Hello and welcome to first ever Sun Sports FC digital programme, which we hope to produce on a monthly basis throughout the rest of the season. We hope to promote the football club, not only around the Watford area but also further afield and will hopefully make some new friends and maybe even gain some new fans from around the world! In these programmes we will produce match reports and photos from the last month, some news of the under 18s side, a look back at some Sun matches in the past, as well as some fun moments! We hope that you will contact us and let us know how were getting on, if you have any ideas that you think we should try on here then we will look into it, and any feedback will be great (but please be gentle with us!!). A little bit about us, in case you want to know! Sun Sports FC are based in Watford, although currently playing in Bushey in Hertfordshire. The main team currently play in the Herts County League Division One but started the season in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division...three divisions higher and started this season in the FA Cup...its a long story!! The club started life as a printing companies football team back in 1921, although there are links to an earlier team that existed in Watford that amalgamated into what is now known as "The Sun".

We hope you enjoy what you see!!

Sun Sports - Herts County League - Nov. 2017 Second half rampage turns game for the Sun Sun Sports 6 Stevenage Borough Community 2 4th November 2017 Saturday's match at Aldenham Road started badly for the Sun, with Stevenage Borough Community scoring with their first attack in the early minutes of the match. This seemed to make the fellas in yella a might nervous and panicky, especially in defence and with a lot of passing in midfield going astray, it all helped to give SBC a helping hand which they took gratefully. Despite that, and the case of the notorious slippery pitch (not to make too many excuses) causing both sets of players to lose their footing, the Sun had the majority of control of the game, and when they did manage to string some passes together, they looked capable of coming back into the match.

But Stevenage were dangerous on the break, especially with their speedy left winger causing the Sun defence problems. As always, Ashley Lewis looked capable of causing some problems of his own and it looked like he had scored an equaliser but for a great stop from the SBC keeper, the ball rebounded out to George Minihan, whose left foot shot skimmed the crossbar. But before the Sun could draw level, Stevenage Borough Community went further ahead when a ball into the Sun area was dummied by one forward, leaving his colleague with a clear shot at goal, leaving Luke Furlong flat footed on the goal line. The two goal deficit seemed to finally rouse the Sun, and Ashley Lewis broke past two defenders and lashed a fierce shot into the SBC goal to make it 2-1 at the break. Toby Sakata and Ashley Lewis both had chances to draw the game level and there was then a scuffle due to a misjudged call by the SBC representative running the line after he had flagged for some uncertain decisions throughout the half But that had nothing to do with the Stevenage break in first half injury time when the SBC player breached the Sun defence and slotted the ball under the advancing Furlong only for the ball to hit the post and come back to safety. Instead of any hair dryer treatment at half time (rather difficult in the middle of a field), kind words and encouragement were spoken instead to the Sun players and they responded with a second half show. The Sun pushed hard at Stevenage early in the second half but it was the visitors who came close to scoring again when a shot, yet again from a clever break, was superbly saved by the fingertips of Luke Furlong. From the corner, Furlong punched the ball out, finding George Minihan, who, with his strength, shielded the ball from his marker, and put through a long pass to Ashley Lewis, who put in a cross finding Toby Sakata, but his header wasn't strong enough to threaten the keeper. But Toby soon used his head to good use, when a cross from Paolo Deritis was met by a brave diving header from Sakata to make it 2-2. Stevenage went straight down the other end from the restart and with only the Sun keeper to beat the Stevenage number eleven's shot went over Furlong, but clipped the bar and went over.

