure for exiting the cabin in an emergency SEAT BELTS Seat belts must be fastened ANY TIME the seat belt sign is on, during taxi, takeoff and landing. Once the seat belt sign is turned off, you may walk around the cabin. Due to unexpected turbulence, it is strongly recommended that you keep your seat belt fastened any time while in your seat. Allegiant’s exit seating policy does not allow the use of seat belt extensions in the exit seats due to tripping hazards. CHILD RESTRAINT SEATS Federal Aviation Administration requires that all child restraint seats used on planes meet federal safety standards. Acceptable seats bear proper labeling “THIS RESTRAINT IS CERTIFIED FOR USE IN MOTOR
VEHICLES AND AIRCRAFT” from the manufacturer. Unlabeled seats or seats manufactured before Jan. 1, 1981, are not acceptable. Child restraint seats are to be placed into a window seat and secured with an aircraft seat belt. PHOTOS & VIDEOS ONBOARD The use of small cameras or mobile devices for photography and video is permitted onboard provided you keep the purpose of your photography and video to capturing personal events. Photographing or recording other customers or airline personnel without their express consent is prohibited. Airline personnel reserve the right to prohibit photos and videos onboard the aircraft if it becomes a disturbance to them or other passengers. ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES Allegiant is forbidden to serve alcoholic beverages to anyone who appears to be intoxicated or who has not yet reached the age of 21. It is a violation of federal regulations to drink alcoholic beverages during a flight unless they have been served by Allegiant personnel. SMOKING Smoking, the use of other tobacco products, e-cigarettes and other similar smoking devices are not permitted on any Allegiant flight. Federal law imposes fines of $1,000 for smoking and up to $2,000 for any attempt to disable an aircraft smoke detector.