Luke Furlong was called into action soon after and made a fantastic reflex save in the six yard area to stop Stevenage going ahead again. Ashley Lewis picked up a pass and successfully lobbed the keeper but the Stevenage lino again put his flag up, causing more disruption among the Sun officials. The linesman then accused the Sun management of abusing him, although no such words were heard, and despite another Stevenage official offering to take over the line duties, the man refused. Ashley Lewis once again beat the opposition and passed the ball square to George Minihan who, despite two defenders closing down on him, remained cool enough to put the ball past the SBC keeper to put the Sun ahead for the first time in the match. Frustration crept in for Stevenage and one of their players was extremely lucky to stay on the pitch after diving in dangerously with both feet, which could have ruined a player's career. Unfortunately, the referee saw nothing and the player remained on the field of play. But the best way to retaliate is to score more, and this is what George Minihan did, scoring his second of the match after sneaking up at the back post to knock in a low, deep cross. Substitute Youssef Enajar, definitely one to keep an eye on for the future, showed vision by starting a one-two with fellow youth player and sub Callum Tobin and connected perfectly with his right foot as the ball flew into the Stevenage goal from the edge of the area to make it 5-2. Callum Tobin made his second assist of the afternoon soon after, after controlling the ball with his chest, he put a cross in from the left that found Ashley Lewis with a simple tap in to make it six. Callum could have pulled off a perfect game when he was put through on a one to one in injury time but he put his shot wide of the goal. Sun Sports are now fourth in the league and a win next Saturday could see the Sun move into second spot. Youtube highlights https://youtu.be/JxWKqN65UTE

Sun get "A Winaway" as "The Lions fail to bite" Hampstead Heath Lions 2 Sun Sports 5 11th November 2017 It must be said that the Sun are making rather hard work of getting their three points in this season’s Herts County League Division One campaign. A strong looking Sun side settled well eventually on the 3G pitch at Rowley Lane, but not before not knowing a) Where the opposition was b) What pitch they were due to play on c) Getting over the disappointment that they weren’t to play on the main pitch Despite it being a strong team on paper, a lot of passing from the Sun went astray early in the game, especially in midfield, where Hampstead Heath Lions (nothing at all to do with London Lions – whose grounds they share – purely coincidence, apparently) were happy to "pounce" on the loose balls and cause the Sun defence a few problems. The first chance fell to the home side but Luke Furlong pulled off a great save. The game seemed evenly matched but it looked like Watford’s finest would get a helping hand when the referee gave a penalty for a silly Lions challenge in the area. Up stepped Ashley Lewis to take the kick and although he hit the ball hard and low the Lions keeper chose the right way to dive and like a "cat" clawed the ball away. Lewis was involved again soon after when he floated in a peach of a cross finding Paolo Deritis unmarked on the right whose downward header was saved by the Lions goalie on the up-bounce. But the Lions showed their teeth by shocking the Sun and going a goal up halfway through the half when a cross sneaked through the Sun back line and was tapped in by a grateful forward to give the home side the lead. As quite often this season, the Sun like to give their opposition a goal or two advantage before waking up and putting the game to bed, and this match was no different. As the first half came to a close George Hobson laid the ball back to Ashley Lewis from an in-direct free kick in the penalty area and his shot went through the ineffective wall and into the net for an equaliser. Minutes later and Ashley had two goals to his name when he managed to get to the ball first during a goal line scramble to tap the ball over the line to give the Sun a half time lead. In the second half Hampstead looked dangerous and capable of equalising, but the Sun gave themselves a cushion thanks to George Hobson scoring direct from a corner…again!! This is the third time that George has managed this remarkable achievement already this season, and with all three goals being captured on video, with any luck they may be seen on Soccer AM soon! So three-one up and now fully in control, the Sun decided to finally put the Lions to sleep, and Ashley Lewis lashed in two great goals to get not only his hat trick, but a fourth goal of the game for himself to boot. 6

But after the Sun’s fourth, Lions pulled a goal back through a handball in the area which the Lions player successfully converted. Sun’s fifth goal though must be attributed to youngster Josh Connolly after some fantastical fancy footwork near the corner flag to bamboozle the Lions defender, and then sending a fine low cross into the area for Ashley to get hold of. It was also nice to see welcome returns for Karl Penny and Joe Horwood, who both came off the bench later in the second half. Sun Sports move up to third place in the league, but will face a tough test against Hadley Reserves next week at Aldenham Road.

7

All square home to Hadley Sun Sports 2 Hadley Reserves 2 18th November 2017 Sun Sports remain in 3rd spot in Division One after a thrilling 2-2 draw at home to Hadley Reserves on Saturday. For a while it seemed that the opposition weren’t going to turn up as while the Sun players were whiling away the time kicking a ball or two about, the ref seemed rather more worried as he jogged up and down the halfway line, giving the occasion sly glance at his watch while he did so. But eventually they turned up for the match, so the free three points for a walk-over home win were not to be. And so the match kicked off on a cold and drizzling afternoon in November, and the Sun obtained their first corner of the match after just 13 seconds. From the corner, George Hobson tested the Hadley keeper from the off and he tipped the ball over the bar for another corner, at the second attempt the keeper won the dual between corner taker and goalie by successfully punching the ball away. The Sun were certainly on the ball in the opening moments when Dan Regan floated over a cross finding Tom Herbert but his glancing header went wide. Hadley’s Ricky Burrows was the next to go close, but his shot curled over the crossbar. Next up was another George Hobson corner, who seemed determined to add another corner shot goal to his tally of three already this season, and this time it looked like it was going to happen when the Hadley keeper punched the ball down and under him and was headed off the line by a red shirted defender. From the resulting break Luke Furlong bravely came out to smother the ball on a one to one and came off the worst for wear but thankfully was able to continue. Mr Hobson was certainly the man of the moment when his free kick after 25 minutes was lobbed into the penalty area and left back Dan Regan rose to head the ball into the goal to give the Sun a well deserved lead. But instead of the fellas in yella scoring from a corner, it was Hadley who scored from that position when the ball from the set piece was headed in by Burrows to make it all level. And that goal seemed to turn the game as Hadley then took control of the game with the Sun defence becoming the busiest of players, getting in the way of the ball when required and clearing the ball away at the earliest opBut before the break the Sun had a couple of close chances when Joe Horwood powered a header just wide and the tenacious Josh Towle battled to get through three defenders but then while off balance his shot drifted away from goal. Hadley started the second half the strongest and kept possession while some of the Sun’s passing went astray a few times, but eventually the Sun players calmed down, and once Josh Connolly, playing at right back, was given the opportunity to push forward, the Sun had more chances to attack. George Minihan hit a free kick hard and low through the wall but the Hadley keeper was in the right place at the right time to get behind the ball. Minihan was there again to head an attempt at short range from Towle’s cross, but again the Hadley goalie was there to be in the way of a second goal for the Sun. 8

Both keepers made some great saves and kept their respective teams in with a chance of taking all three points, and it seemed that the goal to possibly win the game would go to the Sun when Josh Connolly was bundled over in the penalty area but the referee saw nothing wrong with the challenge, which could only be classed as a soft mugging!! Club captain Callum O’Connor hit a long range drive that the Hadley goalkeeper did well to tip just over the bar and George Minihan went close soon after but his shot hit the side netting. And with 15 minutes to go, a cross from the right found the silver fox of Hadley’s Ricky Burrows to head in from around six yards to give Hadley the lead. But Sun heads didn’t go down, and the fight for the right to get something out of the match proved strong when around five minutes later, a Hobson free kick found Callum O’Connor who headed the ball past the stranded keeper to draw the Sun level. Buoyed by the goal, the Sun went for it and tried to get another goal to give them the win and the chance to possibly to go top of the table, Dan Regan brought the ball forward, and, looking up, he launched a perfect long ball into the penalty area, finding sub Lewis Craze, who connected well to volley the ball goalbound, but again the Hadley keeper was there to spoil Sun’s plans of winning the game. So the Sun stay third, for the moment. YouTube highlights https://youtu.be/AlHPuyXQ-D0

Sun win in a close encounter of the cup kind

Wodson Park Reserves 0 Sun Sports 1 Aubrey Cup 1st Rd - 25th November 2017 An under strength Sun Sports travelled to Ware to face Wodson Park Reserves in the Aubrey Cup first round tie on Saturday and faced a tougher match then they probably expected. At Ware's answer to the Olympic Stadium, Sun wore an unusual all red strip, with a tinge of white instead of the yellow, and with white rings around the sleeves, they looked somewhat like a throwback to a Bayern Munich side of the 80's. However, that was as far as the resemblance went as they faced a tough task against an in-form Wodson Park reserve side. Josh Connolly was soon in the thick of it down the right side, and a cross into the six yard area was deflected by a Park defender, making the Wodson keeper flick a hand out to save the home side from going a goal down in the opening minutes. Wodson responded well by firing a shot from outside the area which Luke Furlong did well to get down to. After that the game fell into a spate of half chances for both sides but neither side could take advantage. A through ball from Josh Connolly found fellow Josh (Towle) who seemed to be in an onside position but the ref blew for offside, which was a pity as Mr Towle finished well with a looped effort finding the back of the net.

From a Connolly corner, Ben Howell rose to head the ball over the bar and soon after Josh Squires-Adams beat a couple of Wodson defenders and cut inside to lay the ball to Josh Towle whose shot left the Park keeper flat footed but the ball went the wrong side of the post. The second half started still with no goals from either side, and as the game continued it looked like only one goal would decide the tie, or else it was to go to dreaded penalties. Sun fans thought that the deadlock was broken when another Josh Towle strike whizzed just past the post. Towle was certainly making some good chances for himself and well deserved his name on the scoresheet. Another player for the Sun who played well was young Youssef Enajar, who certainly was willing to put himself about against senior opposition and provided the bite in midfield that was missing from the likes of the absent George Hobson and Andy Brennan. Josh Connolly tried to get past his marker and promptly received an elbow in the face which was missed by the ref, however, Josh doth protest too much methinks, as the ref sent him off to cool down for ten minutes in the sin bin. But with around eight minutes remaining, the Sun scored the vital goal that was needed, a cross from the right by Paolo Deritis was headed down by Josh Squires-Adams to Youssef Enajar who smashed the ball into the net to send the travelling Sun fans into raptures.

10

Wodson pushed forward to desperately try to get an equaliser, and their best chance of the game came through a long range shot which Luke Furlong dived to his right to save and hold onto. As the match went into injury time, Wodson appealed for a penalty for handball which was turned down by the referee, as the ref had a clear view that the Wodson Park shot hit Ben Howell whose arm was close to his body so there was no intent to handle. The ref blew his whistle not long after the hands incident and the Sun wait to see who they will get in the next round of this famous Hertfordshire trophy. Hobson’s hat trick helps Sun deliver 5 star performance Hinton 0 Sun Sports 5

2nd December 2017

A trip to Enfield on Saturday between 3rd and 5th placed teams in the Herts County League Division One ended up to be a one sided affair as the Sun shone on a cold day. Hinton looked dangerous from the off and pressured the Sun hard and the Hinton number 10 looked to have broken the offside trap after a couple of earlier attempts but his shot flashed wide of the post. Hinton certainly seemed to be at home on the sloping pitch and made good use of it by launching some long balls slopewards, enabling the home players to use their speed to get to the ball before it rolled away, and soon the Hinton centre forward had a clear opportunity to get a shot off which was superbly saved by Luke Furlong, who stretched his body fully to palm the ball away. And from a well worked corner, the ball fell to an unmarked layer on the edge of the box, whose header was headed towards goal, finding a Hinton player in front of Furlong who flicked the ball over him but Luke Beaumont was in the right place at the right time to hook the ball of the line. It was a case of daja vu not long after from another home side corner, where once again they cleverly used the flick on, this time on the edge of the six yard box, the ball looped over everyone and was going in but for George Hobson, standing on the far post, who volleyed the ball off the line and to safety. Eventually, the Sun got into the game, and from a miss kick from the Hinton Keeper the ball bounced nicely to George Hobson, who promptly smashed the ball from 25 yards only for the Hinton goalie to have recovered his wits and make a good save. But better was to come from Mr Hobson soon after, when, from around the same distance, he hit the ball perfectly which flew into the back of the net, making another goal of the season contender. Sun soon had a penalty appeal waved away, when Paolo Deritis was visibly tripped from behind after losing his marker, but the ref saw nothing wrong with the challenge. Josh Connolly had a shot on the edge of the box blocked and the ball came to Hobson but the power of his shot this time around was deflected to calmly roll to the keeper. Just before the break Hinton had another corner chance cleared off the line, this time by captain Calum O’Connor. So the Sun held the lead at half time, in a football match that could have been mistaken for a Rocky film, with the amount of Hinton players calling out “Adriaaaaan” throughout the half! From the re-start Sun dispossessed Hinton and broke away down the left and an Andy Brennan cross found Paolo Deritis unmarked, but his header went wayward and he ended up in the bushes behind the goal. Hinton were still only a goal behind, and were still fighting for an equaliser, and it looked like they were to draw level when a shot from the right flew past Furlong but thankfully also the goal.

12

Brenners was soon in action again when he got clear in the box but his shot was deflected by the keeper and the rebound fell kindly back into his arms. As Hinton pressed forward, more gaps appeared for the Sun to exploit, and so Josh Connolly found himself with the ball at his feet and with only the keeper to beat, he kept his composure and slotted the ball beautifully into the goal off the far post. The combination of the trilogy of the three wise men, Connolly, Brennan and Hobson, were starting to take over the show with all three players controlling the game as well as giving the Hinton defence nightmares. And the game was over as a contest when Andy Brennan whipped over a low cross from the right finding George Hobson to tap in his second and the Sun’s third of the match. Paolo Deritis was then flattened in the box while trying to twist and turn his way through the defence giving the ref no option this time but to point to the spot. There was no contest as to who would step up for the honour, and George Hobson tucked the ball away nicely to give the man a well deserved hat trick. Hinton went upfield and scored, but the goal was disallowed for offside, not that it would have made any difference to the result, just to the goal difference. And for the icing on the Hinton cake for Sun Sports, a fifth goal was added when Connolly broke down the left and crossed the ball into the box for Andy Brennan, but the ball was just behind him to be able to get onto it, the headed clearance came to George Hobson who volleyed but miss hit the ball, Hinton cleared again but the ball came to Paolo Deritis who drilled it hard and low into the area which deflected off of Brenner’s boot and span over the Hinton keeper and into the net. A five nil away win from a team that are playing like champions elect! However, Sun stay third behind Weston and Bovingdon Reserves, who are six points clear.

YOUNG SUNS (GO FOR IT!) A review of the Under 18's

Sun Sports 4 Brimsdown 1 1st Nov 2017 Sun Sports Under 18's continued their campaign in the Southern Counties Floodlit League (Delphian Division) into November with a home win against Brimsdown, winning the game 4-1. Youssef Enajar opened the scoring with a cracker of a shot and Luis Danton doubled the lead ten minutes later.

Callum Tobin made the points safe for the Sun in the second half from a scrambled effort and although Brimsdown pulled a goal back, the icing on the cake was completed by Liam Beaumont's easy tap in to put the Sun fourth in the table.

Sun Sports 4 Kings Langley 5 8th Nov 2017 Brian Hitchings Cup 1st Rd The Sun Sports Under 18’s fell at the first hurdle of the Brian Hitchings Cup on Wednesday when they lost 5-4 to Kings Langley Under 18’s. Sun stormed into a 2-0 lead with two goals from Callum Duce but the Kings side came back to lead 3-2 at half time. The Kings keeper had to be carried off in the first half and was replaced by a defender, who got in the way of enough of Sun’s shot to keep Kings ahead. In the second half, Kings went further ahead and were 5-2 up when, in the final ten minutes, two goals from Olamide Emiloju brought the Sun back into contention with the final few minutes to take the game to penalties, but it was not to be. The Sun lads must be commended for showing the typical "never say die" spirit of Sun Sports Football Club.

Review of the Under 18's (Continued)

Sun Sports 2 London Tigers 5 15th Nov 2017 The Sun under 18's capitulated in the second half against London Tigers at Cotlandswick on Wednesday. They were one - nil up at half time thanks to an early goal from Callum Tobin and the Sun doubled their lead just after half time with a Sammy Parker six yard tap in. But just as the boys in yellow thought they were cruising, the Tigers came back to bite them.

Tigers managed to score five goals in a twenty five minute period to spoil the Sun's hope of moving into the top three for the first time this season.

Brimsdown Rovers 1 Sun Sports 2 23rd Nov 2017 The Sun Sports Under 18's travelled to Walthamstow on Thursday night to play Brimsdown Rovers in the latest instalment of the Delphian League. Liam Beaumont gave the Sun the lead early in the first half and it stayed that way until the second half when Rovers equalised. But the Sun showed resilience and from a corner Youssef Enajar flicked the near post ball into the goal to give the Sun the lead again. The Sun players must be commended for the way they behaved when up against it for most of the second half, not much from the Brimsdown Rovers squad, but rather from the three stooges of officials, who seemed to want Rovers to beat Sun Sports.

Some of the Sun fans protested after a perfectly good third goal was disallowed and after a barrage of comments were aimed at the closest linesman, he promptly turned around and told the fans to shut up!

Looking back Match reports from days gone by... Sun Sports 7 Standon & Puckeridge 2 1991/92 Aubrey Cup Reserves result ruins a sunny day for Sports Spirits in the Sun Sports camp were distinctly divided at the weekend with the first team enjoying an emphatic victory but the reserves on the end of a nine goal thrashing. Paul Foster struck a hat trick as the first team progressed in the third round of the Aubrey Cup, beating Standon & Puckeridge 7-2. Sun strolled through the game without ever being stretched, despite giving away two sloppy goals. Chris Price grabbed a brace with Mark Ash and the prolific Joe Maguire netting the others. But at the other end of the spectrum was the reserves 9-1 defeat at the hands of BAC Stevenage in the Herts Intermediate Cup. "I have never seen such an inept and careless display in my life," commented the Sun spokesman Tom Barber. "The players totally let themselves and the club down, their attitude was disgraceful." And it was not even as if the reserve side was a makeshift one as it featured eight players who have turned out for the title chasing first team this season. The defeat ranks as the worst in their history. For the record, Ian Pepper scored Sun's goal when they were only trailing 1-0.

ICL (Letchworth) 1 Sun Sports 2 1968/69 Aubrey Cup Matthews gives Sun revenge Sun Sports overcame an early setback to avenge a September league defeat and move into the next round of the Aubrey Cup.

Saturday's second round victory proved to be a personal triumph for left winger John Matthews who netted both goals in what should have been a more convincing victory. Sun took the lead after just six minutes when a corner kick found Bernard Kent who passed for Matthews to score via the crossbar. But just two minutes later the lead was wiped out, Trevor Swinhoe, much to his colleague's amazement, was penalised for "steps". The visitors disputed the indirect free kick claiming that the goalkeeper had only taken two steps but the referee Reigler turned down the appeals and ICL subsequently found the net. 18

The visitors adopted a "shoot on sight" policy without success but after the interval they should have taken the lead when John Low was presented with an open goal. Unfortunately he shot over but Matthews made no mistake when he was given a chance by Colin Brown in the 53rd minute. Sun continued to dominate the exchanges until the last five minutes when the home side put in a late rally which forced the visitors on the defensive.

ICI Plastics 4 Sun Sports 3 1958/59 HCL Div One Sun get a late shock Leading 3-1 with only 15 minutes of play left, Sun looked set for a "double" over ICI Plastics, whom they beat 5-1 earlier in the season. Then came a change in fortunes. The home side obtained a second goal, their confidence mounted and Sun finished up by losing. Sun had the talent and the play and ought to have won. Despite facing a strong wind in the first half, they more than held their own, and after 18 minutes Roy Brown got the ball into the net, only for one of his colleagues to be given offside. Not to be denied, Colin Buckoke put Sun ahead ten minutes later with a shot from the wing. Before half time, however, Plastics drew level. Sun had most of the forward play in the second half. Good work by John Benning created an opening for Len Mellor, and Benning made a strong wing run before sending a pass to Rodney Palmer to make the score 3-1. In another sustained Sun attack the post was hit. A change came over Sun in the closing minutes. The right winger broke away to cross the ball for the home side's second goal and the same player created the chances which lost Sun the points.
